- The Dragon battle that took place at Rook's Rest during the early part of the dance of the dragons really shaped what the war became wit it's outcome. The Death of Princess Rhaenys, The injuries to King Aegon ii that effectively left Criston Cole and Aemond Targaryen in charge of the greens. But most important, it was the first really dragon on dragon battle in the war, and a taste for what was about to come.

Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen was trapped on Dragonstone by her brother King Aegon ii with no way to escape her fate. What was to come was the final showdown between the two main players of the dance of the dragons and bring the war into its final phase. The House of the dragon was crumbling and the events that was about to follow would only cause more damage to both sides of the war.

Your right
Season 2. If you think about it, there’s only 6 dragon vs dragon fights in the war and many were duels, not involving field armies. Rook’s Rest is one of only two battles in which both sides had dragons AND armies acting in conjunction
I never thought about it that way before but 100% correct
@@WorldOfWesteros well we had this mental stereotype of rival armies clashing both with dragons, but that only happened twice (arguably once, as Second Tumbleton they were riderless). BUT Martin actually gave good in-universe reasons for this: much like chess, you don’t always send your queen head to head against the enemy’s queen, you use her to pick off pawns where the enemy is weak.
And Sunfyre was in and survived 3 of them . He and Aegon had it pretty rough even though Aegon " dudn't wunt it "
The moment she saw Vhagar and sunfyre, she knew that she was going to die. But instead of fleeing she did what a true warrior does.
Rhaenys truly deserved the iron throne
I’m starting to think that Aemond strategically slammed into both meleys and sunfyre attempting to end them both, getting rid of aegon would make him king, what HE wanted, and getting rid of rhaenys and meleys was taking away one of the black's most powerful ally
It is a double win for aemond
Aemond the goat 🗿
Aegon still had children so he wouldnt be king.
@@kb4903 he would actually no way the greens would support a child over aemond who had the largest Dragon .
I mean, maybe. He still would need to get rid of Daemon, which would have been easier with Sunfyre.
He would be a complete moron to go against his own brother in a war where they will need all the strength they have to beat the Blacks. No way Aemond intentionally harms his brother and Sunfyre. Even when Aegon was incapacitated for most of the war Aemond never usurped him. They know they have to stick together and they are loyal to each other.
I felt so bad for Meleys...and Rhaenys. This is gonna be amazing on screen. And it's crazy how early in the wat Aegon gets injured so badly.
show!Rhaenys is so bland and boring compared to book!Rhaenys. I'm afraid her death won't have the same effect.
It will be hard to feel sorry for Rhaenys in the show given the thousands of peasants she massacred in the Dragon Pit.
@@SolarDragon007I think that’s why they added that scene. So people aren’t as upset when she gets killed off.
@@Nomaaaaam I suppose so, but it kind of makes it hard to take her seriously earlier on in the show where she lamented how men would rather burn the Realm than see a woman on the Iron Throne. The only way it makes sense is if the show is aware how hypocritical Rhaneys actually is, and that ultimately she's not much better than the tyrannical system she admonished.
@@SolarDragon007I love Rhaenys, but, if people like to use mental gymnastics to absolve Daenerys after she deliberately kills half a million people then Rhaenys actions are absolutely nothing to frown upon.
Being so close to KL's, Princess Rhaenys had to have known that she was going into a trap. She fought worthy of being a Dragonrider. Prince Aemon losing his life so early is such a damn shame but I'm sure her would've been proud of his daughter being so fearless.
True, though attacking alone wasn't something smart overall
Had Prince Aemon lived, Rhaenys would’ve been Queen
Can't wait to see this in House of the Dragon, the battle is going to be a spectacle. Though to be honest that scene with Rhaenys bursting into the coronation of Aegon made me like her less in the show it still is going to hurt seeing it and Corlys reaction. Loved her character in the book
The Greens may have won but this was the beginning of the hellish life that Aegon II will experience till the day he dies. Rhaenys died a quick and glorious death. Free from this world and all its troubles
@Rhaenyra The Pretender Targaryen in a certain pov yes. She had a 2v1 battle against Sunfyre and Vhagar, though she died she managed to wound Aegon II seriously that he basically became lame beyond repair and sustained only by the milk of the poppy. Every single day for Aegon II was suffering after that battle
The true beginning of the end for the traitors.
Though in truth they were doomed from the start.
The fact they caused soo much damage to the blacks makes one think the maester conspiracy is true.
@@strongsuccessfulweeb1400 sending rheanys alone is dumb
@@mesa577 couldnt agree more but to be fair only Rhaenys, Rhaenyra and Daemon are experienced dragon riders with large dragons. Jace, Baela and Rhaena have Juvinile dragons at best not to mention their kids. Wasn't sure where Daemon is at this time but yeah Aegon II does fight his own battles and Rhaenyra /Syrax was the most useless dragon rider and dragon during the Dance.
@@CristonColeLawyer The greens were worthless traitors.
At least they all went extinct
The Battle at Room's Rest is greatest battle in Crownlands in Dance of Dragons side the Battle of the Gullet.
Something I think is overlooked in this battle is that it may seem like a strategic plan, but from the Greens it was incredibly reckless and foolish. Sunfyre and Vhagar were the ONLY fighting dragons the Greens had to muster in KL. Dreamfyre was basically out of the Dance since Helena was left psychologically broken after Blood and Cheese and was incapable of flying. And the only other dragon they had was Tessarion, who was with Daeron in the Reach. So that's why Aegon II had to join the battle, even though it was incredibly risky and dangerous for him to do so. Keep in mind he had just lost his oldest son and heir, and his wife was mentally shattered. So now Aegon II's heir was the baby Maelor, and were already suffering in leadership. And what happened? Aegon II and Sunfyre were both badly injured, neutralizing them for a significant period.
"Risk is part of war," declared Ser Richard Horpe, a lean knight with a ravaged face whose quilted doublet showed three death's-head moths on a field of ash and bone. "Every battle is a gamble, Snow. The man who does nothing also takes a risk."
Had Aegon and Sunfyre not taken part the Greens could've lost Vhagar and have been without any battle tested dragons while the Blacks had Caraxes Vermithor and Seasmoke
@@pattonramming1988Well, to be fair, Vhagar may have been able to handle Meleys alone, though it all depends.
Not to mention, Aegon inspires loyalty for fighting alongside his troops.
Likely just there to ensure Meleys died. Sure, Vhagar alone would've likely been enough but, 2 Dragons is better than 1 in a battle
Not to mention, Aegon II flying above his troops inspires loyalty, something Rhaenyra never did.
Shoot, Aegon and Sunfyre fight and survive more battles than both Daemon and Rhaenyra combined (Rhaenys didn't fight at all, not that Syrax would've been all that dangerous when compared to other Dragons of similar size)
I agree, caution should've been planned out better, as Vhagar should've attacked Meleys before Sunfyre, though Vhagar's size and lower speed may have been the reasons why Sunfyre got to Meleys first.
That, and maybe Aegon was angry at the loss of his son.
They should have used the attack as a decoy and hit the Blacks in the heart by destroying the Velaryon fleet.
No doubt Rhaenys and Meleys would have taken out either Aemond / Vhagar or Aegon / Sunfyre alone, she had more experience as a dragon rider than even Daemon. This is the true Rhaenys, self sacrifice, HotD has done her and the Velaryons so dirty. Rest in peace to the Queen Who Never Was. Baela and Moondancer will finish what you started.
@@IMDISRESPECTFULASFstill the injuries caused by Moondancer resulted in Sunfyre's death
@@sanjaykarthicks1226both Sunfyre and Aegon were going to die in the next 5 years after the Dance becuse of their injuries from previous battles even if Moondancer and Baela didn't ambush them
I see Baela’s fight as very underwhelming and frankly unimpressive because she was fighting on a healthy young dragon who had been given all the freedom and food it could want and herself was fine and had ample opportunity to plan her next move, against a dragon so crippled it could barely stay airborne, blind in one eye, and was slow, ridden by Aegon 2 who himself was still wounded badly by burns, metal melted into skin and impact of crashing into earth on Sunfyre, who were both taken by surprise.
And she then lost so badly her dragon was killed and she was left so injured she had to crawl from her dragon to avoid being killed herself and was nothing more then a prisoner for rest of her time until Aegon 2 survives. And Dragonstone still fell while Rhaenyra was still killed by Aegon 2 and Sunfyre.
I still respect her but she really should have just fled, at this point just leave the dragon that can barely fly and the enemy claimant who can barely walk and get yourself to Vale or where your queen and your half brother are staying in Duskendale before they make mistake of going to dragonstone.
I'm dreading this episode. Meleys is my favorite.
They are filming this battle now !! Can’t fucking wait. It’s going to be epic. Directed by Alan Taylor (ep 4)
Season 2 is going to be epic 🐉🐉
I can’t wait to see how bad Aegon injuries are in the show like the make up I’m sure they’ll do a great job with it. How this will affect Alicent&Aemond. More importantly how will the sea snake feel after learning the death of his wife I know it’s going hurt a lot people Eva Best sure is a great cast member.
Or they made him a " real dragon " like Daemon and Dany and they didn't bother with makeups 😂😂 I hope they did , the actor is too pretty to wear burn makeup for atleast another 2 years 🤣🤣
I can't wait to see this adapted. It looks like baela is going to be there on moondancer i hope they have her arriving late and don't make the dragon flight 2 on 2. The whole point of Aegon and sunfyres injuries was that meleys would've won an encounter with either 1v1 or with both had she had an assist. Baela watching her grandmother die while rhaenyra sits on dragon Stone would be cool to add a rift between her and her stepmother
I'm not ready for Rook's Rest 😢
Love your videos
Great video mate
The depth of westoros is incredible
I can’t wait to see this on tv. Thank you
I am loving the Battle videos. I love your videos of The Fishfeed and Rook's Rest but these recent "2.0," videos are nothing short of remarkable. You have a real talent for narration, writing, and research. Also to point out, you show alot of respect for the source material. As always great job
As of now my main four videos each week will be staying the same, house of the dragon, reach, battles, Targ history. But i'm playing around with the idea of remaking my early Aegon i, Maegor and Aenys videos with a lot more depth as a 5th video every other week. I'm also toying with the idea of bringing back the missing character videos for HOTD. But those main 4 videos should always be consistent same day, same time each week
Never stop!!!!!! The best!
Should've sent letters also to Daemon at Harrenhal!!!! a riverlander army, led by Daemon and Caraxes could have made all the difference in this battle.
And how long it took before the reinforcement arrive before duskendale submitt to Aegon II ???
@@michaelyohanes2782 Roose Bolton sent Helman Tallhart and one of the Glovers to Duskendale pretty quick in Clash of Kings I believe. Daemon and Caraxes would only increase the speed.
Episode 7 of season 2 HOTD 👀
Hope this is awesome. Cant wait for the Battle of the Gullet, Tumbleton, The Fish feed, and of course the Storming of the Dragon pit. How much of this happens in Season 2, idk. But heres hoping they keep going farther back. I want to see a Sons of the Dragon part of the anthology. Meagors wars with the Poor Fellows will be awesome on screen.
can't wait to see this one on hotd s2
In the show Rhaenys showed mercy to Aegon II and Aemond, by not burning them before escaping the Dragon Pit on Meleys.
So it will be interesting to see how this will effect the show’s portrayal of this battle. The book makes it seem like a ruthless and decisive battle.
But will Aegon and Aemond feel conflicted or remorseful about killing someone who spared them?
She crashed the coronation ceremony, killed hundreds, threatened to kill and publically humiliated the freshly crowned king and the Greens, why should they feel grateful for showing mercy when it wasn't her place to do so in the first place? Now she has sided with Rhaenyra and faces them on the battlefield as their enemy, so Aemond and Aegon have no other choice than to fight and kill her. Why should they feel conflicted?
I wonder if in the show, part of the reason Rhaenyra sends Rhaenys to Rook's Rest alone is because she blames her for Luke's death for not killing all the Greens when she had the chance at Aegon's coronation. I don't think they'll have Rhaenyra suspect it's a trap and send Rhaenys out of spite, but more like she wants Rhaenys out of her sight.
I believe Rhaenys is more likely to go against Rhaenyra's orders. Rhaenyra and her will probably discuss that it's risky, but Rhaenys will go anyway - maybe out of guilt. But show Rhaenyra would not send Rhaenys out of spite.
@@GenerationBright True they made show rheneyra too good a person😂
Why this war. A trial by seven may end this war like in Maegors time. Whom will fight for blacks and whom fight for greens. Name them.
@CristonColeLawyer I don't think so. Most of the army battles without dragon 🐉 won by Blacks. When Maegor was ready for trial of seven he had zero chance. Warriors sons are exceptional. But the result was different.
It's fascinating to think how a single battle can impact the course of the war and the possible outcomes that might determine not only victory but how strong the victor will emerge
Had Sunfyre not took part in the battle at Rook's Rest Rhaenys and Meleys might have triumphed over Aemond and Vhagar making the recruitment of the Dragonseeds unnecessary for the Blacks and bringing the Dance to a much swifter end with Vhagar either being slain or too distraught at the violent death of her rider and the Greens only having three dragons with little to no experience in war King's Landing would likely have capitulated to Rhaenyra after a lengthy blockade that could've seen a riot of the like that led to the storming of the Dragonpit but instead is targeted at overthrowing the Greens
Just a possible scenario I devised
This battle really was the end of the reign of Alicson Hightowers brat. He was a cripple who was ruined by it. He would have been slipped some poison at some point
Don't worry before all of that happens aegons gonna get rheanyra

It really depends on the pace there aiming for, but i think it is likely
nah this is going to be during mid season 2
Oh He need some Milk
😂😂😂
If they were attacking rooks rest in order to set a trap by drawing out a dragon rider into an ambush then why would they attempt to shoot down the ravens that were sent to dragonstone to request help?
Say what you want, argon 2 fights.
The queen just hides lmaooo
It took Aegon nearly 3 years to find her fat a*s but thank the Gods he did 😂😂🤣🤣
She would’ve been the greatest leader ever if not for misogyny. They all got what they deserved in the end. Even the queen that never was died in battle with honor and showing courage. I hate that GRR will never finish these books.
It wasn't the smartest move for the Greens. Their main target should have been the Velaryon fleet. If I had been the Hand of Aegon, I would have used the attack on Rook's Rest as a decoy and sent Vhagar and Sunfyre to destroy Corlys Velaryon's ships. Rhaenyra would never have exposed herself, so it was certain that it would be Rhaenys and Meleys who would answer to Lord Staunton, which means that only Syrax is left as a dragon capable of fighting in Dragonstone, and obviously Rhaenyra is unable to use her dragon. Burn the Velaryon fleet, clear the Gullet, and destroy the power of the Blacks at sea once and for all. And if Rhaenyra had, by some miracle, attempted anything with her dragon, she would have been charred by Vhagar and Sunfyre. Criston Cole's army could have scattered when Meleys arrived and Rhaenys would have been forced to return to Dragonstone, only to contemplate the disaster and find herself alone against the two dragons.
I'm sure the show will change things. Sunfyre will be ugly, rheanys will escape lol
And Vhagar will get her butt kicked by Moondancer
Right. And to ensure we know Aegon is eeeevvvvvilllll he'll be assaulting a kitchen maid while riding Sunfyre. He'll also be drunkenly taunting Rhaenys implying that he's going to force Baela to be his second wife like the conquerer he was named after.
