Man I like how you make something out of what normal guys would say it’s to far gone. You’re a really good for the environment. Reclaiming recycling and making it functional again. From steam to modern day. True craftsmanship.
I'm sitting here with 2 feet of snow outside and below zero temps. Thank you Jonathan for great videos to keep me occupied until the weather warms up a bit, although I did go out and split wood, LOL. As soon as I got the notification, I watched. You're right about the light bulbs. Then it moved to automobile manufacturers by way of "planned obsolescence". My advice on the bed project, go with your gut feeling on those cylinders. Go big!! I've been watching you for many years, and you've always been correct in your reasoning. Why? Because you're a mechanical genius!!
Looks like you're moving right along on it. Keep up the good work. Can't wait to see your finish product and keep them videos coming. Enjoy watching them
Planned Obsolescence? Planned obsolescence describes a strategy of deliberately ensuring that the current version of a given product will become out of date or useless within a known time period. This proactive move guarantees that consumers will seek replacements in the future, thus bolstering demand.
A designer engineer my Dad, spoke frequently regarding built-in obsolescence. But many of the machines he designed and built are still running today built in the early 1970's and continue long after his death in 1985
Looking good, Jonathan. I think the phrase you're looking for is "Planned Obsolescence" - building failure into a product so you have to buy another one or repair it sooner.
You had me laughing when you said something about your weld . You are way better at it than I am . If that's a bad one , I'm screwed . I'm getting better , but I thought it looked good enough to hold well . Looks good , & you are the right man for the job . If it isn't right , you will be fixing , or replacing , it . Take care , Jonathan !
Excellent video Johnathan W also roll back tow truck flatbed come together on for sure like it to you planning to and make looking so nice 👌 too! Also remember music 🎶 had video at home in past buy late man and was first watching you on CZcams videos was so cool to!
Holy smokes, that truck frame was bent but good! All I can't think of is it's a good thing he wasn't going the other way or the fuel tank would have gotten it, and it would be a different story. Great work Jonathan and tks for letting us watch your progress.
You certainly know how to make a proper truck. You're a good man to help out a friend in need. You are certainly right about the planned insolence of equipment, but what these manufacturers don't seem to get is that a good truck is supposed to be able to be maintained and repaired not replaced like a Kleenex tissue.
Engineered obsolescence? We made thin wall injection molded nylon alternator bobbins for an automobile company when 60,000 warranties were effective. A larger diameter and wider one for the V8 and a narrow smaller diameter for the V6 and 4 cylinders applications. A new 4 valve cylinder engine had their alternators failing about 65,000 miles, no problems with the V6 applications. The higher rpm little 4 was stopping faster when the driver turned off the key which let the windings try to remain in motion, the bent wire termination would eventually break from flexing. Our customer wanted 90,000 miles without alternator problems. We could add plastic to form a wire groove to support the exit bend. Made the mold changes moving the failure rate for that issue past 120,000 miles.
I think you build to last and do it well, preserving what would be thrown away today. You were talking about things not built to last, that is 'Designed Obsolescence". If it last too long you don't buy new. Thank you for keeping the old working like new. Your new roll back will last longer than new. Thanks for sharing.
Any one that picks on your work has never done any of this work, personally your machining skills included are perfect in every way, as you always come out with a solution
Your welds don't look bad at all. I was a professional welder in my younger days and certified in vertical up and overhead using mig, .045 dual shield and stick. Your weld just looks like a normal vertical up weld.
Another good one. Light globes. If you run them at 10% less voltage they will double their life but give less light out. To give nice bright lights they are therefore run at the higher level. Manufacturers can also make them with more/less Lumens per Watt with a corresponding effect on life. LEDs also can have a bright but shorter life by "thrashing" them as per cheap torches and house globes. The brightness of many house LED globes is governed by a programming resistor(s) so the LEDS are the same in a 6 Watt as a 9 Watt, just the resistors change.
Designed obsolesces is what it's called. Car companies have been doing that for ever. Little places that hold water or salt/sand. Shows up quicker here in the road salt zone of our part of the country.
Johnathan, it’s a very good man that can help another get back on track. Life is tough and today is even tougher. You will be paid back in full. The good Lord will see to that.🙏🏽🇺🇸
4:13 Planned Obsolescence I believe is what you are talking about, although the case could be made for the use of thinner materials on the truck you are restoring as it would be beneficial for an operator with a budget. Less material in manufacture could have meant a lower cost per unit when new, and less weight over the time of ownership could mean a savings in fuel costs.
Well glad you have Martin helping you and it's looking good Johnboy can't wait to see it when it's finished so keep the videos coming in on the work and thanks for sharing your videos Johnboy.
The term you were thinking of as relating to premature product failure such as light bulbs is 'Planned obsolescence'..Manufacturers have been denying that for decades BUT............
Another great video from "The adventures of Jonathan" In the next episode Jonathan finds some jet engines from a 747 plane and decides to give the new rollback some " boost"😂😂 Jonathan, much respect to be able to fabricate your own equip.and the peace in knowing it will do it's job👍
Thanks for the music link Martin is amazing Been lookin for some new music Kinda in a rut Love your stuff Great engineer/ fabricator I could take some more steam engine When you get the chance
Armchair welder !!! HA HA HA HA You FUNNY EH !! Cylinder > use wut yer comfortable wit EH !! Thanks fer the update, lookin forward to more !! WAVIN a hand EH. P.S. Yer breathin is soundin better. WISH mine did !!
Planned Obsolescence was the term you were looking for. This piece of equipment is so old and so rusty. The original design was so so at best anyway, and every feature of it has been Mickey moused to death. This thing has had a long life of nobody gave a hoot. I know you can fix it, and I know the price of steel is so insanely high, parts that would have gone straight to the scrap metal bin years ago are getting reviewed over and over. I wish we could just buy fresh steel if we want it.
it is called planned obsolescence. I won't complain about the welds but i do not like that they make the hinges single shear. I have a dynamic bed that my friend used to own when the hinges went bad we put a small dumptruck hinge double shear on it.
Aw that frame ain't bent that badly, the train was only makin 4 mile an hr.. but, it's a train. Maybe if u have a t-boned bent all up recovery to do, leave it like that )lol( nice work. incredible, really.
Man I like how you make something out of what normal guys would say it’s to far gone. You’re a really good for the environment. Reclaiming recycling and making it functional again. From steam to modern day. True craftsmanship.
The "before and after" on this truck is going to be spectacular.
Jonathan rebuilds his equipment to do the work and last, as opposed to the OEM's "planned obsolescence". Those are solid welds, btw.👍
Haha, i came to write it too late.
Thanks for making these videos, I really enjoy them. Good to see someone still takes pride in what he does
That welding you have done is way better than anything I welded - and I welded plenty of arm chairs….king of “arm chair welders”
I'm just a farmer type welder 😁But it looked good to me... Thanks for all you do Jonathan! Makes my day every time you post.

Reason, critical thinking and common sense….thank you for confirming those still work.
Jonathan, the term you refer to why stuff is not designed to last is "planned obsolescence"
I'm by no means a professional welder. But I have no doubt it will hold great job thanks 😊
Looking good, Jonathan. I think the phrase you're looking for is "Planned Obsolescence" - building failure into a product so you have to buy another one or repair it sooner.

I think the term your were looking for is Engineered Obsolescence, that's when things are engineered to eventually fail
I think you build to last and do it well, preserving what would be thrown away today.

Thank you for keeping the old working like new. Your new roll back will last longer than new.

Jonathan the phrase you were looking for the same one as my wife says applies to me: "Built in obsolescence".
Okay you set the hook ..lol and you’ll keep us waiting and slowly reel us in . Nice work on all the repairs as usual.
Shawn RR
Anyone who would criticize your welds , don’t know welding . Looking good as always .
Your an amazing guy everything is easy very talented man
Any one that picks on your work has never done any of this work, personally your machining skills included are perfect in every way, as you always come out with a solution
I needed this, I’ve been stuck at home because of the snow.
Nothing to but I LOVE your videos!! Thank you
I’m really enjoying this build. Keep up the good work.
For a armchair welder, it's looking good
Ya he got me chucklin wit that one too EH !!
WAVIN a hand
Recycle, refit and reuse. Good update & progress. FYI, your welding looks fine to me!!
Awesome always cool stuff always thanks
This is another great video. I have been watching a very long time. Best wishes and stay Southern.
Coming along nicely Jonathan
I really enjoy all the different types of things and how you do them.
Your ability to explain what you are doing is great .
Keep the videos coming.

great content!!always happy to see your videos pop up!! keep it up!!
👍👌👏 again and as always.

I wish I was young. I would love to do the stuff you do. I used to do it.
Designed obsolesces is what it's called. Car companies have been doing that for ever. Little places that hold water or salt/sand. Shows up quicker here in the road salt zone of our part of the country.
Always learning fascinating stuff from your videos, keep'em comin' Sir!
Good product placement for Pepsi. You should be drinking water not soda. Thank you for the video sir.
Loving watching this build come together 👍👍
Has anyone responded with "Planned Obsolescence"? I think this is what you were thinking when discussing how stuff is built intentionally crappy.
Looks. Like. You’ve. Got it. Figured. Out. Thanks
It's coming along nicely.
Excellent
Looking great.
The term is built in obsolescence. You're looking good.
Planned obsolescence is the way everything seems to be made nowadays
Johnathan, it’s a very good man that can help another get back on track. Life is tough and today is even tougher. You will be paid back in full. The good Lord will see to that.🙏🏽🇺🇸
Gonna be a good truck 👍
Thanks for the video Jonathan.
Them welds look better than mine would....👍
Great work man 👏

You're the man Jonathan W!
Great work as always.
The term used to describe something that’s designed to wear out, break and be replaced instead of rebuilt and repaired is Built-in Obsolescence.
👍🏻🍻
Early in the video you talked about "planned obsolescence." Products engineered to last a limited amount of time.
Looking forward for you finishing it up. Thanks for the update. 👍🇺🇸
The term you were thinking of as relating to premature product failure such as light bulbs is 'Planned obsolescence'..Manufacturers have been denying that for decades BUT............
Looking good. Y'all take care.
Hi Johnathan, Some Great Ideas and I Like The Way You Are Doing Things Right. And You're Right They Want You To Buy New ! And Throw Away the Old .
Another great video from
"The adventures of Jonathan"
In the next episode Jonathan finds some jet engines from a 747 plane and decides to give the new rollback some " boost"😂😂
Jonathan, much respect to be able to fabricate your own equip.and the peace in knowing it will do it's job👍
Jon, I think you’re speaking of “planned obsolescence”.
I believe the words you were looking for are built in absolescence.
rollback looks good
That is good ❤
Nice job Jonathan!
Bonus footage!
good progress
Hi Jonathan, could you make a video explaining how the deck slides. I’m interested in fabricating my own but and stuck on the sliding feature.
Good looking welds and a cold Pepsi 😅
👍👍
Big
That's saying you were looking for is planned obsolescence!! Not a good ethics!! Your a great Fabricator!! All the best from Surrey BC Canada
Thanks for the music link
Martin is amazing
Been lookin for some new music
Kinda in a rut
Love your stuff
Great engineer/ fabricator
I could take some more steam engine
When you get the chance
The expression is "planned obsolescence". Same with the new cars. Built to wear out.
👍
Planned obsolescence is the term you were looking for.
Planned obsolescence is what you are talking about. They build it to wear out!
Bend on the locks could be from using the wheel loft with the bed empty.
Armchair welder !!! HA HA HA HA You FUNNY EH !! Cylinder > use wut yer comfortable wit EH !! Thanks fer the update, lookin forward to more !!
WAVIN a hand EH.

The issues with your welds is obvious. Yer drinking Pepsi instead of Coke. LOL Lookin' good there Kemosabe!
it is called planned obsolescence. I won't complain about the welds but i do not like that they make the hinges single shear. I have a dynamic bed that my friend used to own when the hinges went bad we put a small dumptruck hinge double shear on it.

The phrase you were thinking of was planned obsolescence.
Looking good,....4WD wrecker - plans to give it some attention at some point? 👍
Planned obsolescence
Planned obsolescence my friend.
Jonathan, saw another roll back bed on marketplace, in Fayetteville, today... If you're looking for another one.
Engendered obsolescence.
Planned obcelesence....
They taught me that at chrysler research and developement training school.
