Stone R&R Coconut IPA - Beer Review

  • When I heard about this beer I was excited for 2 reasons. First, I was intrigued by the idea of a Coconut IPA. I thought there was a lot of flavor potential and it was a mix that I had never stumbled upon. Second, it was brewed by a beertuber on - Ryan Reschan - who is known as StumpyJoeJr on CZcams. He won a homebrew contest with Stone Brewing Company in Escondido, California and they brewed it on a large scale and distributed across the country. That has to be the ultimate prize for a homebrewer. I tracked down a bottle and shot a solo review, which is not normal for this channel. Tune in and find out whether I thought this beer lived up to the hype. Cheers!

Thanks for doing this James! Glad you enjoyed it. We also wish there was more coconut character to it. I'll try to ship you out the homebrew at some point.

I opened my bottle of this at 1:15 AM when I saw you'd posted this video. Queued it up as I ran to the fridge, then sat down with my glass and drank and thought the beer along with you... almost like being back in the studio... Cheers! (I'm feeling a bit stuffed up, so it's not getting the most aroma and flavor across to me, but at least an 8 for me on the BBA Scale).

Thanks David! Yeah, you definitely get a lot more coconut as it warms. There's also some variation between bottles and draft.

Haha Columbus seems to get these releases faster than we do near Cleveland. :P Glad you decided to review this one James! Hopefully I'll get my bottle soon! Haha 22 oz is a lot....I'll come help you finish it. Enjoyed the solo review.

Even if you made the occasional video like this, it would still be great to have posts every once in a while. I agree that it's a solid beer, but didn't have as much coconut as I had hoped for.

I loved the beer, as it got warmed, almost room temp, I got some of the coconut, was almost creamy, I've had it on draft and bottle, liked them both a lot, but the bottled was better, I'd give it an easy 9 on the bba scale. Nice work, send some extra to James so he can send some to me:) (I'm the guy who runs the BBA facebook page, and was there in college when James was throwing up Natty light.)

I do agree that the coconut is subdued, likely wouldn't be able to pin that as part of the recipe. Be interesting to try it w/o the coconut in a side by side.

Fantastic beer. Needs to be served at proper temperature to enjoy. Straight out the fridge it's just a tropical IPA (not bad, but not unique). Give it a breath and you'll catch the toasted coconut on the end, which imparts a nice sweetness without leaning on the malt.

So Ohio gets this beer faster then Arizona... Our Stone distributor sucks.
Nice review James, good one to come out of retirement for.

tried this last night at a craft beer party & was pretty let down. sounds like it'd be right up my alley but i didn't get any coconut in the taste, and the bitterness at the end was too much in my opinion. not awful, but i won't be purchasing this one if i see it at my local beer store.

I never got any coconut out of it . smell or taste . good but not worth the price . creamy and clean . but i was disappointed as well. nine is too high more like 6. keep trying.

I was disappointed with this beer. The sense of coconut was minimal to nonexistent. To each his own. It's a crime that this show is ending and a damn shame.
