Youโre my favorite CZcams vlogger of all time Dan! Been a subscriber for years. Another great list! You are never predictable....Iโm glad you update as things change. Queretaro just moved up my list to 1or 2, and I never even knew about it.
Thanks again...Iโm leaving in August-September and you are really helping me get ready!

I retired last year at 57, currently living in Honolulu when I moved here from Texas.โฆ still trying to find a cheaper destination I can settle down as a base, and go sailing/cruising whenever I can. Your comment has made me think twice about considering Mexico. Once my SS kicks in at 62.5, I hope to have my own feet on the grounds on my short list by then to relocate again. Thank you for your input! I hope to learn & glean from folks like you, on here.
Itโs great that you review such a wide variety of environments. People really need to consider whether they like the energy of a city, medium town or small village. (Over time Iโve learned I like medium towns with a lot of food and culture options.) Iโm overwhelmed in big cities and eventually bored in villages. If you arenโt introspective about this you canโt make a good choice. A lot of people seem to focus only on climate when deciding where to retire. You really cover the essential aspects of quality of life, which is of course different for everyone.
Hello Lisa D, thank you for your personal note of encouragement. You are so right too. People do better in different environments. It really does make a difference for us when we know people appreciate what we are doing. Your comments also cause CZcams to show our video to more people so your note is like paying us a small tip $$ for our time. Thank you, Dan
There is a lot to be said about medium sized towns. I've been in Guanajuato Mexico this year and it has been magical. I do wonder if it wouldn't feel small eventually.
Id like to thank you for the content ...beautifully edited with high quality photos. The Mexican ones were especially appreciated.
Thank you very much!
Thankyou for that great report. Half of the places I have never heard of which shows that the world is full of amazing places that are off the "popular" tourist routes.
You are welcome Malcolm. Thanks, Dan

I lived in Querรฉtaro for six years, teaching English privately there, and it is indeed a great city. But when I took early retirement at age 62 in 2020, largely because of the COVID economic disruption, I tried to find a livable long-term housing situation and failed to do so. (The apartment in Centro where I had been living was somewhat sub-standard, although conveniently located for my teaching work.) So I expanded my search to other cities in Central Mexico and found a beautiful 1200 sf, three-bedroom house in Tlaxcala City for LESS than I paid for a tiny, antiquated one-bedroom apartment in Querรฉtaro. Tlaxcala City is also significantly cheaper than Querรฉtaro across the board of other expenses. I already had Residente Permanente status because of my decade working here, and thus did not have to meet any income or net worth requirements to remain in Mexico. My monthly Social Security benefit is about 20% less than the baseline amount for a single person mentioned in the video.

Thanks, Mark. I'm about the same age and have the same problem - forced early retirement. I appreciate your cost comparison. I've been to Costa Rica but it's not cheap.
You have an excellent eye for travel photography. Amazing shots that make these places so attractive.
Thanks a lot!
wow! such a comprehensive list of countries that are relevant to 2021, thank you so much Dan :-)
Glad you think so Lead Learner!
Hi Dan,
Thanks for the video !
We hope to eventually visit many countries but will start in 3 years in Mexico, until our older dogs pass away. Both of us grew up on HOT beaches and are now cool weather lovers so we may visit hot places but will eventually settle some place like Queretaro , Guanajuato , Oaxaca, Puebla or Morelia....or even San Cristobal de las casas. We really had never considered Mexico until watching your videos.
Kind of surprised about Bali... I picture it full and almost over run by young tourists. I guess weโll have to check it out. Thx !
Very cool. Maybe we will have a cold one together someday Banana? Dan

Weโd love that !
great range and summary of orsm places dude. been watching these types of vids ad nauseum and gotta say this is maybe the best because you are showing lots of cool diverse not so hammered destinations. Thanks Vagabond.
Much appreciated! Yes, I pretty much ignore what everyone else says. I just focus on the ones I enjoy. :-)
Thanks for sharing. I'm planning on this too. This will be a good starting point for my research. I agree with your point about Vietnam
Glad it was helpful!
Wow! This is a remarkable travelogue. I never paid much attention to this channel until this video. We live in the Philippines and we agree that Dumaguete is a beautiful city. My family and I live in Imus, Cavite, Philippines. I am a fan of your channel now. and I will be following Vagabond Awake.

Thank you greg sprott! Thanks for watching and commenting. :-) Dan
Well done . We have had our eyes on PM, MX....it is exciting to see it on your list. Your photography is spectacular.
Awesome! Thank you!
Very helpful. I have been to many of the places you mentioned in Mexico, and very interested in parts of South America also. Weather is a major concern as I do not do well in cold. I also need good medical care & dental care, open markets to get organic produce and being outside. Not a city person at all. I loved Oaxaca when I was there, but it was not a place to be outside as much. Of course, I spend my time there in the Oaxaca City so will need to look into other parts near there. Really like the beach. Thanks for this. I'll stay in touch.

John, That's the plan! I have been delaying for the last few weeks once I saw everything start opening. Won't be much longer though! Thanks fro the encouragement! Dan
This is a topic that I have been interested in for this past year. Nice.
Thank you J Franchi! Thanks for watching and commenting. :-) Dan
Thanks for the list. A lot of useful information and I love your comments starting at 1:21 regarding feet on the ground. By contrast some other channels just show shots from the tourism board and a little info from Wikipedia. I've been to about half of the places you mentioned. I'd love to know approximate prices to reside in each place before investing in more detailed information. Maybe starting with a pleasant 1-bedroom apartment and no vehicle - a little estimate for overall cost for each location would be great. I plan to return to Bali when it reopens. It's been closed for a year because of the global lockdowns. That's probably my retirement choice. Harlingen or Brownsville, TX cost about $1600 a month including all expenses (no car payments), with cell phone and internet payments. Most places in Florida will be $400 - $1,000 a month higher. Miami, not even slightly possible.
Our reports all cover these minimum cost of living in each place. You can also watch our CZcams country playlists. Those quote prices for each place. Here are those two resources, below:
vagabondbuddha.com/
czcams.com/users/VagabondAwakeplaylists
Hi Dan ,thanks for the video beautiful and interesting places to visit or indeed retire in , you take amazing pics , your photography is tops .
Many thanks!
Really fantastic video. I appreciate the extra info on Vietnam
Glad it was helpful!
Nice video! I've been to all these places and hard to argue with any of them-except the order. Siquor Philippines is nice as well.
Totally agree! That is why I think an exploratory visit to your tope favorites should be done before a final decision on where to retre cheap. What would your top order be Christian? Best, Dan
@@VagabondAwake Wow! Tough one. I'd go with Oaxaca, Medellin, Penang. Melakka is nice too.
Woow, Titanic compilation of experiences! Thanks for sharing your insights, I pray God to have the opportunity to explore some of these places
I hope so too!

Good selection! I visited almost all places over the years while travelling. The only place I have not been would be my choice: Caminguin. A nice, small islands and natural place being away from it all. I agree with your assessment on Thailand and with the closure of most of SE Asia because of Covid 19, the shift to Latin America. But one piece of advice: do explore Southern Europe more. Spain, Crostia, Greece etc do offer a lot at reasonable costs only slightly more than Thailand now with much less paperwork.
Hey Nils Den Tex, thanks for the great question. I have traveled to all of your suggested places and agree they are lovely. I will cover them as I visit them again in the next few years. Those and all of Eastern Europe are great choices too. Thanks for commenting. CZcams shows our videos to more people when they get more comments. So your comment is like you are giving us a pay raise. So, thank you! Dan
Nowhere near retirement but thoroughly enjoyed your video. I am Mexican, had never heard of Puerto Morelos, thanks for the tip!

Iโm now retired in Cuenca and love it. The city center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and itโs very walkable.
Well said. I love that place too. It should be on the list in top 5. Thanks for pointing out my mistake.
That is great. Thanks! I know it is kind of nuts but I still want to live in Iquitos, Peru, the big city in the middle of the Amazon jungle. Love your vids.
Go for it!
I still want to live in Phuket Thailand, that might sound nuts to some people. You have to chase your dreams, what does it work for other people could be the best thing that you ever done in your life. God bless

Wow! I have never seen a more detailed exposition of where to live. My wife is from the Philippines and I love it there, but Belize and Panama are also strongly appealing for us. Bohol is our top pick right now, but I've often thought about Dumaguete. Mexico and the Philippines has so much in common and I enjoy the similarities.
Beware of all the e-beggars on Bohol
Our pleasure!
Many people fall for sob stories from people they meet online in various parts of the world and they send money to them over the Internet via Paypal, Western Union, or whatever. 90% of that is just scammers on 'dating sites' that men hope to visit soon when they are in the Philippines. Don't fall for it. Thanks for sharing SouthBound1969! My tip is to not bother dating until you get here and can look her in the eyes. Best, Dan
@@VagabondAwake Hi, I was referring more to the CZcams e-beggers that are common on Bohol.
@ Will Douglas I live in Cebu. Are you planning on coming back here to live with your wife? I honestly feel that Philippines is one of the safest places to live. Unfortunately you can't get in right now but hopefully that will change soon. I don't see any similarities between Mexico and the Philippines. How much time have you spent living here?
Thanks for the list. Very interesting. Bali, Puerto Morelos, Camiguin island, Ph., Querataro, and KL would be my favorites. I know you left off Thailand but would definitely take a serious look at Krabi, Surat Thani, and Phang Nga Bay provinces once they ease the visa restrictions. Went to these places in 2019 and absolutely loved this part of Thailand.
Good choice!
Dan- would you comment on East Malaysia like Sarawak, and Sabah?
Great work as usual Dan. You guys have been a fantastic source of inspiration for me as I needed to come back to the USA to finish up a 2 year contract starting in 2020 from Singapore - before I move back again to Asia to retire next Summer in '22. So thanks for the research and thanks for the great tips! Im looking at a rotation between the Highlands near KL and Bali. Time will tell. :)

I totally agree!
I just found your channel, and i was on pins and needles waiting to see if places in the Philippines made your list. I was pleasantly surprised to see Dumaguete made it so high up on your list. Having retired to Bali, Indonesia from the US way back in 1998, I was pleased to see it it is number 1 on your list of 15 other wonderful places in the world. My only advice to anyone seriously considering Bali as their retirement home is to give it a try out first, and in that try out, move around a bit as there is great diversity...pros and cons with each of the most popular regions of this paradise.

Now I have a question about Bali. Bali has been on my retirement list since I started researching for retirement. Many bloggers have shown the beaches and the trash build-up have gotten worse. Has that been addressed?
Love the channel and look forward to more videos.
Puerto Morelos was better in the late 0,s and 80,s .Now its pricey . Had a condo in Cancun from the80,s till 2003 . Doubled my invested when i sold due to cancer . Now i go to the state of Oaxaca where i plan to live .Im 80 yrs old now having survived 16 yrs of no cancer .
@Steve g ~ Sounds like you are doing great ! Best wishes ๐
Great story Steve g. Thank you for sharing it with us. Your interaction with our channel helps us get subscribers and views, so we really appreciate it. Best, Dan

I do think that as the world changes, its a good idea to be "flexible"... Being able and willing to move about and explore just might be the way to go. :)
I couldn't agree more RichE. That is why I am a slow traveler. I go where I have the most fun ad get the best bang for my buck. I am retired now. Why d I want to park my arse in one place. The world is my oyster. Thanks for commenting. CZcams grows our channel faster when people comment! So we really appreciate it! Best, Dan
The world is always changing, and I agree with your use of word flexible, cuz it's key to basically...everything in life cept for a few non negotiables which would be personal to an individual typically. I enjoy watching vids like this cuz I choose not to travel in a time in my life when I could cuz kids are grown go figure. I'm only 28 + 2 decades yrs old & I've become fascinated with 'travel' thru phone ๐คฆโโ๏ธ. So thank u for making these vids!

Great video, Dan! Keep it up!

Great info. Didn't see #1 coming.
Glad it was helpful!
Just moved to Valencia. Surprised to see it #3. Just getting settled๐

Nice part of the world
How is the internet there? I almost went a few years ago to stay, but decided not to since internet seemed iffy.
@@seans6412 definitely no expert. We live in a little complex that A German guy built... Iโm very spoiled here. Everything other then Monthly Sunday brownouts (no electricity from 6am to 6pm
Any chance you guys can do a review of eastern European countries close to the Adriatic Sea (e.g. Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia & Herz., Croatia, Slovenia)?
I couldn't agree more bee hive. They are on our Q for a visit. I was last in that part of the world before I started this business. Loved it.

Glad you enjoyed it
So great to watch your videoโs. Thanks for sharing!
You are so welcome!
Amazing video bud! Grest detail and reccomend actions. I'm getting ready to (sort of) retire at 35. Great to see so many options! Shame to hear about Thailand and Vietnam, hopefully they'll come around. I'm leaving England because of developing nationalism so I wouldn't want to end up in one that's far worse :/
Best of luck!
I am 36 and looking at the same thing, what countries are on your shortlist Tom?
@@rh_8599 well I love travelling So I'm thinking of moving very slowly around a few for a while and taking it from there. I've got a few in mind though: Indonesia and tbeblhillipines are pretty high up the list. I'll still try Thailand and Vietnam I think but maybe more for an extended visit rather than a move. Aside from that, I'm also interest in Portugal since its closer to "home". What about you?
For me, Arequipa was ok for work or short term visits, but wouldn't make my list of places to retire.
Thank you to you and Qiang for making these fun and informative videos!
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for all your hard work, and for all your valuable information. Robert
You are very welcome
Very nice, loved every minute thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it
Love, love, love all your photos from all over. โคโค Great tips are always.
Sadly Porto is no longer affordable in our list ... 2021 They introduced a new 10% tax on expats earnings, and capital gains, I think it's because of the amount of expats there, and more that will be moving there.
In Asia, we're looking at Cambodia, Malaysia will remain a somewhat home base, and maybe, a big maybe, Chile, and Eastern Europe. Albania, Serbia, Georgia, & maybe 1 other. Mexico/south America is lovely, but a bit far from Asia, & too close for comfort, if you know what I mean. Lets hope the whole covid drama will be over soon in so many of us can travel again.
It's also very sad to learn the Asian hate crime has escalated in US.
Take care, be safe, stay happy xx
That is one of the reasons I like slow traveling the world. As long as you are a tourist, you are less likely to end up on any taxing authorities' radar. But for some people, if they are getting hammered on taxes in their home country, they should speak to an international tax account. They may be better off establishing an LLC in a tax haven. A subject well beyond the teachings of my channel.
How do you make a base in Malaysia? They're raising the MM2H residence required income to $10000 a month.
@@hufficag Literally can't. Many have or leaving. They were supposed to revise the whole MM2H but sadly no.
it's not just Asian hate crime that has escalated, crime in the US is out of control. I'm 3 years out from retirement, I think I'm still going to the Philippines though.
@@michaelsears5016 Good for you. All the best.
great vid--as always. I'm 65 on SSI and still work remotely. Hows the internet situation? I need dead reliable internet. I think I'd prefer something caribbean? Merida? What would a realistic rent look like in the Merida area? thanks. Keep up the great work.
Hi Chris,
Mexico has the availability of strong internet but it depends on what the property owner pays for. I have them run an ATT Test (www.att.com/support/speedtest/) before I rent a place. Yes, we have videos on Merida.

Think about Cuernavaca, Mexico. Beautiful place. Great ex-pat community. Affordable. And decent internet. I survived there on SSI and had a very large, luxurious, 1-bedroom apartment.
Fantastic! New subscriber. Thank you!
Welcome aboard!
This was fascinating. Would you consider mentioning the climate in these videos? You appear to be much more comfortable with brutal heat than I am. Puerto Morelos, for example, is beautiful, but the temperature routinely goes over 32 ยฐC (90 ยฐF), and often exceeds 38 ยฐC (100 ยฐF) -- and the world is just going to keep getting warmer. I want to retire where the temperature *never* reaches 32 ยฐC (90 ยฐF), and preferably stays under 27 ยฐC (80 ยฐF).
Here is a better list for you: vagabondbuddha.com/top-highlands-for-cheap-living/
I like the fact that Thailand is screening their visa's more , there needs to be a check and balance system for the foreign criminal element that have been going to Thailand .
US is the exact opposite now.
Hello bubby boxer! Thank you for taking the time to share. Hasn't Thailand been doing criminal background checks for years already on new retiree applicants? They don't do it on 30 day tourists visas. Our CZcams channel grows when people like, comment, or subscribe. It is like you are giving us a pay raise every time! So we really appreciate your help! Best, Dan
I've been in Thailand many times and yes there is a pretty sleazy element that was going there in addition to regular Tourists. Too bad the United States doesn't start doing that now. we're letting all kinds of criminals and everybody else in the country without any vetting. that's one of the reasons I'm getting out of this country. things are going to be very dangerous over here shortly.
I love watching your videos, I am 55 years young and I am retired. Iโve always wanted to go to Thailand and maybe even live there. All my children are grown the youngest is 22. You my friend live a blessed life, Iโd love to know what it would cost to live in these different countries monthly. Thank you again for a great video God bless you and your better half๐
You can find tons of info on the cost of living in these countries. And try it for a bit. Think of it as a long vacation for your first time. If you like it then you can plan on doing it permanently.
@@joemarine2 Thank you and God bless
@@tommyraccioppi7100 no problem. I was blessed with a job that took me to some pretty cool places and I would usually be there for months. But seriously if you have the time and the bank account is healthy enough pick a place and buy a plane ticket. Usually it's not hard to find an AirBnB or a cheap enough hotel. When traveling for vacation like this I will get a hotel the first few days and then pick a different city in the country and make my way there. After a couple of months you have seen the country and have had a great time. If you spend a few months in a country you will know if extended travel is for you. Good luck
@@joemarine2 Thank you so much for your information I truly appreciate it, I definitely have the means. And everything seems like itโs going to open up soon so just have to figure out where I want to go first. God bless my brother

Greetings from the USA! First-time subscriber, and I enjoy this video since I'm about to retire, and very informative. I'm happy that you picked the Philippines twice, which is my birth country. My husband is already retired, and unfortunately, we decided not to move back to Southern California, where I grew up from the Washington, DC area. My husband is an American, is very cautious about other countries. However, we took him to the Philippines back in 2013, and he enjoyed and loved itโฃ๏ธWeโre thinking of going back to the Philippines to spend more time and genuinely enjoy what my birth country has to offer.
