- How many female jazz composers can you name? Here's one to add to your list: Mary Lou Williams.
A native of Pittsburgh, PA, Mary Lou Williams defied gender and racial stereotypes, pushing the boundaries of what was possible in jazz music. Known as the "first lady of the jazz keyboard," Williams arranged for jazz legends Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie, and more.
Let's take a moment to celebrate the amazing contributions of Mary Lou Williams and all of the incredible women who have shaped our world throughout history.
