  • 6th and Loft | Chief Musician Jonathan Barnes
    Featuring:
    Melissa Aldana, saxophone
Steffan Bello, 2023 Jazz Competition Winner
Antonio Vergara, 2022 Jazz Competition Winner
If 6th St. SE were to continue a little farther towards the Navy Yard, it would pass right by our rehearsal building, the Sail Loft. Chief Barnes was inspired by tunes that were being played in the Commodores at the time, namely Ellington's "Cottontail" and Thad Jones' "Little Pixie II" whose rhythmic material is pulled from and quoted in the brass soli. This is juxtaposed against an angular melody which offers a glimpse at how the Commodores honor classic big band jazz while creating contemporary original music. Enjoy this original piece by Chief Musician Jon Barnes!

I remember this number from that concert. I'm a little surprised that you chose to post this one in particular, as it seemed pretty obvious at the time that the soloists weren't entirely sure about the timing of solos. (Hey, limited rehearsal time can be a killer.) But the band sounds amazing, as always.
Would love to hear again the tune where the soon-to-retire member of the sax section did something of a tribute to Johnny Hodges - and then played straight ahead like the generations after Hodges.

Go for it guys and gals you re doing great. Yes not all was perfect, but that is what happens during live performance. I really enjoyed the rhythm section and the two tenor saxes. You showed some real improvisational talent. The reed and brass sections did a great job, too. Want to hear and see more!!!
