His is another way to describe the effect of Karen's voice. Picture this. You are a young child and your mother is next to you, reading an amazing story to send you off to sleep. That is the effect of her voice, only it is in song. You feel safe, warm, comforted and protected. That is the power of this angel's voice. Nothing like it in my lifetime.
My sister went to a Karen Carpenter Concert & was able to go back stage & got her autograph.

You are absolutely right about her appearance and illness. Other reactors on the net have not picked up on that. At the time, the public largely did not either. This song, in 1981, followed eleven years of hits for them. It was the last single that we heard from them, times and trends were changing, and it was not the big hit that their other singles had been. But that video is very revealing.
She made this song when Richard was in rehab. He hated it and she chewed him out. Evidently, he gave in and helped her with the final cut. But ya, she's already looking deflated. She wore big bulky clothes in an attempt to hide it.
Yes, true. Whilst doing all that, it means she understood in ways her Health was failing big-time. I read how when she was under a Doctor's care, she was secretly taking her obsessive quantities of laxatives. In addition to that, was jogging to & from her Office visits (trying to continue losing weight). She needed to be monitored 24/7 & her room turned inside out. That should've continued until healthy improvements were made at her own pace.
Actually, none of that was true. This was made with the Made in America Album. Produced by both of them.

My thoughts are with anyone going through such a condition, and family and friends going through it, or have lost someone dear to them
As painful sometimes to listen to their music, her voice is so pure and comforting that it envelops me, soothes me, and comforts me.

Happy New Year to you and your family Dani. Wishing 2024 is a healthy and joyous year. It is difficult to watch the later videos from Karen Carpenter but we have so many to watch from her prime and fully enjoy.

Happy New Year Dani! Yes, I have a hard time watching anything with Karen that was filmed from 1980-82. Both of them were in bad shape. Richard got addicted bad to quaaludes. Karen passed at 32 which seemed "old" to me when I was 13 but, of course, now seems like a baby to me. She had so many more songs to sing. A good reminder as we head into a new year to be happy to have your health and surrounded by a loving support of family/friends.

I attended their 1st concert in the Bay Area in 1970 (my 1st ever concert). Followed their career until Karen's death; her body dysmorphia lead to anorexia nervosa where she would purge after eating and over time weaken her heart which lead to heart failure - so sad!
So sad that she couldn't overcome the most important love. 😢

Part 1
Let’s go back to the beginning and a young healthy Karen. It’s November 1970, Close To You was the hit of the summer. Now they are performing live to tape on The Ed Sullivan Show in a Veterans Day special. (At a Military Hospital) They are performing a new composition that Richard arranged from a request by Burt Bacharach. It’s The Bacharach/David Medley. Composed of numerous hits from the 60’s. Karen is singing AND drumming and harmonies are live from the band members. I’ll use keywords to let you search out the video as links fail sometimes. Choose the one from the Sullivan Channel as it’s the best quality.

I was introduced to a young female singer in October. She has numerous Short videos across all the major social platforms. She also has 5 complete songs and one full length video. That’s what I’m requesting now. She engineers all her Short videos and the 5 full songs were all professionally recorded but that’s for later if you’re impressed. So, she made a Short of part of the above Medley. She’s a 20 year old Carpenters super-fan. I’m an OG fan and I respect her no end for out fanning me. ❤ After it was released she was challenged by a viewer to do the ENTIRE Medley. Well, she took the challenge. So what you will hear is Tori using a music backing track but performing ALL THE VOICES and doing the mixing, stacking, editing all of the rest. Other than the music which was canned, she did everything you’ll see and hear, that involves her. Oh did I say she’s an Alto? So when I say all the voices, I mean “Richard” too. And she kinda sounds like… I’ll let you be the judge of that. As a singer and instrumentalist, I think you’ll be impressed. She plays keyboards and guitar but not here. I’ll do the keywords again.

There is synergy between the two songs. It’s the first time in 53 years that The Medley was covered faithfully. It was done by a Tribute Act 5 years ago but they changed it. This is true to the original. I hope you enjoy this “challenge” of a sort. After I see this survives posting I’ll go to pp and refer to this comment in “Touch Me”

I was 14 in 1970 when I bought the Close To You album. So I go way back or I’m just old, 🤣❤️. I’m going to go edit out the amount to keep it private.

She sounds great, but yes, she was very ill here. They were very careful about how they dressed her onstage to cover up her illness.

Hi Dani: Such a wonderful song, yet it never became the hit the Carpenters and A & M execs expected. She was a lot more animated singing this song on the Merv Griffin show, with Olivia Newton John. The recorded version is far better, being vocally and musically augmented. Happy New Year!

She's clearly struggling to find the breath. So so sad. And yet her voice still sounds so pretty as it's not chord related, she just has no power to project or sustain.

She went into the hospital about a year later and managed to gain 30 lbs. Sadly, the effects on her heart was too much.

yes, this live performance truly showed off her physical decline and yes, her voice was affected. Struggling to it the high notes, and lack of richness, even to the point of being almost "off key".... One wonders if she and Richard realized this and didn't think to lipsynch unless the French show didn't allow this. She and Richard valued her voice so much, hard to believe that neither didn't see or hear what was going on. SAD....
And her vouce is very frail...her Mother was at fault!!
She died so young in Feb 1983 at the age of 32 due to complications from anorexia.
