It is also quite common for them to have smaller subsets of members on a track (unofficial subunits I suppose just for that song) When Taeyong and Mark get really long sections of rap as you noticed in Baby Don't Like It, it's generally a sign that they've written those and thus rap their own section of words. Limitless is such a classic album for 127 and gave rise to so many fan fav songs that they are now 127 classics....

when you expect a 'typical sound' in NCT127 songs... yeah, there's nothing 'ordinary' about their songs. All the sounds in this album caught me off guard the first time I was listening to the album because I was expecting typical K-Pop vibes, but I was wrong.
“Good Thing” is a bop that I think grows on you more over time! ai have it on my summertime playlist and always have a blast when it comes on lol “Back 2 U” is quite possibly one of NCT 127’s best songs EVER. Truly iconic and amazing. They did their BIG one. All of them are great vocalists, but Taeil is especially crazy. Hearing it live is transcendental actually. I know you said this is early on and you’re still waiting for the r&b side to develop and it WILL, BUT i think “Back 2 U” is more in line with that they’re gonna continue to deliver. R&B is definitely an NCT strong point. They have nailed that desperate, toxic romance lmao I do not listen to “Heartbreaker” very often and Idk what Rocket League is but I can see the fun video game connection. Now…”Baby Don’t Like It” is CRAZY. Who makes a whole song about wanting to cheat on your significant other so badly 😭 Another iconic song. The bed squeaks really take it over the top. I play this song ALL the time lol “Baby Don’t Like It” is the first of what’s considered the NCT “hoe anthem” collection lol I think WayV is the unit that does the “subunit within a subunit” thing on albums more often, but you will see it happen again with 127 and Dream as well! It’s not a super regular thing but yeah it happens. Yay finally got around to this now that the day for figure skating is over. Your point on R&B was amusing, really made it dawn on me how important toxicity is to the lyrics, thereby adding another slider to my previous two for the serves in the genre. For my ideal of an R&B song anywhere but especially in k-pop since Korea doesn't have as established a tradition in the genre, you gotta have a mix of toxicity, desperation, and general patheticness. I also have a more specific one in that I want to believe in the lyrics as they're being sung which is why I hold shinee and ooo as kind of the gold standard for the genre when it comes to bgs. With NCT in general the impression I have is that they're just way too cool to sell me on the lyrics to their R&B songs, but I still like many of their tracks in the genre. Especially because of all the mandatory rapper duos in SM I do believe Taeyong and Mark are by far the most versatile and skilled respectively and they tend to more than make up for that missing sincerity to me. They're still definitely trying to find their sound and identity in Limitless I can kinda hear the identity crisis inherent to a new group there. But Back 2 U is the one song from their first two EPs I'd say stood the test of time and wouldn't feel out of place when placed next to when 127 figures itself out completely (which imo is their 2020 album). Imo from the first 3 EPs the next one is in cherry bomb, Sun and Moon. Watching your reaction to Angel can say I'm now also looking forward to some of the later slower, almost ballad-y songs in their discography. Thanks again!
it was seriously so wild to me when i realized why i had such a distaste for most of the modern era of r&b. Everything is toxic but it’s sooo self referential and purely about sex and using twitter lingo now. Like i want LOVE to FEEL toxic, like u need to be pathetically in love with ur partner.. I don’t need u to *tell me* how epic and toxic ur being THATS JUST NOT WHAT ITS ABOUT. Anyways. I think it’s hilarious the way u put it, like they’re too cool to be believable in some ways. I like to think that anyone can be pathetically in love or emotionally scarred, im just a hopeless romantic like that. I think they’re definitely trying to hone their sound so far. It feels like they know which sounds they can go to with success and are trying to fill in the gaps around that. I enjoy these attempts tho, I can’t lie.
