I saw Bill Bruford and Earthworks in a bar 4 months after this aired and he still didn't know if he was in King Crimson or not.
He got sort of agitated when I asked him about it ...
And about six years later, with both of these guys there, King Crimson was reborn as the mighty Double Trio.

What year did this air? Did Bruford host this show on a weekly basis? If I hadn't seen this clip I don't know if I would've believed that Bill Bruford hosted a show on VH1, where he would talk to Tony Levin and perform with Earthworks! In the small town that I grew up in, we didn't get VH1 until maybe 1985 or 1986. We got MTV at the same time so I mostly watched it.

First of all, Jazz IS the Blues. That's the heart and spiritual center of Jazz music, PERIOD. Yes, of course it evolves and should include many disparate influences, BUT, the MUSIC/Compositions still have to be GOOD!!! If you're going to write a record filled with compositions that has nothing to do with the center of jazz which is the blues, and not just the blues itself but traditional bebop language, and incorporate electronic drums, you better believe it will be hard for not just the American jazz scene, but ANY real jazz fan base to accept as JAZZ. Call it whatever you want Bill, Earthworks is only MARGINALLY an actual JAZZ group. It BECAME more of a jazz group by the end of its life, but it is STILL debatable if it EVER was truly jazz. And YES, the definition of JAZZ, not jazz-rock or something else, SHOULD have SOMETHING to do with the more primal and roots languages that led to the advent of REAL JAZZ; namely the BLUES. As out, or left of center and experimental as Coltrane's music got, it ALWAYS maintained a deep relationship and reference to the BLUES. So, forsaking the blues is not the answer either Bill, regardless of what country one happens to be from. Sorry, Jazz was invented right here in America, and it was invented by African-Americans. So, ignoring its conception, also known as the BLUES COMPLETELY, is not very wise if you want to be considered a JAZZ musician. Doesn't matter what country one is from, need to demonstrate real internalization and mastery of BLUES language and BEBOP language if you want to be considered a JAZZ musician. VERY few exceptions all throughout history of someone that is a REAL JAZZ musician that does NOT exemplify the aforementioned mastery of Blues and Bebop language. George Shearing is a great example. Born in your country Bill, and was a GREAT BEBOP pianist. Gordon Beck, Dave Holland etc etc. ENGLISH Jazz musicians Bill, that DIGESTED and assimilated REAL BEBOP and BLUES language.

A consumate gentleman, as were they all.
    Articulate to a fault.
