Adrian Monk (Emmy®-winner Tony Shalhoub) was once a rising star with the San Francisco Police Department, legendary for using unconventional means to solve the department's most baffling cases. But after the tragic and still-unsolved murder of his wife, Trudy, the devastated Monk becomes obsessive-compulsive. His psychological disorder has caused him to develop an abnormal fear of virtually everything: germs, heights, crowds... even milk. Monk's condition costs him his job, but he's back as a police consultant despite the unique challenges he encounters in his everyday life. These challenges lead Monk to hire a personal nurse, Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram), who is always there to offer her assistance, even with the simplest of tasks (like organizing his sock drawer). Her less-than-subtle prodding keeps the "defective detective" on track in his investigations, as well as in his efforts to convince Captain Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine) to allow him to return to the force.

It's kinda sad that she wanted to kill her husband so badly that she totally gave up any hope she had of ever performing, or walking, again. An elephant stepping on your foot wouldn't break it - it would DEMOLISH it. As in reduce it to powder.

I like how she thought she could actually escape, by the time she got out of the Circus the Captain could've called in backup
Eh, if she was scared of hospitals, maybe she was even more afraid of jails, and even a slim chance to avoid one was worth it. The thing I like about the story was how that elephant wouldn't have broken her foot - he would've absolutely obliterated it. Her bones would be like gravel afterward, there's no fixing that.

Eh, when you're desperate, you take the 0.1% chance. She had a better chance than others. If she got out of the circus, disappeared long enough to get a taxi, then made it across the border. I remember a bunch of cops surrounded that doctor who was labeled the 7-way killer or something, the odds of him getting away on foot were astronomical, but he still made a run for it.
She actually *didn't care* whether she "COULD escape". That isn't how the self-preservation instinct works-- In that mode, *you don't* "think", you just RUN.
The clown should have got a spin-off series where he performs the 'Here’s What Happened' segment using mime.
I would pay good money to see that show.
I love how Monk brings up these small details killers always forget, the lightswitch, batteries, parts of their clothes.
It's always the little things that bring them down
Don't forget the classic "You parked on a hill"
It's particularly relevant because he is obsessive enough that he would never even accidentally forget something like that.
Monk would actually be a terrifying murderer.
The same thing happened in one of the Christmas episodes. Monk knew who it was when the killer switched envelopes by accident during the secret Santa exchange.
I love how the screenwriters think up these small details they conveniently have the killers forget so Monk actually has a watchable show to make.
The way Monk and Stottlemeyer (mostly Monk) were getting annoyed with that clown.
Can't say I blame 'em. Personally, I find clowns pretty annoying myself.

LOL The clown's antics during the summation were by far the best part of this clip. Love the way he said, "For what?!" when getting arrested by Stottlemeyer. I wonder if the captain dropped the impersonation charge after Natasha tried to make a run for it. I would think yes since dealing with Natasha would be the bigger priority since she was a murder suspect, but I could see Stottlemeyer wanting to make an example out of the clown after annoying him that much. XD
Those clowns have to learn: we don't like it when you do that lol

I actually find it pretty funny that Monk wasn't creeped out by the clown, since he has so many fears, both rational and irrational and a fear of clowns can be considered rational
@@kittenclysm116 I think that was done on purpose by the writers. They wanted to show as irrational Monk can be about fears, he can also be just as irrational about stuff he's not afraid of either, like dead bodies and clowns.
Honestly, I think it made Monk a better character because it showed he was unique and not your run of the mill OOC person.
The clown would likely be arrested in real life for interrupting an investigation / arrest. He was given multiple warnings after all to hoof it, and his actions almost caused the suspect to get away.
It's not the clown's fault that Stottlemeyer turned his back on a murderer immediately after it was announced to the whole room how she did it and that they have proof.
The clown doesn't have a problem. He's just doing his job.
He should do his job on stage, not during the murder investigatio

That's like saying that if Stottlemeyer went around arresting random people, he would be "just doing his job". No. Nobody asked the clown to entertain them, on the contrary, he was asked several times by different people to stop. He was _not_ doing his job, he was harassing.

Monk's relationship with the killer in this one was really cool to me. He both admired her abilities but also truly detested her.

That was the same thing I was thinking. She had ample time to move and she also wasn't directly in the vehicle's path. She could have just stepped aside. It wasn't that realistic to me.

I see a pattern where whenever Monk is right about the suspect they deny it and call him things like insane, ridiculous, etc. to undermine and maybe discourage him.

this is one of my favourite episodes of monk and great remastered by universal in HD and on Amazon tv
I really would have liked an episode of these people Monk caught in prison talking about how they almost got away with it, etc.... Each one sharing their story.
There was a scene like that in the 100th case episode, a few of the criminals from past episodes were shown in prison complimenting each other on their schemes

Jesus Sharona, the jeep was like 50 feet away and driving at like 15 miles an hour. She freaked out almost 3 whole times before the vehicle came close.

I've watch enough to know police don't work like that. This show had moments where it's real good and moments like this, when it really sucks.
Yeah, pretty clumsy move from the murderer, leaving the walkie-talkie there (or lazy writing). All that planning to get away with murder and you forgot the ONE thing connecting you to the murder? If she had destroyed that thing, she would've walked free. Well, after her ankle was healed at least!
This episode gave me nightmares as a kid especially both times they used that crunch sound effect. 🤢
