      Quixel Mixer is sick! The way it can combine materials in a super realistic way, like cracked tiles and concrete spilling through. It's genius.

      I just started using Mixer 2020 as well. It's pretty good. I love that I can easily create my own smart materials. And having access to the Megascans library is a great boon to boot! The tie in to Unreal Engine with free unlimited access is what sold me over.

    • @RyoMassaki
      @RyoMassaki Před 4 lety +5

      @Sandborn Technically yes, but many would say don't do it, It's just not there yet (me included). The painting functionality is very basic and i think not very comfortable. You should take the name Mixer literal. You are basically mixing materials based on their height channel, or you generate masks based on normal, cavity, AO and other mesh defining inputs (or simply opacity masks). If you have access to the Megascan library or another library made up of high quality materials, you can create variations and mixtures of these materials very fast and effectively. In the same way you can create great looking surfaces for your models. But Painter as well as Mari give you much more control over the whole process as well as a more robust toolset to actually paint on the model.

  • @csmemarketing

    Excellent video on Material Painting Software. Substance Designer / Painter and Mari are the very top in the industry. Substance is universally loved and used in Game development but Mari is mostly used for Movie making. Although recently some studios have used Mari for game design.
    It's nice that The Foundry has all the tools you need for a full vfx pipeline.

    Mari can handle 32K? Wow, its no wonder Hollywood films with their productions and studios hooked into several render farms can produce any fantasy and sci-fi movies with killer visuals in them (story and success at the box office is another thing entirely though, lol). People at home doing their own work on computers would need the right graphic cards and setups to even be able to come out with a mere quarter of those things on a high end computer or laptop. or the ability to send one's work off and bake and render it for god knows how long if you wanted some of movie quality in your design work, videos art etc's. I'd sincerely hope one of your upcoming videos would also cover; render farms, if you hand't already done any Blender ones and how their work is rendered via a network of computers all using Blender and baking each other's work etc's. Again incredible stuff as always. Thumbs up!

    My guy, you're popular enough now to upgrade the audio even more. The boxiness has gotten better but it could still use some EQ. The quality has gotten better as well but the noise floor still sounds pretty high. If it's not your mic, you gotta gain stage better. USB mics in the $100 range have decent quality preamps and will sound good if recorded at a healthy level without clipping. Decent sounding preamps are everywhere these days, even right inside your onboard audio. I might get shit from other subs but it's so close to good I can't not say anything, especially since your content is ALL voice. The content is obviously very helpful to many people, so I hope sounding better will bring even more subs. Take care!

      I disagree with Majin.
      If you want to guarantee a job in the game/vfx industry, you pick a specialty and you get really good at it.
      No company/studio care if you can do some things in Photoshop, some things in Unreal, some things in Blender, etc.
      They are looking for people with specific skillets, like "technical artist", "lighting artist", "environment artist", "animator", "hard surface modeler", etc.
      You're useless to them if you can only do those things at a fair/low quality level. Those organizations are looking for people who know their way around their specialty and can get a high quality product out productively.

    • @Kiadaw77
      @Kiadaw77 Před 4 lety

      Sculpting, texturing and modeling are consider one skill set, 3D modeling. Texture is the easy part with software like Substance painter.
      sub categories for 3D artist would be character vs environment, which is everything that ain’t characters. Yes, a coffee cup, a gun a building, or a tree would all be considered by most environment.
      Different specialties would be like animation, rig, special effects, concept design etc

    • @JWPanimation
      @JWPanimation Před 4 lety

      I would say that having generalist experience is going to help you initially to see how all the pieces come together. Topology, UV and python scripting knowledge is especially useful all along the pipe. But when you apply for a job, especially at a large studio, you will need to specialize if you want to get in.
      For animators, a stop motion or 2d animation background is favored. Animation Mentor is the way to go after school, throw in some rigging and mocap knowledge and use that to build an animation reel.
      For modeling, traditional sculpting and maquette work, along with 3d coat and zbrush is great for organic and character work. Solid works, 3ds Max and Rhino will help you if you are an environment and hard edge modeler.
      For Surfacing - Substance and Mari, Photoshop, Illustrator, Zbrush and Nuke. Many lighters switch back and forth between these two areas. Technical knowledge of the renderer the studio is using or the unreal engine is a must.
      Riggers will need Python, PyMel, MEl and Python QT. along with a solid knowledge of modeling, mocap and UV layout. knowing anatomy and kinesiology is crucial. Riggers are typically in high demand.
      For lighters, having a photographic or painting background is preferred. lighters should know photoshop and especially Nuke. Many lighters also composite their own shots. On set VFX supervisors generally have lighting and composting backgrounds.
      For VFX, crowds and simulation - python scripting, rigging and lighting knowledge is a good base. knowing Houdini well being able use it to create believable effects will almost guarantee you a job right now.
      Hope this helps. The industry gets more complicated every year and it's hard to know where to break in

    For all those who need a jist of what u really need to understand is that both these programs are used on even the same subjects or meshes,.UDIMS are only supported by mari from my knowledge because substance focuses on efficient UV's. And with smaller res textures, game engines can run more smoothly, whereas for mari, the final result is what matters the most because it need quality over efficiency (not that it's not needed) but realistic texturing mainly needs high resolution details mari supports upto 8k texture maps, whereas substance supports only upto 2k or something, I just started using mari because it's much more of a tried and tested software.. And all the major studios use mari.. But going further I know for sure also have to learn substance

    MARI is buggy! It destroys masks after resaving, clamps them to useless. It brightens up LAYERS after incremental saving! And yes, I know about linear workflow.
    Its interface is super awkward. It always has some unwieldy ways of working. For example, when you open files, their file name is always contracted to several letters. Why on earth you have to expand it every single time? Why palettes are so bad?
    It is slow and pain to use. I don't say it's completely bad, just it's so unpredictable. And I use it for more than 5 years, and I stil can'tl ove it.
