    The iconic Rolex Explorer is back at 36mm where it belongs! Rolex finally acknowledges the enthusiasts and its glorious roots with this return to form.
    But for me personally it missed the mark! The key is the watch stance that the 36mm is known for is gone because of a new taper and smaller lug width. Only 1mm but it makes a big difference in visual impact on the wrist.
    It doesn't quite feel like a true explorer! But it is a NEW EXPLORER! In an all new direction! More refined and cleaned up ready for desk duty!

    It's very close to the old 36mm Explorer. The 19mm lugs are not an issue to find straps. The only issue is the spring-bar holes that sit close to the case. So avoid thick leather straps or thick NATO straps. The case has a little beveled edge to help support the end link. This will rub on your strap more than older Rolex references. All Rolex watches are meant and designed to wear on a bracelet, but this Explorer with 19mm is still a strap monster. This version is really refined but it's still one of the most versatile watches you can buy. It checks all boxes... Luxury, sport, dress, outdoor, work, casual, time only watch, and no one will know it's a Rolex. You are correct... this will look small at first but after a few days it will look and feel perfect. Many of us got use to wearing large watches and younger guys that are new to watches, did not grow up wearing small classic size watches ( pre-1998). So the size will throw you off a bit. However, 34-39 is the correct classic proper size for watches. Aesthetically 34-39/40mm is correct if the case/dial design is done right. As an older guy in my 50's, large watches look disproportional and look very out of place. Especially with a suit or smart casual wear. It's one thing to wear a large watch that's functional (diver, Chrono), it makes sense. It's another dying trend to wear big watches. A watch the size of a tea cup plate? No thank you it still looks off. We can thank Panerai and fashion watches of the 90's for the trend. Thankfully the Swiss watch industry is going back to classic wearable sizes. I got mine September 2021 and it's been my daily work week watch for a year. This and my Speedy are difficult to choose what I should wear.

      Seems like all my watches are going the way of 19mm straps soon. Spirit 37mm, Vintage Grand Seiko, bb36, and another unkonwn gs that is on the to buy list. When I reviewed the 36mm datejust after this watch with 20mm lug width I loved how it wore on my wrist. Very surprising, and that was the trigger point for me to get into 36mm watches.

      My thought and I wouldn't quite go that far, although I can agree with premise of your comment. I just purchased this in 2 tone and will of course where it. What I am disappointed in is the entire Rolex AD market. Love the watch but the entire experience for me, wasn't positive. I am plagiarizing someone else's comment I read somewhere. But I went to my AD and wink wink pretended I wanted a Rolex, and they wink wink pretended that they would sell me one. Here's my name, contact info, never heard back. And you need to do x y and z, yeah not happening. Not happy I had to go to the gray market but it was a lessor of two evils in my mind. Lastly to me this isnt even close to a real investment, reminds me of the crypto market and watching a ton of really good friends losing there ass on it. Maybe for whomever gets this when I kick the bucket! Sure. Lol.

    Ive got the 114270 and 124270 in front of me now. I feel the opposite. The new 36 feels like the larger watch because of the bolder indices. Much prefer the new 19mm lug width. The 114270 is dominated by the bracelet. Why would a 36mm watch have a 20mm width bracelet like the old 5 series 40mm GMT/Sub/ Explorer 2 etc ???

    • @EscapementWatch
      @EscapementWatch  Před 2 lety +3

  • @SPQR-Z
    @SPQR-Z Před 2 lety +4

    Your analysis is spot on. Why decrease the lug width if your goal was to return to the original dimensions? The larger indices and second track totally changes the dial proportions for the worse but reflects Rolex’s new design philosophy with modernized & bolder dials. I’m on the waitlist, Yeah right, but so far these are still very hard to pickup from the ADs. The secondary price was initially out of control but has since peaked and is setting back downwards. The initial surge has passed so you can now pick these up for much lower prices. I agree the previous model 14270 and 114270 are more aesthetically correct but not having lumed arabics and old style bracelet, not to mention the upgraded movement in the new watch. Still on the fence. I can pick up an older model for 40% less. Will probably sell my 39mm MK II. 7” wrist so right on the border. Both the 39 and 36mm work for me. A 37 x 44mm case size would have been perfect

    Good morning FT! Thank you for another well made review. Let me share with you my personal "so far experiance" with the new Explorer. I picked up mine last week. And my initial thoughts were... uhhh... that is a small watch. Especially when you're used to wear bigger Seikos like the MM300 or the SLA033. I'm now wearing it for one week without changing to other watches, and I'm still not a 100% convinced in terms of the size. The strange thing is, I don't have that feeling with a DJ 36mm. 4-5 years ago I had the 39mm version, that on the other hand appeared too big for me right from the beginning. But no doubt... it is a beautiful and perfectly built watch and I will definitely give the watch and myself more time to get along with each other ;) Btw... I only waited exactly three weeks for the watch to come (official AD). Don't know if it was just pure luck or is it finally a Rolex model you can get before you retire. Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas and take care!!!

    I love my 124270. Rolex put so much thought into the design of this model. Wears fantastic, truly the most discreet of the Rolex sport models. The 19 to 14 taper is very cool a bit vintage and everything allows the watch disappear on the wrist if you need to wear under a cuff. The enhancement to the dial give the watch so much more pop over the previous 36 model. It’s not a watch everyone will appreciate, but those that can will own a very special piece.

    I actually got to try this on about a week ago. I went in to look at Oris and my buddy there said they had one of these in the back ( taken obviously ). So my impression was that yeah it did look a bit small. Your take on the hash marks is spot on, though I hadn’t thought of it. The dial just looked scrunched. I was wearing my 214270 so to be able to compare them was great. I think I prefer the matte dial to this glossy one, but I’ll admit if both of them had been on offer when I got mine, I’d go for this one. But I’m also quite happy with what I have. So : 🤷🏻‍♂️ Great to see it on the channel. Looks perfect on your wrist as it did mine. But you know. We just don’t have all the choices we’d like to have, eh?

Unless it's extremely noticeable - I'm not so much worried about the portions of the watch's design and if it's doing a better or worse job than previous iterations. That said, simply - If I had smaller wrists I would have bought the 36mm vs., the 39.

I really liked the old 39 (tried a pre-owned on). I love the 38mm Alpinists when I've tried them on, and love my 39.5mm Alpinist. It's too bad Rolex cannot offer this in multiple sizes. I've seen some posts from owners with 7.5" and this new version and while I would not say that to them, I do feel the watch actually looked too small. All hail King GADA. Yes, by the standards of the last 15 years, it's a smaller, more refined watch. But that's the point. The mountaineers' watch tradition (as per Alpinist too) is of a smart, almost formal gentleman's 'one watch' (imagine!). It should do unobtrusive, double duty on the grouse moor, the boardroom and the Alp. The 39mm wore too big for this, and (like many Rolex of the last 10 years) had ill-conceived proportions. I'm glad the 36 is back, but for some it may be at odds with casual personal style (there's always the E2). But diversity is important, right? On a practical note, the size fits under gloves/jacket, doesn't snag etc - important stuff. But for sure, the size takes a bit of getting used to. Coming straight from a Speedy, Sub or Marinemaster, it's gonna feel small, but it's not TOO SMALL, just SMALLER!
    Also, while the taper is to 14mm, the clasp is 16mm, which is quite big (bigger than a current Speedy). That gives a fair bit of balance. But, I'm interested in your '36mm'. I (and many others) can't measure more than 35mm!
    As for the SARB Alpi - dude, what a watch! I'm running mine on an Uncle Seiko Jubilee and I'm blown away by it - they look so good on a bracelet!

    I was offered the 39mm version about 10 years ago while at the AD during my lunch hour while working on a holiday. I passed because I just got an Explorer 2 about 5 months earlier while traveling. To this day, I regretted it!
    At this point, I probably put myself in line just to get this new version. Even though I do feel the older one looks better. ☹️

      2 very different watches. One is a simple 3hander sports watch and the other is a complicated chronograph that's much larger in size. Just get a Tudor black Bay 36 until you can get an explorer.

    It is a small, not particularly exciting Rolex. Every time I see it on wrists, too much bracelet vs watch face I.e like a women's watch. For an everyday all rounder it should have a glidelock too.
    Just can't get into this one.

  • @m.e.p.r

    Rolex added 0.5mm to the thickness of the lugs themselves, to give them more heft. Hence the 19mm bracelet. It wears bigger than the previous design....I have both. Ignore the review entirely 😂

    Nah, 20mm bracelet on the 36mm Explorer looks like an after thought. It looks like they just grabbed a Submariner bracelet and tossed it on this smaller watch. The 19mm bracelet looks far more balanced and refined for this watch.
    Been enjoying my 124270 so far, wears far better than my OP36, despite having similar specs.
    By the way, this watch was never $7k CAD… after tax in Ontario it was $8.5k in December when I bought it. It’s now around $9.5k after the Jan 1 price increase.

    • @EscapementWatch
      @EscapementWatch  Před 2 lety

      Disagree. Milling out the explorer 36mm case to exactly 20mm lug opening is not an after thought. It is planned and deliberate. Also, we never include tax's in our prices as every state/province has their own %.

    So you're on the wait list just to make a profit, even if you don't really like the watch and don't intend to wear it?
    It's people with that mentality that are driving prices up and make watches unobtainable to others who truly appreciate them.
    If you want to buy a watch you should want to wear it, al least on some occasions. Otherwise you're not a watch enthusiast. Not in my book at least.

    Missed the mark big time. You say it’s more refined but I disagree. The larger markers look goofy and the thicker lugs make the watch lose its elegance. Not to say that the modern Rolex clasps, although solid, are too chunky.
