- Mike Leigh on the making of his film, Secrets & Lies, during Human Conditions: The Films of Mike Leigh, moderated by FLC Assistant Programmer Dan Sullivan. Our retrospective continues through June 8! Get tickets: www.filmlinc.org/series/human...
The acclaimed winner of the 1996 Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or, Mike Leigh’s mid-’90s masterpiece cemented his status as the poet laureate of modern family life. The story concerns Cynthia (Brenda Blethyn, awarded Best Actress at Cannes), a working-class white woman whose personal and interpersonal lives are transformed when she learns that a Black optometrist is the child she gave up for adoption 27 years prior. Created, like Leigh’s other films, after long months of intensely collaborative improvisation, Secrets & Lies is remarkable for its lived-in warmth and humor, and above all for its unflinching honesty in capturing the everyday evasions and deceptions that can define our lives. An NYFF34 selection. 2K Restoration. A Janus Films release.

No film has had more of an impact on my life than Secrets & Lies. “We’re all in pain, why cant we share our pain” hit me like a hurricane of bricks.
Young person here to say I just watched Secrets & Lies for the first time last night and now I’m here because I was blown away. Of course, he usually blows you away, but wow.
I love what Leigh said about "character actors." They are the heart of all film. In the US we seem too stuck on stars, in GB and elsewhere the character actor is the star and as humans, we can relate to them because we all know someone like them- or even see a bit of ourselves. Bravo Mike Leigh!
Secrets & Lies is a masterpiece - I went to see it when it first came out with my half brother when we had only met for first time in my 20s - I had just introduced him to his mum that week - it was a very moving and helpful film to understand all the dynamics and layers of this highly emotive situation - phenomenal acting and directing
i'm so proud that mike leigh is from round are way❤️
