  • The M2 Pro Mac Mini is probably one of the best things that has happened to the creative industry. The size, the performance and the price are unbeatable. I wanted to put this Mac into the hands of some talented individuals to see how it fits their workflow and how the M2 Rpo . So, let's hear their side of the story :)

@@somnia3423 Not necessarily. I daily drove a Mac from 2013-2021, it was a great alternative Linux when things were more hit & miss with those OSes. One of the best selling points was the open-source ecosystem of macports and homebrew. I did a lot of engineering analyses on my Mac. I think software is one of the key factors for which OS you end up heavily attached to. For e.g., I worked with a Windows based software that was proprietary closed-source and that meant I had to have a Windows machine too. As soon as the Fortran code was released open-source I compiled a copy of the application for OS X.

@@dracobutwhatever8611 I'm still struggling to figure out what makes a Mac better to code on than a windows or Linux PC. Writing code isn't all that resource consuming, and while local compiling is a thing, if you're in a professional setting you probably aren't doing that locally. You aren't testing your apps in a way that Mac provides any advantage, VM's and more modernly containers run on anything.
15 years ago I preferred a Mac for coding, scripting, production work because they had a far more functional workspace for multiple large monitors, so lots of terminal / SSH and utility windows open at once, but today? I hate windows 11, but from a productivity standpoint it's just as good / functional as MacOS, and Linux is right there alongside it, it's really just desktop environment preference and tooling availability.

LMG and MKBHD still tend to top the charts, but they also are buried under more frequent release work flows, LMG has had to forego some quality for quantity, I think HC works harder at lighting and composition, scene building, the overall vibe in some of HC's content is unmatched, especially Dmitry's and Eber's, some of Dmitry's shots are so good I get goosebumps.

It's almost like ARM architecture is more efficient than x86 processors, but less versatile.

@@achannelhasnoname5182 Personally, I think those downsides only matter in edge cases though. The majority of people and use cases will be better served by the efficiency of ARM. Most people don't keep systems for longer than 5-10 years and if your economic situation is so dire that you can't upgrade in 5-10 years, then I'd argue that the inability to upgrade your RAM is a non issue and the least of your worries if we're being honest.
Edit: Even in the desktop PC space, when we're talking upgrades, it's all relative and in these longer time frames of a decade or so, it's kind of irrelevant. Even with a desktop PC, you're forced to replace all the internal components, including the motherboard, past a certain point for major upgrades anyway. These platforms don't last very long. AMD's AM4 platform was an exception and even then it died in 6 years. It's impossible to future proof anything, especially when we're looking at time spans longer than 5 years.

    • @27Binx72
      @27Binx72 Před rokem +1

Maybe the solution will be something like what framework is doing and just have user replaceable modules when an upgrade is needed vs trashing the entire thing at the end of a device's usable life. Even then though, you're looking at a desktop like lifespan for mobile devices. Eventually you'll have to replace all the internals for major long term upgrades.

The 4070/A4000 ada makes for some interesting possibilities in the near future but adding in even a 4070 would bring power draw up by 10 watts at idle and 70 at load and it wont be as pretty as a mac, but you can also swap ram and SSD's for instance.

For audio capture and processing, it's all about memory and cache latencies/sizes. Less about processing power and pretty much nothing about graphics--though, being able to drive multiple displays in 4K is a huge plus. Most modern 6 core and 8 core processors can handle many plug-ins at a time with ease. Again, it is the memory and latency that is the issue most of the time.
In my experience, audio workstations are the more misunderstood types of builds/systems there are. Plenty of woo surrounding them, as well as unnecessary upsells.
For the size of the Mini and it's base price, the Mac Mini for audio is pretty OK, but nothing special. More than OK if tech and building your own is something that you have little experience with or desire to do. Otherwise, build your own for less (and even better specs). Plenty of info online on how to build an audio based workstation without buying what you don't need at all. If you're a Logic user, then yes, you'll need this of course.
This all considered, the M2 Mac Mini is a BEAST!

I need to use a Remote Desktop for high speed trading. I currently have a 2017 Macbook Pro 13 Inch Two Thunderbolt 3 port 2.3 GHz Deal Core Intel Core i5. And need to purchase another computer to work with. If speed and clarity are really important, what would you purchase; a new macbook, a new Apple tablet perhaps; should I replace my computer as well? and is there a remote desktop that is known for being the best? thanks for any assistance you can provide, and keep up the great work.

In the UK the base m2 pro only comes with 512gb storage. Its an extra £200 to 1TB, raising the price to £1,599. I'm also a photographer. Had the og m1 mini with 1tb. and went back to windows recently. The key problem is storage. I would say for anyone doing serious photo work with lots of projects, you need at least 2TB, and at £1,999 for this config. (Yes Apple charging £600 over base for 1.5TB), you are better off with a windows pc at £1,599+ prices. Another problem i had with the mini is if you need more space you need an external tb4 drive, which cost £££.
Also your review is bias. The photographer never did give the specs of his pc. So really the watcher can't make an informed decision.
Plus your 'review' doesn't consider performance against an equivalent priced pre-built (I know! but some people don't have the time to build their own) tower system or sff pc.
Truth is for the use cases you promote, you really don't need more than an i5 with say a 3060 and at least 32GB Ram. For £1,599. For that money a have a system with 4TB+ and a 3060 will be faster.

It is tech advancement. You are living in the past where you think these features were important. They are no longer relevant. We have seen from ARM in tablets and phones that they do not need to be serviced apart from replacing the battery. Gaming is an issue due to MS's inability to make WOA usable. Once MS gets their ARM software in the 21st century, gaming on Macs will be great via BootCamp or a VM. That will also solve your Windows compatibility. As for upgrades, we cannot upgrade smartphones and tablets that can cost as much or even more, so you need to compare like with like; ARM is not X86.

Apple’s computers suck at playing PC games, expandability, price to performance and hardware customization. Don’t compare a smartphone phone to a computer. A smartphone is too small to upgrade with any practicality. Not the case with computers. If I want to add 6 TBs of internal storage to my computer’s storage I can do that for less than $150. You can’t on any Apple computer. If my cpu dies I can replace it whenever I want myself. If I want more RAM I can swap it out in less than 2 minutes. Electric cars are made less serviceable on purpose because they want to control your product after they sell it to you.
Modular PCs are going nowhere as nobody owns the PC market. Even if Microsoft was insane enough to try we would just migrate to Linux. Self serviceable cars are going nowhere. Yeah, even AMD who hasn't gone big/little yet, their mobile 7945HX is a beast, 7940HS is no slouch either with some serious GPU horsepower, the Radeon 780M in the Ryzen 7940HS blows the doors off of an RTX 1650 and GTX 1050 Ti discrete GPU's and it's an APU. We all know what the Ryzen 7900X and 7950/7950X are capable of, but no one other than Divinci is extracting much out of the Ryzen 7000 iGPU. Part of the problem is that HEVC/H.264 will remain Intel dominated, as even though AMD updated AMF, Quick Sync is so far ahead with HEVC/H.264, but other encoding like IntraFrame (like ProRes or DNx) and RAW (BRAW or RED), AMD is beginning to pull past Intel Quick sync with iGPU/APU performance. As long as the applications make use of updated AMF, the 7940HS is likely competitive with M2 Pro today, and it's feasible that the 7945HX could be competitive with M2 Ultra, but again it will be dependent on the devs of Resolve, Premiere and others to put the time in to optimize for it, and they do that for Apple because Apple owns so much of the production / content market, and up until recently, Intel PC's made up 90%of the PC community and AMD Ryzen only really just got iGPU's with Ryzen 7000, no one wanted to bother when it was just the Ryzen mobile APU's and a couple of Ryzen 5 G SKU's to optimize for, market was too small. It's my fear is that while AMD has captured serious marketshare with Ryzen over the past 5 years, the majority of Ryzen desktop users are Ryzen 3000 and 5000 series without integrated graphics, there likely won't be enough for anyone to want to bother for quite some time.
