I don't think Kai is dead. Her armor looks pretty much intact when she's floating in space and I think if they were going to kill her off she'd have taken off her helmet or been completely incinerated by the ship explosion. I think she's gonna be similar to Linda in CE or Chief in Infinite where she's in some sort of emergency cryo and is eventually recovered.
Yeah Kai has already essentially been Linda this whole time so just seems like they're gonna take a bit more from Linda and have Kai be "dead" but brought back later

Haven’t finished the video yet, but that’s what’s blown me away. No one is talking that the flood have access to the knowledge of not only Halsey (idk if freezing her would stop anything) but also Parongonsky which is a MAJOR security threat to the UNSC.

@@Donut833Cryo doesn't stop the flood from spreading, hence why the forerunners made the rings. So Halsey dies really early in the silver timeline.
I think there is a grave mind on the Halo itself. When talking to guilt spark he insulates that there is dark things in the darkness below and Chief’s helmet was broken somewhere inside as half the visor is missing.
I also think Kai will likely be found alive floating in space much like Chief in the games.

Chief absorbed Cortana through his palm in Halo 2 at the beginning when Cortana says “Me inside your head now.” And than chief touches her with his hand and she’s absorbed through his suit and deactivating the bomb so chief punching the console and retrieving Cortana totally makes sense canonwise in the Halo TV show

Well the flood we see in the games are infected by combat forms I think you're right in the aspect that this is basically the flood ancient humanity first encountered.
But still didn't like the whole last of us type shit.
If you remember the original spores in the books, they force anything they infect to become docile then rage. They nailed it with the flood spore set up. The infection forms look like smaller larva forms. I liked that evolutionary line.
The biggest problem I had with this episode was the biologist who should have known better, being a biologist messing with the sample. Like any biologist with a brain stem and nothing else knows, you shouldn't interact with unknown specimen without any protection. I liked the rest of the whole episode, though. Bravo.
Tbh if a Japanese anime company or even the original castlevania team, decided to make a Halo anime series. I know it would have been absolutely awesome and almost accurate

The VA for 343 Guilty Spark is Harry Lloyd, best known for playing Viserys Targaryen in season one of GoT.
If that performance in GoT is any indication for how well he can portray a descent into madness, I think that's a fantastic casting choice.
Oh Harry Lloyd, cool. He was also brilliantly creepy in the David Tennant-era Doctor Who two-parter "Human Nature/Family of Blood"
I'm kind of pissed, tbh.
Maybe they'll do something good with the flood. It's possible. But they've already missed the mark somewhat, in my opinion.
The original story had a very, very specific structure that the flood fit into: You have the covenant and the humans fighting each other. Then you find this mysterious ring, you wonder what it is and what it's for. Then you find out it's some kind of weapon and the covenant want it. Keyes goes for this weapons cache that supposedly exists. You go to the control room and suddenly Cortana is like "Oh no, go find Keyes it's not a weapons cache." And so you go into one of the best missions in the series knowing that something is wrong but not what. Then you see the tape and you're in the room where it happened and BAM the flood. You find Guilty Spark and he says he can help, you almost help him activate the ring until BAM another twist, it doesn't kill flood, it kills their food. Now the humans have basically all died, the covenant are being hunted, the flood is taking over everything and Guilty Spark is trying to get your head and dispose of the rest. And you have to engage in a mad dash to blow up the ring and GTFO.
There's a rhythm to this story.
* You have the mystery of Halo which turns out to be a weapon that will kill everyone.
* You have the covenant as your main enemy until suddenly they're not.
* You see the entire ring with the covenant and your marine mates, only to then see it infected by the flood.
You cannot have this long mystery about what Halo is anymore on the show, because that was basically solved before Chief set foot on it and the flood has already been revealed. And you can no longer have this complete shift in perspective from Chief fighting with his marine buddies against the covenant on the Halo, to being all alone on the ring trying to stop the flood.
Because they did all of this stuff out of order, it just doesn't work nearly as well as it worked in the original story.
Maybe they'll still pull out an interesting story, who knows. But basically they've already sabotaged the story of being on the Halo ring before Chief even set foot on it, imo.
While you are right that kai destroys the CAS Carrier, the one Jorge destroyed was actually a CSO Supercarrier, which is almost 6 times the length of the CAS.

The flood seems more like the initial outbreak in the forerunner trilogy where it began with pets changing slightly then cannibalism cults started forming out of humans who had ate parts of the animals but again the changes were subtle
Surely the forerunner would have different strains of the flood on different installations, if there is such a thing as a different strain of flood. In the games, we only got to see the feral outbreak in Halo CE and the gravemind in H2 and H3, so there is still some place for imagination.

Yeah what he saw in the games was the result of an infection form burrowing into the hosts chest cavity. This is a spore infection but still with all of that biomass it's accumulated it's not too far fetched that we might see a proto-gravemind if theres a season 3 with Parangosky serving as the core much like Keyes did in the first game.

@@UrNeighboursDog yes the end goal is the same, but I mean the flood has many ways to spread and will not use the same strategy everytime, even though we know that " one spore can destroy an entire species ". Still we don't know where they are going with the flood, will they even mention that they are precursors ? In recent books we learned that in the regular timeline, the flood isn't actually a corrupted version of the precursors, they are it, that's all. That's what the last one said to the humans that committed self delete after hearing it. The idea of the mantle isn't real anymore and the precursors came to wipe the slate clean. After all they've been experiencing every form and shape of life/energy since the beggining of the universe... They are worse than an eldritch god.
I'm just afraid that the showrunners won't even grasp 1/10 of this... I guess time will tell.
I do appreciate how much they showed us. They didn't try to play into all the ambiguity in order to make it a cliffhanger or something. They show us the Halo, they show us the flood, they show us a Forerunner AI. I don't love the overall direction the show is taking the story, and all of the "side quests" but I do appreciate the way this episode was structured and how much they gave us

Yeah, the arbiter we see here in season 2 seems to be the one that became the heretic leader from the games, and the new arbiter (the one we play as in the game etc) should be showing up in season 3

I thought as bad as the show has been, the finale was sick. If the producers keep listening to feedback from the community, I have some hope for a season 3
this was really just... an improvement over the first season. It's a massive missed opportunity and the writers really have no idea what they're doing with the plot. It just never feels like Halo, and when it does actually feel like Halo, it's just for a few fleeting moments. They could have used this season to wipe the slate clean and do right by the source material, but they doubled down on the stuff the fans complained about and then rushed through stuff that made the whole plot of the games work. They really don't seem to care about the source material at all. They should have left Makee or whatever dead, they could have kept 70% of what was here but cut out the spartan 3 subplot and the plot where he doesn't have his armor for like 2.5 episodes. it really should have just been the battle of reach for the vast majority of the season, with each of his spartan friends dying in defense of the planet with him leaving on the autumn with keyes. no flood, no spartan 3, no unnecessary plotlines.
but instead, we got something less cohesive than a Joe Biden speech, with more meandering plotlines than NCIS and basically none of what made people appreciate Halo's story telling 23 years ago. The pacing is terrible, the subplots are basically unwatchable, and this has done nothing but disappoint. and it disappoints not because it's objectively terrible, but it's because there's obvious talent behind the scenes and that talent is wasted on someone's fanfiction version of what the Halo story is.

I think there will be more opportunities for traditional combat forms and flood in season 3. The outbreak in the show mimics exactly what happened on the Mona Lisa and Forerunner series where it’s not limited by just being a gameplay enemy. I thought them emphasizing the Flood spores targeting neural tissue, (causing the victims to freeze up/be rigid), is consistent with the Halo as a weapon also targeting sufficiently advanced species. If they opt to stay with the tiny infection forms it wouldn’t make or break it for me, I think it’s more realistic where there is no hive yet. In the screenshot of infected Janine trying to fit through the prison bars it looks like there is infection form nestled between her neck and tentacle. I also think based on the dialogue in the intro w/ spark and the ending that there is a gravemind in the halo depths, chief asks about it

Plot twist. Keyes and silver team aren't dead. They just have a longer respawn time than Makee.
I definitely think that with how the Ancestor speaks to Kwan, she was assimilated into the flood and has managed to retain a tiny sense of self. Her image was used to lead Kwan to release the Flood, but the Ancestor's dialog seems genuine and protective. I think she fought the Flood back to let Kwan get away in hopes of stopping the Flood.
This is definitely confusing. I think it's a sort of bio-weapon inside of kwan that can stop weaker stages of the flood momentarily and that the actual "ancestor" is dead and infected but who knows.

The infection in this game is what I imagine the infection to have been like when ancient humanity first discovered the flood
It doesn’t break lore because ancient humans experimented with the powder they found on an ancient ship on pets called Pherus. They slowly got infected and started to cannibalize each other. Humans even ate some of them and it turned into a real outbreak

2 were major characters. Terminals show that there have been lots of Arbiters over the years.
1 Arbiter at a time, it's a title. This Arbiter in the show was suppose to die to Sgt Forge.

This is the only episode I actually went and watched before watching a re-cap/commentary video on it, was legitimately pretty enjoyable for me and my older bro.
I think the way the flood is shown here could actually fit into the lore. They were infected by a very small amount of weak, millennia old flood spores. The tiny infection forms are kinda similar to the little flood tadpole dudes you see swimming around in halo 2. Maybe because the infection is weak it's using the little biomass it has to create smaller infection forms to spread as fast as possible. idk lol.
Also it seems that even though they are getting control of the host's CNS very quick, they haven't converted all of the body to flood biomass, again possibly because it's a very weak outbreak (I would say this is like a stage before feral if such a thing exists). This could be why they aren't fully mutated yet and given time they would become full combat forms. This does all assume the show runners are competent however, which is a fairly big stretch but tbf, the one episode they've handled well has been the flood episode so may potentially be a good sign for S3.
adding onto this, i imagine this is more or less how the flood affect the atmosphere around them, and how they infected High Charity through the life support systems; not by rushing them with infection forms, but using microscopic, airborne spores. this has the added benefit of being a fairly budget-friendly way to start off the whole outbreak, using the "real" flood sparingly in a season where they already ate most of their CGI budget in other scenes with the Covenant. For what little it's worth, I think this take on the initial outbreak is great, if not the beautiful CE one.

I'm just hoping the do the flood proper justice in S3, they handled them well here with a very small outbreak but I'm worried that with a larger one that they'll just become space zombies which would be lame.

I kind of understand why 343i hasn't. Not only do halo fans ceaselessly complain about flood levels, but it's hard to bring them back and still have new enemies be important I think. Because if you do, either they make any other irrelevant as they overtake and destroy everything or you downgrade them to an annoyance.
I think 343i will bring them back in proper force but maybe they're building up to it slowly as some sort of grand strategy the gravemind has.

Its not a SCAR 17. Those are classified as battle rifles, and are chambered in 7.62 NATO. What they gave him was objectively worse, especially for flood combat, the SCAR 16S, which is chambered in 5.56 NATO. On the other hand, most halo rifles are are chambered in the aforementioned 7.62 NATO, which would make the SCAR 17 a much better in universe choice than the 16S that we got.
Wth? I thought in the future the unsc would have fielded a much bigger and thicker caliber bullet than 7.62
It was a great episode, genuine surprises, multiple "I can't believe they did that" from me but in a positive way.
The dumbest thing though is still the security on Onyx, it's an absolute farce! It's as if it's run by a bunch of distracted teenagers nobody takes their jobs seriously (besides the angry ODST lady that Kai probably killed)

I remember as a kid watching my father play halo 3 and the marines getting swarmed by infection forms on Flood Gate. It was truly a horrifying moment, and still is a bit horrifying to this day. I always imagined how grewsome it would be for this two feet tall mass of flesh wrapping its tentacles around you and burrowing into your nervous system. I can't lie that I'm a bit disappointed that we don't get to see that aspect of the Flood in this show; instead it's a generic virus looking infection that I don't really think expresses that horror I felt as a kid. Part of the horror was that once you were caught by an infection form, or a spore, your transformation was inevitable - and most, if not all cases, are instantaneous. In other words, there is an ounce of hope after someone is infected (as with what they did with Halsey) which I feel defeats the purpose of the Flood, and by extension the creation of the Halo rings.
Thank you, I don't feel insane seeing someone else write this. It's just a joke to me, the flood were nuts, I remember the Library on Halo CE, I couldn't play that shit on my own as a kid cause it was terrifying. I don't want generic zombie infection, to me the flood outbreak is violent, quick and like a blitzkrieg, once it's starting you have no hope of getting the upper hand is the sensation. But no, Halsey is cyropodded as some form of hope.
Yeah this all felt very generic to me. I felt like I was watching Power Rangers in the actions scenes, and the flood was lame. A tentacles out of the neck? Nah, you see marine explode into s terrifying mutant with swords for arms, THAT is the flood. Pretty poor attempt imo. And it seems to randomly infect everyone except the main characters.
It hasn’t progressed that far yet, the first few infections are from spores. And they’ve bred combat forms. They’ll mutate and we’ll have carrier forms, maybe even tank and crawler forms. But we’ll have to see. But I imagine that this is kind of showing what the very first stages of the infection are. Before it has progressed. Right now the flood is just worried about getting as many combat forms to forcefully infect. Then on to the advanced forms.
The flood reminded me of the part in Primordium where Chakas is on the “train” with the flood infected forerunners, they’re not moving but clearly flood mutated.
I really hope the show doesn’t get a season 3. The controversy, the bad characters, the withdrawal from the source material is just all around not good.
My theory for why the infected hosts freeze up is maybe something with the flood infecting the nerves and the spinal cord, maybe inhibiting any brain signals reaching the body? Just a random thought I had.
honestly they could use any excuse with the flood, like the containment spores were really old and primitive so they weren't as effective. Kinda like the infection form that infected Jenkins
If I were to try and patch up this retcon, I'd say that these lab samples are ones that Forerunners experimented on to reduce their effectiveness

A few things:
1) The intro with John talking to a voice with in the dark. I honestly thought this was a distant future debrief in a dim light ONI facility like in the books. It wasn’t until later as the episode progressed it clicked.
2) The producer/director/writer has an incredible opportunity with how this episode wrapped up to converge with the normal timeline cannon if they are smart about it. They kinda complicated that with point three.
3) Halsey is too important to be wrote out quite yet so I’m guessing the infected Halsey as immune Johnson potentially…idk that one’s a mess but yeah. Either that or infected Halsey and our dear Admiral are without a doubt going to be a combined grave mind.
I’m actually fairly excited to see what comes of it.

@@toringmort4231 ok. The UNSC is engaged above the ring. Survivors make their way onto the surface and link up. Much like in Halo: The Flood novel. Chief is more or less fast tracked to the Library plot point it seems from the season finale. The Covenant Corvette he crash landed (essentially the Autumn in this case), could be used to destroy the ring in much the same way. He gets off the ring after blowing the corvette, maybe even with one of those Spikes they introduced mid season. Insert the next novel Halo: First Strike. He returns to Reach (Onyx maybe? - timelines jacked so work with me) to find Halsey in cryo with Miranda instead of Linda like the novels. It comes to light Halsey has some form of immunity (ie my Johnson comment) from a genetic or other defect.
It’s not a 1-1 but they could still merge the timelines back to a sensible order. There’s still so much left in the Halo story past the first ring that they could continue with. Whether this happens or not is the question.
I like the show for what it is. A Halo-esque saga with all the things I grew of loving in Sci-Fi. Things I was immediately addicted to when I fired up my original Xbox up with CE in the tray and hearing the music at the menu. Yes it’s arguably heretical on how the started but as a halo fanatic I hope they do the timeline we all know. But again, it’s its own thing. Who knows. I hope it succeeds if for nothing else some in universe live action content.

-they said they listened to complaints from the first season but just doubled down and only had chief in armor in maybe 3 eps max and barely any screen time when they did.
-the seasons marketed as the fall of reach, arguably one of the most important events that set in motion the discovery of what the rings are and means and it was really only one episode and happens off screen.
-its weird they're making chief go thru these character arcs so early and that he's so "dark" if that makes sense.
-the "I'm also a demon" line from makee was cringe af.
-spark needs more reverb.
-the flood is just generic zombies. so far
-I'm sick of seeing modern day weapons like the mk17 and the b&t apcs in the year 2500, especially when there's halo equivalents like the smg and dmr.
- i found myself actually rooting for the arbiter when he was beating the breaks off chief lmao and disappointed the arbiter just walks away instead of killing him and then saying" why not accept your death", like bruh you literally generically let him live when you could've just stabbed him but let him get back up for bad writing plot armor reasons.
-and also not a big one but I'm not liking that they're making the humans the bad guys so early basically downplaying the fight for humanity's survival because they barely showed any of that really(yes i know oni's bad but that should be explored later) the halo games have been about humanity coming together fighting against all odds. its generic to make us "bad if we control the ring" like some avatar shit so early....

It's like they ignored the games but tried to inject every single bit of lore from the books all at once without knowing how the lore fits together.
Also I really dislike the genre shift 343 did way back in Halo 4 from scifi shooter, to fantasy drama. Don't get me wrong, I actually like the emotional arc of Halo 4 with Chief and Cortana and when drama is done well it can be amazing (see the movie Moon from 2009).
But the complete retcon of what the forerunners are and this "chosen/blessed one" BS can be directly traced back to how they handled the Librarian, Didact, and Prometheans. This has caused so many plot holes and completely retextualizes the themes from the games in ways that are surface level drama at best and completely nonsensical at worst. The first two games were an allegory for war in the Middle East and how religious zealotry make bad thing happen. The games were about Chief being a flat character so that all of the other characters around him shone brighter. He was the rock, the foundation, and that really worked well to let other characters react around him and let the characterization shine. The original twist of Halo kills the flood's food is a really good example of this. Chief is a really monotone character there, but Spark and Cortana are going at it and it's really entertaining to watch.

I think Kai is still alive. That shot of her floating in space among the covenant ship wreckage made it seem like she's intact and unconscious similar to how in Infinite how Chief was floating in space in armor Survival mode
18:13 Chakas was the one who had an imprinted human soul with Riser and Galmapar. Venebra had no imprint, she only had a programing made by the Librarian to guide them to Forerrunner research facilities in the ring in case they found something odd, thats why at some point in the novel she takes the group towards the Primordial, but as far as I know, Venebra had no imprint.
I was shocked that they did the flood already and honestly for a first outbreak scenario i like how they did the flood. I really like how over time their bodies break downore and more, by the end of it that patient zero scientist was fully mutating, growing tendrils and breaking her body thorough the cage, i loved that.
I honestly emjoyed this season's finale more than last seasons. It was really and especially The Flood and also 343 at the end was amazing. One thing more, i was hoping to see some sort of teaser for Noble Team during the fall of reach but there's weren't any, so i hope to see them in future filler seasons

When you said the covenant arrive on halo through the clouds. I actually think its the UNSC. You hear the com chatter coming through chiefs helmet and they did get that upper hand in space. More covenant are coming for sure. But i think this was the intro to vice admiral stanford possibly being our new captain keyes. But ackerson being the flood proto sacrifice might also be the stand in Keyes death for next season.

Definitely UNSC ships coming down they will probably do something similar like they did in infinite with them setting up defenses and taking a offensive against the up coming covenant but it will probably be a little more better than infinite considering they aren’t stranded/ambushed but who knows with this show when chief finally comes to help the UNSC they probably be in the same situation as they were in infinite with chief having to come in and save them and round them up to fight while earth is being devoured by the flood can’t wait to see how that plot line goes since it’s very unique in seeing how earth could be potentially lost in this timeline since they don’t have the help of the elites this time around

i agree about Soren using a random SCAR instead of any weapon from halo, one thing I did like and notice about them however is on the covenant cruiser all the Spartan III's had commando rifles from infinite and Kai was the only one with a MA5C AR, added to the "they are cheap and expendable" narrative imho

Honestly when Episode 8 started I kind of figured out who he was talking to because the way the voice Chief was talking to acted and sounded 100% like 343 Guilty Spark, and I hope it is because that will be the most cannon thing the show has going for it besides the entire fight scenes in the episode.
I think this version of Spark sounds and acts very different. Less excitable. But it kind of works.

10:45 The whole significance of the coin flip motif is Chief coming to terms with the fact that he controls his own fate. The "Arbiter" of his own destiny, if you will ;)
He believes his life has been decided by others since childhood: Halsey > Spartan Program > UNSC > ONI. The coinflip is showing that either A) he really does have luck on his side, or B) he has total agency as a reclaimer/chosen one. Either way, the coinflip is not a literal decider to go back for Kai and the 3's, its just symbolic. We don't see where the coin lands because we don't have to, Chief has finally decided that he is in control of his own actions.
They even have this as part of the “did you make it come up heads” conversation, it’s John choosing

I'm guessing it's a different infection because we never actually seen what a non-infection form infection would potentially be. Kinda like how the original Flood outbreak happened with the dust before infection forms came to be. I guess we'll see next year or so if we see infection forms and the mutation we all know from the games. And considering in the Mona Lisa, we know contact with the Flood, whether by touch, breathing in spores, or even bites/scratches can or will spread the infection, albeit slower than a normal dog sized infection form
I do love the lines from the mystic in Kwan's vision, her describing the flood is very Halo like during the Forerunner saga when the Primoridial describes the Flood
There was one shot that really gave me shivers. That moment when you see chiefs lower part, holding is helmet to his wrist just like in the infinite trailer. Loved it
I genuinely believe that this last episode was 9.5/10 I feel that the showrunner had a real impact with his experience on TWD, this season definitely got better as it went along and I suspect it had to do with him having more of an impact on the scripts later in the season... Really hopeful for season 3

I am actually fine with how the flood is being portrayed to an extent, not having people fully transform right away because I guess that could be explained as weakened versions of infection cells.
I just hope that as new cells are generated, the infection process becomes more like the source materials infection because having the flood just be human looking zombies instead of mutilated versions of the original host... If I wanted to see that then I could watch other zombie movies that stick to their source material far better.
