We still enjoy it, especially during our cold months which we've entered. We live on a farm and during the winter when my husband is outside with our livestock, I'll fix this for our lunch and we'll eat it sitting on the couch in front of a fire in the fireplace. However, we do garden so we make our soups from scratch. Cheddar and swiss are two favorites for the cheese. Cheddar has that traditional flavor and swiss has better gooiness with an equally formidable flavor.
Don't wimp out and use American cheese. Please have some respect for the sandwich.

Two slices of cheese MINIMUM. As a Wisconsinite, Wisconsin being the Dairy State, you can never have too much cheese on anything ❤
Also, the United States is comprised of many different cultural regions, so the South will make foods differently from the Midwest, New England, and the West Coast. Some restaurants make grilled cheese with pickles, some don't. Always look for little Family owned diners in smaller towns. They tend to have the most "home cooked" flavors. There are variations of the grilled sandwich called "Melts", which are all worth trying!

For the Patty Melt, it basically a hamburger on a grill cheese typically with Swiss cheese and sautéed onions (but some people have been known to use American cheese or Cheddar). A Tuna Melt is a grilled cheese with Tuna Salad and American Cheese. And the Turkey Melt is a grilled cheese with grilled Turkey slices, Tomatoes and American Cheese. Although, i sometimes add bacon.

When I make grilled cheese, I butter both sides. Toast one side of each slice, flip it, then add the cheese to one and put the other bread on top. Grilling both sides of the bread just adds a little extra crunch! And using mayo is amazing. Since it's really just egg and oil, you're basically coating your grilled cheese with fried eggs. Some nice additions...Ham, Bacon, Philly Steak, slice of tomato, diced onion, or sliced jalapenos.

Something I noticed in this video, they seem to be cooking them on too low of heat. It should be about the same temp of pan as what you use to fry eggs- that way the butter on the outside will crisp the bread a little, instead of making it soggy.

Grilled cheese sandwiches and Campbell's Tomato Soup goes back to kid's lunches in the 1920s and 30s. It was a relatively cheap and filling meal for 3 or 4 people. My mom always made ours with Miracle Whip because that is what her mom could afford. You should try one with mayo for that little bit of tang. Like many may have done, you can make one and split it four ways.

Hi from Southern California. I was born in Connecticut in 1952 and Grilled Cheese And Campbell's Tomato Soup was a regular on our table.
As others have said here, you had to use Campbell's and you had to use milk not water.
Also, my mother would make two versions of the sandwich. One just had Kraft American Pricessed Cheese...and it had to be Kraft...and the other included sliced tomatos. A grilled cheese and tomato sandwich is still one of my favorites.
We had a very heavy waffle iron with reversible plates. Waffles on one side and a griddle on the other. It would hold four sandwiches at a time and by closing the lid the sandwiches would be pressed thin and very crispy. I sure wish we'd kept it.
You mentioned pickles. If you order a grilled cheese in a diner they will give you a few bread and butter pickles. My family drove from Connecticut to Phoenix in 1963 and I ate a ton of grilled cheese (with pickles) along the way at countless Howard Johnsons diners.
Nice memories. Thanks for reminding me about this American classic.

  • @edwilson7187
    @edwilson7187 Před 6 měsíci

Best way to make a grilled cheese is to melt enough butter in the pan to coat the bread on one side. Putting the butter on the bread rips the bread most of the time so melting it in the pan then putting the bread in the pan is better. Move the bread around till you soak the butter up, then slightly brown the bread on one side. flip the bread and slightly brown it on the unbuttered side and flip the bread over and put the cheese in. Don't have the heat up too high so the bread doesn't burn before the cheese melts. Flip it a few times till the bread is toasted like you like it then serve. If you use Velvetta cheese you cut from the block cook it on a little lower heat and add a small amount of butter while cooking to help "steam" the bread and melt the cheese a little better. Tomato soup made with milk not water and the sandwich is the best quick hot meal you can make.

We had what we called a sandwich maker when I was a kid; apparently, it's the same as a toastie maker. Used it for all sorts of sandwiches!
In our house, we never use white bread (rye, sour dough, garlic, or plain wheat is what we use), prefer to use a griddle (I've been looking for another sandwich maker) or a panini press, never use mayo on the inside, and sometimes switch out the tomato soup for tomato bisque. We like the savory flavor of the bisque over the sweeter tomato soup.
Those are some other ideas to try if you want to have more options. 😊

Using mayo on the bread instead of butter is great too. It gives it a little different flavor, but you have to watch it close because it cooks a little faster.

I add pepperoni slices sprinkled with garlic powder nestled between two layers of American cheese on butter-spread bread, then fried until golden brown to go along with my tomato soup that has just a touch of hot sauce added for spice 🤗

Oddly enough I have been eating grilled cheese sandwiches for a week due to a sore mouth and jaw due to dental work. Nadine, regarding putting mayo and other things on a grilled cheese sandwich, simply cook the grilled cheese as normal then when it's done, put it on a plate, open the hot sandwich up and spread on mayo and top with things like lettuce, tomato, onion, etc. Whatever you like then put it back together. It's SUPER delicious. That's how I've been doing mine all week.

This video just warmed my heart! As a chef, at the end of the day, my all-time favorite comfort food is grilled cheese and tomato soup! There is just something about its simplicity that is just ultimately satisfying!

I grew up with 2 versions thin bread, thin sliced cheddar, very thin coat mayo, buttered outside the toasted in the toaster oven letting the cheese melt out and get toasted. Then from the other side of the family, it was regular bread or thick bread with butter on the outside miracle whip thinly coated on the inside American cheese 1-2 slices

American Southerner here: my mother always uses a little mayo on the inside of the sandwich, and she also slices some tomatoes and seasons them lightly with salt and pepper and Italian seasoning blend. She also puts mayo on the outside and uses that as the fat to fry it with, but I prefer butter. The “grilled” part of a grilled cheese refers to a flat top grill, which no one has at home, so we approximate it with a frying pan on the stove 🍳
You’ll hear that Southerners are particular about our mayo and that’s true: Duke’s is the best, but some prefer Hellman’s. My grandmother, though, always liked Blue Plate the best! Never store brand, though, and never Miracle Whip.

When I worked at Village Inn, a breakfast restaurant like Denny's, we had a sandwich called the Grown Up Grilled Cheese.
You add Colby Jack and a slice of American, 2 strips of bacons, some diced onions and a thin slice of tomato, with some mustard on the bread and grilled with liquid butter.
This is all grilled together, so the tomato is hot as well, which gives the sandwich a mustard/ketchup flavor to it.
    That thing is delicious.
