Evolution of Grand Valley Speedway in Gran Turismo (1997 - 2023 / GT1 - GT7)

- The first big update of 2023 has been released for Gran Turismo 7 and it brings back one of the most iconic original tracks from the previous GT games with Grand Valley Speedway, now set in a completely new environment based on the famous California Highway 1, also known as Pacific Coast Highway. Here you can see a fast lap on Grand Valley with the Toyota Castrol Supra in every major GT game that included the track, showing the evolution of the track and the car throughout the history of the franchise.
Timeline:
0:00 Gran Turismo 1
1:40 Gran Turismo 2
3:28 Gran Turismo 3
5:22 Gran Turismo 4
7:16 Gran Turismo 5
9:12 Gran Turismo 6
11:07 Gran Turismo 7
After this update Grand Valley has now been included in every numbered Gran Turismo game. It is one of only 4 tracks that appeared in 7 of the 8 major GT games, along with Trial Mountain, Deep Forest and Laguna Seca.
Even though the track was placed in completely new surroundings for GT7 the layout of the track is still remarkably similar to that of the old versions, with the main difference being that the slow chicane was moved closer to the corner tunnel. Even my lap time is almost identical in GT5/6 and GT7!
In previous games the real world location of completely fictional tracks was not specified but in GT7 Grand Valley is now set at the famous California Highway 1 / Pacific Coast Highway, which can also be driven in The Crew 1-2, Grid 2, Grid Autosport and Project Cars 1-3.
As you can see in the video GT1 and GT2 have pretty similar graphics, while GT5 and GT6 are very similar in both graphics and physics. GT7 looks pretty similar to GT Sport, although Grand Valley was not included in that game. However, the PS2 games GT3 and GT4 look completely different from each other, with GT3 probably being the most unique Gran Turismo game in terms of both graphics and physics.
In each game I am using the featured version of the Castrol Supra, which is the '96 version in GT1, the championship-winning '97 version in GT5-GT7, the '99 version in GT2 and the '00 version in GT3 and GT4.
I am using the softest race tires that are available in each game, no further upgrades or setup changes, no assists besides the standard ABS and automatic transmission.
GT 1-4 were played on emulator, GT 5-6 on PS3 and GT7 on PS5. The units are set to miles in each game, since the NTSC versions of GT1-GT3 don't have a km setting and I want to keep the units consistent throughout the video.
I have spent a lot of time on the track in each game to record the fastest and cleanest laps possible for this video, as you can probably tell from some of the lap counters. Hopefully people will appreciate the effort that I put into this video to make it as good as possible. :)
What are your thoughts about Grand Valley Speedway and its brand new Highway 1 Edition in Gran Turismo 7? Feel free to share your feelings in the comments.
I have also made the same type of video for several other tracks already. You can check out the other ones here:

Thank you for this…Having raced and driven from GT1 to now, the new Grand Valley is (for me) objectively awful…Whether as a TT track for cars, Arcade Mode or Sport Mode…It's just terrible…And I take NO pleasure in saying that. In bringing it back, PD have ruined GVS as a both a driving and racing experience. 🙄🤮… I won't be going anywhere near it, in my GT7 playing.
Man, after all these years GT3 still looks incredible.
Yeah it does. I was thinking the exact same thing.
Gran Turismo 3 is The Master 😈
Well pretty sure that's on an emulator and using a higher resloution than the standard resolution on the PS2.
it does look great! seriously, spent sooo much time on this title and is where i first learned to drive
Yeah, I mean if you just squint your eyes a lil' bit, kinda looks indistinguishable from its succesors.
I must admit I'm pretty sad it became a 'highway'. By itself the setting is nice, but it feels like we've 'lost' the original track
It's not Grand Valley Speedway though. It's Highway. It's a separate track - a different thing entirely. Meanwhile Trial Mountain and Deep Forest were overwrites of the originals.
@@TheJakeMG Personally I would say that this is an overwrite too. I don't think they will ever add back the old version now, since the new one has almost the exact same layout and I can't see them adding two different "skins" for the same track in one game. I am pretty sure this track is meant to replace the old one.
I've seen some screenshot of Grand Valley Speedway inscription over parts of the track, maybe the old track will be released in a future update
@@thomas_coast That's extremely unlikely. This track is clearly meant to replace the old one, since it has the same layout.
@@thomas_coast Yeah, I noticed that too. The banners around the track said "Grand Valley Speedway" in the video trailer for the update but have obviously since been replaced.
R.I.P Grand Valley Speedway
This is more Grand Coast than Grand Valley. Cos of a break, it took me a while to link the 2 tracks together. Was like it was a new track and yet the corners were all pretty familiar
i came to say that
Watching the GT3 version of Grand Valley gave me 'the feels'... 🥰
For me the best Gran Turismo, hope GT8 that is on developed right now and will be exclusive for PS5, can bring me that "feel" that I got when PS2 arrive to my home
Yep gt3 is the only one I go back and play every so often apart from the latest gt.everything was perfect, visuals, art and sound of cars even.used to love racing the fto lm edition race car at the dream car championship playing grand valley at dusk..Good times
Yeah, same here!
even tho it's 2001 has such a 90s vibe
GT3 had the best graphics and sound
Note that the GT5 and GT6 editions of this track were ported straight from the GT4 version of the game. This was also true of Deep forest and Trial mountain tracks. So the new version found in GT7 is the first time the track has been worked on since GT4 !
Which means the team is extremely lazy, would you look at how many car shells they resued in GT5 & 6? Even worse asset flip than Forza series, it's baffling.
@@STRIDER_503 is GT6 even a different game from GT5? lol
@@STRIDER_503 Felt like there was a huge jump between 2 and 3, and then nothing as much until it radically changed with 7.
Still, pure nostalgia.
That's not exactly true, because the files for the PS2 versions of Grand Valley still exist within GT5 and can be accessed with mods.
The GT5/GT6 version was entirely a new track (as are all the tracks you can access without cheat devices/hacks), but it kept what made the original good, something the joke we got in GT7 which clearly went out of it's way to ruin something that wasn't broken.
GT4's version was perfect tbh, it almost felt like a real track.
I forgot just how big of a jump GT2 to GT3 was... crazy we never had anything like that again.
Or ever will 😢
I was disappointed with Gran turismo 3 not as much Depth as Gran turismo 2 but got better with the forth one
it is PS1 to PS2 jump
Do you think gran turismo 8 will be Gran turismo Dreams Where there are 30 cars on the track and UI LIKE GT4 The presence of signs such as koenigsegg and new cars like Lamborghini centenario and Lamborghini Revuelto: and Bugatti chiron super sport and Bugatti divo
It may not be the original track, but I gotta admit the track redesign looks visually stunning. I can't wait to see what they'll be doing with midfield raceway next.
I like this angle on it, as there's enough dull real life looking race tracks. Appreciate the spectacle and photo opportunities here. I'd like more road based tracks tbh for visual variety.
@@lb003g0676 same here... I wish they would add new york circuit back as well since it was last included in Gran Turismo 5.
I don't know about anyone else, but for me, GT7 has too many samey-same variations on the theme of "ribbon of tarmac in the middle of an ocean of grass."
I miss the likes of Hong Kong, New York, Madrid, Seoul, London, Rome, Tokyo R246, Seattle, Paris, and Monaco.
Part of what used to pass for fun in this washed-up series, was wondering in which world city we'd get to race next.
Nowadays, we're reduced to marvelling at the detailed models of the cows in the pastures.
This series stopped being fun for me, with the VW bus crawl in GT5. I haven't played it since.
And GT7 pretty much cemented my opinion that this series has forever gone to the dark side, with its aggressive Day One monetization that, conveniently, didn't go live until all the glowing reviews had already been published.
Enough. I'm done.
@@ToABrighterFuture cry more
.see you next week complaining
I would love to see the old tracks from gran turismo 2 - 4 back along with some more cars of the past like the FTO
Its just amazing how much potential the PS2 had, even by todays standard GT3-4 look pretty neat
Only because they were run on emulators with massively scaled up resolution. On actual PS2 hardware, this is more what it looked like czcams.com/video/rPtRdipKB3I/video.html
@@bliglum Less the resolution and more having actual anti-aliasing. PS2 didn't have anti-aliasing but did support 1080p
@@mrvwbug4423 But even the PS2 could technically output 1080p, the rendering framebuffer was just 512x512 so any higher output resolution than 480p would barely bring any difference
@@bliglumBut resolution is not everything! The fact that it still looks good at higher resolutions also means that models and textures were way better than they needed back then. There are a few PS2 games that look amazing at higher resolutions, while in most games the higher resolution shows how low-poly the models and how blurry the textures were..
I can honestly see this track catching on well after the update hype dies down.
The fact that it's based in Highway One now means it would be very popular in freeroam or cop/traffic roleplay lobbies.
There's a couple parking spaces on the side of the track after the chicane at the end. Had an improvised car meet in a free run lobby. There's a couple other spots where you can up and chill.
Just what we wanted from a Motorsport Racing Simulator. Traffic roleplay
@@DarkStryder360 Yes. Not everyone is a hardcore racer my guy
Yeah, but hopefully we could somehow, some way eventually get a GT version of Horizon; some sort of open world space to just chill/race wherever. It’s an insane long shot but it would be ideal. There’s such a dedicated fanbase to so many aspects of the game that it would just be awesome to have.
@@LP-770 kinda cringe tbh
It's unbelievable how fun GT1 and GT2 still look (because they are). It's unbelievable how good GT3 still looks. It's unbelievable they changed our precious Grand Valley Speedway to this soulless Highway 1 in GT7 😔
Like how could Kazunori-san approved these many changes?
Touch some grass
As much a I loved the grand valley speedway on older gt, can't deny that this one looks visually stunning, love how they took alot of the sceneries from the Big Sur area!
Grand Valley was perfect the way it was, period
Its Like the old One was red and this One is blue but still the same
Can't agree more
yep, they destroyed it
i agree- not saying the highway doesnt have a nice lil tone to it, but it feels empty
RIP big blue bridge.
that first corner taught me racing
would always fly off as a kid and get frustrated
but eventually learned braking
This was prob the only track map in GT that gave people an drift learning way
GT7 should be named "Grand Coastline Highway-1" since it's not in a valley anymore. But the redesigned is amazing overall.
Its amazing how well GT4 has held up over time. The graphics still look good today!
GT4 is the best looking out of all of them, very balanced
@@botbeamer …what…
Yup, everything except car sounds, GT4 was the worst in the series for that. Tourist Trophy, which was on the GT4 engine had slightly better sounds on the bikes, but most were still unrealistic.
Man, I really loved the new Grand Valley, specially the last sector, not only it looks good, it's new turns are not only challenging, but fun.
Its a huge mixed feeling. I just loved the concept of Highway, but at the same time the speedway was nostalgic and hella good.
Honestly I like the latest track. It's different but cornering is far more interesting then in the old ones. Same goes for deep forest raceway.
True, everything in the new Grand Valley is correct in terms of roads - untouched layouts, unlike Trial and Deep Forest
Deep Forest is more interesting? Lol, they destroyed one of the best corner combinations in GT with a straight and a hairpin 🤣
@@strebrr I prefer the hard corner at the end of the circuit instead of high speed corner. Everyone had different tastes. That doesn't make me wrong. Cheers
To me they perfected deep forest in GT7 it looks very realistic
The fact that GT1 Grand Valley looks more alive than GT7 Grand Valley is astonishing. Should've just kept it a Speedway.
That transmission noise has to be one of the most nostalgic sounds of my childhood.
I personally adore the new setting for Grand Valley. It's wonderful!
And it helps now that we can even create our own versions of the Grand Valley 300, too! Be it for GT300s, GT500s, Prototype Hypercars, or even F1 racers!
Wow, GT3 is gorgeous upscaled
I think thats its nice that pd came up with a whole new track, puts more perspective to the game and it looks great very nice hope to see more new tracks in future
Gt2 turbocharger sound was epic, brings back memories.
GT7... When you ask NFS track designers to do Grand valley
1:39 that sound.. my favorite from GT2. Anyway, the track changed quite a lot through GT4-5-6, then it's even totally a different circuit in GT7
Actually if you listen a lot of cars have that exhaust note including Castrol Supra from the first Gran Turismo
Didn't realize it until I heard it again 😮
Gran Turismo 2 is my favorite video game, I remember when my father bought it for me from France.
_"Ah yes, so this track has remained unchanged throughout the entire se- wait, what the hell?! What happened?!😦"_
I like how you trying fastest lap
great video!
The fact this is now a highway breaks my heart.
It's a bummer to see that the original is gone, but at least they made a super fun looking remake that still loosely resembles the old layout.
GT3 at Grand Valley! One of my all time favorite tracks
& where I first learned to drive
I spent so much of my childhood, just addictively churning out laps here
sadly we can't drive it in real-life
I always loved that whoosh sound switching gears in gran turismo 2
I’ve seen a few of these comparison videos, and the leap from GT2 to GT3 always blows my mind. Those games are two years apart
They are on a different fucking platform.
Personally, I don't really mind how the scenery is massively different from the original, but at least they kept the original layout and elevations which is still important. But then again, purists are so pissed right now, that's for sure.
They didnt keep the layout though. There a few parts that are different and not in a good way
well, there were lots of small changes to the course between each version, it's just that the scenery of the new track, while beautiful, is so, so far from the old designs i can understand people looking forward feeling disappointed. i think long-time players are also just wanting for more classic tracks.
The elevation changes are actually completely different.
Anyone who is pissed about getting an awesome new track in GT7 is an idiot.
@@johnm3907 It's the same layout rotated 90 degrees. Look at the side by side comparison and that becomes even more apparent.
This track is quite fun to drive around. I think this is one of the best original tracks in the series
Hmm. Interesting how PD completely changed the track without changing the track, if that makes sense. The flow is all still the same, lines are the same. Literally just a scenery change. As a "purist" who still thinks 4 is the pinnacle of the series (and admittedly have not played 6, Sport, or even 7), I honestly think this is a nice NEW take on an old classic. Least the little changes they made to the layout weren't as disruptive as DFR and TM......but lets be real, the TM chicane has needed a nerf since 1998.
Gt7 is so much better in every aspect dont fight it just enjoy it
But it not the same. The last corner before the straight for instance. I dont think you are as much as a purist as u think. But 100% spot on about gt4.
@@johnm3907 it's not meant to be the same, it's a new rendition...look at any track in real life all of them have changed configurations or added something to the original look
..
1,2 and 3 the camera was amazing, showing the side of the car on curves. 4 to 7 the camera is stuck behind the cars, gives an unreal sensation on driving.
That new track is so good it's kind of like a touge
You're damn right, it's a japanese company and don't have any touge track, don't collab with Best Motoring or Hot Version. It's sad.
the older layout was so nostalgic and see this track close to the ocean and being a highway makes it kinda sad
6 games keeping the original environment and suddenly this
The first time i saw GT3 in my highschool days, i was blown away with the graphics and framerate ( i wasnt aware of this term back then but i can see the gameplay was way more smoother than GT2) And i'm really envious with my classmates who has PS2 back then because i really want to play GT3 and experience the fun.
Was psyched to hear GVS was coming to GT7. GVH1 is quite a letdown. I mean it's visually stunning. If they wanted to do a coastal route based on some real world location, yeh fine. Go do that. But don't mess with the layout of GVS (it's similar, but not the same). And the new environment doesn't give me any of the nostalgia from the original
Now can we just have untouched, not new, but direct from GT1 Autumn Ring please?
And Red Rock Valley 😭
@@strebrr NASCAR should have one track like Red Rock IRL.
You like to TROLL don't you 😠
GT7 version should of been named "Bland Coast Valley"
I like what they've done in GT7, it's a nice spin on an old classic imo
Sounds like they change location and build an replica of the original
GranTurismo 3 had almost the best version of each original track ,, GT7 it’s more like a pikes peak than Grand Valley, 😢
GT4 versions of the tracks were a little better and GT4 also added a BUNCH of RL tracks (Nurburgring, Sarthe, Sazuka, Motegi and Tsukuba)
Guess we’re not gonna talk about how smooth the driving in the last one is
How coincidental,I stumble upon this video just after I finish the Grand Valley 300KM in Gran Turismo 3,on real hardware
The biggest generational leap was from GT2 to GT3. GT3ASpec was a true technical marvel on the PS2, and GT4 was more of the same but dialed up to 11.
I remember when I played GT1, whenever I raced on Grand Valley I'd always be thinking "man, this track is a masterpiece". No joke.
What the hell did they do on GT7?!
I find it really fascinating that the lap times have stayed pretty much the same througouth the years.
My heart will forever remain with the very 1st Grand Turismo.
I gotta admit, the graphics and physics have really improved dramatically since the original game. I just wish all these improvements didn't come at the cost of hurting gameplay, making the game less accessible for quick multiplayer sessions, forcing one of the split screen players to always use automatic, forcing people to go through 20 minutes of menus and cut scenes just to click multiplayer etc.
I haven't bought a new console since the Xbox 360 (and I played that for a grand total of maybe 2 weeks before I put it in storage like 13 years ago, never to be touched again) and the most modern console I played regularly was the PS2. GT4 is still the pinnacle of the series to me. Where it lacks in physics, graphics and sound design it makes up for it with amazing gameplay. I don't know why Sony had to add so many unwanted "features" like the 20 minute long menus and the lack of manual for one of the split screen players.
Gran Turismo 5 and 6 looking so visually similar that I legit thought it was just the same footage x_x
No long time after starting playing GT1 on my PSX I started using the bumper camera. I had the experience that in NFS2 racing felt faster that way and so it did in GT1 too, as wall as in every racing game I played. I never quit using the bumper camera, so it's the first time I saw 2, 3 and 4 (I played GT until 4) using the from behind camera and I cannot believe that even in PS3, racing still felt slower using that camera.
look how they massacred my boy ... this was my favourite GT track of all time
turning grand valley into a street track around the big sur in california is cool asf, i kinda wish gt7 had more street tracks
IMO, if they really wanted to use the "highway" backdrop, they should've just used it on a different track. GT1 to GT6 the theme of the track is the same. There were changes per iteration but it still conformed to the overall vibe of the Grand Valley Speedway from the beginning of time of the game. The "highway" theme is great, don't be mistaken. It looks excellent and the track flows and feels really well. It's just that in GT7's version of the track, it just isn't nostalgic. Happy to have a new track, but sad to lose an "original" one. They turned the Grand Valley Speedway into Grand Valley Highway.
Wow, that was quick
The iconic gt tyre screech gets me every time 😅
Looks amazing.
GT3 honestly holds up insanely well
Your GT5 and 6 captures look so smooth! I always have some of screen tearing wherever i play that game. is that something that just doesn't show up on capture or is there some special setting you're using?
I play on an original PS3 and I don't use any special settings. This is just how it looks for me when captured.
The audio still sounds great to me in GT2.
My favorite part of this track is the bridge and tunnel
I like the new track a lot. Reminds me of my time while I was in Malibu.
I do like what they did with Grand Valley Speedway, it's different, but I like it. I'd also like to see Special Stage Route 11 come back, one of my favorite night courses, and the Rome Circuit from GT2.
What about Red Rock Valley?
there was no jump in graphics from GT3 to GT6 thats is so crazy man that game was on another level back in the day
What a jump from 6 to 7! The environment looks so much better. I'm actually shocked at how good 4 looks on PS2.
I'm conflicted on the GT7s rendition of the Grand Valley.
On one hand, it is absolutely an alienating experience that they changed the track from full-fledged motor racing facility into random highways (lol, which seems situated nowhere around any valley there is). On the other hand, wow, I like the view! I actually always liked the typical coastal roads like at the LA and or the Australian ones.
This is a great demonstration of how game consoles went through an awkward time through 2006-2019 because ever since the PS2 it’s taken forever to get to a high enough resolution+detail+frame rate to finally creating a noticeable jump in graphics. Especially the whole PS4 era was a bad time for console owners because PC users were already at the PS5 generation.
I missed this track so much
I would really love to the see the Seattle street circuit added it was one of my fav tracks in GT4
I miss the old Grand Valley, nothing can replace it. Not even the new one
the bridge, how and why they cut the bridge???
@@emeraldarts Is still bridge there, are you blind?
Best track for drifting and watching drift replays, GT1-3.
Great vid, thanks - It was much better as a track rather than a highway I think...what happened to the engine noise in GT5? The thing that really gets me is, how come it only took 1:31 to do a lap on GT1 and now it's 1:45...has the Supra slowed down over the years :)
In GT1 and GT2 the car had an unrealistic amount of HP.
If you think about it. Nothing has changed in terms of graphics since gran turismo 3 and we are in the year 2023 now
Omg. The technical gap between GT2 and GT3 is mindblowing. 🤯
Maybe Im just overly nostalgic, but, I would have rather them design from the classic Speedway track instead, or in addition to. GT3 version was a big jump from 1/2. Felt Nostalgic running that on my Mazda 787b on GT3
You know what never changed over the years? Those vacuum cleaner sounds.
I always loved that blue bridge. So sad they removed it.
Nice car nice drive good luck
Yeah, doesn't feel the same anymore. They need to add the original stands and buildings back!
Look how they butchered my boy. No blue bridge, no views out of the tunnel etc… just call it something different man.
That's why its Grand Valley HIGHWAY. Its the OG all us old dudes remember, just new again.
@@zippoboy00 I get ya. I’m just too old now, I want a warm nostalgia blanket these days and while the track itself is the same it’s just not right for me. Getting rid of the forest/sunlight god ray straight section in Trial Mountain was strike one. Deep Forest getting screwed was strike 2. Im old aren’t I?
Highway 1 idk there will be 2 or speedway 1
@@richardingram2374 glad i'm not the only one who was really bummed about the removal of the god rays and trees overhanging that last stretch.

The original environment was cool, don't try to fix what it's not broken :(
That jump in graphic fidelity and general ‘art direction’ from PS1 era to PS2 is just the most massive of any release. Games’ graphics really did properly go up a generation back in those days.
There's a huge diefference to the last one too dude
Did not expect the track to look SO drastically different (I don't have GT7 nor a PS4 or PS5, in case you're wondering). Looks nice, though; I will say that.
It’s like they used the same sound for tyre squeal for years, interesting how the sensation of speed seems to disappear between GT1 and GT3 onwards
2から3の進化がすごい
I think I'll end up really liking the new layout. Besides, I can still go down Nostalgia Road with the previous installments of Grand Valley.
They could at least give us the option to play in the old version.
Every time I watch these videos, I wonder why we haven’t gotten a GT3 Remastered.
Grand Valley turned into Uncanny Valley, but the new one doesn't look bad at all.
고맙습니다.
Racing a group one on such narrow track is mind boggling, Grand Valley in GT7 is a lot more touge like.
Lol yeah, touge with 16 group 3 cars
Now I can make myself a custom race "Grand Valley 300 km".
i like how they replaced the grandstand with a mountain lol
Whenever I see these types of videos I'm always reminded of just how much of a massive step up the PS2 was over the PS1. I don't think there's been a noticeably bigger leap in technology and graphics between console generations since then.
