    2003 Tahoe Z71 here, purchased new, over 300,000 miles and periodic wonky electronics, like low power mode and the ABS and Traction Control lights and weird DTC codes; also electric lock and window problems. I feel your pain, but I have learned the hard way about Chevys and bad grounds from another Chevy I own, and keep an extra braided ground strap on hand at all times, and use my digital voltmeters to check my circuits.
    The best thing I have learned is to buy no new parts until I check battery voltage and battery ground from negative battery post to engine block then negative post to chassis/frame if it's a no crank/no start. A bad battery connector can always keep it from starting or recharging correctly, so check the connection or voltage drop between the negative battery post and the wire leaving the negative connector or to the attachment point of the negative cable to the frame and/or engine block. For starts resulting low power mode, traction control and/or ABS lights, unplug the accelerator pedal position sensor connector, then spray both male and female parts of the connection with De-Oxit D5 or some similar electronic contact cleaner, even just 99% rubbing alcohol in a small pump sprayer, and plug the connector back in. If that doesn't work, do the same to the throttle body connector, and visually check and spray the connectors to the fuel pump control module and/or pump and/or pump relay. Check and spray any electrical connector exposed to vibration, flexing or weather or that has to work perfectly for the vehicle to function. For lasting connector protection from corrosion, use silicone di-electric grease. If you had gotten an inexpensive scan tool ($30), or a blue tooth type scanner that uses a phone app to give you the diagnostic news ($80 to $100), you would have saved big bucks and a couple of day's lost time in this situation. Scotty Kilmer has current recommendations for these on his channel. Also, ask your insurance agent about the cost of roadside assistance/towing on your policy - could be about as little as 10 to $20 a year per vehicle, which is what I pay. If your policy already has it, or if you are a member of an auto club, you might be able to get reimbursed for all or part of the towing bill.

I ended up ordering an ECM tonight and then ran across your video so I ran outside and sure enough the same ground wire was broken. I fixed it in the damn thing fired right up. Needless to say I’m trying to cancel my order now😂

    Bro thank you for this video, today my wife calls me said the car just shut off while she was driving. So I'm at work I'm a heavy equipment mechanic, an I run a service truck, so I pack up haul but over to her cause it's a 100 degree out here in Texas, an she got my kiddos with her. So I pull up start checking fuses an battery normal diagnosis stuff, load tested batter an it was bad went an swapped out battery, still no start. Finally I called my roadside assistance, so I could just tow the car to the house to get them out of the heat, an work on it there. So as I'm waiting on tow truck to arrive , I start scrolling through no start issue on CZcams for suburban, an bam land on your vid. Get back out of the truck to look at the suburban, an same thing wire broken off at the back, so I hook my my test leads back to ground right quick, an she fires right up!!! Right as the tow truck is pulling up, so I called off the tow an saved$ 135, just put a new terminal end on the ground wire an hooked it back up, no problems out of it so far. All praise be to God, for me finding this video , an you making it.

    Thank you for putting this video out. I have a 05 Tahoe with the same problem. I cut the wire you showed (mine was not broke), and grounded it like you showed. Mine would not even turn over. It runs now and hopefully this will solve my problem. I bought it in may 2019 and I have driven it a total of 3 months because of this and reduced engine power. It has sit since October because I couldn’t afford to fix it because of me having surgery. Now it runs so thank you again.

    A tip from someone that used to work in auto parts (me) dont trust them when the tester says the battery is bad. A lot of times when the battery is all the dead the tester will say "replace battery." Instead of buying a battery tell them you want the battery charged. You will need an overnight slow charge to get it back right. They have a quick 1 hr charge but sometimes the tester will say replace battery after those also.

    FIRST THING. Pep Boys policy, if you can't figure it out and give the customer a definite answer as to what the problem is the customer does not get charged. They owe you a full refund. Just call 1-800 or 1-888-pep-boys. Trust me it works. I'm a retired master tech and have repaired that issue countless times. Good catch brother. Make sure you have a wire going from firewall to back of cylinder head. Very important.

    I checked that wire, it was firm but I cut it anyways. I found an inch long break exposing the wire so I soldered a new wire, used heat shrink to cover 6 inches of it, grounded to the forewall, cleaned the grounds under the driver door to frame. Cleared the codes and so far so good. I just wanted to say thanks because the manual doesn't say real world things and I work long hours and don't have time to keep throwing parts and chasing a unicorn problem. Thanks.

    Use the big 3 method from car audio!! Put a ground grom battery to body, battery to engine mount, and if possible battery and engine to frame! Make sure to clean connect area to clean bare metal! You should also add a bigger wire to battery to alternator for better charging, be sure to run through the current sensing ring of electric system!! I had to do this on my chevy power wire to make electric system to function correctly!! I had to splice a second ring sensor to original for running extra zero guage for audio power! It solved my problem of shutting off ac after a few minutes and other charging issues!! Good luck

    Yes,I"m an electrician by trade & sometimes the problem is very simple if you have a multimeter to.test the voltage with,on my Chevrolet LS1 V8 engine in my car,when I was replacing the hydraulic lifters in 2018 & I refitted the cylinder heads I missed fitting a couple of earth leads connections onto the back of the left hand cylinder head & a "contact dealer" message came up on the instrument.panel which usually means PCM failure.
    On the left hand side of the car there's a positive power supply for the ignition coils integrated in with the air conditioning pressure switch wiring loom so that needed to be connected before the engine would even start as that wasn't connected either & the engine wouldn't start !

    Mitch and Son in Law Will Drake. 2004 chevy 3500 dually.
    Just replaced both knock sensors underneath the intake plenum. Had to remove the plenum and to do so we unhooked all 8 plugs to injectors and had to tie the harness on the passenger side up and back towards corner of firewall and fender. Made removing the plenum very easy. Got knock sensors changed and plenum back on. hooked up all injectors and other plugs etc. Got in and turned key on and all dash lights went crazy. Right away I new something wasn't right in Denmark. Turned key to start position and lights went out then back on and went all funky but no crank . Turned key off but all lights stayed on. removed key and different lights blinked on and off then stayed on with key out. Had to remove battery cable to shut dash down.. My son in law started googling and found your video. He checked and sure enough that wire was broke and hanging behind firewall. While pulling on harness and tying it back we had broke the wire where it was grounded to firewall. reconnected the wire to ground exactly where you did and the damned truck started on first crank. You are a God send and thank you so much. Hope your video helps many others also.

    This video is a perfect example of why we, as diagnostic techs are in business. It has nothing to do with it being a Chevy. leading edge of drivers door follow it straight down under vehicle to frame of the vehicle its alongside your throttle cable remove ground clean all surfaces well (sandpaper ,scotchbrite or a good wire brush) replace ground to original position and your good , this ground can cause the reduced engine power fault

They said it was the ground wire, but that they had to take all these assorted parts off the vehicle to access it. Charged me $400 something. I personally think its a set up - scam by Chevrolet. It happens to a lot of vehicles. Should be classified as a defective part issue and there should be no charge for the fix.

    The ground point back there is a major issue,, that ground has a few different wires on it. Within a year your truck is not going to start again but this time another wire is going to break free from that ground point. That ground is for the ECM and a easy fix is to take one screw out of the engine computer and put a wire on the screw and run it to battery ground. 👌

  • @Joesworldttv
    @Joesworldttv Před 4 lety +2

    I would recommend using a thicker gauge ground wire when hooking up to your existing ground wire. Two ways you can connect it. You can use "Scotch Lock" connectors, these take the hassle out of soldering. Then use shrink tube followed by a plastic wire guard. Or you can just solder the existing wire with shrink tube. I preferre scotch locks.

    OK happened to my son making pickup at airport 2 hours away....Somehow got jump and got things going again....watched several videos (2004 Crew Cab Chevy 5.3) and pulled on the wire seemed tight....next morning transmission indicator leds were flashing, Jumped, and has run with all gages working again for several short trips around town...Perhaps just got enough corrosion lose to get it to ground again.....our wire was Black with white stripe.

    Buddies dodge ram had a similar problem.
    Dealer accused him of modifications (none). After 4 months of back/forth, they FLEW in their Master Tech,
    Fixed after a hour. Samething i was taught.
    Always check your grounds first.

    Seems like that geneeration, '99-'06, Chevy/GM's with those Vortec engines, have an issue with grounds failing. I recall some dude has great vids on that specific problem and how to remedy it. Big Three, etc., etc., etc., but more importantly, how to correct that lurking issue.

    The grd wire looks like at #10 so a similar would be well devised. Better to over size then under. Depending on your area , any grds which I do/ redo I use Kopper Kote it lasts longer the the other has more oil to keep that area from rusting sooooner. Don't like doing jobs twice.

    question. the problem i have is my tahoe wont crank or turn over. i tried everything i could think of and replaced alot of parts. could that ground wire in the video be my problem? i checked it out its not broken i tugged on it but should i try to cut it and re ground it?

    • @mrnonchalant1183
      @mrnonchalant1183  Před rokem

      It may not be broken but there may be a bad ground somewhere. I’m not a certified tech but I would recommend taking it to one.

    Did they tow your truck on a flatbed truck? because rolling the trucks wheels, front or back, will burn up your 2nd or third gear depending on the average speed the tow truck.
