Something here at last for Spanish speakers. This clip embodies an old TV trick: you’re invited on to discuss your latest tour / book / band, but in exchange, you must perform. Increasingly that’s understood by anyone hawking his latest thing, but in my day that was only just becoming standard procedure. I was therefore totally unprepared to sit in with this great little house band on Mexico City TV, but there was absolutely no chance to refuse. That would have given grave offence. I had a blast. #billbrufordsearthworks
So interesting to see interviewers and a musician whose first language isn't English going more in depth with serious questions than anything I've seen for the last 20 years on the BBC or American television.

@@gregoryshields4258 Why 'not honest'? It's certainly the case with Earthworks, where Bill recruited players of exceptional technical ability and musical facility - culminating in the mercurial Garland and Simcock - and clearly wanted to push himself as far as possible. He's always had a realistic view of his own virtues and limitations, particularly in relation to the far higher performance standards and demands of the jazz world as compared with rock. @@simonbarrowuk No. It's not the case at all that he *always* plays with musicians who are *better than* him. That's laughable. It's polite to be self-deprecating, which in this case makes for a dishonest statement. You speak as though he's a "rock" player who decided to play with "better" jazz players. What a joke that premise is.
@@gregoryshields4258 Perhaps listen to what he actually says? Not ‘always’, but in Earthworks that was one of the key ideas. And yes, he’s modest, but also quite serious about this, as he makes clear when challenged on precisely that point. He also refers to it being easier in rock than jazz. No insult, just a reality.
@@simonbarrowuk The quote says "always". If the quote is wrong, then that changes things, but only slightly. A musician who is "better" than Bill Bruford would be a true unicorn, and I've yet to hear anyone who is better. Perhaps it is you who should listen, to his albums. Then you would understand how ridiculous it is to talk about someone being "better than" Bill Bruford.

The only Latino jazz pianist I heard play is Gonzalo Rubalcaba from Cuba, who is pretty amazing!
@@elbay2 Yes, Rubalcaba seems almost superhuman to me. First saw him with his band at Mt. Fuji Jazz Festival playing "Giant Steps." Wow.
@@elbay2 Look for a band called Sacbé. That was the three Toussaint brothers (unfortunately only one survives). They were amazing!

This is a great interview, especially because both of the interviewers seem more interested in the how and why of it rather than just the usual stuff.

The pianist here is Eugenio Toussaint, great mexican jazzist and musician who sadly killed himself in 2011. RIP

If a band can not play live, they are not truly musicians. Excellent comments about the importance of what you choose to leave out when playing jazz. Suave.
Bill's head was definitely into improv, which is why he only played one tour with Genesis and is my understanding of why he left Yes for King Crimson. However, his friendship with Phil Collins is well established as they both played together with Brand X, a fine fusion/jazz group from the '70s and worth listening to.

Keith Emerson, besides his classical training, was a fan of and studied/played jazz and incorporated various jazz elements and styles into his work with both The Nice and ELP (and his solo work).
There was a CD released a little while back called The Kieth Emerson Trio of all straight jazz that was recorded in the early-mid 1960s when he was like 19 or something. It's worth tracking down.

That's awesome. Never got to see Earthworks live so this is one of the very few times I've seen Bill play straight jazz. Nicely done!

I was watching TV the day this TV show ("Suave es la Noche",) was broadcasted (by the "22" TV channel, in Mexico City).I think that it was broadcasted in July 27, 2004 (in the last tuesday from that month, as it was mentioned in spanish by one of the announcers "out of the camera" at the end of the TV show). I think that Bill Bruford and his band Earthworks played one or more concerts at a venue called "El Lunario" in Mexico City in july 2004. A very good interview which I was looking for in youtube some months ago.

Two concerts I really enjoyed seeing were ABWH and Earthworks in Toronto Canada. The two concerts I missed were the Discipline tour with King Crimson and the duet with with Patrick Moraz at the El Mocambo.
Yo ví esta entrevista en la TV en vivo. En aquel tiempo estaba empezando a tocar guitarra, escuchar rock progresivo y tenía un disco de Fernando Toussaint(el primero que escuchaba de jazz) y después vi ésta entrevista y todo me voló la cabeza. Gran programa que era “suave es la noche“.
