Verlaine as he was depicted in the movie perfectly proved Rimbaud's assumption that "love doesn't exist". I don't know if Rimbaud wanted Verlaine to love him - but he wanted him to be honest. Verlaine's menacity disgusted him, and it also sort of disappointed him, I guess. Verlaine, whom he had admired, turned out to be just like any other person - dishonest, weak, inconsequent, frequently abusing the term "love". I think he wanted to punish Verlaine for having disappointed him. AND he wanted to force him to finally admit that love doesn't exist. So he created a symbol of love - the hand on the table - and then stabbed it. Well, that's my interpretation. There are plenty of others, of course.

This was a great film that was released exactly ten years before Brokeback Mountain but I think the passion here between Dicaprio and Thewlis was better than Brokeback.
