This isn’t just in basketball… absolutely nothing has gotten better, not sport, not anything… craftsmanship, quality, work ethic and professionalism are now just things you see in movies or hear in motivational speeches. Diluted genes.

Yup. Quality is getting rare. Quantity is definitely more common. Money has to be made quickly with crap products. Thing is, the people out there will buy the sh!t products because it’s all they know. And the elites know it. Got no other choices. The poorer ones have no choice.

Yeah as a MJ fan only KOBE was like MJ and yeah the league has change and soften too much yeah we could blame the league but what about the players say they can go on strike and I’m sure the league will loose money believe me they even ask for the new rules that’s why they’re implemented not just because they choose it’s because they hear the players and you can say anything but it’s true Al the players now a day it’s care about making millions what happened to love for the game . You can hear them saying I love the fans I love the game but if the contra don’t go thru then they won’t say $41t . Trust me I only even ask my bro how are the lakers or clippers doing like once every two weeks I even lost interest in the nfl because they become so damn dumb with new rules let them played like before if a player got hurt before he still wanted to play for the fans now a day it’s I’m tired I need a day or two off it makes me so sick getting all those millions just cause your tired

MJ and Kobe showed us to be the best you need to dominate evry single day. They were playing 100% even during practice. Both of them were in the gym every morning no matter what. There are so many stories of MJ having fun all day before a game at night time, drinking playing golf and then scoring 40/50 points that night. That dedication then was mirrored in their teammates. Rodman was known to go to Vegas between games in the finals and still crush it on the court. How is your team supposed to push it to an allstars level if the best player on the team is lazy.

actually Shaq is known for being lazy and Kobe and Shaq broke off their relationship because Kob was putting in more hard work than Shaq and Shaq not stepping up his game because he was just a force of nature. while Kobe worked very hard to study the game from a SG position, Shaq was just destroying the backboards back when a center was supposed to do that. not saying that Shaq didnt put work, he increased massively since he came into the league but not at the Mamba mentality type of work. Rodman wasn't lazy, he was a freak of nature too, he worked harder than anyone else but had a massive determination and self confidence that he can get the job done no matter what he does a night before.

The athletes risk their health and are slaves to a contract. Yes they make more than you but they dedicated their lives since they were 5 yo to beingbthe best. Most importantly they got lucky to not get injured. Also its only like 5% of these top athletes make the big bucks. %95 of these athletes have a short career and only make a decent living for those years. After that they go broke because of poor money management and because all the people i listed above got paid handsomely off the athletes life long dedication.

Wouldn't make a difference. They don't care. Our society is suffering massively from "main character syndrome", a narcissistic illness in which each person thinks they're the star of this existence. That, combined with the fact that money (as opposed to honor and principals) has always been the most important thing in life for most Americans, has led to the biggest gap ever between money and the next most important things in life. And the lucky few who are in a position to acquire massive wealth can afford to not be concerned with disappointing others or what people think of them. They've obtained in abundance the only thing that matters in life, which in their eyes, makes them "better" people.
And rather than being appalled, quite often, the public sees it the same way. Case in point, so many times when I have called a famous persons character or choices/actions into question, I'm met with the statement "well they've got way more money than YOU'LL ever have!!!". Cool. I'm sure that will be very comforting as they reflect on their life while laying on their luxury deathbeds.

I think a lot of this is because kids specialize in a particular sport too early. If you play several different sports you become more competitive and understand what it takes to be good at something you may not be great in. This translates also into being less relationships with the same guys constantly as well as encourage competitive spirit. The last thing is parents not being willing or in some cases allowed to be hard on your kids to require the most out of them.

Most folk will look at *constructive insigjt as "trying to tell them what to do". That in itself is a red flag, especially when you *know that what you're extending will work. Yet said person refuses to see it in the light that it's meant to be seen.

agreed! part of that balance should be how contracts are written. since the team can make decisions about a player's career without the player's ok (eg trades), the player should have some similar power to change their situation without the team's ok. not free agency, that is about AFTER a contract is up. a team can trade a player any time they want (unless the player has a no-trade clause, extremely rare). i do find it annoying when a player signs a 4-5 year contract and then within a year asks for a trade, but there ought to be some better balance of power. i don't have the answer, it is just kind of a question.

The current NBA is the perfect example of why there should be a balance between owners and players.
If the owners have too much power you have the NFL where great players don't get paid what they deserve but if the players get too much power you have the NBA where a player can give 50% effort but expect 100% compensation.

Most of the them are playing less than 40 minutes per game. There are breaks for foul calls, time outs, between quarters. Others make their own breaks by faking injuries, lying in the court for minutes at a time only to rise up and miraculously cured from what ailed them. Load management is an insult to fans. What “load” are they managing? Out of a 24 hour game day they spend less than an hour of that day actually playing the game competitively.

There is some truth in this, that today's kids may take a lot of things for granted. Maybe life was a little harder in our days. But there's also a lot of nostalgia in lot of comments here
Today's players are by far much more talented than in MJ's or Kobe's days. By far. It is only natural, as they have access to better training, new techniques, analytics, better nutrition, sports medicine, etc
And while is true some kids do not make a good use of all of this, many do, and so we get the likes of Kyre, Giannis, Jokic, Tatum, Luka and many other players who are better than anything you may throw from the 90s and early 20s
Oh, and for those who say it was easier to coach young players in the old days, let us not forget how hard it was for Phill to make MJ pass the damn ball, to deal with Shaq and Kobe's ego, or Sprewell almost chocking his coach, so c'mon
It worths nothing also to point out that MJ and Oakley are definitely not the best examples of a good General Manager nor coach there may be
Finally, on Charles comment, there is something wrong with us if we think that players having better working conditions is bad. And is actually the same criticism we hear a lot on any profession, any job, that today's young workers are soft because labor conditions are better. So, I guess it was better when we had long shifts, worst salaries and other abuses, makes no sense at all.I am sure none of these veterans would have complained if they had make this money and had better conditions back then

Individual stats can be incentivized but the money can't be more than the team money. Treat team stats like individual stats. For instance the team with the most points* that years. (*major categories) I believe it would revolutionize the entire sports industry. All games would have more meaning. Rest when you retire. LeBron(the current cashcow) since he joined LA has played a little below 60 games a year. I think the NBA likes that we can trade in missing 20 games a year and get +6 more years of our face of the league vs having him play all 82 and he is done by 34. Its a good trade business wise. The league seems to be about longevity now, even with eliminating physicality and defense as a whole.
