I see absolutely no reason for the rivets that hold the collar on the can. If an assistant fails to remove one, he’s legitimately stuck in there with a limited air supply and can drown or suffocate.

You'd only need a trick to open the outer locks, by getting in brimming full, he displaces enough water to keep his head in the upper part which is air. You'd have a long time without too much co2 buildup.

Because it's an escape illusion based on objects that were tempered with, like fake cuffs and - most of all - a barrel with a removable neck piece. If you were to see how the magician escapes easily from a seemingly solid and locked steel canister, it wouldn't be an illusion. If you want to be tricked you gotta follow the rules set to you by the magician.
