Tears of the Kingdom is a sequel after all, so you can't expect the entire game to feel completely new, but I still found a lot of the optional content in this game pretty boring, which is why I made this video

This entire game doesn’t feel like a sequel. They just rewrote BotW, used false advertising when marketing it and slapped a higher price tag just for two more map layers. This game is as much a “sequel” as Galaxy 2 was for Mario. The only games I’ll say Nintendo legit counts as “sequels” is Splatoon

Tears of the Kingdom went too big. They remixed the surface, added sky islands, created an underworld, and a revolutionary physics system. They did too much, leading to the surface feeling repetitive, the sky feeling copy paste, the depths empty, and ultra hand not being utilized very much. They should’ve toned it down and focused on making each piece of content amazing, rather than creating many pieces of content.

Spot on. It was a quantity-first mindset, and I feel they dispensed with conservation of detail and mechanic cohesion right out of the gate. This is also exactly what happened what happened with Zelda II back in the eighties. They went way too big and did way too much to try to outdo the first one.

No silly, the game doesn't _force_ you to. So, you're wrong - you *don't have to* unless you want a ton of extra weapon slots. Again which is upto you and that you don't even need so much in this game vs the previous one.

@kickingbackpunchingcones4099 No it doesn't lol. Casual players? Fine: the game isn't a timed Mario Kaizo run jeez lol. It caters for all Skill levels. They can chill in this game too, their skill and efforts are reflected in the level of Enemies that spawn in the overworld: so please don't try that one. 🙄 And whatever happened to a game Upskilling players? Thats why you're encouraged to explore, fight and gain back your Master Sword. It's a Zelda game, remember?

      @netweed09 Před 3 měsíci

@kickingbackpunchingcones4099 Ok - but that's not the games fault, is it? And I did post a little micro-guide in reply to you in how 'casuals' can get the best start but for some strange reason it was removed. Yes, Tears is tougher than Breath at the start because Hylian weapons are now rusty - but hey, We wanted a tough Zelda game (besides Breath) for the 1st time in 15+ years and now we complain? 🙄 The key is to get the Master Sword early , the games secret shortcut.

You see, I milked BotW, and could not finish TotK, the game was making feel fatigued, I played it for like two weeks when it came out and honestly I was forcing myself the whole time, the more I explored the more annoyed I was getting, today I decided to give it another try and quit within 5 mins, maybe one day I get to finish it but for now it will stay on my shelf.
Edit: BTW I beat Link’s Awakening this week for the first time since I had a GBC and man it was amazing, I really want Zelda to go back to its roots, 10-12 classic dungeons instead of a sea of emptiness with a few cutscenes.

I completely agree as I've spent hundreds of hours playing BOTW and nearly finished it to 100%. I honestly stopped playing TOTK after just one week and it's a damn shame because I really tried to like the game. There's a huge lack of innovation, and everything felt like a lousy replication of BOTW in all aspects. I mean for Christ's sake, they even let you re-use the same horses from BOTW too.. All of the main & side quests felt like a chore, and there are simply way too many places to explore which felt tedious and mentally draining. I still think TOTK is a decent game, but I can't justify spending my time doing the same repetitive tasks over and over again. I never thought I'd say this, but TOTK is the first Zelda game that felt underwhelming and boring.

Honestly that's what happened with me and BOTW. Then, when TOTK came out I knew it would be good but I didn't buy it. True open world like these games tend to be is just too much time investment for me as an adult, I have work to do and people to see. Like I love a game that's long. Miitopia being one of those that's in my all-time favorites, I go all the way to final post-game every time I start a new save over months of playing an hour here or there. I have 190 hours of the port logged cumulatively on my switch, and I haven't even gotten halfway through all the content I want to cover in my second playthrough (not accounting for my full playthrough 3DS copy either). But if there's no goal I'm progressing towards, I lose motivation because it becomes a time sink that's bad for my real life. I liked messing around in BOTW fighting Lynels or doing a random quest/shrine, but never touched most of the insane amount of content the game offers. Still had the best weapons and other stuff. It just feels empty after that point though because I was so overpowered that I could just beat the game without shrines or koroks anyways. Makes it feel like the extra exploration doesn't really matter I guess. I don't want to play a game just to fill hours of time, I want to experience something new with a good narrative that's enjoyable to play. And I think that's why the open world direction many games have been taking isn't my cup of tea personally. It's all just a backdrop to world exploration and mechanics gyms, which leads to uneven progress and heavily disjointed narratives. This is one situation where choices in games are just too open ended for the average player IMO. That all being said though TOTK and BOTW are probably objectively some of the best games of all time in terms of their features and moving parts. Just not for a game player who has other commitments and fun hobbies to explore. Thanks for reading if you got this far, I'm a paragraph andy and happy to be one :)

I ran the game for about 89 hours already because I am too hooked to put it down because it's my first time to play that vast open world game! I am so excited but I realised I'm already an adult. I have more important things to do. I miss being a kid. I've grown to a poor family and the only thing that I had before was a Famicom way when it's not trending anymore and a gameboy gift by our relatives to my brother but that's it. Definitely a shared experience downloading free stuff to computers to still experience some older games that were past my time even as a kid. That's something that people don't consider too, gaming is such an expensive hobby and prices can inflate quite high in certain countries. I'm a game dev so it's something I have to keep in mind when it comes to looking at how games or consoles are priced. It takes a lot for full-time workers to find the energy/time to play games and that's something we also look at too. It can really drain you, and as a result heavy investment games like BOTW/TOTK can be difficult to really get into all the way. Do the shrines, get the Korok seeds, same art style, same map with some extras, same characters, same method of story telling, etc. Breath of the Wild felt fresh because it was so different from other open world games. But since then, there has been plenty of open world games and a general fatigue has set in from all these open world games. I am now craving for a tight level design and more linearity because frankly I don’t have the kind of time I used to just fuck around the map in a game only for the reward to be underwhelming. Also, recently purchased a PS5 and realised just how behind Zelda is in terms of graphics and performance. Performance more than the graphics honestly. Like you said in the video, I can deal with 30fps but drops below that are annoying and kill the fun.

Botw was not so different form other open world games.
It was the same, with more issues if compared to others.
For example, a game that wants to be about exploration keeps you to the ground as much as it can, it doesn't let you consume the map by flying everywhere. Also, static enemies are not for an open world of this kind, with all this freedom of movement.
Morover, there is nothing really special to find in the world, nothing really interesting, except for a few things.
People often complain about ubisoft open world games but they are far superior in everything.
My favorite games are open world games, and I really wanted Zelda to go in that direction.
However, when I played botw it did not feel fresh to me, nor different, nor better in any way.
      I was quite dissppointed.

I stopped playing TotK halfway through. Everything felt so repetitive and 60% of what I played was boring grind. Similar to BotW, the enemy variety is soooooo bad (main reason I stopped playing), the music is a joke compared to older Zelda games, the open-ended structure of the game destroys any sense of satisfying progression.
The story is corny and badly written, the caves after a while felt exactly the same, The Depths was an empty place with nothing interesting going on, and I had much higher hopes for the sky islands.
Also, I despise how the game's prologue has such a captivating dark, eerie vibe (my favorite type of ambience) only for that vibe never again to be seen for the rest of the game. I can't emphasize how embarrassing and incompetent it was for the developers to have created this awful inconsistency in tone.
My dream Zelda game: There's a satanic cult that worships Majora. They're initially in Termina, but learn about the powers of the Triforce, so their mission is to steal the Triforce to resuscitate Majora.
The Triforce in this timelines has for generations been passed down the royal bloodline, so Zelda has the full Triforce. The cult learns about this, and throughout the game, the cult is hunting Zelda, trying to kill her and steal the Triforce imbued in her.
Link and Impa are given the mission, by the king, to protect Zelda (this is our main trio. Zelda, Impa, and Link should've always been that, can't believe that it hasn't happened yet officially).
To keep the Triforce safe, Zelda decides to split it. Link gets the Triforce of courage, Zelda gets the Triforce of power (she has immense magical powers that originate in her strong, sacred bloodline), and Impa, coming from a secret society of esoteric knowledge (the Sheikah), gets the Triforce of wisdom.
This game returns to its roots, being heavily inspired by European architecture, Christian mythology, European folklore and folk music.
There are tons of hidden churches (similar aesthetic to Temple of Time and real-life churches across Europe) scattered throughout the map, each of them has a corresponding underground dungeon filled with scary enemies, such as redeads, ghosts, ancient giants etc.

One of the main problems is that there's just too much stuff with no clear indicator what is and isn't worth doing. When I need a guide just to sift what sidequests are worth my time and what will just reward me with some food and rupees, it really just ruins the game for me. It was time consuming enough to go for the shrines, finding Koroks, dragon tears and qll that stuff so i rarely bothered with any of the side quests because my hands were already full. I'm sick of playing it and yet I feel like I've barely scratched the surface, and I ended up just looking up on thr Internet how to get to Ganondorf after finding the fifth sage because I really don't want to do any more tedious exploration in the depths for Josha. I just want to get it over with.

Definitely a huge mod, but still a mod. The story massively let me down too. I’m a story-focused player and TotK didn’t deliver a good story. BotW at least had an interesting narrative for the past, but TotK just felt… wrong. It didn’t feel like it had an impact on the story of today’s world. How many times did the Calamity get mentioned in TotK? The main plot of BotW? None. Not once. It felt like a bunch of thoughts thrown together and none of them really felt collected. I feel like a lot of people have started to realize this. I’m seeing more and more, “Why TotK was not as good BotW,” videos now. It rubbed me the wrong way, as if my accomplishments in BOTW meant nothing. I understand why they did this. They didn't want newcomers being confused and feel the need to do "homework". Why make a sequel then if the story and especially worldbuilding is gonna be this disconnected?
Gameplay didn't grab my attention either unfortunately. The team absolutely pushed the engine to its limits, I commend them for that. However, they forgot to do the same for gameplay. Any issue I had involving BOTW's gameplay is still here, untouched if you could say. The Zonai hand imo is not as fun as the Shiekah Slate. I played hundreds of hours of BotW and TotK may surpass that into near 1000. The world isn’t just a place I like to spend time in and I like to take my time with side quests and stories and reading into lore and putting the micro stories together in my mind. I think it’s crazy how many videos of criticism there are. The main story is great and I’m glad they gave content that makes the game endlessly replayable almost but not quite as much as Skyrim. I just think having a large game and filling it to the brim with literal 100s of hours of meaningful substantial top tier content is unrealistic. The main quest is the meat and potatoes for critical path. Everything else is for people who love the world and exploring without needing a waypoint to direct them to do every small taste.
