Chris Stuckmann reviews Missing, starring Storm Reid, Joaquim de Almeida, Ken Leung, Amy Landecker, Daniel Henney, Nia Long. Directed by Will Merrick, Nick Johnson.
My favorite thing about this movie is that because it is entirely on the computer you feel like you are doing the investigating with her. There were times where I would realize something seconds before the main character did. There is also a twist that is actually really obvious because of of the urgency of the pacing of the movie you don’t notice it and when you do you almost feel like “how could I have missed that it was so obvious” it keeps you so engaged into the movie
@@kurlykayla9013 SPOILERS It’s probably the scene when the man shows up at her house towards the end of the movie. That’s the only twist I can think of tbh, because there were a lot of clues as to who he was and the intention in that scene and the prior ones
spoiler alert is the obvious twist you're talking about at the beginning where the "last family trip" video (or whatever they actually titled it) was trimmed significantly? I still think that's only obvious in retrospect, on first viewing I simply thought she was cutting it because the guy started having worse symptoms or something after the nosebleed
I just got done watching the movie missing and I didn't get the ending it was like it was a it was called non-fiction like they had it on a movie that was on TV that the whole thing was a movie
I think the reason why I loved this movie was because of how realistic it was. every feature that she used and every pause and camera angle was so true and believable. the hey Siri through the computer was genius and it made me shiver. amazing that this was all shown through a computer screen and phone and that they used real apps that we all use in our day to day, not some made up thing.
I was blown away by Missing. Searching was already one of my favorite movies of 2018 and I didn't think it could be topped. But this is easily them most edge-of-my-seat I've been in ages. I'd forgotten what it was like to audibly gasp during a movie.
Dont look up her filmography if you dont want to know, but Im really excited for a role she is playing in a certain show soon. Hope that gets her an emmy
Honestly, it just is amazing to tell how different the feels of how Searching and Missing are as a basis. Searching is in the perspective of a parent, someone who hasn't held most of their years in the internet, showing a much more relatable feel for the older audiences, and hits on the parental compassion for wanting to keep your children safe. Missing proceeds to take it from the perspective of someone who practically GREW UP with the internet, which still felt relatable and fluid, while being able to hit similar emotional beats, on top of the riveting plot.
I watched Searching with my sister about a year ago. We both thought it was an exceptional computer-screen POV mystery drama with so many unbelievable twists and turns. I personally can't wait for Missing and I have fairly high expectations after Searching. Thanks for the review, Chris!! 👍👍
i think this movie is actually better than searching and not only because the stakes are slightly higher and the final act fits the "movie" trope. it's like the filmmakers learned a bunch from the first movie and created a better movie from it. You will have a great time watching

This movie must be an editing nightmare! It's an interesting "sub-genre," that obviously anyone who's ever used a computer can instantly relate to. I don't want to see a swarm of this type of thing, but when it's done this well it's very entertaining. A solid "B" from me, maybe even a "B+" because I admire the intricacy of the filmmaking so much.
I really wish more films and tv shows would use stuff like this sporadically. Most films and tv shows try to avoid technology altogether or its in the most meme like ways.
The atz show did a video on searching with an interview with some people involved. They talk for about an hour and I can really recommend it! They put so much effort into Searching, they developed complete subplots just to fill out the chat logs. Searching even has an alien invasion going on, when you look at some of the news that come up in the movie! It‘s crazy! I‘m sure that Missing is on a similar level of effort

Searching was a masterpiece and Missing is a very worthy successor. Great actors, fantastic story, endless twists and turns, and all the while managing to stay reasonably within the lines of plausibility. The creative teams behind these movies are massively talented storytellers and I can't wait to see what they do next.
Searching was my favorite movie the year it came out!! I had never seen anything like it before, so naturally I was very excited for Missing and I didn't watch a single trailer. It satisfied me on pretty much every level!! I had a fantastic time with it. I thought they made it even more riveting; not just with the plot and characters but with the sound design as well. Really great stuff!!! I could only imagine what the script writing process or story-boarding is like. I mean just so impressive. This goes to show you that the equipment you have doesn't need to be the top-tier. All you need is something as small as a webcam.
Caught searching by chance in television and after a few minutes of watching the movie I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. It was one of the most engrossing methods of storytelling I've seen in movies. I'm definitely going to watch missing too.
There were a few questions I had about how the plot played out (spoilers): - Why did the father keep the mother alive the whole time? What was the point there? He supposedly wanted her dead, right? - Why would she open the door to her father, even if he is her father? That was a dumb move. - Maybe I just missed it, but what was Kevin's motive for participating in this plan? If the father was simply paying him, how was the father affording all this? Too nitpicky? - Maybe Kevin was doing most of the coordinating, but to create the whole plan takes some serious sophistication, yet the father at the end seemed more like a crazy person than a mastermind. But, as I said, maybe Kevin did the coordinating. - If Kevin is so brilliant at this, how did he fail to realize he sent a live photo on the plane, accidentally revealing the face of the actress? Wasn't he just pretending to be technologically challenged?
I felt like Kevin genuinely cared about June so he left some clues to help her/the cops get justice after he fled. This is the only explanation I can think of since he also never changed his account passwords after finding out June was accessing them although he mightve avoided doing so because it would’ve made him easier to track too idk.
I saw Missing and although I liked most if it (wasn't crazy about ending)... I realize upon watching it again with a big crowd not only does it have great twists and unique perspectives of things but illustrates very well how we utilize technology to look into things we want answers for. It's actually done very well. Upon later thinking about the ending that I initially didn't like too much I realize how kinda brilliant it was in how it came together too with everything seen before. Like Searching it's definitely one to check out.
Maybe January has moved from being a dumping ground for bad movies to being a time when studios will release their risks that perhaps would not shine as bright if surrounded by bigger, more certain to make money movies.
Loved this film. I also appreciated it’s small connection to “Searching,” and apparently there’s a connection to “Run,” which was the second movie from the “Searching” director. Didn’t see where that connection was, maybe it was cut.
Hey Chris! I dig your content. Longtime fan. I heard one of the writers mention that in Searching there’s an alien invasion happening in the background as the movie plays out and that there are news snippets and articles commentating on the invasion- throughout. They conclude it in Missing. FYI

I was really looking forward to this movie but it got delayed because of schedule here in screens. Loved Searching. This looked pretty intriguing too and she looks quite authentic. Cool review.
Glad I watched this review, a couple of days ago I looked for Missing on IMDB without a rating but I saw the star, Storm Reid was not in the cast. I thought it could have meant the movie must not be good. Now watching your review I have to check this out.
I’ve found that since 2020, movie and TV studios are using January as free creative real estate. Sure you have your Dolittle’s and The 355’s but at some point, I think the industry realized they could use the first month of the year to their advantage and take some risks while they were at it. Plus, most people go to the movies based off word of mouth and reviews now. If something is being talked about enough or enough people like it, audiences will make an effort to see it. What better way to get films that most people would assume are terrible and blow people’s expectations out of the water? I though Megan was going to be okay at best before the reviews came out and it got a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, which actually made me want to see it. I did- and I absolutely loved it. The power of cinema, man.
I was kind of thinking about recently I don't really like when movies put focus on the current technologies we have because it usually isn't interesting. But I did think this actually looked quite interesting.

Missing follows in the footsteps of Searching (2018) by taking place on technological devices and giving me good messages, like how scary the internet can be and how much I appreciate my Mom.
I suspect the regular January dumps, we are used to, are just going to streaming sites. Sending films to theatres now is a costly gamble. So I suspect they are being more cautious of the films that are being released to theatres all together. This may be a change for the better.
i'm sure the clips are from the trailer (which i had not seen) but i think a couple of clips shouldn't have been used in a spoiler-free review video. but then again none of the clips actually spoil the final act so does it matter? yes.
I really liked this movie. Doesn’t overtake the first one, but that’s the only negative I have about this movie. Loved the performances, and the twists/turns, was engaging, and I loved the way the movie was told. 9/10
Searching is one of my favorite films I've seen it like 5 times. I'm waiting a week to go see Missing with friends at my local Regal before it sadly closes next month.
I had the pleasure of seeing this early. I've never seen Searching, but this movie made me want to. Really liked this movie and looking forward to seeing it again to see if there are any changes from the version I've seen.
From the clips shown in this video, it appears that the movie depicts the main character's actions on the computer in great detail. I am tired of films where characters easily hack into large corporations' computers with nothing shown about the process. I appreciate the unique editing technique that displays all of the main character's computer activities. I will definitely give this movie a try. Thank you for your review!
Yeah they show you everything. Nothing like that every happens like "blink, and magically we hacked something" and it doesn't always go as planned. Highly recommend.
One of the things I loved about both Seaeching and Missing is that they followed the rule n#1 of a goos mystery: they were FAIR mysteries. Every single clue was clearly show on screen, even if we didn't notice them until their respective reveals.
Remember these names ,Aneesh chaganty, sev ohanian ,will Merrick,Nick Johnson and Natalie qasabian . 3 great movies in a row for them in SEARCHING,RUN AND MISSING . THEY ARE GONNA RUKE THIS GENRE IN THE FUTURE
4:00 I just watched the movie and in my head I compared it to a combination of a Jack in the box and a matryoshka doll. You wind up the box building up tension and when that tension releases with a revelation beneath the first Jack is another Jack in the box that you have to wind again. This escalates the tension because you never know when it’s the final Jack in the box and what will be inside that final Jack in the box. Will it be a happy ending to all of this winding or will it be a knife out to kill you with all the tension.
This one felt a lot more like a gimmick than Searching did in my opinion. Missing just casually has photo booth open pretty much 24/7 so they can show what’s going on whereas Searching had no problem showing you just the computer for several instances
never knew until now from reading comments that the team that made missing/searcing also made run. and now i can see it!!!

Me and my wife watched Sarching in a sneak peak once. And I was ready to shit on it, but was really surprised at how good it was. So my interest in this one is very high actually.
Remember when summer was the dumping ground for movies? Then came "Jaws", and suddenly, it was a time when you could release bigger films that would be aimed at mass audiences. Especially the younger movie-goers who were out of school, and were looking for something to do with their friends. Now, it's January. Why not? The studios hope there is less competition, but as there are more and more good movies being released during the same time frame, the competition gets stiffer. Which is good for the fans.
Just saw it a few minutes ago and of course had to go check Chris Suckmann. 😂 SO pleasantly surprised. It was very fast. Realized quite quickly I couldn't look away for a second 'cause the I'd miss something. I highly recommend it!
I agree it hooked me in quickly, really movie mystery, how they keep making these types of found footage films because the directors for this are killing it!
The uncertainty she felt while having to click the bus for the security thing was so realistic.

i'm sure the clips are from the trailer (which i had not seen) but i think a couple of clips shouldn't have been used in a spoiler-free review video. but then again none of the clips actually spoil the final act so does it matter?
yes.
January has been great so far this year. Hopefully that August/early September period can hold up too 🙏
🔝Thank you for watching and commenting, congratulations you have been selected for our shortlisted winner's today DM🎉👍
So want to see this movie now because of Chris's review.
Thank you reminding me that your podcast is out, I forgot about that.
there is an alien invasion plotline going on in the background and another plotline with david kim and his date
I really liked this movie. Doesn’t overtake the first one, but that’s the only negative I have about this movie. Loved the performances, and the twists/turns, was engaging, and I loved the way the movie was told. 9/10
I'm seeing this one and Plane tomorrow, loved Searching, The podcast episode was also great, thanks Chris
I feel like the January curse only applies to horror movies, but even then, this year there’s been some surprising horror films
Searching is one of my favorite films I've seen it like 5 times. I'm waiting a week to go see Missing with friends at my local Regal before it sadly closes next month.
Berk
They did an entire episode of Modern Family in this style.. it was annoying at first but I ended up enjoying it
I remember that! Good episode
I had the pleasure of seeing this early. I've never seen Searching, but this movie made me want to. Really liked this movie and looking forward to seeing it again to see if there are any changes from the version I've seen.

Dang I had little faith in this movie, but I’m happy for Storm and Nia Long!
Hope to see more movies like this. I like this gimmick if its done well
Been waiting for this one. I never saw Searching but I will now.
If they made a third movie, they could call it "Abducted" and it could be about that alien invasion that was in the background in "Searching".
I'm happy it's good. I loved Aneesh Chaganty's previous 2 films.
What about the stuff in Searching about an alien invasion or something I remember pointing to a bigger story? Or am I thinking of another movie.
@@ethanstechworld207 Yeah most of the time it's by a nerdy-looking guy who types very fast and with a blink of an eye, "hacked".
@@immortallymortal9514 Yup
One of the things I loved about both Seaeching and Missing is that they followed the rule n#1 of a goos mystery: they were FAIR mysteries. Every single clue was clearly show on screen, even if we didn't notice them until their respective reveals.
Remember these names ,Aneesh chaganty, sev ohanian ,will Merrick,Nick Johnson and Natalie qasabian . 3 great movies in a row for them in SEARCHING,RUN AND MISSING . THEY ARE GONNA RUKE THIS GENRE IN THE FUTURE
Chris' T-shirts never disappoint.
Saw this recently and I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen. It was that good.
I actually loved Searching too ! So I’m excited to see this
This one felt a lot more like a gimmick than Searching did in my opinion.
Searching was really good. Looking forward to seeing this one this weekend.
Loved it! Great review!
I love the Cage Fighter shirt. SUPERMAN Cage would've been great.
I hope that Chris never changes his outro.
Wasn’t expecting this! Will go check it out now.
Underwater was my fav January movie, great recomendation from stuckmann
Best films that the month of January ever had since I been alive
*Loved* this movie. At least twice as good as the first one
This was better than I expected. I was on the edge of my seat thinking I have all the answers to the mystery. 😅
My head nearly exploded at 3:52 because for a moment I thought that was Phil Hartman. That would have been a hell of a twist!
Both Searching and Missing had me trying to guess and both had me completely wrong. I guessed a few things right but damn the twists are really solid
When they reveal what is going on it probably hits home for so many people and it’s such a sensitive thing. What a fucking movie!
Searching was cool and this looks great. Profile is my fav of this kind of genre.
Just saw it a few minutes ago and of course had to go check Chris Suckmann. 😂
SO pleasantly surprised. It was very fast. Realized quite quickly I couldn't look away for a second 'cause the I'd miss something.
I highly recommend it!
I agree it hooked me in quickly, really movie mystery, how they keep making these types of found footage films because the directors for this are killing it!
Dude Chris that cage fighter shirt is badass
