It is clear, in hindsight, to see that this is where high-performance military aircraft were going to be in a few year's time. Hughes had Vision. He saw Ahead. He dreamed some amazing things into being, which often seemed likobjects from the near future. Which, in many ways, they were. Vought F4U Corsair, Grumman F6F Hellcat, Föcke-Wulf FW190, etc., all seem like branches of the same tree. Take a big-ass 2-row radial and work your way back, while considering the purpose of the aircraft. I love the H1 for it's purpose, which was, essentially, to be (your choice of expletive) fast, which led to such a pure, elemental shape. It's everything it has to be , and nothing it doesn't. The polished aluminium enhances the shape. If I'd have been one of the highly skilled individuals who built this aircraft, I'd be proud of my work. An unrepeatable, outrageous, breathtaking work of engineering, and an exquisite work of functioning art.
