About 14 years ago, a buddy and I were listening to Ted Nugent’s “Stranglehold” at work, and he said to me, “Tool should cover this song, they’d be perfect.” Now here we are.
that should be the goal of a cover imo. To change it into something new, rather than copy the original. to be fair, people like Max Niessl and LeoBassCovers serve a great purpose by transcribing songs to the exact, finest details in order to help others learn, but I think beyond that official covers should attempt to twist and redefine the original song. A great example of this is "sounds" cover of Black Hole Sun. Completely different style, but the same underlying concept czcams.com/video/YXT3ZDbKaik/video.html
+Tim Toots Not necessarily. 1997 wasn't entirely to my liking. Same for one of the more recent tours since I last caught them in 2010. But, overall, DC excels where others fail simply because he clearly takes the time to tune his kit properly to produce those amazing tones. Even his cymbals set him apart from most for their clarity.
Jerry Dodge yes used to listen to Third Eye put my head down by the stereo during the head change and I felt three separate levels in my brain all spinning simultaneously in opposite directions pretty cool
This is Adam Jones hommage to another guitarist that understands Tone! That L5 or Byrdland that the Nuge played way back circa 76' was fucking incredible. Got you in a Stranglehold, and ill bust yah face!
That might be the best snare sound I have heard in my entire life. Very similar to Sean Kinney (Alice in Chains) drummer during the "Facelift" era live,
It’s incredible hearing King Buzzo on this as well, his tone fits in so well with Tool. Seems like a match made in heaven! On a side note, if none of you have ever seen it, I’d highly recommend looking up the photo of Adam Jones, Buzz Osborne, and Mike Patton on a fairground ride together. It’s great!

I've seen Tool a couple of times live and both times it amazing me how good they sound live. They put on a great live show as well. Maynard never disappoints.
Maynard says to us hicks down in Alabama... "Ala FUCK YEAH Bama!!!" We all hoped it was because we all knew the songs by heart word for word and couldn't help ourselves. He could've been pissed by it. All I know, one of the top 3 best nights of my entire life.
Tool does amazing covers. Everyone is a tribute to the original song as they make their remake their own. I always thought that In-A-Gada-Da Vida would make a great remake. Lots of music opportunity for the band to play and layer and Maynard could update it by singing the original lyrics "In the garden of Eden".
Eric Bradford you know I’ve thought about that with Black Sabbath’s war pigs. I’d like to see Tool throw a psychedelic vibe to that song, and they could also use the original lyrics from the first version, Walpurgis. I think that would be really awesome.
Have listened to Tool since the mid 90's, before local radio stations took Jesus' fucking whistle and made it a 'giant whistle'. Never been a diehard fan, but this jams.

I had always wondered why no major bands seem to cover Stranglehold. Between the original and this version is is probably pretty intimidating to take on. Foo Fighters and Metallica should give it a shot. They are two legendary bands that also have their own sounds and know their way around a cover.
This isn't hundred percent accurate. Look at all of the Bob Dylan covers in the 60's and early 70's. Though they didn't play solo acoustic guitar and harmonica they did follow the original songs almost to a "T", just with a band and more instrumentation. The originals were extremely well written songs and there was no real need to change them. But Dylan was a bad singer, mediocre guitarist and often recorded without a and or with a band who at best were just average. Therefore, Johnny Cash or Jimi Hendrix doing a Dylan song instantly made it sound 20x better, like "All Along the Watchtower" by Hendrix, or "It ain't Me" by Cash. Both of those songs are extremely iconic, but not the Dylan versions. His versions are objectively worse, and I think he knew this. I think it's why he often worked with other artists, especially ones he had admired like Cash, because he knew they could elevate his songs to another level.
Wait, Maynard actually sings in spanish, i didn't notice all these years 1:25 "conoces el gusto baby" - You know the taste baby 1:30 "adentro como (something), sabes que voy a decir" - inside like (something hard to understand) you know what i'm going to say
