They are my opinion and suggestions, minecraft is a creative game and you can build how you like, you can take my suggestions or not theres no right or wrong!

Ok, here’s what i took from this video:
1/ Avoid giant flat walls (bc they are harder to fill with decor)
2/ Try to make each side of the house look a bit different from eachothers (to create visual interest and make the build less monotonous)
3/ Build struts to make it pop (its like an outline but in 3D)
4/ Go outside, touch grass, look at houses irl for inspiration (style, color pallet)
5/ It’s like drawing, go from general basic shapes, to refining those shapes match your vision, and then add details to increase visual interest
6/ Like in drawing, small additions can make huge impacts on how the build looks, so go easy on the detail work

I personally find it best to practice with villages. Not actual village homes, but extend the end-points of these villages with additional houses as big as the ones in the village.
Experiment with different techniques big and small, practical and extravagant, until you’re ready to build the MUCH bigger houses for yourself and your friends.
Eventually, you‘ll master a unique technique to your style. Even consider various materials and biome locations. The more you experiment, the more impressive your homes look, especially if they stand out or locate in obscure places like mountains, oceans, or even the Nether.

Aaah use a cave instead then decorate it with oak wood beams, slabs to move easier, a pond at the end with lily pads and fish, a bed with a daylight-night time lamp sensor so you know when to sleep, saplings so you don’t go outside, farms too. A storage room, varying grey coloured rocks for detail, infinite water source and yeah you got a solid starter house (I use this trick all the time

As much as I'd like to be better with redstone, even the early parts of this video helped me run wild with my building approach on my test world and it seems almost as if my own structures are thanking me for it. Thanks, I'm going to study this video very closely when I have more time.

In survival (when im not in pvp situations) ill make the basic shape and build up two blocks, then go from there as i progress. Ill finisb my first floor, get some iron armor, maybe some diamonds, then do the rest. Im on a hardcore world right now and ive got a nice house that im quite proud of and working on my god armor

I think the real trick is to build your starter shack first, but then incorporating it into your future build and always keeping in mind that you can add ontop of what you already have (as well as below and sideways). You can always tear down a side of a home and extend it, or build a lookout tower on top etc, and maybe tie in a wall that runs through the side of your house and safekeeps your land behind your house etc for livestock and such. In essence, any build can turn into something new, so there's no reason to abandon what you already have, just because you want to build something of a greater vision.

I really appreciate the"adding extras" segment of this video because I usually watch building tips whenever I'm finished with my house but I'm not quite happy with it. But there's not many tips to improve an already finished house other than add some details I guess.

@Talented weirdo Because there's still a certain "feel" that you need to have for building. I can't explain it, I can only tell you to start with really small and simple houses and work your way up. Gain experience while using Grians tips on the way.

Quick tip: I find that making a list of all the rooms you want is a great way of planning a house without leaving bland empty rooms or cramming to much into rooms.

It really helped me on improving my builds!
I watched this video as someone quite fluent with organic builds, but a little struggling with making interesting buildings. I really enjoyed it, and the tips are really good. I will say however the over-detailing thing you discussed with stairs/slabs/walls can be nice for certain parts of the build, specifically if you've got a stone foundation underneath that is visible, like on a hillside, it makes the foundation look nicer simply because otherwise there wouldn't be much there.

Shape is the first thing people see, not detail
Every angle is considered in the roof (some roof on the 1st layer)
Make random shapes
Takes a bit of experimenting
Balconies can be added, too
Details come *second* to the shape
Shape is the most important thing in building
Roofs 11:43
Staircase, block, staircase, block, etc. *bell curve*
Slabs only *gradually going up*
Staircase, 2-3 blocks, staircase, 2-3 blocks *steep*

You can make a house with one shape and specific details and block choice and make the same thing changing only the details and block choice, but they will look completely different.
Choose colors that compliment each other, and think about your pallet.
Extras 17:32
For people that are done, but not quite happy yet with how it turned out
Window nestled inside the roof, and chimney make the roof look less bland
Balcony, or platform, or...
Garden, or a pathway next to the entrance
Add an extra piece/story on the top/roof. This, and the first one can really fill the roof, and make it less flat
Detailing 21:19

This is a very well made video. He does a really good job of explaining generally how to build well, and also provides examples of how that might come together, making this video a really good one to look back on, even in later versions of the game!

A very simple, and yet, very useful statement. It really is that easy once you get the right mindset going. I’d say 80% of building better in MC is just being able to admit that something doesn’t work.
It’s so true, but man it’s hard to incorporate that mindset lol
I think playing build battle has helped me get better because you'll build such a variety of things and I've seen a lot of new techniques in others peoples builds I hadn't seen before.

On the topic of roofs: Bell-curve roofs tend to be used in colder regions because it's harder for snow to settle on them. Triangular roofs are used in temperate regions because rain deflects and runs off of them easily. Flat rooves are used in dry regions with little rain because it saves on building material. Reflect these in your builds!
Edit: Yes, modern buildings around the world usually use the standard gable-style (triangular) roof. If you're building in a modern style, go ahead and do this. If you're building in a medieval/fantasy style, I suggest choosing the appropriate roof for your materials, environment and era.

You're welcome! I find that how appropriately a build fits into its surroundings matters a lot for the overall feel of the build. So building the right roof for the right biome will make it fit in much better. c:

As far as I can tell he doesn't have any real background knowledge on building houses. He learned it all by himself in minecraft. So I don't know if he even knows that.

Hi Grian, I wanted to let you know that a year ago, I was building cube houses out of cobblestone. Then I watched this video and got a little better at building over time.
This week a guy on a server came to my house and asked 2 other guys over to look at my build. They thought I was some kind of youtuber who was really good at building (much like you).
