  • One of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's most popular characters, Kass, did not return to the hit game's sequel. In Tears of the Kingdom, Kass is nowhere to be seen, not named at all, and only subtly referred too. However, the tragic reason behind his disappearance has been staring us in the face this entire time, and I uncovered the true reason why Kass isn't around in Tears of the Kingdom.
    In this video, I solve one of the biggest mysteries in Tears of the Kingdom: Where is Kass?

    The Rito not expecting Kass to return to the village after the storm clearing up could also be explained by him leaving on a journey before the Upheaval, so he was already gone and wouldn't be expected back yet.
    My favorite theory is that Kass was going to be used to set the DLC that they decided not to do. He was heavily associated with the BotW DLC and the way Penn's story ends really suggested we were going to get more Kass imo.

    I think there's a theory that Kass is also a tropical Rito so he's not originally from the Hyrulean Rito tribe. He's a type of macaw so his constant traveling could be explained due to that. There's also a chance that his wife and all of their children were aware that he'll eventually leave Hyrule for an extended amount of time.

    You might be on to something here. I walked into this video thinking that Kass was off exploring other places, but the tone the game has towards him is a bit somber.
    This is just me theorizing, but to me, it seems like the developers wanted to embracer darker themes in the game and ended up walking it back. I wouldn't at all be surprised if they initially intended for Kass to more explicitly having died due tot he catastrophe, and then walking it back but leaving some of the dialogue in place.
    While they have stated they won't be doing DLC, I hope we get a directors cut of the game for Switch 2 that has a little more stuff in it.

    • @Hanakothemizumiko
      @Hanakothemizumiko Před 3 měsíci +22

      The walking back on darker themes seems possible, the fandom loves to forget the game got developed in the middle of *global pandemic* that killed a lot of people, they might have thought the story of the game would hit too close to home if they kept the deaths resulting from a nationwide catastrophe. Considering how anime originals outright cancel darker episodes if they happen close to tragedies, I wouldn't be surprised if that was indeed the case

    • @thijsdeboer6968

      Zelda does mention in the beginning that people have become sick because of the gloom. There's also that one quest in Kakariko where someone got sick from the gloom. I think it's quite likely that the gloom sickness was supposed to be more substantial, but because of Covid they decided to remove most of it.

      NDA's may have kept Nintendo from saying they are planning on DLC's I cant tell you how many games I have played where the developers say they have no plans for more and then end up releasing more. Most times I think this sort of misdirection is fronted to the public to get the snoops and stress off the developers backs so they can just make what they want without a supposed deadline.

    • @failurextreme7084
      @failurextreme7084 Před 3 měsíci +3

      Ironically, my main reason for thinking this isn't true is that it's not somber enough. If Kass was around (not journeying elsewhere) and disappeared, I'd definitely expect him to be brought up in mourning at least once. Especially once Link shows back up, he was Links friend after all. You'd think someone would say something directly to Link about it.

    One of my major issues with TotK is that it's suppose to be a sequel, but it heavily leaves out a lot of stuff from BotW, even the major things like Kass and doesn't continue upon plots or characters from BotW unless they're major, but even then Sages are pretty eh, Sidon/Yunobo were better written in BotW. We can only theorize, when the game should just give us answers to due to it being a sequel.
    It almost makes it feel that TotK is it's own alternate universe from BotW with how it's set up.

    • @FortyTwoBlades
      @FortyTwoBlades Před 3 měsíci

      That's because, to a degree, it is! Zelda's travel to the past and telling the first king of Hyrule about events in her time like the Calamity influenced current events. While this technically doesn't make sense if you really break it down, time travel and its influence on the continuity have never worked logically in the LoZ franchise, and so it's like the Calamity still happened but in a vestigial way like some kind of time-echo. It's the reason all of the ancient Sheikah devices are just...gone, including the Guardians and Divine Beasts. Zelda surely told Rauru all about it and they were like "Oh we should make sure to leave a record for people later to NOT bother building those." But we do still have the ONE Guardian strapped to the top of the Akkala lab. Many have theorized that the Guardian remains were all cannibalized to make the Skyview Towers, but many of the remains were in VERY remote locations and there were simply so many of them that they would have had a lot left over if this were the case. It seems as though, due to Zelda's use of time magic with the Secret Stone, she caused a weird limbo timeline where the Calamity "happened but simultaneously also didn't."

    I agree, but with one small correction. all the rito know the song of the stormwind ark and talk about it like an old tale they all grew up hearing, even the adults. they talked about it and reacted in disbelief at the idea of it being real in the same way we all would over say, the tooth fairy. some of the kids still believe in it, but most see it as nothing more than a fairy tale told to children. Kass wouldn't have been the one to discover it and teach it to everyone if all the adults also grew up with it. I think it's more proof of why Kass was so drawn to the songs of his teacher. musical legends is a deep part of rito culture that he just couldn't resist. and when shit started happening, and he remembered how all the songs he learned really did have meaning, he like everyone else looked at the storm and remembered the stormwind ark, which in the absence of his friend and Hyrule's hero, made him make his own attempt at following the song's guidance only to be hurt by the winds too strong for him, or possibly attacked on his way by a suddenly much stronger monster, and lost his life there. and I'm betting no one has the heart to tell Link he's gone. or, they're so focused on everything else, they forgot that no one told him. (that happened to me with a neighbor. I'd been gone to a con all weekend and one day asked my neighbor where her husband was bc by the time we got back it was "old news" and no one realized we didn't know. thankfully she wasn't offended or anything but it sure was a shock to us both!)

Before I knew Kass had a family I was begining to think Kass was a ghost connected to the Shrines we did know he was taught by a Shikea, that he would only appear to guide us to shrines, and that he somehow had the legendary picture in the DLC. But now that I know he has a family your therory makes more sense. Still I hope Tears of the Kingdom does get a DLC where Kass is only trapped somewhere when he investigated the blizzard.

    In a way it does make sense that Cass would have made it his own mission to investigate the stormwind arc, especially if link was gone for several weeks or months. I would imagine that Cass would have been one of the few people who would know almost immediately that link and Zelda were gone (given that he can just fly to visit the two of he wanted), and since link is a puzzle solver and taught cast how to solve many of the puzzles found in Cass's past songs, Cass probably thought that it would be a good idea to solve the stormwind Arc puzzle himself.
    I believe that the cannons at the side of the ark were the ones that ended up doing cass in, or any of the factory constructs. Maybe it wasn't even either of those and he just died because he is a bird and birds have hollow bones 😔

    That's my biggest pet peeve with Totk... There's just so many ridiculous inconsistencies that they just simply didn't care enough to answer. Where's Kass? Ah I dunno. Where'd the guardians go? They just disappeared. The Divine Beasts? Them too. How? Uhhh... I dunno. There's just no answers and its really stupid. If I didn't know better I'd say this is a completely different timeline. But that _can't_ be possible because they directly reference the events of Botw many times. Even the Champions (which were talked about frequently in Botw, even in the modern day) are rarely ever acknowledged or mentioned outside of Mipha, who got lucky.

      Lol that sounds a little too convoluted and unbelievable to be plausible. It's far more realistic that due to the changing of the seasons (Spring in BotW and Summer in TotK) Kass was forced to _migrate_ to another region of the world where the weather was more suitable for his body. This explains why Amali and her children have absolutely nothing to say regarding their husband's status been fully aware he migrated to another land until the Summer was over and he could finally return once the weather became temperate again.

    Also, have you checked under every one of the fallen boulders for a pair of bird feet? _Those dang things falling from the sky are dangerous!_

    Shrine quests in TOTK are SO BORING, 90% of them is just retrieving some green rock to an altar.
    The whole time I was solving these I missed Kass quests more and more.
    Ngl, Kass is what I missed the most from BOTW, hearing him in the distance was a pleasure cuz it meant there was something interesting in that direction, him playing at the stables made them cozier too.
    They could at least have him be part of the stable trotters.
    The fact they brought back EVERY NPC from the previous game EXCEPT Kass baffles me, more than that, I actually get angry just thinking about it.

    Nintendo said we were done with this version of Hyrule, but they never said we were done with this version of Link. It’d be cool if we got another sequel where Link travelled to another land kind of like how Majoras Mask was the same link from ocarina of time. Then they’d probably want a character or 2 from botw/totk hyrule to make a cameo as a nice little Easter egg. Maybe they intentionally kept Kass out of the game while being vague about where he is with that in mind.

    I don't think Kass is dead. It's hard to be sure because Nintendo clearly didn't keep canon tight. Bolson doesn't know who you are, despite Hudson having built tarry town.
    But it's strange that none of the Rito would tell you Kass vanished or died. Assuming you did Champion's Ballad, you would be very close to Kass and also therefore familiar with his family. You would have saved Rito village once before. Why wouldn't they tell you that something happened to him?
    My guess is that he left rito village, either to try to find the Stormwind Ark, or some info about it; or before everything went down. Penn talks about him like he doesn't know where he went, and Penn operates close enough to Rito village that he should have heard if the legendary bard went missing or died there. Imo all signs point to the fact that Kass left before shit went down.

Did his book fell off the sky and his wife just found it laying around? Doesn't makes much sense for him to die in the storm and then letting his family know about it, followed by no one mentioning his disappearence afterwards.

      @@thomazplays9305 Well, the song had existed since ancient times. So my thinking is Kass was aware of the song. Doesn’t have to be before or after the blizzard. He connects the dots that the legend offers a solution and that the Ark is probably up in the storm. He goes to track it down and….
      Point being, he was almost assuredly aware of the song before heading out in search of the ark. Otherwise I don’t think he would’ve gone looking for it. In BotW, Kass knew the song, and the place it referred to. Same story here
