- Zato-1 is one of the most fun, and most complicated characters in Guilty Gear Strive, but I'm here to help! If you're confused on how to play him, or how to fight him, then this is the video for you! We cover some advanced concepts in this video as well, but I want to go more in-depth on some of those advanced things in a future video, so stick around.

Every time I see Eddie my brain goes "Hehehe funny little man."
proper reponse mentally
Till he starts shitting on you
funny little clap :)
you don't understand how much I love this comment
as it should
I GOT ZATO TO 10F !! I know it’s not celestial but for a casual starting off with zato I feel really proud of myself
I’m now able to challenge celestial for the first time !!!!
@@matteyevee2333 update
@@funkuro broke my elbow and need surgery 👍got heaven then went to parks more for a more improvement mindset than just flowchart and win
@@matteyevee2333 damn dude. Congrats on getting to heaven, same thing happened with me, I’m currently improving really fast.
Good luck on that surgery! We need a celestial Zato out there.
Congrats!
I don't even play strive, I just love watching the animations lmao

My friend called it the tickle monster once and I love it, it's just really funny
*Stares into camera with a blank face*

"I once had some sweet memories..."
Thank you for this guide! Strive is my first Guilty Gear and Zato caught my eye but his unique playstyle was hard to learn by myself, so I will definitely be using this video and any future ones as reference for learning
One thing I noticed you forgot to mention: eddie's heavy slash (qcf hs) is essentially a moving perfect block that you can attack behind, meaning that when you're being pressured, you should always look for an opening to use it, as it is more than capable of starting your offense in the middle of the opponent's.
It says on the command list it works as a shield
when the beginners guide is nearly a hour ~let’s go
36:13 bro this point right here was genuine Rath happiness I love it.
Not gonna lie have been waiting for this guide to come out before putting any serious lab time into Zato. Cheers.
I needed this so much omfg Rath you actual god
Yooo Ankrusa!
yo fellow zato main??
i used to always watch your videos but then i forgot what your channel name was and i couldnt find any of your videos
now im just happy i checked comments to find you
As someone who saw Zato from the trailers a while back and thought this is who I am going to main cause he is just super cool, but when then dissuaded from the character because of the hardness, Thank you for this amazing video! You gave me a lot of insight on this character and helped me understand what I am supposed to do with him. He is so much fun and so rewarding to play and land what you practiced with him on people. You are awesome man keep up the quality content! Beware of the tickle monster!
This is the most fundamental, style-of-play guide for a character I have seen. Thank you so much. I'd love to see a follow-up and some suggestions to practice/drill for training.
Loved this guide! Really looking forward for the next one!
I knew this was coming and I'm so glad it's finally here. LOVE YOUR VIDEOS. You've inspired me to start doing guides as well. I hope there are many more to come
The humble beginnings of a Godlewis main
Ayyyy, year later and I used your guides for Happy Chaos, so I'm glad BOTH of you guys are around.
I'm only 7 minutes in and its already wonderfully explained, as someone wanting to learn Zato-1, it's super helpful and very well explained thus far.
Just picked up zato, perfect timing for a learning series
Thank you so much for this video, dude! You're hands down one of the best FGC content creators out there. I've been watching other Zato tutorials, but the format and presentation of this video made everything so much more clear and approachable. Explaining details like 5D into frog as opposed to 6K into frog in a general tutorial can really make a difference for new players!
This is one of the best FG guides ever. Amazing job, mate.
Your breakdowns and guides are fantastic. The way you explain game plans and the character’s goals is fantastic.
Fantasic guide :D really made me more confident in my zato. i loved how casual this was and how simple you presented the ideas. you also sounded really confident in everything you wanted to be a big point
Thank you for the informative video. As someone who has been a hard fan of fighting games for a decade now but only just started dedicating time to learn proper terminology and combos this has been helpful.
Hey man I still haven't watched the whole video (50 mins lol) but I want to straight-up thank you. Your guides are the absolute best in youtube in my opinion and Zato is my favourite character in Strive. Keep up the good work man, and market the shit out of thos video. Everyone deserves to watch this.
So keen to see the next part! Heaps to start learning
looking forward to the more advanced guide!
I've been waiting for this. The time has come
Dont usually comment, but thanks for this. Been waiting for a content creator I trust to overview him before I dove into learning. Big ups and love all your content in general.
Incredibly deep and educational video liked and subscribed!
Thank you for the time you spent teaching us beginners, I really appreciate it
This is so good, Thank you for that, very nice guide
Bro this was incredibly helpful for me, I really hope you get to that part 2 vid soon
Best zato basics guide on youtube! I'll wait for the next guide to pick him up, I'm still lost on gameplan/mixups
Keep up the great work man. Loving the content , im new to guilty gear and am learning a lot👏
There’s no way I can express my gratitude for this video. Great work, great understanding of the character. Feels like a masterclass haha
Update: I did main zato thanks to this man! Thank you again
Amazing video dude, I barely never post any comment on youtube but you really helped me a lot learning about my new main, thanks :)
Finallyyy, thank you man you’re the best🙏🏻
Your approach, your structure your delivery on this tutorial. Wow! Magnitudes of gratitude for what you do and how you do it bro! Learning my first GG through Strive. Also from AZ - shout outs btw!
+1 sub right chere'
Zato is literally the only guilty gear character that takes brain to use. This is why i love him plus his style
60iq take bud.
Zato is just so damn cool... Also this the bg music is such a vibe. Love this vid !
This is so helpful, holy hell. Thanks for showing Zato isn't the impossible to control beast people say he is!
Great video and effort, thank you very much!!
Been waiting for this!
I'm a real fan of the tickle monster. Also great tutorial! I'm understanding the character a bit better now.
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS! LETS GOOOO
Amazing video Rath, you’re the best as always. I still haven’t decided my main in this game but i’ll give Zato a closer look. Hope you’ll make other character guides. Keep going dude
Didja end up maining him?
@@Zedzilliot yup :) even tough i’m giving Jack-O a try today
Awesome job on the vid
unbelievable video every single guide maker should take notes
THANK YOU SO MUCH RATH
Thanks a lot for this guide this is awesome
Watching this first time without ever playing zato: wtf I just watched for 50 mins
Watching this after playing zato for one week: BRO THIS GUIDE IS LIT!
This was a great video. Thank you
Best guide on Zato I've seen! Can't wait for part two. How to establish pressure if the thing I'm really looking forward to -- feels like I get yee'ted 80 percent of the time lol.
This video helped me get so much better. I went into online matches after barely labbing, and dropped to like the 2nd floor💀. Im slowly making my way back up.
You too?
@@Reizouftvr yep
new gg player here. this is really helpful, thank you!
I'll learn how to play this guy no matter what. Thanks for the guide
As a Fukua main in skullgirls, picking up strive Zato really appealed to me. This video definitely made understanding how to play him a lot easier. Thank you ^_^
Let's goo the guide came out! 😂
thanks for doin this!
One thing that I like to do when using Zato is cancel Oppose into Oppose. I usually use this when I’m facing someone that is used to the timing of Oppose jus to confuse them a bit.
Your character breakdowns are always amazing. I'm planning on playing Zato in Strive and was just waiting for this to drop!
This is the only fighting game that I’m conflicted with who I want to play. I wanna play Zato-1 but also I wanna play Faust
play both
I main Zato-1 on pad, Good to see other Zato-1 mains! 👏
outstanding presentation of information thank you very much good sir
IMO you should've covered how 6P can sometimes clash if you're trying to counterpoke an opponent. Some moves have no hurtbox on the end of their moves (specifically talking about things like Ram f.S and 5HS with sword and May 5HS and f.S.) It would also be nice to show the 6P graphic so you could have an image to explain what you were talking about. The rest of this is good shit though, thank you.
Only reason you don't have 200k+ subs is because you don't upload constantly. Seriously the best youtube FGC content out there. Keep it up Rath 🤙
Coming back to this and realizing how much I forgot makes me wanna but the floor running. Need to pound the fundamentals into my head
Yessssss thank you Rath
First day on guilty gear. Let's go
thanks rath!
Best of luck to all aspiring Zato players : )
Thanks man
Came from fighterz always a dragon ball player. Picked up on zato after using Hit in the last game 👏🏻😌 I just love the complicated fighters. Very rewarding and way more fun.
Thanks rath
Reminds me of Zappa. Cant wait to try him out.
So I guess I'm going to learn Zato this weekend :D
Good luck
Thanks man
Damn, you're hella good at playing Zato! 🤯
This is great 👍
nice video rath!
Nice Guide
Super epic man 👍👍👍👍👍
Dude please make zato match up videos! That would be incredible
U that man I felt kinda lost playing him I knew I was working harder to get victory's than other characters
Thanks
RATH THIS IS IT, WHAT I HAVE WANTED FOR MONTHS, I LOVE YOU
It’s one of the my favourite chars and I very love his gameplay in GGXXACPR and in strive he got a MASSIVE moves cut, and I am not happy about this, but he is still cool and it’s good. Thanks for guide.
Thank you for this I just tried him out today I got a few W but more Ls🤣. Once he gets going he don’t stop but idk good combo starters
I got a game ad that narrated by Zato's VA. What a coincidence.
Zato is the coolest character in the game but he hurts my pea brain
Rath is the mvp for this godlike guide
Strive is the only game that makes me want to pick up a character cause of the music.
I also think he is cool :)
For those that want to map your inputs to the triggers: maybe you don't need to change all the buttons at once. You could change one normal that you can't do easily, like some of us did with Nero in DMC. It's better to mess up one button than all five.
Idk.. I think I would recommend getting used to holding and pressing weird buttons. I mean of course each to his own but I wouldn't want to mess with 18+ years of muscle memory to play one character.
I would say I'm a decent Zato player and the stuff I see pro players doing (which is the tech I incorporate in my game) don't require crazy weird button holds and presses with a few exceptions.
The most important uncomfortable thing I use while playing Zato is a wall carry pressure that requires me to hold (on PS) triangle, circle and press square. It wasn't easy at first but after a day or two practicing it I can do it 100% of the time. Another important thing is utilizing negative edge on neutral situations, like doing a drill and holding triangle to get the frog ready.
Aside from that and a few other very specific setups, most stuff can be done by just pressing the buttons. My tip is, watch guys like Ogawa and KnowKami play, put it on 0.25x speed and try to figure out when they're pressing or holding buttons. That will give you valuable info on when and how much you should probably be negative edging.
PS: Of course I'm talking about hard buttons to hold like circle and square at the same time. Buttons like holding circle while pressing triangle are pretty easy and Zato uses this a lot.
@@Ocean5ix Oh, i agree. My comment was for those who don't mind doing that. But if you think you can play with the default settings, then probably you shouldn't change anything.
@@leorole9344 Definitely. It's that I see a lot of tutorials and comments mentioning this problem as if holding every button the entire time is something you'll always be doing. Strive is the first time I'm playing Zato and I feel like I only hold buttons when doing something specific like a setup or a combo. When I'm on neutral improvising I'm rarely holding buttons.
It's interesting because without a camera dedicated to the hands it's kind of hard to see what the player is doing.
...I once had some sweet memories!
Bro PLEASE like give a tutorial or even the inputs for what you did at 6:00 and like how you got Eddie to the other side for the double frog thing cause that was SO SICK!
the inputs are on the screen
Came here to stop dying to zato and now im going in on a new main yeet
Thank you. Great guide. If you happen to have time could u make a combo video for zato newbies? I know there are tones of zato combos beginners. The problem is not a single video expalins for example why leap would miss and go over my head or why leap woyld just 1 hit instead of 2 hits. Im not new to fighting game. Play tekken mishimas, phase-4 in doa6 which are the most techinical characters in the game but zato is completely another level. Cant grasp the clue why my combos are inconsistent.. Would be really helpful if u could make a video of combos that newbies find difficult. I have list of combos that I find difficult to execute if you need them. I sometime find expert zato players having hard time understanding why zato newbies cant execute combos since it's so natural for them. Thx again
Thank God for you rath. I'm very hype to improve my zato thanks to you. I went from floor 10 with gio to floor 3 with zato lmao. Feels like I'm learning an entire new genre of game. But I really wanna play him! He's the coolest! Gio is boring!
I currently play millia and I have nothing but respect for zato players. I love zato and have been thinking of picking him up. He just seems so difficult tho
I am very new to guilty gear and when I saw zato I thought oh he looks cool, then I saw Eddie and I fell in love.
I love how the most difficult to learn is the only one im a little good at lol...looks like I have a lot of training to do
Use 6Hs to punish counter grabs or wake up backdash for high dmg counter hit
