“I killed a man by accident, confessed to doing so in a letter that I consciously wrote and put in a capsule, and killed two more people on purpose, so no one would dig up the capsule and open my letter for no reason. Best plan ever!”
He figured by doing that his conseince would be cleared and would also keep his job in politics.
@Brandon Allen while I understand the logic, I can’t help but think it’s utterly stupid, at the same time. If he wanted to confess in a manner that would keep him from avoiding the consequences of his actions, why not shout it in his car, or underwater at a public swimming pool? This whole “I wrote my confession, so my conscience is cleared” nonsense would make sense, if he didn’t feel bad about them digging up the capsule. The “urge to confess” is very strange in this episode.
@@JJ_R Because shouting it in his car mean no one would still know the truth of what he did and the guilt would still be eating him up. By writing the letter he knew that in 100 years someone would eventually read it and know what he had done. Sure its stupid to anyone else on the outside but for him psychologically it would be enough for him to get past his guilt.
Guilt makes everyone crazy.
@@VictorLepanto very true
The way Stottlemeyer’s voice breaks as he read the confession letter. He finally gives Darren the justice he deserves as well as getting closure for himself and the kid’s family. I love this show’s attention to detail.
I knew that had a mean something when he broke down like that.
He had a few options here: (1) Come out in the middle of the night, dig up the time capsule, and remove the letter (2) reason that just because they open up a time capsule to add a new chapter, that doesn't mean they're going to read every letter in it, and do nothing (3) commit two murders that the police are sure to investigate to cover up the one he had already gotten away with.
Clearly, go with option 3!
The criminals in this show tend to use the most outlandish methods to enact their plans. From using salt blocks that will dissolve from the sprinklers to make it look like someone they killed just crashed their truck while they themselves are at a very public place for an alibi, to committing two 1st degree murders to try and hide the 2nd degree murder from a DUI
There's also option 4; don't write a letter confessing a murder and get a diary :D
People fraught with guilt don't always think straight.
Or just grab your letter and run when it's opened. You'll be known as that weird guy but hey
@@dagi_magna6446 And if people REALLY ask, just say you wrote some stupid inside. "Like this one time I went to this bar. I have seen men and women go to for years, and just wanted to try something different. I DIDN'T know it was a gay bar! And I was too tired to just leave, so I got some drinks in me, and... Well I just had some drinks in me, that is all you really need to know...."
Randy's theory at the start was so hillarious... the Second Oldest Man in the World did it! SO he could be first ahahahaha I just love Randy's theories
The fact that he had to write a letter that he thought wouldn't be seen for 100 years to cope with his guilt instead of just telling the police about what he did shows that he cared more about his career than the killing of a human being...
More than that, the fact that he was willing to kill two more people in cold blood in order to prevent the pulling up of that capsule!
aafster life Exactly
No, it only shows that he values forgiveness from and for his own soul more than a "justice" that in that case would have been (by some points of view) completely useless.
And if it was indeed an accident, sure he would still get in some trouble, coming clean to the cops would have been the easiest way of doing things, because it'll be a lighter sentencing. Instead, he tried to cover up the accident, and then killed two more people in an attempt to keep the cover up going...
Then he skipped town, changed his name and started working as a coroner for the SBPD.
Oh that's where I saw him, Psych, thank you, it was bugging me.
Ahh I see you're a man of culture 😌
He was also a coroner on diagnosis murder x marks the spot episode
And then at some point, he was visited by a voice from the heavens, asking for his vessel to fulfill a prophecy between Heaven and Hell, thus becoming a physical form for the angel Zachariah with the name _Winchester_ in mind
You ready for the new Psych movie in July?!?!?!
"It was an accident" right but the other two were fairly intentional. Plus why would they even look at the letter the whole point was to add a chapter and put back in for it's 100 year recovery date because the guy happened to have a whole chapters worth of life lived in an autobiography that was supposed to cover his whole life.
Paranoia is a hell of a thing, ain't it?
It’s pretty cold blooded. That’s punishable by death in California
@@captaindreadeye6264 bad writing is a hell of a thing, ain't it?
@@yourmum69_420 Especially when the writers decide to always just make the murderers evil.
I thought this episode was kind of ironic. He was so empathetic that he had to confess to one accidental killing in a letter, but in doing so, it lead him to murder two people. By the way, drunk drivers who kill people do get light prison sentences relative to murderers. If he came forward and confessed once he knew the time capsule was coming up, he'd get some credit for confessing and the letter, which showed he was sorry, then maybe he'd serve 5 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter. Now he's going away for the rest of his life.
And I seriously doubt he'll be breaking Miles Holling's record anytime soon.
Should've came clean the moment the accident happened. By keeping it secret for so long, can be taken as "he did it on purpose, and it wasn't just an accident." So he may end up getting a 1st degree or 2nd degree murder charge, added on top of the two guaranteed first degree murder charges against him, just because he tried to cover up what he claims to be "an accident."
@@deathsheir2035 One can argue that what's done is done. Going down for vehicular manslaughter wouldn't have brought anybody back, I seriously doubt he did it on purpose, what's the motive? Anyway, a single count of first degree murder at his age is as bad as three.
@@deathsheir2035 that’s quite a bit of a stretch. Maybe at most he could get murder in the 3rd degree (in states where it exists, others just classify it as manslaughter). You’d have to prove premeditation for 1st degree, which clearly wasn’t there.
Also, it looks like California doesn’t have a 3rd degree murder category, so he’d definitely get a manslaughter charge.
@@martyjackson4166 3rd Degree Murder = Manslaughter.
The two terms are interchangeable. Some states call it specifically manslaughter. Others call it 3rd Degree Murder.
And it's not a bit of a stretch to think a jury could potentially find him guilty of three counts of first degree murders. He covered his actions, of what he could've easily claimed to be an accident. Then killed others, in an attempt to keep the first a secret. Why keep an accident covered, unless it wasn't an accident?
Prosecutors have a lot to work with, to get him three counts of first degree murders. I made mention of second degree murder, which is less severe, and requires less evidence than first degree murders. As a result, for an easier verdict, lawyers could also potentially aim for second degree murder, for the first, and two first degree murders, for the two after the first.
First Degree Murder: Premeditated.
Second Degree Murder: Wasn't planned, but through series of emotional events, it happened.
Third degree murder/Manslaughter: Purely accidental.
Murder in Self-Defense: Self-explanatory, usually doesn't come with jail time. But if self-defense is found unjustified, would be treated as second degree murder or third degree murder, depending on circumstance.
Accidentally hitting someone with a car: Third Degree at worst and at best.
Covering up the accident: Second degree at worst. Third degree at best.
Killing two other people to keep the accident covered up: First degree at worst. Second degree at best. Not counting the two premeditated murders in attempt to keep the first covered.
Kills 2 people to hide a secret, then gets very upset and shaken about the original kill from 1998, but doesn’t seem to care about the next 2 killings...
Yeah kinda annoyed me too. He tried to reason out the accident, even if the mayor forgives him on that what about the two murders lol.
Also, the man could’ve just dug it up and steal back the letter, he didn’t have to murder two men
You know what they say: the second one's easier
Funny how he regrets killing that boy, yet seems to have none towards his recent victims.
Waiting for youtube lawyer who will say
"That proof won't stand in court"
"He can just deny it"
Not in front of all those witnesses and the fact he wasn't pressed to confess.
He only confessed to hitting the guy with his car. That doesn't give them any evidence he killed the other two.
@@jameshill2450 He's got the snake bite from one of the security guard's pet snakes from when he broke into his house to murder him. They could possibly match/identify the DNA bite from the snakes...
It blows my mind how many of the perps on this show kill someone to cover up a different murder or crime. I'm sorry, but you'd have gotten less time for vehicular manslaughter than you'd get for double first-degree murder.
Fear
Their goal isn't to get less time. It's to get no time whatsoever, and for no one to know.
@@jessiehogue. yeah, and how'd that work out for him?
@@KupKate215 You're questioning their motive. The motive has literally nothing to do with whether it works out or not for them, it is strictly 'the reason why they attempted to do it.'
You're acting like you're surprised a criminal would try to cover their tracks after committing a crime because 'the punishment would be less serious if they hadn't'. From their viewpoint, 'if they cover their tracks and get away with it, there will be no punishment whatsoever'. THAT is the motive there. It's not surprising at all.
What *would* be surprising, however, would be what you described. Not impossible, I imagine - there's tons of weirdoes everywhere - but I'm willing to bet that for every criminal who would not commit additional crimes to hide their guilt, there are a thousand who would.
@@jessiehogue. I'm not questioning their motive, I'm questioning their intelligence.
The sad thing is the mayor only said he whould dig it up to add something not open anything that was ment for another 45 years
Exactly yes
WE NEED MORE!!
This is diabolical! He roams free! He changed his name to Woodrow “Woody” Strode and became a coroner for the Santa Barbara Police Department!! Now he got access to killing people and blaming others. He owns NO shame!!
😹😹 But seriously, they should do that one time. A character from one show who actually Does change his name and people Almost catch them, but they go to the next show.
Good episode
As far as "Here's what happened" sequences go, I hope they upload the clip from season 7 episode 9 where he goes through the here's what happened while doing a gregorian chant. That was probably my favorite here's what happened moment cause of how hilarious it was
I have watched this show since it premiered! Still watching reruns! 😄
~RIP Glenne Headly~
Aw man I wish the clip of Monk and Stottlemeyer simultaneously solving the case was here! Is it anywhere on CZcams?
I understand now why the captain look so emotional in this.
I thought Zachariah hated humans. Why is he playing with them?
So he killed two people so the Police won't find out that he ran over someone with a car. So instead being convicted for one murder, now he will get for three! Brilliant plan
Ding ding Darwin Award winner!
every year I rewatch all seasons one time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i still watch monk to this day 😌
Same
Thats some solid acting when he confessed. The walk back and expressing like that with his hands and face. You dont see that much in acting anymore
also ironic. the urge to confess was usually a cop's best friend. in this case, it was their worst enemy. they confessed on something no one would read during their time.
If Monk and Psych ever did a crossover, it’s be hilarious if Monk ran into Woody
Shawn & Gus will drive Monk into a second nervous breakdown.
@@mijadane and....REBOOT
For everyone who commented about seeing a Monk / Psych crossover, there's a rarely seen USA network trailer where Shawn is eating like a slob while talking to Adrian. This might be the closest we will ever get. There are burn notice/ Royal pains teasers if anyone else is interested.
@@jsdc002 There’s a few others like that. One is Monk and Shawn discussing 9 or 10. Monk unsurprisingly prefers 10, Shawn likes 9. Another also features Anthony Michael Hall from his show “Dead Zone”
Can y'all post full episodes 😭
CZcams won't allow it.
Amazon Prime has them for the time being and it will also go to the Peacock Network next month.
If you get the channel heros and icons monk is on mon-fri at 1 PST
You can watch it for free on soap2day (not 100% legal I think) or you wait till 15.06 and watch it for free on peacock
I would loved to see Psychic and Monk team up
"I don't know you at all"
*y e s*
ironic. he killed 2 people to avoid having the time capsule opened up out of fear of the slight chance they would look at his letter. instead this caused them to open to intentionally read the letter. if he had just not done anything, he would have been safe.
Woodrow from Psych on Monk... this could be why he was dodgy about being on camera near Shawn Spencer...
Its weird as soon as monk says what happens they instantly confess. Wouldn't they normally refuse to comment to try a salvage something in court?
I really thought the oldest man was killed by the second oldest man
Man the mayors assistant from Ghostbusters 2 hasn't gotten a break since
This guy became a double murderer after killing somebody by accident? That’s fucked up
Woodmaster from Psych, Amazing 🔥
A defense attorney would argue his confession should be suppressed because he wasn't free to leave & hadn't been Mirandized. Prosecutor would argue he should've felt free to leave, his "detention" was brief "Terry stop" and he wasn't being interrogated.
Okay... but here’s the thing... why would they have opened the letter if it was only going to be opened to just add chapters to that book?
bad writing
When you go for 1 but get 2
It's interesting the way he still tries to justify himself for the crash when he's since committed two deliberate murders.
It wasn't shown here, but the earlier scene was actually more touching
*Stottlemeyer at the grave*
Gravedigger: That was you're case wasn't it
Stottlemeyer: It still is
Which kind of summarizes the attitude of a lot of detectives towards their cases
The gravedigger even says the ground was really cold and hard the day he did the digging.
"Almost like the Earth didn't want him."
Coulda just dug it up when nobody noticed and replaced his letter with a new one.
I roll my eyes and get angry every time he says it was an accident. He was black out drunk but got behind the wheel of a car anyway.
Never thought I’d see an angel get arrested.
10 points if you got that reference!
Great show but I've always had a problem with this episode. Who the hell decides to commit two murders that the cops are sure to investigate and maybe uncover the other murder he committed in the past? Even if the old guy lived another five years, that hardly means they'll read every letter in the capsule so a wise man would have done nothing.
An even wiser man would have dug up the capsule himself and replaced his old letter with an innocuous one.
And the wisest man of all wouldn't have written a goddamned confession and placed it in a capsule that would have been opened at *some* point, be it to salvage his freedom or his legacy.
Now, some would say the wisest choice of all would be to not drive while drunk but I say driving is a tedious and boring affair, let people have their thing.
A mix of guilt, shame, and paranoia is a harsh combo indeed.
Bring Monk back please!
This was the dumbest murderer ever
My favorite moment was a little before this scene: Monk and a fuming Stottlemeyer walk out of mayor's office when Monk grabs his arm at the start of a gradual "I GOT IT!"; Leland sees it in his eyes and they race back in.
Woody what are you doing, dude?
I thought time, love, and tenderness killed him.
That was a bit streched. Would they read his letter while they dug the capsule only to add next chapter of oldest man biography? I gues they would only add it and bury capsule again without reading any letter. But i gues he did not want to risk it. He panicked. Oh well.
I like murder plots where the murderer kills somebody and diggs himself into a bigger hole by killing more people
His logic made no sense, just because they added another chapter to his book doesn't mean they would go through an open everyone's letter
The killer played also on psych, right? ^^
Yes, and an angel on Supernatural.
Honestly this whole thing could have been so much better if what he put in the time capsule was worth all this subterfuge.
The “murderer” could have just dug up the time capsule and stolen the whole capsule instead of killing anyone. Major plot hole.
Isn't this the cranky boi from House M.D.
Omgawd
If this guy had just had the willpower not to give himself away, he could have gotten away with it.
This fellow is in psych...
What happened to the captains original wife?
Oh no! Not Woody Strode!!!
Kills 1 person :sad.
Proceeds to kill 2 more to cover it up
clearly accidently killing someone while driving drunk was less of a crime than murdering two people
I would have assumed the second oldest man
Knowing this show the second oldest man. Never seen the episode or this clip. Wild shot in the dark.

Hell why would you ever. I would of taken that to my grave. 😂
If he didn't want people to know that he killed a kid by accident, then all he had to do was nothing. The whole point of time capsules is to leave messages for generations into the future. If the old man lived to 115, no one would open his letter. That's the point. It's a message for people into the future and no one would be the wiser if he had done nothing.
Yes, but I guess Gammill was so wracked with shame and guilt that he had to confess. Just, y'know, in a way that still let him have a career.
More than likely they wouldn't read his letter, but paranoia really screws with your head. He must really not have been thinking straight.
Scaring somone to death (on purpose) is still killing them.
Hey it’s Woody!
Always sorta felt bad for that guy
its zachariah from supernatural
I knew I recognized him from somewhere!
Why did he write it in the first place? If he don't want people to know he shouldn't have write it and keep it there, out in public.
The plot of this episode makes no sense at all.
People make confessions in their will in real life, it's called the desire to confess but mixed with their survival instinct of not wanting to go to jail.
It wasn’t supposed to be read until he was long dead.
I knew I saw Gamill's face before. The actor portraying him also played a "working stiff" record producer in _Ray._
He was also in Wayne's World and Ghostbusters 2.
The second oldest man in the world
hi
Salemetsiz be.
"I felt so bad killing someone on accident, I had to kill two people intentionally so no one would know!"
And then he broke out of prison and became the chief medical examiner of santa barbara
Care to tell me HWHHHYYYY? 0:23
i don't get this solve. The man gets arrested because he killed the old dude with his car? But we blatantly saw the old dude get suffocated at the beginning of the episode! and didn't the assistant do it?
Jesus christ bro. He confssed in a letter to ANOTHER KILLING because it was eating him alive ( as guilt tends to do with real life killers ). And he killed the old guy to prevent the capsule from being dug up and opened.
Hey, Woody.
I watch Monk every day from 7am to 11am. After tomorrow I won't be able to watch it because the HALLMARK MURDER MYSTERY CHANNEL is taking it off the air!!! I can't believe they are taking it off their channel!!!! Rethink your decision HALLMARK!!!
They probably lost the rights.
How did this guy ever end up working for Santa Barbara police if hes a murderer
I'd guess he likely didn't state that in his resume.
I watch this
Honestly, Tony Shalhoub carried this show. Just read the other comments, the whole show is cartoonish in how it's written. No one would really commit these ridiculous and exaggerated murders because they'd realize, the more moving parts you add to a plan, the more likely it is that you'll screw something up.
That's the problem with premeditated murder in general. You need to plan it just right, if you want any form of alibi, if you want to get away with it. That's a lot of moving parts to get that alibi, and hold to the false alibi.
What is Woody Strode doing here?
This whole thing makes no sense. Why would they read through all the personal letters just because they dug up the capsule to *add* a new one in? Just digging it up doesn’t mean taking everything out and reading it, it would defeat the purpose of having a time capsule to even add to in the first place.
If he did nothing, the old man’s new letter would have been dropped into that bag in an envelope like the rest and re-buried. No one would know what his confession was. But I guess he was paranoid or something? Stupid for sure.
So the guy decided to upgrade from an accident to a triple homicide.
This is one of my most disliked episodes. Because it makes zero sense. Guy feels so guilty about accidentally killing someone he confesses in secret to a time capsule (wonderful absolution!) and then is quite happy to kill someone else just to keep the secret for longer.
Yeah, makes sense.
Drinking, really that is your excuse.
Oh, it's Kurt Fuller. He did it. Of course, he did it. Hey look, its an officious bureaucratic authority figure played by Robert Gunton. He has a horrible, battle-axe wife. Look it's Kathleen Freeman.
The lieutenant didn't have to rough up the suspect, he wasn't resisting. Pig .
Jesus Christ has died and risen again, so that everyone who believes in Him might not die, but have eternal life. We are to repent of our sins, and believe in Him, that we might have salvation after death. Read the New Testament of the Bible for more information.
