I played over 6000 online battles in ETW back in the day, funny how ppl think, some of the things he says are just completely wrong.
Dragoons are useless except on grassy flat lands, there are far better selections of light cavalry.
Your general is best used as horse, either normal body guard or a heavy guard horse, use it as mobile inspiration where needed.
Melee should be considered the basis of all warfare, if I see a weak melee army, I just charge in.
Fire by platoon units work great in support roles, in a flank or tied in with other units.
Some tips and tricks of my own:
    HIDE HIDE HIDE
    Should always be ambushing
Howitzers are incredibly powerful, keep a pair hidden, present battle to the foe, send only one or two units to tie up 4 or 5, then bombard everyone, a good trade. Three howitzers are the backbone to any army.
Militia are incredibly useful, they can't shoot for shit but they make for excellent anvil to hammer, melee tie up, or bullet shields, with a guard horse helping them, they will fight to the end, and they are cheap, three units of militia are usually the best.
You only need one or two light troops, maybe three in special circumstances, but I mostly only bring one, mathematically they won't out kill most units so they are not that effective.
You can aim up hill with artillery to shoot 40% farther than normal, three units of puckle guns shooting in tandem up hill, repeating light cannon support from all the way across the map, scares all units.
Sikh warriors can block bullets with their shields.
If you zoom in and listen you can hear hidden unit sound effects, coughing, horses, flags rustling, marching ect.
Mortars and other fixed artillery are useless, straight shot cannons counter howitzers, howitzers are best when hull down (in cover) and can devastate whole units with only a single shot, lime powder shot reduces enemy accuracy, fire rate, and melee defense.
Counter to elephants is the upgraded horse guard, a single horse can cut through five squads of elephants.
Light cavalry are the best shock troops, ambush, and harassment unit. Their stamina allows them to run and fight longer, they counter light troops, and many have special abilities or stats, dragoons suck.
Use your weak troops first to tire out the enemy, then use your elite troops last, fresh and uninjured elite will always beat winded wounded regulars.
In all my experience, I only encounter one truely over powered unit, the native American musketmen, walk hide, 90 in a unit, shoot accurate, far, and quickly, and can fight melee quite well, an all musketmen army can beat anything, except a mostly all musketmen army with THREE generals (mobile moral)
I specialized in native armies, the general plan was half warriors, 3 or 4 musketmen, 2 generals and three horse depending, hide everything one side of the map and put your Generals on the other, the enemy will always believe your troops are with your Generals so they march forward to present battle not knowing a huge force of 1300+ warriors are hiding on their flank, walk hide your musketmen into position, then spring the ambush, maneuver your horse into help and your Generals for moral, victory is sure to follow.
The point here is that a giant melee force, ambushing, will make contact before any real damage can be done, even if the enemy can form up quickly enough to fire, they can't kill enough to stop the tsunami. Don't try this against computer they always know what's hidden and where and will B-line straight for your Generals, but it works great on humans.

    • @chasecharland1160
      @chasecharland1160 Před rokem

@@impala712002 if we do the math, 1 general and 19 muskets is 1755 troops. If you bring artillery and horse you will be outnumbered, so you really have to do some damage.
Could try melee ambush, but you'll have to pull it off perfect and still have at least 1 howitzer to help and some light cav to hit the flanks.
It's a tough one bro, good luck, like I said it's the only OP army in the game as far as I know.
Of course you can also play the moral game, take out his general and flank, arty, shoot, melee all at the same time and try more a mass rout.

Good video. However, this was the 1st result when searching "empire total war strategy", yet this video contained no strategy (war) tips- it exclusively dealt with tactics (battle). Again, I found it interesting, but I don't even play the battles; when it gives me the option to let the computer auto-resolve, I choose that every time. I don't attack unless I have overwhelming force, and I generally defend well, so it is rare that non-rebels attack me (and 95% of the time I can easily handle the rebels)- which all means I can spare myself having to waste time with the battles.
I have more challenging games like "Ultimate General: Gettysburg" if I want to play a tactics game; I play ETW as a strategy game, balancing economics, diplomacy, etc. while trying to race the clock to capture 40-50 territories (Grand Campaign; World Domination is my favorite). I know, someone will read this and say about my play-style "you're playing the game wrong", but like I said, I have other games that focus on tactics, and do it better- I have ETW because it is a less complicated, less time-consuming version of Europa Universalis 4. When I want to start a game that will last weeks, in which I will manage even the tiniest minutia of a country, I play EU4; when I want to play for a day and a half, and have some control but not choose what my general has for breakfast each day, I play ETW; when I want army tactics, I play Ult. Gen. Gettysburg; when I want to play squad tactics, I play Warhammer Quest; I have 153 games on Steam alone, so I have plenty of options, and I can play in whatever style that I like (most games I have can be played unranked solo, so I can even use cheats if I want, without screwing people in multiplayer or ranked solo games).

Unit grouping does work if your just moving a particular body of units, and you not going that damn far.....it bugs if your trying to send them to Mars and back.....but even if it bugs a quick ungroup and a drag to simply get them out of the enemy's fire and then form them up again doesn't hurt....don't even play empire, but I remember most noobs were too insistent on using art to ever take you serious if you told them it wasn't good, but I do like the effort your putting forward at least.

It's not a 1/120 chance if those units surrounding your General have no staying power. It also leaves you with a unit of line infantry that just hangs back. Such cowardice from a general is unacceptable.

Good video man, well thoguht out, but i do have some problems.
First: You spelled my fucking name wrong. It is Skritshell not SkritShell
Second: One can also spread their lights, or any other unit out by using the " ] " hotkey and decrease the width of the formation using the " [ " hotkey.
Third: If one puts their general body guard in a line unit, never have that particular line unit on the flanks of one's formation or in the center, were it would absorb riffle fire, or be in the melee if a cavalry charge was to ensue. Instead place it on the innermost position of the line on one's flank, or better yet place it in the center of the line formation on a flank such as X-Y-X were X is a line unit and Y is the line unit with your general.
Forth: Never use unit grouping unless one is grouping and moving their entire army, it will just glitch out.
    Other then that, great video!
