- Hello! These two terms are frequently used in linguistics and ELT. But sometimes it can be really confusing. I hope you find my video useful. Don't forget to subscribe me! :)

When learning a new language, probably the most common route is to go bottom-up, learning the writing system, the phonetics and orthoprosody rules. Exposure to native speakers help building the knwoledge of the language "up": rhythm, intonation, speaking rate, etc. But when the language being learnt is a "dead" language, like Latin, that is no one´s mother tongue, how can fluency be achieved? I feel that many specialists pronounce perfectly phonemes, and are super rigid permorming long and short vowels, saying all short/long vowels with exactly the same duration, but the resulting speech sounds robotic, like a morse code, or almost like singing, because of the super regular syllable durations. I feel it´s preety obvious that rhythm in natural speech is more complex and nuanced. And we perceive the radical difference when a text is being read, and when is being recited by heart. As a singer, this is all very natural to me, as regardless of orthoprosody, there is an abyssal difference in the communication of an opera singer and a beginning student prunouncing the same text. But when it comes to dead languages, it seems difficult to me to argue against people that recite Virgil like a robot, thinking their pronoutiation is perfect, just because the individual phonemes are individually being perfectly pronouced.
Nice explanation of the two areas. Very informative video. Thanks!
Thanks for giving good idea about those theory.
This video is so much helpful to understand the concept of top down processing
Thank you Theodora
straight to the point, thanks!
Thank you Theodora, your video was very helpful. Just a quick question for Top-down processing are we basically accessing our lexicon to help answer the question that was proposed to us?
Devendran Naicker We use our previous knowledge :)
Helpful indeed
Which one of these two procedures would you recommend for a listening activity in Primary school?
CAROLINA DOTTA Hello! 😁 I think it’s about what you aim. You can use both. If you want them to articulate some specific phonemes, you can use bottom-up. Yet, in many cases with young learners a more holistic way is suggested.
Why do we need these two models in language processing? How can we use them to gain information for example when translating sentences
Sıdıka Saltan Well with bottom-up processing you recognize the words and you translate them. Yet, you shouldn’t forget that translating one by one all the words may not be enough. Some words when they come together they may have different meanings such as phrasal verbs. In addition to that, some words might have positive or bad connotations and they may actually mean something else from their literal meaning. So, at that point you’ll need top-down processing :)
@@TheodoraDelibasoglu thank you so much :))
Is the language top down or bottom up process?
Could you please give us an example in text which would describe both processing? What text would be the best to describe this process?
question are you turkish or greek? you have a greek first name but a turkish lastname
