  • This is the most up-to-date upload to my previous video about General Server Knowledge. We will go over the basics of starting a digital distribution platform, what it can cost you to run servers, and how you connect servers.
Software Inc. is a business simulation game where players manage a software company from its humble beginnings to a thriving enterprise. The game incorporates various aspects of running a software company, including designing and developing software, hiring and managing employees, and dealing with competition and market trends.
The "Server & Digital Distribution Basics" expansion adds new layers of complexity to the game. Players can now develop server software and provide digital distribution platforms for their products. This expansion introduces challenges such as managing server infrastructure, optimizing network performance, and competing with other companies in the digital marketplace. It adds depth and realism to the simulation, allowing players to explore additional strategies for success in the ever-evolving software development and distribution world.

Correction: if it is Mbps, you pronounce it Mega-BIT per second

Sometimes I just forget and go with my own terminology.

"I don't have any deals for hosting" *2 hosting deals in the list*

I must've just not seen those at all, but then again at those early years, taking on those deals is rough, I have bad memories when Software Inc was in its alpha stages.

is hosting even worth it? whenever I try my internet costs are way higher than I earn and then the electricity (which isnt that high i guess) but overall I'm losing money

Presently, no. In the Alpha versions, you could sustain yourself entirely on hosting, but then you were looking more like a data center with all the servers you would need. Having contracts is just another way to increase your reputation and find high-level applicants when hiring. Overall, you cannot just fully live on hosting in this beta series. Hosting contracts for me come around once every couple of months, and they use a lot less bandwidth than I previously knew.
In addition, previously, in Alpha 8 or 9, you could accept a contract, your payout would be around 0.98 cents per MB used for an estimated 900 MB max contract, and once you had the contract, 24 hours go by, suddenly your 10 GB server(s) are overloaded and your losing money. In this stage of the game, you could accept 10-15 hosting contracts and make millions. Now? It's rare for a hosting contract to be accepted, and it predicts a max bandwidth of 50 GB, and you never even pass 1 GB of bandwidth by the time the contract ends.
