- Another ride along road test of my 1980 ERF B series with a mate driving, new diff with a better ratio just fitted (4.88:1 from 6.17:1) loaded trailer to see how she performed, turns out pretty well. Cummins NHC 250, Fuller 9 Speed, Eaton 19120 single drive with rear lift tag axle.

love the sound two quite are today's trucks. Used to go with my dad in his C series ERF with straight pipe but that had the 290 14ltr your ears were ringing after 12 hours
I dont care about the scania fanboys .... nothing sounds better than a Cummins on full angry.
Spent many an happy hour in the passenger seat of one of these, listening to the Gardner 240 and my Dad shifting a Fuller (not sure that i have spelt that right) roadranger. That was about the time the weight limit increased. I recall my Dad saying that the fitters took the governers off the gardner engines to try to get more power from then, but all that happened was that they blew up. Nestle's then went to ERF's with 290 and 325 Cummins, he loved driving those. And even as a passenger you could tell the difference with the turbo chargers. A 40ft trailer loaded with coffee was hauled with ease. Oh and im pretty sure with a roadranger as well, which i think are Eaton now ? Anyway great vid thank you.
Good film ! hope to see more of it ;-)
One my first trucks rocket went on roll great days
Nice sound!
Who needs a radio with ref symphony orchestra playing
That jake brake is music to my ears
Mate of mine Stuart Payne has a lot of ERF ECs
Fantastic.
Sweet 👍👌
I never knew it has Jake brakes for the B series Cummins engine
The truck is an ERF B series, fitted with a Cummins NHC 250 14 litre
yes some 220 cummins had jake breaks in the 70s
Can't say iv seen many double drives! Looks mint tho!!!
Not double drive it’s a tag axel
Sounds nice but as a driver, you’d soon get pissed off with that!
back in day you got used to it. Nowadays trucks are 2 quite. Back then you could tell what truck make model and engine it had in it before you saw it.
Only if your gay !
😂 getting pissed off with it already !
Sounds Gorgeous FairPlay is the NHC 250 a 14 litre non Turbo or is it the 12 litre supercharged engine?
The NHC250 is a 14 litre or 855ci without turbo or supercharger, your thinking of a NH275 that was basically a supercharged version of the NH220 👍
@@MGWilliams that’s it spot on couldn’t quite remember my mate is a Cummins engineer and an ERF nut he would have known 👍👍👍
Hi I have a 1980 erf with cummins
Where is the jake brake activated switch etc
On off switch on the left lower in the bank of 6 on the dash and a floor mounted activation switch. 3 stage switch on dash panel.
On the waltzers we had a 8 lega b series ERF with 2 50 Cummins the man we both it from opens up the engine it carried the hevy bottom half hevy of the waltzers I who's in with my twin brother with wthe waltlzer center it who's dion 80 mill a houre
Is this the 250 with no turbo
Yes, NHC 250 last of the big non turbos
🇬🇧😁
Whats the gross weight on her?
Can't remember, probably about 35 tonne train weight I'd say
@@MGWilliams she'll like a drink especially using high revs, in fact it's all high revs, pleased he dont work for me.
How much can it tow?
It's plated 38000kg train weight so less the unit weight (around 8 tonne) roughly 30 tonne I'd say. As it has a tag axle added it can pull that on a tandem trailer where without it, it'd need a tri axle trailer.
@@MGWilliams is it the gearing and diff that help it cause the hp does not seem much
@@kenmichigwan234 back in 1980 you could buy a 240 Gardner a 250 Cummins or a 265 Roller powered B series 40 ton unit (design weight) all were standard power options. No speed limiters meant gears would see you at a top speed of around 60/65 mph but with the power to pull via gearing around a 5 to 1 diff ratio, nowadays with big power engines a 2.5 to 1 diff ratio can be used and speeds are kept down with limiters. This 250 will pull it but it requires thought about your next move as a missed gear or a lazy moment looking ahead will make you suffer. It's just how it was, a 290 was big power back then. Remember this was around the transition time from 32 tonne to 38 tonne
@@MGWilliams man so educational i was not born in that era am in my early 20s so thanks mahn very informative i appreciate hope to drive one one day
