I think that writing one’s own obituary is a challenging idea because it requires one to confront death and the dissolution of one’s own ego. Education should always be challenging, because growth cannot occur without challenge.
Increasingly, we aim to create a world safe of challenges and intrusions. While this is a noble cause, it distances us from the elements of life that force us to become the greatest, most self-actualices versions of ourselves.
As for going over safety procedures, I live in Nashville tn where a shooting recently occurred. I cannot think of a more fitting time to review such procedures.
You speak of the damage caused by introducing challenging ideas to students- what about the damage that would be caused by not introducing them to challenging ideas? The world is a challenging place and if we don’t prepare students for the real world then we may increasingly see young adults unable to cope with stressors.
@@RegularGuyJake I agree. I'm just outside Nashville too. We sure are living in difficult times, aren't we?
@@poppylove3673 the challenges we face in todays world are certainly different from the challenges at any other point in human history. I think our quality of life has largely increased. We enjoy many benefits of such an affluent society, but the problems we deal with are unique.

All my teachers wanted us to think and reason with logic. You can tell by todays kids that its no longer taught. Unless a kid has parents who teach them how they can't reason anything out. Our govt doesn't want people to think. He actually has a lawsuit if he goes for it. Can't tell him why he's fired means they know they're wrong.
Yeah making kids write their own obituary is a great way of how to teach people who can’t even process their own emotions😂
As an assistant teacher, I can tell you that when your superiors say that they can’t tell you what you did wrong, and the school district has no comment about the situation, then those are sure tell-tale signs that they know they’re in the wrong but are too stubborn to admit it and proceed to continue pushing blame on you. Over ten plus years of my life as an assistant teacher. Whatever dreams and passions I had about becoming a full-fledged teacher has been long dead and buried. At this point, I’m just trying to help any students that I can while still being an assistant teacher. This teacher was only trying to help his students to think critically and look how he gets treated…unbelievable.
So becuase a teacher actually wants to introduce reality of today's challenges, he's being forced out! Such a shame

Should we have children write their own a obituary?
While it may seem like a unique or creative idea, it is generally not recommended for children to write their own obituary. Writing an obituary is a difficult and emotional task that is typically left to close family members or friends. Children may not have the emotional maturity or life experience to write a meaningful and appropriate obituary that honors their life and legacy.
Additionally, writing an obituary can be a difficult and painful process, and it may not be appropriate to ask a child to undertake this task while they are grieving the loss of a loved one. It is important for children to have the support and guidance of caring adults during this difficult time.

I’m a therapist, and I’ve been a part of all sorts of groups with a variety of different populations. I have given clients this same assignment. It’s not meant to be a comfortable assignment, especially since so many people have death anxiety, but at the same time I’ve seen many clients look at life a lot differently after completing it. It’s effective because it has the potential of helping people take a close look at how they’re looking at their life currently. Am I living up to my values? What are my values? How would I spend my time if I were going to die within the next 6 months? Who would I spend my time with? What would I do with my life if I had more time? What goals have I not achieved yet?
Death is one of the “Givens of Existence” According to Irvine Yalom. We all die, and we’re not getting it out of it. It could happen in 50 years from now, it could be today. When we face this, and own the fact that we will die, it provides us with more of an urgency to live authentically. Irvine Yalom quotes many philosophers on this topic:
"Learning to live well is to learn to die well; and conversely, learning to die well is to learn to live well."
"It is only in the face of death that man's self is born." Saint Augustine
Yalom also talks about how facing our own death tends to "Trivialize the Trivial." In other words it helps us take a look at the non-essential parts of our lives and to not worry about them so much. It helps us cut out the stuff that doesn't fit in with our priorities. Overall, it helps us to take a look at our lives and helps us to find a sense of meaning and purpose. Yalom states that, "Although the physicality of death destroys
man, the idea of death saves him." Far to many of us live our lives as if we had an endless amount of time, as if we're going to live forever. We put things off, procrastinate, don't take risks, we don't apologize for screwing up or hurting someone, we don't ask someone out on a date, we put off school, we don't apply for jobs, we don't try new things etc. All because we think that we have more time.
Overall, I don't think this man should have been fired for teaching this lesson. Although, I do believe it is important to be kind and respectful to others, teachers do students no good by avoiding tough issues like this. By avoiding tough issues and coddling people, it makes them more weak. Part of being a therapist involves exactly this: helping people face things that really suck, not run away from them, and how to find meaning, even in their own suffering. Teachers have hard jobs and deserve more respect than this.
Each us needs to take accountability for our own lives. Each of us is responsible for the choices that we make. We are in charge of our thoughts, choices, feelings, and our reactions (to people, places, things, and situations). No one can make us feel a certain way. We are in charge of that. We do not have control over other people's thoughts, feelings, choices, and reactions, yet many of us spend so much time on trying to change what we don't have control over. "If only she did this....", "He shouldn't have done that...." We don't have control over other people. We only have control over us, period. "Life is 10% what happens to me, and 90% how I react to it." Charles R. Swindoll.
I'm now going to step off my soap box. Everybody have a good day, because it's up to you anyway.
That's all peachy but... let's just say for the sake of argument you have a suicidal kid... Would you ask him to write his own obituary? Maybe it is just me, but that would probably aggravate the situation further... the last thing you want a kid in this scenario do, is to further think about dying or his obituary... Specially giving it blindly to an entire classroom, and probably not be doing it on a case by case situation. But what do I know... I'm not a therapist, but I would assume that if you are one, you deal with your patients individually, not collectively. ANd in case you are doing some sort of a group therapy, your approach should be different. But... I'm not a therapist!
@@herlandercarvalho I sort of agree. The classroom scenario with a bunch of young kids who parents most likely don’t teach their kids about mortality, is a bit harsh. Plus these kids are faced with school shootings to begin with and I’m sure to hear about dying tomorrow doesn’t help. American kids don’t know jack about anything until they are face with it involuntarily. But that being said I wouldn’t want this teacher to go around teaching the kid about shootings and sht and acting like a therapist, when that is not his job. But I don’t think the obituary was the issue for me. Although I know a professor who teaches college students and he does this but differently and even though some complain it’s a dark assignment, I would say he does it in a more positive way. But these are college students, not high school students. I am mixed about this. But I don’t know what the culture is in schools now with the gn violence, so maybe it was appropriate? I do think the teacher should have gotten a warning and not get fired. Best
"Noone can make us feel a certain way" What??? That just goes against everything we know about grooming/brainwashing/conditioning and psychological conditions and chemical imbalances. We can make people feel a certain way very easily actually and chemical imbalances can make you feel a certain way that is outside of our control. This is essentially "you can choose to be happy. If your depressed, its just all in your head". That's just a cop out for parents, friends, therapists, docs and others who don't want to do their jobs or help. That statement doesn't ever fix the issues that caused issue in the first place and actually makes it worse. It's not helpful advice and it's not necessarily something people have full control over. It's your job as a therapist to help them figure out where it's all coming from and how to cope properly. You're right you can't control what other people do to you but this whole "you just need to be stronger, stop letting it get to you" doesn't actually help anyone at all. It just make people feel smaller again and isn't constructive coping advice. It's just invalidating.
@@herlandercarvalho Yes, absolutely. Having been a suicidal kid before, I didn't need an assignment to start imagining what my obituary would be like. I did that all on my own. And having someone to guide me through that in any sort of way and have me think about these things in a healthier way, would have been greatly appreciated and beneficial to my mental health.

@@WilliamEllison I don't know if you work with terminally ill children and are speaking from that experience, but it feels like you're projecting something like that onto this situation.
"Children may not have the emotional maturity or life experience to write a meaningful and appropriate obituary that honors their life and legacy." It didn't have to be meaningful, it was a writing exercise for a psychology class. It's not even that uncommon of an assignment (as you can see by many people's experience in the comments). It's intention is to be thought provoking and to allow the kids to think about real life consequences in a non-emotional context. It doesn't matter if they write a "good" obituary, it's the thought process behind it that's important. Because, again, this is an assignment in a psychology class.
"Additionally, writing an obituary can be a difficult and painful process, and it may not be appropriate to ask a child to undertake this task while they are grieving the loss of a loved one." No one died. This isn't following a the death of a loved one or a classmate. There is no trauma or grieving process to be mindful of in this instance.
There's no reason for this teacher to have been fired. The fact there's no response from the school or county speaks to the fact that they've been instructed by attorney's not to since the teacher is probably seeing if the ruling can be overturned or if they can sue for wrongful termination. Unfortunately, the teacher's probationary so he probably doesn't have much recourse. We have a major teacher shortage in Florida so this was a stupid move for school authorities on many levels.

That's fuckin rough, but also awesome. I'm sure it was a traumatizing but ultimately very helpful insightful experience, lol.
One of my assignments in a high school English class was to write my own obituary. It was an assignment that really made me evaluate the person I was becoming vs the person I wanted to be as an adult and helped me make some valuable changes in my life.

Public schools don’t like critical thinkers. They want sheep
We had the same assignment in 7th grade. We also had to write a paper on what we would choose to do if we had only 24 hours left to live and knew it. This became for all of us a topic of conversation with our parents. I will never forget Pam's dad told her with a dead pan expression that he would "eat steak and go fishing in Florida." Her dad should have been a standup comedian. We all laughed.
Yes he's done nothing wrong the actually show videos in school about drunk driving showing details of a wreck and the outcome of the teens that died. They should have also at that time had the white what they want their obituaries to say
I remember writing an assignment like that when I was younger. I even wrote how I likely would have died, as I have a tube in my head that, if ruptured back then, would cause a brain bleed. I discussed it with my teacher and explained that every day, to me, is borrowed, as I statistically shouldn’t be alive. It left her speechless as I didn’t tell people in my daily life how fragile life was for me.
Now as the years move on, I’ve found that the odds are evermore stacking against me as my body degrades. I need to write that assignment again.
I had to write my own obituary when I was in high school. I didn’t think this was all that uncommon. It’s a good way to think about what people would say about you if you were gone. It’s very self-reflective. People get way too upset about simple things these days. It’s ridiculous.

Right? If I had done ANYTHING the kids of today pull, I would have been spanked or slapped on the behind with a ping pong paddle. I personally don’t approve of doing that to a child, but that was done to me and countless other millennials in the 90’s. We got our butts hit if we dared to step out of line and our parents got actual beatings with a belt or switch because in the 70’s and prior it wasn’t considered abuse back then like it is today. I’m glad it’s considered abuse now but I’m just saying we millennials never would have gotten away with this and we use gentle parenting because of the abuse we endured from our boomer and Gen x parents but apparently that’s not enough. I have friends who use gentle parenting and it won’t get through to their kids. It’s the schools and the media causing the problem. Gen Z kids who are NOT allowed on social media who are homeschooled DO NOT act this way. It’s only those in public school who get exposed to technology who act like this. My cousins use iPads as a baby sitter and I don’t feel that’s right. If I ever have kids, there will be no phones and no iPads, no technology until they are at least 16. I didn’t get a laptop until I went to college and no phone until age 19. My parents raised me right. If I ever have kids, I’m home schooling them because I don’t want them exposed to all this woke crap. It’s just unbelievable seeing kids being coddled and allowed to use phones and computers and iPads in school. When I was in high school in 2008 senior year, if you got caught with a phone they didn’t just confiscate it, they went through your texts and calls and took the SIM card out and in some cases they’d crush your phone as punishment. If you got caught with a laptop they threw it into the garbage. You had to EARN the right to use the computer lab. You had to use library cards and actual books and weren’t allowed a calculator. My how things have changed.
This is the GOAL of the powers that be,,,, to mess kids up. Kids with no family or moral or solid social foundation.. are Much easier to mold into good little non-thinking subjects. We no longer teach Civics in school because kids can't screech about their God-given rights... if they don't know what they are. (And this is STILL not enough to get collective conservative leadership off its a s s to fight back in any significant or meaningful way.)

Should we have children write their on a obituary?
While it may seem like a unique or creative idea, it is generally not recommended for children to write their own obituary. Writing an obituary is a difficult and emotional task that is typically left to close family members or friends. Children may not have the emotional maturity or life experience to write a meaningful and appropriate obituary that honors their life and legacy.
Additionally, writing an obituary can be a difficult and painful process, and it may not be appropriate to ask a child to undertake this task while they are grieving the loss of a loved one. It is important for children to have the support and guidance of caring adults during this difficult time.
Instead, children can participate in other ways to honor the memory of their loved one, such as sharing memories and stories, creating a photo album or memory book, or participating in a memorial service or celebration of life.
Very thankful this guy was fired.

You render them incapable of taking responsibility for their actions. Look at the streets of Chicago. Are those teenagers "just children"? You think maybe if they had teachers like this man who challenged them to see the world as society and not just through the lens of their own myopic eyes, they'd understand that we don't do certain things because other's rights and safety is just as important as ours. Also, with proper classroom control, and not allowing students to violently attack teachers (Which IS happening and why good teachers have QUIT) but, really, explain what you mean, and what you believe students should learn to be functioning, capable and knowledgeable adults. And, with classrooms that have students from ALL walks of life, beliefs, cultures, and ideologies. And, you have to have something to be able to reach them all.
And, then, if you say or do ONE small thing that any student "feels bad" about, you could lose your job. Is it fair for ANY job to have their employees "walking on eggshells every minute"? And, where a student who gets a failing grade starts a campaign against the teacher, also getting them fired, blaming the teacher instead of themselves.....because they just didn't STUDY or learn the material? That's the problem with progressives and leftists, they don't deal in reality, just fantasies like a socialist utopia and saying a man can become a woman.
Thinking critically as part of the woke mind virus. We can’t have that in our schools anymore.
This teacher is an idiot, he doesn't seem bright enough to be teaching anyone, it's an extremely tenuous link between psychology and "what would you do if you'd die tomorrow", the fact it provokes an emotional reaction is irrelevant to the subject
He included such a pointless and unusual exercise into his lesson because he found it interesting but it wasn't an appropriate thing to include
Just consider what people might be going through in their lives that might make them not want to think of a thing like that and would just want to learn psychology instead; there could be people there who have family members dying of cancer, renal failure, Alzheimer's etc, they themselves might have a condition which could kill them one day, they might've lost a family member recently, especially since the pandemic started
Give him the job back!
i’ve seen so many teachers do so many worse things with no one saying a word
As a teen in Texas, we took part in "Every Fifteen Minutes" where a select group of students were selected to take part. We all had impactful experiences through that program. Our parents had to write our obits, etc. If you've never heard of the program, it may seem weird.. but it definitely made us think about our actions and choices. I think it's important for children to understand the importance of their life, and others around them... to understand mortality.. maybe there would be less s*ootings if more lessons were taught like that in school now a days. The student that was bothered by it probably has some issues they need to deal with- firing the teacher isn't going to help that one kid. It's disgusting to take out educators who are out there teaching REAL life lessons.
He wasn’t fired over the assignment. He was fired for making it political.
@@CowboyConan How did he make it political?
@@maargenbx1454 No school district would fire a teacher over that assignment. He’s lying. He turned it into a rant about guns, I guarantee you.
@@CowboyConanit’s Florida, has some of the most backwards laws regarding education. Wouldn’t surprise me if they did just fire him over the assignment, but i guess in Florida talking about school shootings is “a rant about guns”
@@youngstacker0493 Teacher’s have unions. And a district has protocols for dismissing someone, they can’t fire without warning or cause. So he’s lying.
I wrote my obituary as an assignment in high school. It was meant to make students think about what kind of person they'd want to be remembered as and to identify the accomplishments you'd want to reach in your life.
Exactly! Nowadays, after this assignment, school shooters would have to consider how “remembered” they would really be.
They would be left with no alternative except to succeed in school, make friends, and be a hero to underclassmen in order to really be remembered!!! 🎓👩🎓🧑🎓👨🎓
@@Riva2025 I agree, he's trying to help fix the root, societal issue of school shootings, rather than just trying to stick a bandaid on it so you don't have to bother trying to fix the actual difficult problem
This
@@Riva2025 I will admit that when I did this assignment, mass shootings were not a thing. We never had active shooter drills and the thought of school as a dangerous place would have been laughable. Thus, I understand that it's a different climate for these kids, but the sentiment and purpose of the assignment is still valid and in some ways even more prescient.
I did this same lesson 21 years ago in middle school. What the actual hell.
That's not inappropriate, that's reality.
I'm a former public school teacher here in Chicago. The decision to terminate a faculty member should NEVER be based upon the simple fact that one unusually sensitive student was triggered by what was obviously a reasonably thought-provoking and challenging assignment in, of things, a psychology class! We are making our kids these days into soft, wimpy, emotionally delicate little cup cakes............that angers me! This whole situation angers me. I hope this fantastic fellow teacher is quickly hired by another school.
Very well said!!!
I hope that school shootings in this country having become an almost daily occurrence also angers you
I mean, I wouldn't call it unusually sensitive. Thinking about your death can be very upsetting, and unfortunately we have made society very, very afraid of the concept of death to where people often won't discuss "what if" situations. I think the kid is either naturally scared of something scary, or has been influenced by society to be scared away from considering it.
Something can be thought-provoking and challenging while also being upsetting. Saying "this isn't meant to upset you" doesn't stop it from being upsetting. The kid wanted to see a counselor afterward, and should have a right to it. You never know what someone's even been through so the option should always be available.
I had a psychology teacher ask for an assignment to right a short essay about... I don't quite remember, something like "what's your experience with something bad", and I simply wrote I didn't feel comfortable answering the question and didn't want the possible bother and trouble that would come with answering. And my teacher accepted it - he never called me out, didn't mark it as incomplete, and never really mentioned it at all. The fact I had the option to just say "no thank you" on an assignment like that is something I think about a lot, even if I'm not entirely sure what the question had been now. It was just really nice and cool of him to just let it go like that.
@@750count Why are you acting like you're trying to trap him by saying that? And also it's not almost daily at all? It's happening far more than it ever should even be close to be, and it's becoming a very serious societal problem, but it's luckily no where close to almost daily by any means
@@destinpatterson1644 Trap him?
He opened a door for that one child who needed help in dealing with what they were feeling. The stress some children are dealing with is real. In my eyes, I think he saved that child. The other part about what to do if something was to happened and they didn't know....shocked me. This should've been an eye opener to the school...that they need to be getting this out there for these children. God Bless this Teacher for his love of children.
Exactly 💯
Wow I didn’t even look at that perspective initially. Such good insight and you are so right. I actually feel bad for him. I think back to some of the lessons we did in middle school and high school and they would be deemed inappropriate today. What’s wrong with people? Why don’t people want their kids to know what’s really going on in this world? They don’t even teach sex education and anatomy anymore in most places. It’s ridiculous.
They rather focus on teaching about sexuality!...smh
They're worried about hiring some two spirited guy with an wig and heels on times sure are moving sideways because damn sure not moving straight it seems
He made the assignment political instead of self reflective.
What a stupid thing to fire a guy over. I wonder what else happened for them to want to fire him so badly?
Kids these days are WEAK! My god! This is a fantastic teacher who actually cares.
Parents these days aswell 😂
