Reno Unlimited Gold Race 2015 with Voodoo mayday landing.

- The final Gold race of the 2015 National Championship Air Races is in the books, Robert 'Hoot' Gibson slowly pulled away from the group as Rare Bear clawed her way passed Voodoo due to engine trouble for the second place spot.
I left the whole mayday sequence to show how skillfully Steve controlled a potential deadly situation. Voodoo will be back and stronger than ever!!

Amazing how British engineering is partially key to this competition, greetings from Italy.
Listen to it! I'd been to a bunch of airshows and heard the beautiful sound of a Merilin a few times before but when I went to Reno years ago and heard the sound of a Merlin being pushed hard it was a little frightening. I love seeing'hearing them at the airshows and i really hope we'll all be seeing/hearing them 50 years from now! Wow what music!
Well it's a Rolls-Royce, what else would you expect!
Put the guns back in for a really interesting race lol
That would we fun
Paintball plane matches
That would be a truly spectacular show
Take the guns off the people. M.
@@rovercoupe7104 heeehooohahahahahaeheheehehheehhhohohohohhohahahahahaa
Never mind formula one, the sound of these babies screaming past made my hair stand on end lol
Formula 1, does anyone still watch that? lol
Yes I know, and also the engines got a lot less exciting.
@Cameron Putt cant wait for 2021 tho.
I LOVE the sound of these old planes... Just freaking awesome.
To me there are nothing in the world that sounds this good I know jets are faster ect but you will never get this kinda of sounds
they all have swapped engines but yeah, they sound super nice
Same
We lost Bob Hoover this year, just before his 95th birthday, RIP, greatest pilot ever! We will never forget his 500RA show, with both engines feathered the last 5 minutes!!
Michael Larkin Me neither, that was an awesome performance. He will be missed.
That's very sad to hear. Bob Hoover was an absolute gentleman and the perfect pilot. I don't think he ever called them "planes" or "airplanes", ... it was always "aircraft."
In the early 1970s I was a radio announcer for a local FM station that broadcast the races, live, in stereo (!!). The listeners loved it.
An extraordinary stick and rudder pilot .
A couple of years ago, someone in a warbird called in a mayday and they naturally put Hoover on the radio to take care of business.
First I saw Bob Hoover fly the Shrike was at Rockford. I was a little boy
Most EXCELLENT, Jason! Thank you!
Pausing for a moment to comment on the great video quality !! Much appreciated, good stuff.
Merlin--perfect name for this incredible, astounding engine- kudos to the designer
Luckily, Voodoo made it down safely. Always have happy landings!!
Awesome job as usual, Jason! Your video is better than the whole NBC show ever wanted to be!
Excellent moi !!🌠🛩️
Beautiful landing under what looked like engine-out conditions. Great sideslip/crabbing to lose altitude and get to the right glideslope, and perfect crab kick at the end to get it down and level. Even coasted it off the runway and out of the way. Awesome piloting, far more so than what's required to win a race - getting a crippled racer down like that is a serious feat. Attaboy!
Makes me wonder why so many small aircraft crash simply because of engine failure.
It’s not hard you get hammered with engine out landings when you’re learning to fly , you’ll never be able to solo unless you can do a tidy engine out landing and execute a decent side slip to lose altitude in a hurry it’s not difficult
@@spannaspinna Way too many pilots take these drills for granted and sudden loss of engine power when you're flying a racing plane is a bit of a different beast than when your C172 engine quits - deceleration forces are stronger and you're far lower altitude. That's a more difficult recovery to execute, and this pilot ran a clinic on dealing with a low-altitude engine-out situation.
@@ArchTeryx00 yes but you also have a lot of airspeed which can be readily converted to altitude , altitude buys time and options
@@spannaspinna Yep and that's exactly what he did. Plus, the one advantage of being in a race is that you're right next to the airfield. If you can get altitude enough to glide, you have plenty of time to get lined up and take it in. Plus (IIRC) the race is yellow-flagged if someone loses an engine and resumed when they are clear of the course.
Over two decades ago, I went to my first air race. Never seen one since. Let me tell you, being 5, or so, years old seeing these war birds racing through the air left one hell of a lasting impression! The Mustang is my all time favorite ever since I first heard it fly fast and low during that first turn. Such an amazing sight and sound!
I may only be an automotive mechanic, but I know an unhappy motor when I hear one lol
In a few other vids, I saw Voodoo streaming all that coal going down the chute and I thought that didn't look good. Congrats to "Hoot" and the Strega team. Great coverage of the races, I really enjoy your vids.
We live on the other side of the mountains from the Reno air races location. We drive over the hills in my Jeep and watch the show every year.
I picked an area were the jets make their turnouts. They get pretty low in that spot. I've taken some really great photos over the years. Even got many pilots to wave back.
Best one was we got buzzed by two F22's just skimming the tops of the little trees out there, the roar was so loud thought they'd crack the windows in my Jeep.
Great video.
Kid Goku Dang that is pretty sweet!
I'd totally be doing the same thing if I lived just over the hill from the Reno Air Races!!!
And I love the F-22's....
You lucky bastard! :D
Post your vids..
YOU'RE STILL Da' Absolute BEST..!
10 X BETTER Than NBC My FRIEND..!
Damn I miss going to the air races! Head to head racing not only proves how quick you are but how good of a pilot you are. When the unlimiteds fly to the starting point you can feel the hum inside you. I highly recommend it for anyone who is a plane or racing buff. You'll love it. Oops, pit passes are a must if you're going to make the trip. ✌️♥️
I'm in love with the mustang, that old war bird just make my heart sing when I see one. Thank you for taking us up, of only on camera.
Excellent! Totally under control! Nice job!!!
Ils sont tout aussi splendide les uns et les autres quelle course! Merci pour ces petites bombes vidéo rapide!!!
Man! Those are just the sickest sounds 😎
well...aniway maybe the most beautifull show on earth....Awesome 'n more!!!!!!
Amazing plane and great footage!
Bob Hoover Hero WWII, test pilot, airshow pilot , Hoot, astronaut and fellow RC modeler, Hinton great aviator flies them all.
I flew dogfights in WWII . . . umm . . . on my computer, and watching her take those turns at low altitude had me all tensed up. Plus the problem of being aware of where all the other planes are so you don't collide. This is some serious flying. And I love the sound!
nice to hear a smooth V12 running along all these brutal radials !
aces on the landing, aces on the edit! 👍
My mum was in London in the war. We were in a café last year near Sywell airdrome, Spitfires were practicing overhead. The sound brought back her nightmare memories of mothers running with their children for the bomb shelters. She was reduced to tears by it all. Terrible.
Saw this in 1970. My, how time flies.
Outstanding video! Best air race video I've seen! Sure do miss the old timers like Rare Bear, Dago Red, Strega, Voodoo, &c. Just found your Rare Bear / Dago Red video. Gonna watch it now...
6:18 music to my ears
What always blows my mind almost as much as the speed these planes are achieving with piston engines, is the speeds they are achieving at Reno Stead's altitude. It would also be interesting to get an actual reading of residual thrust from the exhaust.
That sounds sexy. p.s.: I'v been to a number of Reno shows.
Wonderful.
Esto si es fórmula1!!!! Que aviones más bonitos......Son una pasada🛩️🛩️🛩️🛩️🛩️🛩️🛩️🛩️🛩️🛩️🛩️🛩️🏴🏳️🏴🏳️🏴🏳️🏴🏳️🏴🏳️🏴🏳️🏁🏁
Imagine flying that beast.
Awesome.
A challenging landing well done.
Radial engines are dry sump. At low rpm the oil pump cannot keep the oil from building up in the engine. The last run up is to scavenge the oil from the sump. At least that is what it was for in the T-28 I flew in Navy flight school in the early '70s.
That's what exactly what I was going to ask.
Thank you Sir.
That is exactly what I was going to ask !
Thank you Sir !
I like the way throttle them up at the end to clear out the engine from idling down the runway. It would truly feel good to fly one of those race planes.
Trying to learn more.... so the rev up to clear out junk from the engine???
Also, nice side slipping to a landing at 11:00 with full flaps ! Nice flying!
It was one hell of a slip considering he was probably trying to bleed off speed, that he had to keep should he end up going in dead stick.
Pilot awareness 💯
Right!!!
I actually thought all aircraft had to line up straight far in advance of the runway!! This is incredible!!
Looove the sound of a screaming Merlin!!! Fantastic
SUPER, THX i enjoy it.
Nice landing in a tense situation.
Magnificent.
Once again, just brilliant work Jason!!!!!
"Voodoo will be back and stronger than ever!!".....and she was. 2016 Voodoo won Unlimited Gold, uh, but Strega wasn't in the race because she had been sold, and Rare Bear wasn't there (I don't honestly think it would have mattered since young Steve actually was beating the Bear in 2015 before Voodoo had issues, but Bear is a FAST plane and always a contender).
Hats off to Steve Hinton for bringing this one back deadstick. I understand it is way more difficult to do than the PC pilots make out!! Awesome of Dad to ride herd too. I was fortunate to have been present for this event, and it's real neat to see such a young guy be so competitive in this sport!
~S
Robert Mantell till strega stole it from him with awesome diving pass after voodoo had to go wide to avoid a lapper. Go strega.
""GUDJOB young Lil Mr. HINTON ""
aweshome. that was scary 10:00 keeping enough lift to the wings with the motor rattling to land whew.
right on the centreline...
The p51 is one of the most beautiful planes ever created
GRAND ! Gave me fukn chills..best thing on Earth..
Steve is an awesome pilot. can't wait to see him fly in this years reno air race. hope you'll do the same camera angle as this video. Greetings from Luxembourg, Western Europe
But your in the United Kingdom now.
Im impressed. Your everywhere.
I bet every person commenting is from the UK.
I guess you are CZcams. I guess CZcams is dead and you are running it for them.
I guess you better kill me before I tell everyone I haven't told already.
Seriously man the guys here in Croydon are gonna be pissed.
Steve Hinton (Sr) is Da Man !
For being in a constant turn incredible speeds
Que apresentação Fantástica !!!!! É muito bom ver essas máquinas maravilhosas em pleno funcionamento.
Muito obrigado pelo vídeo e parabéns pelo canal.......
Grande abraço do Brasil........
So much extra stress put on those P51 frames.
excellent video
Wow. That was an acute approach.
Amazing show of power and skill all rapped up in a short video.
Question: I don't know anything about air racing engines, why do they power up after they come to a stop. Have my guesses but I'd like to hear it from someone who knows.
My guess is that they're cleaning out any carbon and any engine contaminates from the idle in and to ensure oil pressure was up to fill the oil passages before shut down. Thanks for the post, Best Wishes n Blessings Keith

I would think that's what they're doing that for. I'm basing what I know on what they do for steam engines, which are radically different than these engines, but from what I know, if an engine is hard at work, regardless of what they run on, they'll do a relatively good job at keeping themselves clean.
Your guesses are spot on!
Wow! Just Wow!
I am a BIG fan of motor racing, particularly F1 and Le Mans, but this is the coolest. I'm going to Reno this year....
I can haz?
get in a week early and go to the airfield, it's pretty much open to anyone to walk in and check everything out as they get the planes ready. They close the place up to ticket holders a day or two before the races is all, so worth the trip out to just look planes over and talk to crew.
it this doesn't give you goosebumps,,, nothing will,, mechanical marvels
why do I feel like crying while watching these magnificent machines doing their thing
Camera angles are great 😉😀🤗
Out standing all yous shipmates.
I think he lost too much oil. Brillant Video!
I'm no flying enthusiast, but that was simply Bad Ass!
NOW THIS IS POD RACING!!!
Nifty flying Voodoo.
How many G forces in the turns ?
How high above the ground ?
Looking back on this, voodoo didn’t do too bad being down what looked like at least a cylinder. Saw you mentioned bad piston rings. Definitely came back strong when the team broke the world record!
SKill.!!!! Wow
I would like to see a longer course for them to fly so they can get wings level and really pour on the coals for a nice long straight away. But I can see why they have it like this for the fans. They're in a banking turn the whole race! Like Bristol vs Talladega Superspeedway.
SixStringLove Guy Actually they used to race on a larger course (9+ miles) but with all the encroachment of homes and businesses they had to slowly shorten the course. Plus with the crash in 2011 which took spectators lives, the FAA shortened it even more (thinking it would slow them down). But yes, it was awesome back in the day when they would drop down in the ‘valley of speed’ on the back side of the course with wings level and hall ass!!!
Me gusto el video soy fans de la aviacion
Melki Cede Thsnk you
omg the Sea Furys~
So in the end WWII really is the period at the end of the sentence. Really it's all just icing on the cake. A very old cake. PROP DRIVEN cake.
That a bit of a stretch... we grow fond of machines when they help us win a war but warplanes today would seem like sorcery in 1944, they are that much better.
madlarkin8: true ... but which is more entertaining to watch race at low altitude around pylons ??? these tweeked up 500mph prop planes or modern fighter jets??? The best cake is the one people like to eat.
All flight is fantastic! Jet, propeller, glider, rubber band, feathers it’s all great. Pity the person who cannot appreciate all forms of it. I even reveal when watching a close up slow motion movie of a bird in flight and see how all the feathers are constantly moving in order to maintain controlled flight, likewise with computer controlled aircraft.
The A 26 was use extensively during the Viet Nam war. I worked near the hangar where one was being repaired. I have personal knowledge of them operating in 1968.
Not super factual... do not confuse propeller-driven piston engine aircraft with turboprop, of which aircraft like the Dash 8, and Airbus A400M are some of the most advanced aircraft in the world, and most efficient for what they do. PS never been to Canada have you, where "lowly" propeller-driven Aircraft keep the north alive and fed. Day in and day out, with excellent reliability. Built solid and true.
You'll never get these crews to admit what went wrong with their bird. Other crew members can hear the problems pretty fast as all of them have experienced mechanical break downs before. Those popping sounds are hundred dollar bills being blown over the dessert floor.
Push engines to the limits of their ability and beyond, this is going to happen once on awhile. Too bad it happened to young Mr. Hinton that year.
Lol I remember watching him solo a P-51 at Chino, lo these many years ago.😆
My favorite single engine planes are the Mustang but I live all if them. Questiin though, once the planes have taxi'd in they throttle up for a bit, is this done to clear the ports and plugs of unburned fuel?
iceman22st Yes, you are correct.
i wonder if you can draft a prop powered plane just like in road racing? @9:16 u see the f8f wobble a little. looks like he is driving through the jet stream the leading plane created.
love those F8F bearcats
Vehicles are powered by wheels on the ground and the air only acts as drag.
Now think how aircraft are powered..
Nothing sounds better than an inline engine
Is that sMoke out of the engine at 7:08 - 7:15 ish?
Man, these people can fly a little bit. Watch Strega come in, at about 14:00. If that's not the most perfect smooth textbook landing you've ever seen... That, kiddies, is what it should look like, but almost never does.
Hoot has landed the Space Shuttle a few times, too. He's definitely a hell of a pilot.
Take planes that light and slick and with such low drag in what is pretty dry dense air at a reasonably high elevation and its pretty hard not to "nail" landings.
Dam. Been 12 years since I’ve heard those name. Strega,Hare Bear.
If a Mink coat made a sound, it would sound exactly like one of these Packhard/Merlin V-12s , at least while it (the engine) was still being properly lubricated.
Precision mechanical music, very nice !!! Who in the hell would on a poulan chainsaw anyway . Don't expect you to understand !!!
Cuda Kid Nope! You’re right, I don’t understand half your post. Try writing in English? .. or even American?
Just 👍
Thank you once again for another great presentation. Sounded like popcorn going off in the tail cam footage. Much damage to the engine?
That sound you're hearing is the engine being brought back to idle, these engines pop and backfire when the power is cut to idle during landing and sounds pretty cool from the ground!! If you watch my 'Warhawk Air Museum Warbird Roundup 2013' video and skip to the 11:45 spot you'll hear that to good effect!! The engine wasn't damaged too bad, just some parts needing replaced, it's at the shop being rebuilt and should be ready very soon!!
+Voodoo1650 Thankyou for the reply, I've only been lucky enough to have heard that from the ground once in my life so far. Planning a trip stateside next year and Reno will be on the agenda. Thank you once again from a lifelong aircraft fanatic.
The sound of those engines is pure sex. Forget Viagra. What it must have been like in WWII to hear DOZENS of these fighters, whether American, German, British or Japanese as the planes took off and rendezvoused for their missions...incredible.
To bad they retired Deggo. Red. Awesome Mustang.
Ww2 planes in races .__.
P51 mustang UTIMATE EDITION PAINT JOB
I'm sure Bernie has got it fixed by now!
Now how do I get to sit in the back seat while they are racing?
To all NASCAR fans and drivers out here this is how you do it.
I dunno man. In NASCAR you usually want to keep your vehicle glued to the track. Flying and banking usually end up in fiery and crippling crashes. I don't think this is how you do it at all.
R Diaz butler was making a joke... he’s saying that you don’t want to fly nascar cars cuz they explode😑
11:30 why the pilot is making pop corn during the flight?
When the engine sounds like rocks in a coffee can something's gone south.
Dropped a rod by the sounds of it.
how do you make sure everybody is on the mark im sure there was somebody about a foot ahead of the rest of the planes giving him an unfair advantage
The fastest I flown,is 650, one time in Lancaster.Ill never forget how I almost killed the owner or renter of the plane, because it was one of those that you pay for the hour, and he asked me if I could fly the plane, and I sure did, until I noticed he wasn't speaking any more,I was having the time of the day,I had waited since a kid to get my hands on one of this planes, and I didn't waste a second. The guy had passed out a few times,I was wandering why he wasn't telling me that it was time to go back, cause the half hour that I had payed for,was over.
11:38 saturn bomberman fight mami story
was that the jiffy pop plane?
How come si many furies end up doing this and where do they get the spare s?
I guess as they were so bloody fast from stock, and a fair few are around as they didn't see much combat besides the Korean conflict. No idea where they get spares though, perhaps they get new parts machined? Those Centaurus engines aren't known for being bulletproof...
Have you ever wondered why the Sea Furies aren't the dominant planes in the unlimited class? They were faster stock than both the Mustang and the Bearcat, and yet these are the two planes that dominate their class.
