Love your channel. Your family is blessed and highly favored. I’m a black woman from Alabama and your videos give the best insight into American culture. Food is cheap for us, so we show our love and care through food and we make a LOT of it. So, the fact that Americans that you’ve never met are so excited to feed your family gives you the absolute best insight into American culture and social norms. Because most Americans are of the mind that it costs me nothing to be kind and I may not have much else to give a stranger, but I can feed you. ❤

Constantly out of pocket for my team at work but I also feel blessed to be able to do so, or even cooking and bringing food in for the crew. We basically take turns and it's wonderful. We actually wound up with what we called a "car fund" where any change leftover from the last order was kept because nobody was worried about a few bucks and at one point almost had $70 in it last year, It's us, we gotta take care of those around us. I'm late to this party, but wanted to share this.
Sloppy Joe has been the basis of our family Christmas dinner for over 40 years, lol.
We have always done our family gathering on Christmas Eve and my Mother long ago decided that another large family dinner so close to Thanksgiving was just too much.
She would make a slow cooker of Sloppy Joe and a big bowl of coleslaw then set out buns, paper plates, plastic silverware and whatever addons that came to mind (cheese, pickles, chips, etc). Everyone else would bring an appetizer, dessert, finger food or something else to add to the table. The atmosphere is more like an indoor picnic, low stress, easygoing and easy clean up.
We lost Mom on New Years Day 2020 but there's still always SJ and coleslaw in her memory.
BTW, try coleslaw and sliced cheddar cheese on the sandwich. If you have leftovers, it's actually tasty over pasta for a different take on spaghetti the next day. cheers!

Manwich is probably the most widely recognized / known Sloppy Joe mix, in part to their catchy slogan "A sandwich is a sandwich but a manwich is a meal". I think a lot of us will relate to Manwich as like you suggested something that can be thrown together quickly and easily at the last minute to feed the family. However, McCormick is also a very good option as you saw. McCormick is a spice brand here in the US, they produce to many spices to name. So awesome to see ya'll enjoying an old school American standby. Although I will say I can't do the whole pickle thing, I prefer a side of chips to scoop up the droppings

So glad you all tried this classic. Remember though you split the meat between three types of joes mix. The powder mix is for a full pound of meat. So if you picked McCormicks it is probably because there was a little more powder to get a bit more of the spice in it. In either case Manwich did not come in last. Happy tasting.

One of my favorite all-American sandwiches is the Monte Cristo. It was super popular in the 1960s & 70s here. It is basically Ham (thin-sliced Deli Style) and a white Cheese (usually Swiss slices), piled up between 2 slices of white bread lightly toasted - but then the whole thing is soaked in the sweetened Egg & Milk mixture that you would use for French Toast. Then you pan fry it in butter (or deep fry it) until the edges are slightly crisp, making it into a kind of stuffed French Toast filled with salty melted cheese & ham. Cover the warm sandwich with powdered sugar and serve with Strawberry Jam on the side. The Monte Cristo is a very cool and "Retro" sweet & savory sandwich that is found only in America.

@@mkshffr4936 1. I recommend putting the garlic and onion in when the hamburger is already mostly cooked, not the beginning. UNDER COOKED is a GOOD thing when its the garlic and onion!.

MANY spices are good in sloppy Joe and you never need to buy some bullshit little sloppy joe seasoning mix packet. An example of a spice that beats the crap out of the "seasoning mix" is the Ghost Pepper Curry but there are so many others.

When you mentioned "minced meat" as your term for hamburger meat or ground beef, as a native Texan I couldn't help but think of the sweet dessert pies my mom used to make called "mincemeat pie." They actually contain finely chopped beef suet, but can also contain apple, apricots, figs, raisins, brown sugar, brandy, lemon juice and zest, orange zest, allspice, cinnamon, ground cloves, salt, ginger and eggs. There are dozens of recipes that vary from this and include other ingredients as well, like honey and apricots. In the south it seems every family has their own recipes for almost everything. However, the star of this pie is beef and just isn't the same if it's left out (which you can do, but then it wouldn't be called mince"meat" would it?). One caution though. You might not want to tell little kids that it has meat in it... they might think that's yucky. When I was a kid I never knew what was in these pies, only that I really liked them. When I grew up I was surprised when I found out the "meat" in the name of the pie was quite literal. I don't remember all the ingredients my mom used in her pies, but if I can find her recipe I'll send it to you. With that, in your country do you guys have some kind of dessert pie that also includes meat?

My grandma loved her minced meat pie. According to our traditions, the meat was the basis and the other fruit and vegetables were things left over from canning, or left--over meals. The taste would be slightly different at times due to the sugar content, but with the crust and the meat, it was pretty much the same.

Sloppy Joes are a quick dinner meal. Our family has used both Manwich and McCormack. We use Manwich most often. Manwich also makes a Thick and Chunky version which has chunks of tomatoes and diced green pepper and onion….and also a BOLD version which has a more spicy kick to it, if you like more spicy food. They are all good and easy to make. I buy the thick and chunky version these days. Our family has sloppy joes about every two months. We have potato chips as a side, most of the time. But sometimes we have French fries or potato salad.
Do you make potato salad in NZ? Here in the US, potato salad is at every cookout or barbecue or picnic. And there are many varieties. Some people make it with mayonnaise and mustard. Some make it with just mayonnaise. Some make it with ketchup. Some make a Baked Potato version with Sour cream and bacon. There is a German potato salad, which has a sweet/sour flavor. A friend of mine makes a Deviled Egg version. So good!

    • @kathleenriley643
      @kathleenriley643 Před 8 měsíci

My husband had a strong preference for the BOLD manwich, so that is what I always made and my kids liked it too! He also preferred the German style potato salad as that is what his Mexican mother always made. My oldest son's mother in law made deviled eggs one Thanksgiving and my husband made a real pig of himself, so I questioned him about it and he said they were the best deviled eggs he ever tasted, turns out they were totally different and had a bit of sweetness to them and my husband declared they weren't deviled eggs but angelic eggs. and that is what she now calls them.

Only one suggestion from me. Don't pour off the pickle juice, keep it refrigerated. On a hot day, it is truly refreshing and I always have some around to enjoy. As there are many varieties of pickle juices, you may find that 'Bread& Butter' suits you better than 'Kosher Dill' or other types. It doesn't take a lot, a half a shot to a shot's worth is good. It can also be used to pickle bits of veggies or eggs and so forth. Starting with something you like is always easier than never quite getting something homemade to quite suit you.

Another good way to go is just ground beef and onions seasoned only with salt and pepper, just a loose meat sandwich. I know I’m a bit late to the party, but as a Yank who grew up in the heyday of Sloppy Joes, I thought I would chime in. Canned Manwich is probably the standard because you just open a can and dump it in the pan with the meat. It wins by convenience, alone. McCormick is a very popular dry spice packet company here. They also have seasoning packets for tacos, enchiladas, various gravies, and so forth.

There’s a “Bold” version of Manwich with more flavor than the original that I bet Nadine might prefer. Also it wasn’t clear if you drained the grease (fat) from the meat before adding the sauce. That can also make a big difference in the flavor - too much grease can drown out the spices.
By the way, Vanilla Coke is sort of hard to find even here in the US, especially over the past 2 years since a lot of ‘specialty’ sodas have been less available during the pandemic.

McCormick spices and coke regular, potato chips. You don't need a mix you can use your own spices. Manwich is not the original sloppy joe mix. It just made it easier one can not a spice mix and tomato paste and/or sauce.

Sloppy Joes were inventied in the1930's in cafe in Sioux City, Iowa, The chef added tomato paste to the "loose meat" sandwich he made. Manwich hit the market in 1969. Loose meat sandwiches is just like cooked (minced in your world) beef that is added to a bun - may have spices added.. It was really big in the north Central USA.

It was fun to watch you eat those. I haven't had one in many, many years. Just FYI, McCormick is probably the biggest spice company in the US. Just about every spice in my kitchen cabinet is McCormick. So it doesn't surprise me that they would make a good spice mix for sloppy joes.

Back in the 50's Sloppy Joes included finely minced onions, green pepper and celery which were coked along with the meat. Worschestershire Sauce was also included. Manwich has a lot of vinegar which I think is a bit overpowering. So I make it from scratch. With the veggies added it was really a meal.

My mother made them from a recipe she found in some old magazine from the 1940's... they were based on "loose meat sandwiches" sold in Sioux City, Iowa, in the 1930s and were the creation of a cook named Joe ... there are ongoing disputes about which Joe, and where... but we made them from scratch. The canned sauce, called Manwich, didn't come out until1969, and the seasoning packets came out even later... I was a teenager by then, and didn't care much for the canned version, since we had adapted the recipe for our own family's tastes...

It has the name, "sloppy"' for a reason... It's meant to fall out of the bun and hit your plate, so when you're done devouring the actual "sammich", you use a fork and clean up the tailings. Here in America, at least, Spokane, WA. we usually just use a fork and eat like wild animals. Manwich is awesome, quick and easy, but you can google a lot of homemade recipes that are way better than our canned stuff. Sloppy Joes over here are just a very tasty way to make everyone in the family happy on a full-on budget... Don't forget to make fries. Screw potato chips...
