- TESLA founder Elon Musk has unveiled a a hulking bulletproof truck that can go 500 miles on a single charge.
But the chief executive was left red-faced when the so-called armoured glass was smashed by a metal ball during a live demonstration...

He answered like a true programmer: Well, It worked on my machine
Three things here: 1) the engineers knew that the glass on the vehicle would break, which is why they did the drop test to allow the glass more surface area and wiggle room to absorb the impact; 2) the engineers had no idea Musk would then ask them to throw the ball at the vehicle glass; and 3) Musk took zero part in the testing, design, or assembly, otherwise he would have known about 1) and 2).
The official reason given was that when they hit the door with the sledgehammer previously it must have cracked an edge which is much easier to do and weakened the rest of the glass
@whatzituya55 they did that on the other window too?
Sources please. Because what I heard straight from elon in an interview is that the believe the sledgehammer hitting the door caused the base of the window to shatter, and compromised the strength of the window. So please provide me with sources to the "real" story. Until then I'll assume the high likelihood scenario where you just pulled that out of your ass and stated it as fact.

well windows in cars are designed to pop out when you kick it anyways. Most recent car windows won't just shatter into a million pieces

I hope the mini satellites are tested before another disaster
The first Starlink mission consisted entirely of test satellites. That will have given them a lot of useful test data (60 satellites worth).
You also cannot think of Starlink in the same way as traditional satellites - failure is an option here. The cost per satellite is extremely low, and the launch costs also are increasingly lower. When you're dealing with things at scale like with Starlink, the economics completely changes how you can do things.
starlink's first tests already started ruining astronomical observations for ground-based telescopes

@@purpledancer8255 So you have to be careful not to break your unbreakable car? The glass pane in test videos is laying out. The pressure causes it to flex and move slightly, and it doesn't shatter or break. But when installed in the window it is held in place, basically causing the force to be limited in it's ability to radiate out from an impact.
