    Switching and linear power supplies have different behaviours that can lead to a wrong diagnosis.
    Switching power supplies they turn off if the output is shorted. It has to do with their working principle, it tries to stabilize the output voltage by monitoring it through a feedback, if the output voltage is below a certain threshold it turns the power on to raise the voltage up, once the voltage gets high enough to a certain point it turns the power off and just the power stored on the output capacitors is now powering the line and it repeats from there, that happens so fast that you don't see a variation on voltage on most common multimeters. So if the output is shorted the voltage output is never going to be in spec so the monitoring is always going to see a low voltage and the controller is going to enter protection mode which turns the power supply off.
    Now, linear power supplies are different beasts, they don't care if the output is shorted, they keep pushing power into the output. That causes the power supply to heat up cause it physically cannot handle the amount of current passing through it, it's like all the power that's supposed to go to the output is being bottlenecked by the power supply itself therefore it gets hot instead of whatever is causing the short on the ouput.
    A lot of laptops have linear power supplies for the 5V and 3.3V which are often called "5V_ALW" and "3v3_ALW" (ALW stands for "always") and those are not to be confused with the main 3.3V and 5V rails which are created by switching power supplies which you can find then at coils. The "always" power rails shows up before the main ones and those are usually what powers the EC and other parts of the circuit that are handled by a earlier part of the starting sequence.
    All being said, if a chip is getting hot, don't just jump to conclusions and think the chip is shorted. Try to at least find the datasheet and what the chip is supposed to do, if it's a power supply try diagnosing the output. if the output is not shorted it could be that power supply is powering another linear power supply which the output is shorted.

      @miguelfontenele221 Před rokem +3

      @@boudrass Oh yeah, that's a very good point. In most laptop circuits, and i've seen in some mini pcs that have a similar circuit like the lenovo m93p, there is one chip that handles all of that, has internal linear power supplies (LDO) for 3v3 and 5v and it also controls the 3v3 and 5v switching power supplies. The TPS51225 is a good example of that.

    I managed to fix my sons charging port on this exact same laptop (GF65 slim) last weekend.
    It was my first laptop repair.
    I only have a old duck smith solder iron and a cheap 20$ Ali express hot air gun.
    I took a gamble and bought a GF63 slim port as it was $15 cheaper and it fit perfectly.

    Did I understand the verdict correctly? The power supply input/output chip was shorted because it was soldered on with too less solder. That's why the Super IO IC was getting hot. Because it was getting hot it died. Solution: Change Super IO Chip & resolve existing power supply input/output chip

    • @storygoldteam8843
      @storygoldteam8843 Před 4 měsíci +3

      I think it's as following: the Super IO ship git shorted meaning that it's getting hot but at the same time that smaller ship which is supplying the 3.3 also is getting hot becouse the super io is shorted and drowing more current than what the smaller ship is designed for ( mostly the original smaller ship was fine and not shorted yet ), the customer found out that the smaller ship is getting hot and replaced it assuming that it was shorted ( which is mostly not true ) and he didn't solder it properly ( if he did solder it properly it will also start getting hot as the super io is shorted and drowning more current that usually ) , sorin replaced the shorted super io with a working one, no short here but still the 3.3 is missing due the coustomer nor Soldering the smaller ship correctly, so soring soldered the smaller ship correctly and the 3.3 line worked fine supplying power to the super io

      If your hard drives are not faulty yes, you can indeed read the data off your hard drives. If you do have a PC you can plug your hard drives into the mother board sata connector to read it or else you have to get a laptop hard disk casing, plug it into your PC or laptop USB port to access/copy your data.

    Hello everyone, Dell Inspiron 15, PCB dell vegas 15341-1. The laptop does not start, does not provide 3.3V ALWS and 5V ALWS because it does not receive enable from EC (ALWON signal). The ISL circuit provides ACOK for EC but EC no longer provides ALWON for the 3.3V and 5V ALWS source built with TPS51225. EC is supplied with 3V from 3VLDO.
    Please tell me what other conditions can inhibit EC that not to provide ALWON?

All caps around short to ground. I removed mosfet and short was resolved. The mosfet is 81381 model number. Does anyone have this mosfet that I can buy on eBay ? Cheers. And since short is now gone.
