a mate ordered one of these this week, one of the last in stock. only £2000 delivered to his door. can't wait to see it in the flesh. looks like it will handle welsh roads quite well and be a useful machine.
@@RichRides think a dealer closed and they were sold by someone else as q plates. I think he got the last one too. after seeing your review I fancied one myself.
Yes! this is what a review should be like , not just sticking a camera on and going as fast as you can and just leaving the viewer with the sounds of muffled exhausts and wind blast!
Really good review, thanks. I've been fancying one of these for ages, now I'm even more tempted. Worth pointing out that SWM do offer variations on this basic chassis, so if you want something more upright for commuting or maybe a trail style bike, its all there
Frame and engine from Shineray (China factory), bike finally assembling in Italy adding forks, brake, electrical, abs and eccetera. Take a look at SWM factory, previously it was Husquarna factory at Biandronno (Italy).
Having owned 60 odd bike in my 35 years of biking, I find you can ride anything anywhere. Its a matter of mind over matter. Ride a bike according to your limits. Plan your ride and stop often. People cross Europe on Honda C90's. I crossed france and into Belgium on a Daytona 675, Kawasaki ZX-9R, Kawasaki Z1000 and a Aprilia Mille. This year i took a Honda vfr800x crossrunner to Normandy, and that nearly broke down!!
I did a 3000 mile 3 week trip across 10 countries last summer on my Africa Twin. But I also did 500 miles over 2 days camping on my 125cc Honda Innova last year plus a load of green lanes on it so anything is possible on anything!
i already got myself an Hsq svartpilen 401 but looking at this beauty i think i might have made the wrong choice when it comes to the optic. I love the classic look
Thinking of getting a used 2019 model - but I occasionally do a 250 miles round trip - how do you think it would cope with that (mainly B roads, some twisty A roads)? cheers
On those kinds of roads I think it would be ok to do those miles occasionally. Even though it looks fairly sporty, the seating position was still pretty comfortable.
@@RichRides Cheers. I managed that journey on a RE Continental 650 with a solo seat & it was just about bearable - though that was a bit more powerful. The dealer has said they could fit higher bars for me so maybe it will be ok - the seat looks fairly plush & that makes a difference!
@@SteeeveO yes the seat will make a difference as will the bars. I had an Interceptor 650 and with a custom seat and bar risers did 5k comfortable miles this summer!
Great review Richard. Well done. If you have a chance, would love to hear your thoughts on the SWM 440 Silver Vase or Gran Turismo - those with an upright seating position instead.
I'm not sure, the looks are very subjective but does not do it for me. The sound, you say that it sounds good, but on the video, it sounds a little limp. I like the lightness though. As a cafe racer, what is the scope for customisation? Good review Richard.
Hey Richard, what sort of performance would this type of bike be on the 0-100kph in seconds? I can't see the stats anywhere. I assume say a 52Hp CB400, which is heavier, and similar Torque at 40NM vs SWM 35NM, would still be far stronger on acceleration and top end speed. I must say this is a very nice looking machine, even if it has chinese components. I wonder if it will be as durable as the Japanese bikes.
Hi Gary. I just had a look around and couldn't find any 0-100kph figures either :( Yes I imagine a CB400 would be quite a bit quicker as the SWM is only 35bhp. I was really impressed with it's quality throughout.
@@RichRides Thanks for checking Richard, yeah I agree, I think it looks cool. I've seen it in the flesh, and build looks decent. My only concern is the 250cc cafe racers made by the same Shineray Group have had a mixed bag of reviews, but many negative ones here. In fact most local mechanics in my area refuse to work on those carburettor models. The SWM has EFI, and I have a local dealer here that will service them. Most local mechanics here spoke quite positively on these SWMs though. I just need to decide whether I want to look cool on this, or go faster on a Used CB400, both around same price.
@@garyk8285 Yes SWM do seem to have a better reputation than a lot of others. I'd also say that the difference in the quality of a Chinese motorcycle from just a couple of years ago is massively different to current ones. I'm sure there are still some cheap (and therefore poor) stuff still being made but I've been impressed with recent SWM, Mash, and Benelli bikes made there.
@@RichRides Yeah, all good points. I spoke with the local dealer here and he said, if you plan to do more open road, then go for the CB400; but for local riding and especially in town the SWM is a really goood choice.
It was absolutely fine and nicely comfortable at that speed. As expected for a naked bike with no wind protection, it's windy at higher speeds of course.
@@RichRides thanks mate. We're the vibes bad? I've been waiting on the new Royal enfield interceptor 650 but still no answer on Australian launch. I can buy this and have enough spare for an old enfield bullet....
@@RoyaEnfieldBSAman the vibes aren't bad no, but they are there like any single. If I were you I'd go ride one and as the 650 Enfield is imminent (at least in the UK) I'd probably wait and try one of those too. All reviews of the 650 at launch look excellent and I can't wait to try one myself either!
You've got to ask yourself, do you really need any more than this to have a bit of fun on todays crap traffic infested roads? This is the raw basics of yesterdays rides. I dare you to use one and not grin. I expect on a dual carriageway in a high wind or motorway speeds trying to cover a 100 miles might not be pleasant tho. lol
Yep I totally agree on both points. I've ridden quite a few "back to basics" bikes now and really enjoy them. But as you say, any bike that's naked and that needs revs at speed is going to be a bit tiring on longer trips

I don't know, I LOVE the looks of the 401! I really enjoyed this bike but I think if it were me, I'd be choosing the 401 actually.

If only I'd spotted the circlips to remove the baffles earlier :)
i own one myself. they sound alot better in person. but ofcourse they can only sound so good being a single cylinder engine.
Does it have enough power to overtake on a Freeway where speeds are 110kph? eg quick burst to 125ph ?
Yes that should be fine as the official top speed is around 90mph (145kph) from memory.
Yo la veo como la versión más modernizada de la Royal Enfield GT535.
SALUDOS!!
Hey, i need a lambda sensor for my swm.. do you know of any uk dealers plz?
The one I knew and borrowed this bike from is no longer a SWM dealer. Maybe contact them directly to ask about spares swm-motorcycles.it/
nice review
Thanks Neil!

Who works the gear Box?
