These sound very tempting BUT - 21 years ago I made the move to Hungary. Turns out today it is the safest most beautiful and least expensive place to live. It is in the heart of Europe if you want to get in your car and travel - go to the countryside to buy from farmers - fruits, vegetables, raw milk and milk products and even meat. I had no choice - when I figured my style of living on my $1000 retirement budget - it would have been a sad fact anywhere. Cashed in my 401K and even with the penalty for early withdrawal - it bought me a 1000 sq ft downtown apartment with high ceilings and lots of windows. By now, I've become a dual citizen which means free domestic travel and medical insurance for under $40/month ALL INCLUSIVE. Can't tell you how relieved I am not having to worry about ending up on the streets for my old age. Now there is also a country house and a vineyard. Was a realtor in NC so if you have questions - please feel free to ask. I'm retired and would love to help anyone else who wants to enjoy their golden years.

I live pretty well on 3k a month in NC. Own home, motor home, motorcycle, car. Never buy new. I have lived in over a dozen countries and visited over 50.
I was just in Panama a couple of months ago. When they say “live comfortable on 2k a month” you have to understand that it is not going to be just like the US. The standards are different. But it goes back to that old adage, “everything is a trade off”. So you will loose some things and gain others. It won’t be the same as the US, But you will find wonderful things that you didn’t even know that you were missing. Like LOW crime, especially violent crime, really good caring people. Wonder FRESH HEALTHY food. Not the processed crap that we eat. To keep costs down and have a richer experience, make all efforts to speak the language. Unlike America, the locals will bend over backwards to help you. And if you don’t live in an exclusive expat type community, it really will be much less expensive and as I say richer experience. If you expect to live “just like the US” it may not work. Be flexible, open minded and respectful and you will be rewarded.

Spain is excellent in many ways and cheaper than most European countries, but they still have a developed country mentality, so freedom seems a bit compromised; it's nice to be free and have the economic freedom of living in an affordable country. Affordable countries can include the Philippines, Mexico, Ecuador, Panama and several other choices. Spain has nice beaches, but I actually like beaches in Brazil and Mexico better for the view and the quality, too. Spain has amazing castles and lots of history, too, so it's nice to travel around and see things, too.

Forget Thailand. Living there long term as a retiree is turning into a nightmare. Almost on a weekly basis the government is coming up with harsher regulations and penalties against foreigners. Every 90 days you have to report to an immigration office, if you spend 24 hours away from your registered address you must make notifications or face fines. You are constantly overcharged by the locals. Any dispute or disagreement of any nature and you are deemed in the wrong, and you must back down and let them have it their way, or risk being beaten and hospitalized.

For some the definition of the word "home" is ambiguous. There are those who have primary residences (like me) in some place like Arizona, but they also maintain secondary residences (like me) in some other location. The idea is once they choose to retire, the "ditch" their primary residence, and go to the secondary residence permanently, provided that is still their plan. My primary residence is Arizona (same for me wife). Our plan is to "ditch" Arizona once we retire, and move to Vietnam, where we maintain a place there...unless something precludes it.

You can consider southern India, because cost of living is very less ( 500 to 800 dollars for a couple ) , very good health facilities ( Chennai is the best)
In tire 2&3 cities very very low crime rate.
Unlike Europe or USA you get fresh meat at a fraction of cost, milk is cheap and you get freh fruits year around again at much cheaper cost

Philippines???? Are you NUT? With Psychopath duterte leading the killings with his EJK and fake drug war that stands at 36,000+ ... The political and economic climate here are not conducive for foreign travelers and investors. It's practically a death wish to foreign investors brave enough. One does not need to be too smart to figure that out. Psycopath LIAR duterte urges his police(PNP), his military(AFP) and his vigilantes (Duterte Death Squad-DDS) to kill at their pleasure. The death toll right now stands at 36,897(and counting) in his fake war on drugs and EJKs. Remember the german tourist, who was kidnapped, ransomed for 2 million dollars and released. Then, was stupid enough to come back and got kidnapped again and this time no more ransom paid and lost his head, literally by PNP. Another one, a Korean businessman named, Jee Ick Joo was kidnapped by the PNP police and after the wife paid the ransom, the PNP chief IGNATIUS FERRO, Head of PNP Anti-Drug, hack him to pieces in their main police HQ and feed parts of the body pieces to their dogs, cremated the remaining parts and flushed down the toilet. (No witnesses, they PNP said). But some of you are idiots anyway, my advice, takes an insurance policy, at least 3-4 MILLION DOLLARs, in the event you get taken as a hostage, in that way, you're leaving your loved ones financially taken care of. And for your protection against the police (PNP) bring a body armor with you, the likelihood of being shot or killed by Duterte Death Squad(DDS)vigilantes or PNP police are extremely very high and these are for extortion purposes only. They do not hesitate to kill and mutilate you. If you are that stupid enough to get caught up with it, in between, then you are really fucked in a very dire strait fuck-up situation !!! Stay safe by staying in your room, lock the door and do not be stupid to go out after dark. OH...and by the way his DDS vigilantes are on this kidnap for ransom scam, too. The good part they take the ransom, the bad part they will kill and chop you to pieces and scatter the remains in Manila Bay for the fish to fatten up (duterte said and recommended that. It's not a joke!). Good Luck

500$ per month,at the very least if you have family and everything constantly getting more expensive, because Philippines is an emerging economy.
And for provinces of course, because Manila is a Metropolis for thick wallets.
Tell the truth to the people.
Philippines are cheap, only for high pensioners of Europe,USA,Canada,Australia etc.
English is official language and people are really friendly, that's the one and only truth that you write.
Except of course the discrimination that you will face if you have low income, because all people of the Philippines (and most of Asian countries), expect that the foreigners must be billionaires (or at least millionaires)...
      Stay in your country.
And if you are struggling little, try to slightly lower your needs instead (that your society created and increased, finally) and don't search for any lost paradise.

Especially if you are a retiree and if you are living with a chronic illness or a pre-existing health condition by that age. Healthcare in the Philippines is one of the worst & very expensive. People would rather die than spend all their hard-earned money on hospitalization & medicine. Other than that, Philippines is a nice choice for retirement.

I've been in all those countries except Portugal. It's true that most of them are very affordable but some not so much like Spain, Costa Rica and Panama. Property in Barcelona is 4,500 to 6,000 Euros per square meter, that's not cheap (it costs about US$1,000 in Medellin, Colombia). I would think the top of the ranking should be the most inexpensive and it's not. Panama, Costa Rica and Ecuador are not cheaper than Peru, Colombia, Thailand or Malaysia, basically because their prices are parallel to the dollar. Another criteria other than cost of living may have been used to rank them as they are. Also the comparison should be among cities of the same size and importance. It's not possible to compare Boquete in Panama with Bangkok in Thailand. Also agree with many comments, why the Philippines is not on the list? It's a paradise for only pennies.

Any resort areas, Madrid and Barcelona are actually on the pricey side. It’s perhaps overall less expensive than major US cities but probably more expensive than middle US. €2000 a month would be living extremely modestly in Spain. Also, be prepared to speak Spanish.

The presenter suggests that in Malaysia, "you can dine in a good, local restaurant for less than six dollars, including beer". (maybe 20 years ago) Today's reality: a large bottle of Tiger beer in a good local restaurant costs at least US$ 4.00 ! A simple plate of prawns (shrimps) without side dishes (rice, vegetables) will set you back around US$ 5.00 or more. A bottle of wine can cost US$ 100.00 and more (less in supermarkets). How do you define a "good, local restaurant"? If a good local restaurant serves beer, it can get expensive (to recover the annual cost of a liquor license). Credit cards and air conditioning also indicate large bills. I won't even go into the red tape of obtaining a social pass (government's permission for a foreigners to reside in Malaysia). As the saying goes: if it looks too good to be true, it probably isn't. Don't rely on CZcams documentaries.. Do your own research; talk to expat residents (not diplomats); come for a visit before committing yourself (not just Malaysia). Stay safe and healthy, everybody! Regards from Sabah (Malaysian Borneo)

Yes you can live with 500: If someone else pays the rent, the food, the drinks, and the parties. So the 500 are to spend on traveling the city or the region! We all can live very cheap, all we have to do is finding the way to do it!

I could be wrong but.... Both Thailand and Malaysia have set up special ‘retirement visas’ with a minimum of about $50,000 deposit. Even buying a boat would be equal to that and then just live on it.
Look into it, look up retirement visa for those countries. Malaysia are really gearing up for this with retirement villages, medical facilities, everything as they are aware that this brings in a lot of money.

    • @richardhowe5583

@7A ..I have the money but I would never meet their demands because it feels like extortion.. Thailand is not even the best country to retire in my opinion... people are going to wise up and start doing their own research.. anyway it's different strokes for different folks!!

    • @deangiliard3238
      @deangiliard3238 Před 5 lety +3

@otto x that is true but in order to get a retirement visa or renew a retirement visa they most prove they have a monthly income from abroad of 65,000 baht or have 800,000 baht in a Thai bank account for 2 months before and 3 months after obtaining the vise or extension. the other 7 months the funds in a Thai bank should not go lower that 400,000 baht. Plus they must have health insurance that covers them in Thailand.
