    I love the Anderton's reviews, especially their treatment of budget equipment. So many gear reviews are obviously motivated towards wanting people to buy the product they are demonstrating. The Captain seems to understand that we are all gear nuts and that if we don't buy THIS particular product, we're still apt to buy one of the thousands of other items they sell. Good balanced review of the strengths and weaknesses of the VX amps, and appreciate that their review keep in mind what should reasonably be expected of the amps given the price.

      StormJH1 Thanks for that - you've pretty much nailed exactly how we approach all the reviews we do & I think you're right in saying that we are definitely not just trying to sell everything to everyone!

      +apinakapinastorba AC30s are loud fuckers. No wonder Brian May loves them.
      They're really finicky, it's far easier to thrash it with a drive pedal into the front and get an OD than it is to crank the guts out of it.

    • @ChadVanHalen5150

  • @DougMen1
    @DougMen1 Před 7 lety +9

    It sure would be nice to hear something other than super distorted metal tones. No demo of any of the effects, or any other amp models (of which there are 11). I bought this amp (VX2) just on the basis of the Boutique OD model, which makes a wonderful blues tone with a Strat on the neck pickup. But a lot of the other amp models and the effects are fine too. The critics of this class of amps from all makers seem to forget that amps in this category don't have speakers good enough for gig volume, even if they have enough power. They are made to produce a great sound at bedroom volumes. And they do that very well, especially for the cost. It's not a Kemper, after all.

  • @djlyonol
    @djlyonol Před 9 lety +26

    Good demo, but one KEY question: How does it compare to the Fender Mustang, or the new generation of practice amps from Blackstar, Orange, etc... There was a fantastic shoot out a few years ago. We want that AGAIN with the new kids! Please...

    • @orlock20
      @orlock20 Před 9 lety

      djlyonol The Mustang II, in my opinion, is still the lowest price practice and gigging amp, mostly because it has a decent output and decent 12" speaker. That being said, if you want to record stuff in a studio apartment, chances are you are going to use the speaker defeat and then use cabinet simulation anyways. If you want to selling home made backing tracks or make mixed tapes, those low wattage amps should do.

    Doesn't look like much and I'm not sure about how it sounds in the room, but mic'd and over the 'tube it sounds pretty darn nice, I must say. I'm scared of valve amps and am impressed with amp modeling, but i'm never sure if the product can send audio easily to a computer for recording, this room literally has enough space for a computer, a guitar and an amp... and a chair.

    Would like to see this kind of critical breakdown in "shoot-out" form for all the 'major' mini-wah pedals on market.
    I know there was that Star Wars themed one, but not much commentary was done on the drawbacks (if any) of each. One other video focused just on the Crybaby Mini, which was great.
    But there are so many contenders: Cry Baby Mini, AMT Japanese Girl Wah, Hotone SoulPress, and the Wilson Vintage Mini Wah.

    I watched this with great interest. After having owned and parted with, many makes and models of amp, I've determined I'm most partial to a Vox tone. Having had recently to part with my AC15 and AC4TV, I knew I had to buy another Vox when I could. I just got the AC4C1 BL and I am having trouble dialling in that 'Vox tone'. I preferred the tone of the AC4TV, but it was way too loud.. even on it's 1/4 watt setting. The new one is way more controllable, volume-wise, but can't manage to dial in the tone I love so much. The little plastic jobby, you're showing here, has that tone:-( Though the cap is right... it looks 'affordable'. Wonder if these are available in Canada yet... maybe be doing a return and exchange.

      Woodeso's Guitar Mods Nice to see you here! Look at the Vox VT series amps. It's a modelling amp with power tubes. Similar to these. Very affordable. I had the VT20+ and it had a nice Vox sound to it but, I wanted something bigger. If I remember correctly it was just over $100 us.

    • @dejongeblondegod
      @dejongeblondegod Před 9 lety +1

      The ac4tv too loud, even on the 1/4th of a watt? You got to be kidding right? If that's too loud i'd suggest buying an amp with headphones out. For that a fender mustang amp is great. Through the speaker it's so and so but through the headphones out it's really great.

    • @matzer8846
      @matzer8846 Před 9 lety

      Woodeso's Guitar Mods ... had same problem when switching from an AC4tv to an AC4C1. The C1 input stage is much like the old "top boot" preamp: very small gain. Since i play low output single coils i bought a boot pedal: nice! Works with a soft TubeScreamer - like the Maxcon 808 - very well too!
      But i have to admit: modelling works best at very low volume ... ended up buying a Boss BC-2 ...

    Rob, or anyone, would you be able to explain or roughly TAB out the rundown at around 17:43? From what I can see it's a sort of hybrid between pentatonic position 1 (or 5 if you fancy) and another mode, maybe natural minor but I'm not 100%. Rob does it a lot in these videos and I've always thought it sounded sick!

    Sounds really nice in comparison to the Yamaha THR10 and the Blackstar ID:core series of these new mini-practice amps. I think the 6.5" speaker is the way to go with those amps. The 3" speakers just sound too tinny and there just isn't enough low-end. I think the big feature with this amp is the JamVOX integration. But, I absolutely agree that amp modelers don't do justice to the AC30.

    These new VOXes seem to be a good choice for: beginners, home use, practice ... maybe small sessions. That amp sounds GREAT! If only it was battery powered-capable too, I'd buy one in a second even though I don't need one.
    I feel like that's something guitar companies don't get - yeah, a lot of the people that keep their companies alive are part time hobbyists with really nice jobs and tons of cash who spend more time buying gear than playing, but there are also a LOT of hard working musicians and broke hobby players who have to be very selective on which gear to buy, and how much. Usually, if they took that into consideration just a little more and did that ONE little extra thing to their product (whichever that would be) people like me would force themselves to buy it even when we can't afford it and don't absolutely need it.

    Timing is everything I know and it must be hard with all the new gear coming in all the time but I would like to see amps like this demonstrated with "affordable" guitars that would realistically match the budgets of the people, beginners mostly who would be the market for this end of the budget spectrum.
    Lets face it if you could afford a £500 upwards guitar you probably wouldn't buy a £79 amp to play it through. Me id buy a chapman and spend the rest on a decent amp ;).

    Even 15 watts is far too loud for home practice.I have one of the old Vox DA5 modellers.All of 5 watts but I have it permanently set to the 1/2 watt setting and still the bloke next door says he can hear me---and it's a detached house!

      +inot1105 just try them out...the cores will sound "bigger" then these (bigger, not louder) because they are Stereo...

    I think they sound pretty damn decent when you consider there are no pedals attached... Hey Lee, how about all amp reviews being done with no pedals?

    Would they be worth making your own bigger wooden cab, for a nicer look. as the plastic looks really tacky. If your into diy cabs , maybe add a bigger speaker ?

    How do these sound next to the Mini-5 Vox? They seem pretty similar but no drums or Mic nor batteries. Which would you prefer and why? I trust you, if it helps.
    I bought vxii and love it. The software works with any usb amp so big win for barely over 120 on special.

    ASIO driver (VX 2) does not work on the following platforms..
    win7 - 64b
    win8.1 - 64b
    win 10 - 64b
    "can't detect ASIO channels" message box appears in jam vox ( device - asio dropdown list )
    jamvox iii and the usb port is totally useless (the toneroom app is just a "setting app" you can save your vx ii user settings with it)
