I live in the UK and have been married to a Chinese lady born in Malaysia for the past 43 years. During that time I have visited her country numerous times. We bought an apartment in Melaka West Malaysia 20 years ago for our eventual retirement. This October will be the month we make it happen. We are now both in our seventies. We have no rent or mortgage payments. We either eat local or buy ingredients at the market and cook our own food. We never eat at western restaurants. During our last trip we spent on average GBP500 per month between us. Bus and train fares are inexpensive. Beautiful country, lovely friendly people and the best thing for us, you feel safe walking the streets at night. Where our condo (apartment) is located there are rentals for only $250 per month. That is for a 3 bed 2 bath condo, sauna, gym, swimming pool and 24 hour security. Based on my knowledge of the country you can live comfortably on $1000 to $1500 per month.

$4 Pho in Malaysia is a good deal. I live in Los Angeles County California, a bowl of Pho costs $18 to $20 plus tax and tip. Iced coffee with condensed milk costs over $5. I am glad you enjoy life in SE Asia.

With USD300 you can rent a condominium complete with a swimming pool and a gym in the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur. Maybe cheaper if it's a studio but complete with cooking equipment, fridge and washing machine.

Pho averages about $1,40 a bowl in Laos. The first morning we were in Laos, we went to the local restaurant, had two bowls of soup, water, coffee and it totaled $3.70. LOL!! Come on. I couldnt get one biscuit in America for that kind of money.

    How to survive first year.
    Thailand for beginner expats
How to survive first year frugally.

A vehicle in North America is not $500 a month, way more. $200-$300 for gas, $100 or more for insurance, maintenance $100+++?? Depreciation $300+++??? More like $800 a month for a vehicle. You are not only saving money in SE Asia, you are living a more interesting life, North America really has no culture, unless you include sports and alcohol, I do not consider that "rich culture"., when in Thailand we experience very rich culture. Healthier food in restaurants, in North America the food is toxic in restaurants, and extremely expensive, we are so close to pulling the plug here in Canada, we need to sell our home and setup our investment portfolio, become non residents for tax purposes (no ore high Canadian taxes). Hopefully by next year we are travelling full time, based in Thailand

I sold my truck in the USA. If you calculate the cost for the vehicle, insurance, maintenance, licensing, taxes, fuel, you are definitely $600-$800/month. It’s a burden to own and a weight lifted when you don’t have one. You can almost live in se Asia for what it costs to own a vehicle in the USA

I thought that the taxis at the Airport (Taxi Stands) all used the meter?
In my experience.....the taxis are cheap (well, much cheaper v in the west). Also.....personally, I TRUST the meter. More than, an "off meter driver". LOL.....at least a metered taxi driver won't (or will have less of a chance to) be cheating the Govt (King) out of their tax money.
Anyway, I usually use the Airport Transport Train. I get off at the nearest station. Then, get a taxi to the hotel.
But then, on my first trip to BKK....I got a hotel that was within walking distance to the Airport Transport line. The hotel wasn't all that great. But, "Live and learn".
And......I can also remember a time when (after checking in) I made arrangements at the hotel to have their driver/shuttle take me to the airport on the day that I was leaving. IIRC.....it was cheaper than a Taxi or Grab Driver. Plus......he might have been a relative. LOL.

When I went back to the US in May, my wallet was looked through in Doha for weapons and then in Philadelphia TSA wanted to know what I was going in Thailand and wanted to know if I owned property there. From Udon you can easily get to Nong Khai, a pleasant small city on the Mekong with a long, nice river walking path.
