Who thought this was high VS low season 2
Lol
I did
High Low is coming this month and will be titled and packaged much differently
:O Evan replied to me
I've been here since 20k subs so I was there for high low season 1 so I'm really exited for season 2(^o^)
@@EvansMTBSaga most anticipated MTB serie of 2024 yet...😅
I have installed a pair of the Elite 29er Pro36 on a Scott Spark RC and really like them. Having front/rear suspension any perceived uncomfortable stiffness is not an issue. In full lock out it becomes a little more apparent but not uncomfortable and the tradeoff with better control and directionality is definitely worth it. Doing a non-stop 60 mile ride yesterday just confirms my views. The Pro hubs are very good and I have just had a close look at the build quality and regreased the rear with no issues. I would certainly buy them again.
Yeah I think they would go perfectly on a full suspension, not a hardtail like I'm running. I've heard a lot of people run them on an XC bike, I didn't think 1550g was light enough for XC but I'll be darned
I shattered a carbon “XC”rim from BTLOS. They replaced it with a more “trail friendly” rim, I’m using it as a gravel wheelset. I replaced it with a rim from Light Bicycle, another Chinese brand. Very pleased with the quality and durability.
Trail wheels on a gravel bikes make sense. I will also use a Trek all mountain wheelset for my new gravel build. You can refurbish old (pre-boost) 27,5" wheels. The wheels weren't confidence inspiring on trails. They were OK, but after I tried a dedicated downhill wheel at the front, I also had to change it at the back. The bike holds lines a lot better.
Btlos are amazing I'm into 3rd season with their lightweight 27al rims. Sub 1200g wheelset at under $1000. And look cool.
BTLOS send me the wrong rims but did not hassle on the refund so no major issue there. Light bike, buddy had rim that just collapsed in on itself, very light use. All of these brands have poor QC compared to a company like Giant. If you are OK with saving on that, thats fine.
I have the Elitewheels Pro36 29ers and I love my wheels. I have been running them for over a year and have had no issues. I have had some rim strikes and even had a pinch flat with no issues on these wheels. Just like Evan I have had rocks come and smack these wheels all the time with no issues. These wheels are stiff but I prefer that. It gives more feed back of the terrain and has helped me better understand when my tires are slipping out. Before I got these wheels I was running an aluminum set and my tires would just slip out from underneath me because i was getting grip and grip for days then none what so ever. It was like a light switch grip then,no grip. Like he was saying you can feel the slipping of the tires before you lose all grip and slide off the trail. There may be something to that extra feedback and feel because, he was able to get that KOM back with little time on the wheelset.
Been watching your content for over a year now, love the new stuff, I always look forward to your next post. Best mtb channel on CZcams hands down.
Production value has gotten a lot better over time. Thank you for your hard work!
Sick edit! Great review! My wife and I hollered over to you while you were getting those "stare at it shots" sorry if we interrupted your flow. It was cool to see you getting those money shots. We were waiting for this edit to drop. Nice job as always!
Oh yeah sorry I was busy! Overcast is super rare here and it was perfect shooting conditions. Glad you saw the video and commented!
I've been very happy with their Edge Carbon Ultralight 50mm deep wheels on my road bike. Very light for the price and seem pretty compliant for road wheels at least. No problems with around 3000 miles so far. Strong crosswinds can push them around a bit, but nothing unusual for deep section wheels. I got them from Amazon, so shipping was fast.
I have a set of Elite wheels on my shorter travel trail bike. It is so lively and fast. I recommend adding a Vittoria airliner lite in the rear. It will soften the sound of the wheel a bit and also add a little insurance for the rim. Elite is awesome when it comes to their warranty. I had a wheel delaminate along where the tire seats. Elite sent me a full placement wheel with hub and spokes. Talk about awesome.
I got a set of their even cheaper ENT-MTB carbon wheels for a whopping $307 shipped during their 11-11 sale...and they're incredible.
I ordered a gravel wheelset from the factory that makes wheels for elite wheels. Can't wait to see how they ride. I never had carbon rims before.
I have these wheels on my bike. Definitely great for how much they cost. Hubs sounds great and run smooth. Definitely a decent wheel set and I would buy them again
I've been very happy with the 30mm ID SLR Elitewheels from Aliexpress on an XC bike for outright speed, but I did also notice they are a touch harsher than aluminum wheels. Very good wheels for the money though.
I think it is more on xc side than trail/enduro.
gotta try Hunts. I have a set of aluminum trail wide v2, almost as light as carbon and built great, I got them on sale last year but they look like they are on sale again. $400 for 1830g aluminum wheels with a warranty.
I have a pair of 29" carbon rims from EIE Carbon at $900. They are a Chinese brand. 1250 gr made out of T800 carbon and they ride incredible. They have exactly one year of nonstop XC racing and had no issues. So yes, there can be very good Chinese bike parts.
Hah, I've been watching some of your vids lately (I like how you setup your pov camera, editing and stuff). Saw your wheels on the OIZ and I didn't know what brand they are. Well, found em here :D. Looking for some decent options for my oiz H10. Keep up the good work ;)
Those wheels do look very nice!
I don’t think a carbon wheel will ever feel as soft as a good aluminum rim wheel and steel spokes will never feel as soft as Berd spokes. With that said, I have a set of custom Berd Spoke wheels with wide RFace alloy rims and I’m going to buy another set with the DT Swiss alloy rims. I’m not opposed to carbon rims and some branded Zipp and Stan carbon rims. They’re nice but let’s talk reality. Aluminum has flex that carbon rims can’t replicate.
I suspect the Elite logo's on the rims are looking worried, they know whats coming! :)
Nice review video.
at the expense of the electric pump, if he planted a tire on the rim of a tubeless one, this very rarely happens, the airflow is small there
Those skinny steel tubes of the bird frame look so good. I need a steel frame for my next bike. The tubing reminds me of my handmedown 90s bikes I would restore
How much of the difference is the change in spokes and not the change in rims? I would check the spoke tension and consider lowering it.
My current hardtail build started from an ali express carbon frame. Its still running strong after three seasons of trails it is probabaly not meant for
Unfortunately, even at that price, those wheels are waaay too expensive for me! They look nice though! Greetings from Croatia 😎
Your video shows that different brands, layup and design of carbon wheels offer different properties. For off road I prefer the feel of aluminium rims for my current set up but it's good to know how different carbon wheels ride. I have a set of road wheels from EliteWheels and whilst they are not the most top spec wheels available to buy, they are great for my needs.
Ive had a set of the Elite Pro33's for about a year now with about 800mi on them. With these being my first set of carbon MTB wheels i dont have anything to comapre them to, but they are much better than stock alloy wheels. I feel that EliteWheels would be a good upgrade for anyone looking to upgrade their stock wheels for a set of quality carbon wheels without spending over $1000.
You may be able to dial out some of that stiffness feel with your fork setting. Wheels are just an extension of the suspension together with tires.
what type of brakes did u use for the hard tail as i'm looking for brakes to switch with the DB8's
Hope you have better luck with your Fantik that I have. I have a different model, but the battery life the junk. They even sent me a second unit and it has the same issue. It's great when it works (and using a press-on Presta valve adapter), but not great QC.
Cool video. Great idea on the portable air pump, but your promotion code doesn't work
I've bought 2 sets of elitewheels and ride them on very rough Colorado front range difficult and extreme trails with drops and rock gardens much gnarlier than that on my Stumpjumper Evo and Trek Fuel Ex-e. So far so good. I would recommend them over Ryett, which I have on my nothing-stock Siskui D7 (also cheap Chinese wheels).
I also have the Elite Pro36 wheels on my YT Izzo Core 3 and they are fantastic. They brought the bike down to 27.5 lbs (no pedals) and they have been flawless. Regarding stiffness, I did not find a huge difference between the stock DT Swiss M1900 and the Elite wheels. Besides, coming from hardtails and rigid single speed race bikes, the full suspension Izzo feels far too smooth to worry about wheels stiffness. I ride at 19/20 PSI.
I run low tire pressures like you too. I think the Pro36 belong on a full suspension to negate the stiffness of the wheels. I think that'd be a perfect combo
@@EvansMTBSaga yes that makes sense.
Elite wheels has been reviewed by Hambini and luke trace velo. they're good. I don't even need to order from aliexpress to get them in my country as it is available in select bike shops. I also have taken a look at that wheel but i was thinking of putting it in my gravel bike but i decided to not replace the stock wheel at the moment. still deciding if an rb/gravel elite wheel or mtb elite wheel is the one im gonna purchase
Hi Evan.
How do you or do you even torque your centerlock brakes?
Interesting rim tape, looks like the thick rubbery stuff my Giant wheels have.
Love the this cant wait for High low season two
I worked in composites for a few years and I can tell you that even with the same quality control, if you use sub optimal components the end product suffers. Some materials may not absorb the resins properly and even basic materials used to stage and create the product can affect it.
I tried Chinese Light Bicycle carbon wheelset, and even got the extra strong version for the rear.
Rear wheel did not even last one year, cracked while playing on rocks.
I got the Gnar Trail 29 wheels from Elitewheels, 2 rides in they feel great compared to the standard aluminum syncros wheels that came on my bike.
No reason to doubt the quality of Elitewheels since they make so many wheels for other big brands
You've got a scott spark or a scale? Hows the compliance of the Gnar wheelset?
@@jburgers010 Got them on a Spark. They feel really snappy and light to pedal. Can’t say much about compliance yet after just 2 quite easy rides but I preferred the feel of the carbon wheels
Thanx! I also ride a Spark and want to make the same upgrade. Still figuring out the difference between the Gnar Trail SR and the Pro36.
I've had my Elite wheels for going on 2 years now and they've been great. I would recommend them to anyone.
I make sure to hit like on the start of the video so i don't forget after
Also: i just discovered how a compliant wheel can feel..its magic. Just a few loose spokes and a cheap ht feels so much better. Almost wanna experiment with this but im not sure if i wanna go through the hassle of doing up spokes daily without proper tools, budget and time
ELITEWHEELS is probably the best Chinese brand for carbon wheels. I have EDGE 45 mm road wheel and I can say that they are amazing. The feel so fast and good. The stiffness is amazing. This year I am planning to buy carbon wheels for my trail bike 150/150mm and I am wondering if Pro36 wheels are fine for jumps as well?
Bike looks sick with that frame color
"Fishtank pump" seating a bead? Wow!
Yo I love the new high vs low serio- wait
High Low is coming this month and will be titled and packaged much differently
When I build my own mountain bike that's what I'm doing. I don't do jumping. I bought a no name bike and was extremely impressed! I own many bikes that cost about 1/2 the money for being maybe 1/2 lb more.
Evan, what's your thoughts about using stiff wheels like these on a xc full suspension? With the suspension makeup for the stiffness? Would it be a perfect combo?
Yeah man absolutely. If I had an XC full sus I'd be using these wheels
Taiwanese vs Chinese are distinctly different in regard to quality.
And in the grand scheme - $750 vs $1k - 250 bucks is a lot of money, but wouldn't cover 10 co-pays when you break your body...
My wheels are made in Canada . Some China stuff ok some not so much . Bladed spokes are not for aero there for strength . What is your thoughts on inserts .
I think that high low season 2 will be very interesting.
going from those string spokes to the metal spokes I would expect it to feel stiffer. Regarding the washing out I don't think that has anything to do with the rims it's sounds like it's an issue with your tires.
I used the same tires on the string spoke wheels for a year+. It definitely was interesting testing another carbon wheel and seeing it's characteristics
240lb rider here. Have at least 10k on Light Bicycle rims.
Wheels are so expensive, but such a huge upgrade. I want to get a set of carbon wheels for my T9, but man it’s expensive 😬
What Valve core tool do you use?
It's the spokes. Those bladed spokes are very stiff, I'd never run them on anything MTB. And coming off Berd, everything will feel stiff. I'm on my 3rd set of generic home built rims, which cost even less than these retail sets.
The new hotness is the 'no spoke access holes' which don't require rim tape, as there are no holes in the tire side of the rim except the valve hole.
Also have three open mold frames that are working out super well.
Evan, just go with Mavic's and their Mextal alloy🤘🤘 "YEAH❗️"
My wife just got an Ibis Ripley (120mm travel). She's about 135 pounds. Do you think she should get the narrow or the wide version of this wheel for her new bike?
I own 2 elite wheelset. One is 7 years old and the other 4 and they are still holding. The 7 year old one is no longer on the original hubs.
That's great, can't say that about most Zipp wheels 😂
I'd love to try carbon parts one day but the trails i ride are like 90% loose rocks the size of a fist that are being thrown everywhere when you ride over them. Few rides on carbon parts there and you're definitely gonna break something. My aluminum frame and rims have so many scratches and dents on them but they're still holding strong because... aluminum.
Hey I heard that you talked to my friend azeem and you asked about me! Thanks man I’m in Africa rn. I registered but my family is adopting twins so that came first. I’ll see you at RO3, Gravelicious or unbound, whatever you’re doing next!
Heck yeah man I saw your name on the sign ups and we would've started at the same time. Enjoy your trip and see you at unbound
See you there! I just got back yesterday so I’m still recovering from jet lag. 😂
my chinese road carbon wheels are great and sometimes hit alot of deep potholes without problem, maybe next year get some carbon wheels for my xc bike
Hey Evan, i would love to see you get a e bike by polygon and to try some more e bike thinks in your channel, for videos like this you could use the e bike because of the weight to test to distruction, just thinks like this would be amazing for a ebike and not even touching the speed and easyness uphill.
Next video! And I have one video from last year riding a polygon ebike
Outside of American Aerospace the best carbon layup folks are in China.
I will not ride carbon rims anymore after cracking a rim on a sharp rock, that made a stress riser. Just easier to use aluminum that you can still ride out on.
Xinbo in Weihai city, Shandong has one of the best quality processes in the world, they achieve a surprisingly low void content if you pay the price...
Taiwan or China? I'd also say carbon layup from Germany is better.
My buddy cracked a 1350 g carbon fiber wheel set when he slammed the back wheel into a curb at about 230 pounds bodyweight… in spite of a visible serious crack. He continued riding that wheel tubeless for over a month before selling the bike with the cracked wheel still completely rideable. The myth that every carbon failure is catastrophic needs to die. I’ve been running the same light bicycle carbon front wheel since 2016 and I’m 210 pound aggressive/fast rider. I’ve slammed it into rock garden so hard that I exploded the front tire instantly and all I have to show for it is a tiny flat spot on the lip of the rim. I’ve destroyed aluminum wheels doing far less than that.
@@SprSonik13 - I cracked the out side wall on a rock shaped like triangle, it was not going to hold air. I tried. LOL Rather just ride aluminum at this point. 100's of dollars vs less that $150 for a replacement rim, I'll go aluminum.
@@SprSonik13 If you ride on a carbon part that is visibly cracked, you will hurt yourself, its only a matter of time. Don't encourage poor decisions like this.
Try to get rid of the bladed spokes that should help with the stiffness a tube has way different flex than a blade in all directions...
Just got a new bike the Giant Trance Advanced Pro 29 2 and its the first time ive had carbon wheels on a bike. Only one ride in because the weather but so far all I know is that they look nice.
Heck yeah congrats on the new bike! I saw a Giant the other day (I rarely see Giants around here) and I was impressed
@@EvansMTBSaga Thank you! I'm pretty stoked, it has the Fox Live Valve too. I don't often get very many new bike days lol.
W vid! Good luck racing tomorrow!
Thanks Caleb!
Probably depends on which brands 🤔
28h for xc? How much do you weigh?
Ok so in your opinion, would these elite wheels be good for riding on the road with the giant xtc advanced?
Yeah they're great and stiff
How did you like the hubs? I haven't heard anything about the hubs on the Elite wheels. I know Spindatt runs them and they are plenty strong. But again he doesn't say anything about the hubs. Engagement is important to a lot of people, I'm curious what hubs it could be compared to.
It's definitely high engagement, I just don't know the number.
@@EvansMTBSaga I think it's a little frustrating because they don't give much in the way of details on the hubs on their website. I was really close to ordering them, but ended up picking up aluminum I9s used.
Promotional code for the Fanttik X9 Ace Bicycle Tire Inflator did not work.
stiff compared to berd spokes or normal carbon wheels?
Stiff compared to normal carbon wheels. That's why I did the Crankbrothers test at the end
@@EvansMTBSaga sorry, I thought the video was over at 10 minutes. finishing it up now!
it say's 1499 when I checked? did the sale end that quick?
Yeah the sale ended a week or so ago, still marked down $200 from their retail price and I could see it going up to that soon. The T6 has been a mega hit since it was released
Tbh, I’ve got my self a Chineese XC full sus frame from the company ICAN cycling. Rides like a charm, and their customer service was on point. I throw it around, drops, rock and it doesn’t seem to care.
So be scared of Chinese carbon.
Yes
You got the real Chinese and the fake Chinese lol
1st comment love your vidios I would like to ask a question are specialized Stumpjumper alloys good
Yes
Yeah they definitely are
Go for the comp models! The Alloy Comp and Carbon Comp have great components but not the entry level sadly. If you can save up for those. I ride Carbon stumpjumpers and the are amazing. If you have questions ask 😊
I've been using Chinese carbon products since 2018. Huge change from then to now. But even then you could find great quality products for a decent price. Recently ive built up some wheels on my own using all Chinese stuff. Total weight eas 1450g for $400 and the wheels have been bomb proof.
Nowadays when buying bike parts 90% of the time I buy Chinese brand stuff and only touch the mainstream brands when I find them for at least 40% off. Screw the (formerly) inflated price of name brand bike parts, screw the show-off fashion show aspect of the sport. I'm not a top end rider so most of the marginal drawbacks of Chinese brands are lost on me, I just want to get on the trail for a reasonable price.
Im more excited about the upcoming unbound
I still can't get over the stigma of Chinese "no name" or small name carbon.. A few years ago, a competitor with the Police and Fire games had a "blowout" on a 50mph downhill due to a wheel failure, and died. Of course, the company he purchased the carbon wheels from was long gone, and the family had no way to pursue litigation. Combine that with the "Aliexpress" effect of subpar carbon bars, posts, etc., and I'm still not ready to save a few bucks...
This is why I won't trust cheap Chinese no-name parts. Name brands have to worry about potential lawsuit and are more likely to have a quality product they can stand behind. Fly-by-night cheap knock-offs don't really have to worry about paying out to family of somebody who dies when a cheap wheel, frame, handlebar, etc fails spectacularly and their product quality will reflect that.
Why don't you try and put berd spokes on those and see if that helps them.
That would be fun! It'd cost me $500 though
@EvansMTBSaga yes that is a problem.
why are u not combining them like aluminum in the rear and carbon in the front tecnically shouldnt it give u the advantage of more smallbump sensetivety in the front because of the love weight of the wheel meaning less mass that needs to get moved and a stronger more forgiving aluminum wheel in the back because most of the time at least form my experience the rear rim gets alot more abused and dinged on obstacles only downside would probably be that the bike would maybe be a lil bit more rear heavy but especially in a HT i think this would be beneficial
Speedsafe wheels 1242 grams 4 years on them
Strava doesn’t lie. May be your subjective impression was impacted by the fact you were going faster?
Not all premium wheels are compliant. I've ridden a pair of Giant carbon wheels and they were stiff as hell. Horrible feeling to ride. I think some wheels are just stiffer than others and vice versa
The mini air pump is a scam for seating a tubeless tire. It’s just the rim tire and rim tape combination
Oh man, i was thinking how cool was that pump and almost bought it to seat my first tubeless setup
How can you say it's a scam? I demonstrated it. Tires and rims these days are made with tighter tolerances and seating beads is very easy (most times)
@@EvansMTBSaga because it’s not a alternative to a floor pump. The air flow is ok to pump up a already seated tire or when the rim tire combo is right. It may replaces a mini pump
Almost ALL bike parts are made in China. My son and I use Chinese "foreign" made carbon forks, hoops, and handlebars on our BMX and MTB. We've never had a problem and we get a 1 year warranty.
got farsports, elite, avian, and yoleo.
the best build quality is the farsports.
my carbon frame from alixpress is still ridden today
these wheels cost more than my bike lmao
You shouldn't have reached out, they often have higher quality versions to send to CZcamsrs. I remember a video about a chinese carbon frame where the viewers complained especifically about this and the frame he bought "privately" wasn't as safe as the one they had sent him
Im jealous that your doing unbound, check out Dylan Johnson for some gravel racing content
Never tried Chinese carbon wheels. Have friend broke Reserve wheels and We Are One wheels, so I been on alloy wheels since
this is out of topic but you sound like Evan Peters
Bring manufacturing back to America, I'll happily pay more so that my neighbors can make a livable wage.
As an avid buyer of cheap cino carbon ELITE wheels are not the best value you can find cheaper or better built.
Note that I didn't say cheaper AND better...
Gotta be realistic 😂
I love my 9velo wheels but they ain't that cheap
Straight pull spokes is an instant fail for me.
How come?
@@EvansMTBSaga because they are not better in any way than j-bend spokes.
Worse than trash. Trash doesn’t harm people normally.
I own as set of these wheels as well and absolutely love them. One thing that's hard to communicate is just how good these wheels look, the marbled finish absolutely gives the wheels a stunning look. I put them on my long-travel XC bike, and they are perfect for that application. They replaced a set of LG1 Carbon Enduro wheels from EThirteen. I completely agree with the sentiment that these wheels are stiff (those Sapim CXRays are some of the stiffest alloy spokes afterall).
