- David Hyde Pierce presents the Tony for Best Actress in a Musical to Patti LuPone for her role as Rose in "Gypsy." This was her second Tony, her first since she won in 1980 for "Evita."

I'm laughing hysterically at Patti's reaction to winning: "Oh, ok."
"It's been 29 years!!" Ohmigod!! When she won I nearly jumped through my bedroom ceiling and practically screamed myself hoarse. Patti you DESERVED that Tony. Congrats!
This is no self-centered diva, but rather the last of a dying breed- a true broadway star, who's love of the theatre is more than evident in this humbling acceptance speech. Pray the next generation will have a light as bright as Patti to lead the way...
"This won't take long, I promise" I LOVE the way she says that!
I don't get why some people don't LOVE that acceptance speech ..it was hilarious and she Damn well deserved it !! You GO Girl ...xoxo
I loved how her husband was wiping his tears away. He was so proud of her!!
Her face is priceless. She knew she was winning.
Everybody knew, really
Yea, there was no real competition that year. I'm not as big a Patti fan as a lot of theater nerds, but I saw her in Gypsy that year and she completely and utterly blew it away - the whole cast did really. That revival was one of the most special things ever put together on the stage, and everyone knew Patti had this award coming. There was just no other way it could have turned out, really.
I can't wait to see the speech she gives in 2037
Lee GaryB wha
You mean 2020 if we still have it this year
That's when my mixtape drops!
2022 now
Patti LuPone was absolutely outstanding in Gypsy
+mikeypl7 She also voiced Yellow Diamond from "Steven Universe".
I saw her as Evita waaay back with the original cast. She was a genius then. And 29 years later she's still a genius!
Funny story...that mic isn't even turned on
Eddie1919 lmao
What? WOW< well I'm only half surprised LOL
@eddie 1919 I know this is an older post but it did not get the love it deserved.....those who know ...well, know!
She should've won one every decade!!
79/80 - Evita
87/88 - Anything goes
95/96 - Sunset boulevard
07/08 - Gypsy
So many missed opportunity and injustices....
Did she do Sunset on Broadway?
@@asalmoran2004 I meant that if she did she wouldve won it, with only 2 people being nominated
She didn't do sunset on broadway, she was fired
She originated the role in London and was contractually promised a Broadway transfer. However, when the Glenn Close LA production did better, ALW broke the contractual agreement and transferred the LA production instead. I think it’s fair to say Patti would’ve had the Tony in the bag had she gone to Broadway.
Should've won for anything goes!
I dont understand how this woman only has two Tonys...She is the essence of Broadway! Her house should be full of Tonys!
3 now
literally i feel like she deserves so many more
SHUP UP ITS BEEN TWENTY NINE YEARS! Priceless.
This and Sutton Fosters acceptance speech for Anything Goes are my two favorite. I love the line "shut up it's been 29 years" I saw Gypsy two times and both times she got a standing ovation after her 11th hour number of Rose's Turn, I have seen a LOT of theater and have never seen a performer get a standing ovation after a song. She was amazing in Sweeney Todd and she should have won the tony in 2006 for that performance instead of LaChanze in 06 (and I did see both shows)
Dear conductor: You don't play Patti off. You play off the one-trick ponies nobody will ever hear from again. Not Miss Patti.
Bravo! Couldn't agree with you more.
You don't fuck with La LuPone!
Well, they also played off Elaine Stritch, so... God, I hate TV networks!
@@EnzoFoove Playing off the divine LuPone is bad enough. But the legendary Stritch? They must be mad!
Well, you do, if that broaway legend decides to thank everyone she met in her 30 years career. As Ellen said at the Oscars, "it's not that we don't have time for speeches, it's just we don't have time for boring speeches". I expected much more from this smart, funny, brigth woman.
Just my opinion, a big Lupone's fan.
I love how she thanked the ghosts of the St James Theatre :)
Patti is a natural treasure
What an incredible season. Kelli O'Hara was absolutely STUNNING in South Pacific. But Patti is just a force of nature. Extremely well-deserved for a legendary performance..
My favorite Broadway actress of all time. Oh, my God, it's a dream to work with this woman. I love this speech.
If it had been 29 years I would have done the same
"I don't know what's in it but I'm giving the performance of my LIFE!"
"Shut UP! IT'S BEEN 29 YEARS!!!!!" hahahaha, oh they should give her some more comic roles :)))
BEST SPEECH EVER!
+Louise Ashley That was a great acceptance speech for Yellow Diamond.
"Shut up it's been 29 years!!!" Love Patti!
I can't even tell how much I WORSHIP this woman.
She belts even when she talks!
I saw Gypsy twice and both times Patti was AMAZING. It is the only show I have been at where a performer got a standing ovation before curtain call (both times she got one after Rose's turn and the first time I saw it after Everythings coming up roses). I have seen her in several other productions, terrific in all.
I saw three of the five shows for this category and Patti was the best by far. I just love her comments and quick wit. best acceptance speech ever. "Shut up it's been 28 years
I saw it during Tony voting season...and she got a standing O just for walking in screaming "SING OUT LOUISE."
LONG Before Lizzo....Patti was #thatbitch
remember seeing her in Evita in 1979, what a star!
Whatever the acceptance speech, anyone who saw her as Rose in this show knows she earned every bit of that Tony Award.
She's amazing!!!!
I wanna be patti lupone in my next life
I would be Lin Manual Miranda in MY next life
I dont want to be, I would rather be her close friend, so I can personally witness her greatness.
One of the reasons why I love her soooo much!
Not at all the hugest Patti fan, but holy cow, this was amazing!
"GHOSTS OF THE ST. JAMES THEATRE!" bahahaha!..rofl!
When Patti LuPone tells you to shut up. You shut up...
Ahh that was awesome!! I remember watching the Tony's that year, but for some reason don't remember her speech. I remember her winning, but I was like oh yeah Patti LuPone she is magnificent she probably wins all the time! I didn't know it had been 29 years! Wow! What is wrong with these Tony voters!?!
Patti was wonderful this role...
Deserved it! Much love to you.
Michael McGarry
My favorite tony acceptance speech every. Was well deserved
My favorite speech of all time
She is sooooooooooooooooooo funny!! Love her!!
THE BEST!!! I love Patti so much! If I were to win a Tony I'd try to remember the ghosts of the theater too!!! She's so funny!
She is sooooooooo funny!!
She's amazing!
absolutely love her
pure awesomeness.
"This won't take long, I promise"
......so much for that :-D
i'm going in a week, so psyched..my first b-way show!!!!
great speech
SHUT UP ITS BEEN 29 YEARS!!!!! Hahahahaaha oh how i love patti
AMEN PATTI!!! woo!
I love her!
Holy GOD. This makes me so happy each time I watch it. =D
nobody plays off Patti lupone
What a great year it was for revivals.
Wow. No wonder she played Evita so well.
hahaha so much for "this won't take long, I promise."
This makes me laugh every time. Patti's amazing!
She knew she was getting it!
I believe the run for this revival is open for now. At least that is what is shown on the TheaterMania site for the St. James theater. I'm going in a couple weeks, can't wait!
i could not agree more.
Lol "Ghosts of the St. James Theater!"
She's great, she's funny and she knows she can say all that and still be THE GREATEST DIVA OF THEM ALL!!
Everybody knew she was gonna win
I love how she makes her opinions facts.
The divine Patti can say what she wishes as long as she wishes; I saw this Gypsy; she has that audience in the palm of her hand from the moment she appears; she's giving a performance that will rank in legend along side of Barbra Streisand's in Funny Girl (which I saw); that's my highest praise; there are advantage to having been around awhile!
SO true. Kelli was absolutely gorgeous in South Pacific. But Patti was a force of nature in Gypsy. You gotta give credit where credit is due.
YESS!
Fantastic speech LMAO actually made me laugh
I hope one day when I get on broadway I hope I'll be able to get to work with her. She seems like such a delight to work with and I adore her
Well, I'm thrilled for you, Markish; they say nothing beats the high of a first time; and you'll remember this the rest of your life. By the way, my first B'way show was the aforementioned Funny Girl; I was a teenager, but I remember moments as though they were yesterday--Patti (and company) will not disappoint you. . . !
To the ghosts of the St. James Theatre!
lmao! :D
The fact that they played Patti Lupone off...
"People either love me, or they hate me!"
i would want nothing more in this life than to have her career.
What a woman.
Really? See her sing Evita's song? I loved it.
"This won't take long I promise"
.....
(music plays)(people clap)
"Shut up it's been 29 years!!!!"
I
21.4 14- 64th Bday!! :****
File under "Nailed it"
Dear orchestra conductor YOU DONT EVER EVER PLAY OFF MISS PATTI YOUR OBIDIENT SERVANT M.Carbonaro
lol shes def unique
saw her in gypsy, gotta luv her
best tony speech EVER!
its like during the Oscars when they play meryl streep off, its just wrong
Yes, if they are not giving her the award, don't nominate.
Probably the greatest musical role for a woman. I don't see how she could of lost. Lupone is brilliant but any actress who was half way good would have won. Its "Gypsy"!!!!!
Merman lost. Bernadette Peters lost
Only 2? She’s brilliant
I hope when I get on broadway one I'll be
Patti LuPone is Yellow Diamond from "Steven Universe" on Cartoon Network. Oh, and by the way, congratulations on your earned the Tony Award, Yellow Diamond.
I saw her in an episode of Friends when Carol announced to Ross she's pregnant
Hey it's Niles and Aunt Zora!
If Kelli had taken it, I wouldn't mind either. Such a good set of female performers.
@cdftaurus LMFAO! I haven't heard that line in ages!
BTW, The TARDIS, great, great CZcams name!
Niles introduces his Aunt Zora.
Omg!! And she won an Emmy for that!
Just realized that's the same Dress she wore in her Book cover!!!! -3 I think....:o
U RIGHT
SHUT UP IT'S BEEN 29 YEARS god I love you Patti
@cdftaurus Love that Will& Grace episode!
yeah it's 28
I don't usually respond to any youtube comments, since they tend to be generally ridiculous, but really? she was talking about her husband and son. thousands of other wives and mothers would say the exact same thing.
Yah Patti!
Her speech is very similar to when Cuba Gooding Jr got his Oscar!
Patti must be a lucky woman to have 2 Tonys on her resume! But I thought Kelli O'Hara was wonderful as Nellie when I saw the PBS telecast of South Pacific.
