Bought my 2007 Fatboy, while contracting in Iraq through the military purchase program. Absolutely love it. Best bike, I've ever rode. I've set it up with all the detachables. It looks a lot like a Heritage Classic with everything on it, so it looks awesome all dressed up or I can strip it down and it still looks awesome. I buy into the whole WWII theme of the bike. At the time Harley was having disputes with the Japanese markets and investors. Some of the points he doesn't make in the video include the five point star that is a USA military symbol. In '07 when they added the holes to the wheels, Harley called them .50 cal. holes. which was the same caliber of machine guns that were on the bombers for defense. Awesome bike, awesome story, all 'round awesome and just as American as I am.

The Harley Fat Boy is my absolute favourite motorcycle. Only a Ducati can compare, for me, and even they are a distant second. Fat Boys simply rock. And it's their simplicity that is their most beautiful and iconic feature - simplicity and raw power, especially with the optional, massive 114 cu.in. engine. Thank you for this wonderful tribute!
As to rumours and speculation, I say we just drop it entirely. Miles Davis was a wife-beater, but I still love his music. I just don't want to think about his personal life. I doubt Harley-Davidson were commemorating a bomber plane, but even if they did, I don't want to think about it! I'd rather think about Arnie defending humanity on his bad-ass Fat Boy, thank you very much. Let's consider the subject closed.
Gossip is for pre-teens. I understand you felt the need to address that rumour, and that's perfectly fine, but let's just let it die a quiet and peaceful death. It's time to move on. Fat Boys are the best! Man, I love this bike!
My first Harley was a Sportster, which I still love. The next, and probably the last one I will ever buy, because I plan to never part with it, will definitely be a Fat Boy. Harley cruisers are the best, to my view, and Soft Tail cruisers are the best of the best. The Fat Boy is the king of them all.

  • @mr.e129
    @mr.e129 Před 5 lety +84

Okay, I have to add some important context to the story of the 1990 Fat Boy that was absent in this video.
The story begins back in 1969, when Harley-Davidson was looking for funding to expand their production to cut back on wait times at dealerships. Despite their horrible reliability in those days, they had a diehard base that would ride nothing else but a Harley and waited up to two years for new bikes. Around 50% of their bikes had failure issues fresh off the showroom floor. Dealers knew that once a bike rolled off the floor, there was a good chance it'd be back that same day with a serious issue. But the diehards stayed loyal despite this, hence the demand staying higher than the supply. So, along came AMF to buy up HD and provide the capital needed for them to expand their production.
Fast forward 12 years and now it's 1981. HD, along with the rest of the US, was looking the aftermath of the fuel & energy crisis' square in the face. HD was hit with a triple-whammy - their reliability issues still haunted them, the fuel & energy crisis meant people weren't interested in buying bikes with big motors, and the imported small-displacement Japanese and European bikes were comparatively cheap, reliable, and fun which drew in a crowd of potential buyers from HD's doorstep (plus, the stigma of Harley's and the people who rode them over past few decades didn't help either). AMF/HD was facing bankruptcy and AMF wanted out, so they looked for a buyer who'd take HD off their hands but they had one problem - nobody wanted to buy. HD bike sales were in the toilet and no investors in their right minds wanted to take on such a risky business endeavor.
Thankfully for us, there was a group of investors who weren't in their right minds. Vaughn Beals, Willie G. Davidson, and 11 other then-senoir execs at AMF/HD decided to put their money together and buy HD back from AMF. But they didn't do this without a plan. They knew it was going to take some serious overhauling, redesigning, and marketing to fix their problem and keep HD afloat.
So they got to work overhauling and retooling their production facilities as well as improving their quality control. In 1983, they went to President Reagan and had a 5-year tariff placed on imported bikes that were over 699cc, effectively protecting big bikes made in the US from foreign competition. This wasn't a shortsighted move - it was a strategic one that set the stage for what was about to come.
One year later, in 1984, they unveiled the Evolution motor, a motor that would become known as one of HD's greatest in terms of reliability. Thanks to the improved quality control and JIT inventory combined with this new, very reliable motor, the failure rates of new bikes dropped drastically from around 50% to just 2%. This in addition to the new Softail design caused sales to skyrocket; they were so good, in fact, that HD actually went back to President Reagan and had the tariff lifted ahead of schedule. Just those three years, from 1984 when the Evo rolled out to 1987 when the tariff was lifted, were enough to bolster their sales and revitalize their presence in the market. You'll hear people claim that the tariff saved HD, but the truth is that they saved themselves. The tariff only lit the stage before they rolled out a new era of Harley-Davidson's from behind the curtains.
Now, if you look at the imported bikes prior to 1984, when the Evo made its way into the public eye and the reliability began to compete with the imported bikes, you'll notice that there were very few cruiser-style bikes that resembled the Harley's. Most of the import bikes were more of a neutral riding position or a forward-leaning sports bike position. It wasn't until Harley had its newfound success that they also had newfound copycat cruisers popping up, particularly from Japan. Now imagine being Willie G in 1987 - you just went all-in on a gamble to save the company that your grandfather founded, you actually succeeded in saving it, and now those import manufacturers were trying to steal that away from you? I can't think of much else that could possibly piss me off more. And I have a feeling that Willie G felt the same way.....
So what could somebody in his position do to drop the biggest metaphoric F-bomb possible on the Japanese manufacturers? What could he do to make a statement about American pride and not only capture our ability to overcome adversity and dominate the competition, but simultaneously capture the essence of the American spirit? Willie G, THE chief styling officer, let the creative juices flow. He meticulously funneled that emotion into a new motorcycle design.
Calling back to a time when American pride was arguably at its highest, he took styling cues from our WWII-era military. He took inspiration from a moment when the US sent two messages to Japan that we can't be dominated, which was sent by air mail via the USAAF. The two planes that delivered those two messages were the Enola Gay and the Bockscar, B-29 Superfortresses. With a silver monochromatic paint scheme from frame to fender that mirrored the B-29's and enough rivets to make even Rosie grin, his new creation started to take form. To highlight the explosiveness of this bike's statement, he took another cue from the US military. There are many colors and symbols that represent many different types of ammunition, one of which is a single yellow band painted on ammunition such as missiles and bombs. This single yellow band indicates that the ammunition is a high explosive live round. 7 of these bands worked their way onto this new bike, from the cylinder heads to the ignition switch. But most notably, you'll find one around the redesigned Harley-Davidson emblem on the sides of the tank.....which looks reminiscent of the USAAF emblem. One of the final strokes of genius on his masterpiece was coming up with a name, one that on its own doesn't sound like much (for the sake of marketing) but one that when all the dots are connected clearly spells out the message. The 'Fat Boy' name came from the names of the two messages we sent to the Land of the Rising Sun back in 1945.....the Fat Man and the Little Boy. The icing on the cake was the timing of the release. 1990 was 45 years after the US delivered its message, which coincidentally happened in '45.
Of course, Harley-Davidson has publicly denied the story behind this bike time and time again because it would be political suicide for them. Even Snopes has tried to delegitimize the story, but gives practically no real, good explanation as to why else the bike ended up exactly the way it did (see below). But if you do a little digging, you'll find people have asked Willie G himself about it and he's given them a different answer from the official one.
Only 4,440 were made in 1990 and it only came in one color scheme (which was only available in 1990) - the monochromatic silver with yellow bands (which dubbed its nickname 'The Gray Ghost'); this was intentional because the bike was, by all intents and purposes, a statement and a trophy. It was Willie G's ode to the time when Harley-Davidson won, a testament to the fact that the American spirit will always overcome adversity, and an icon that will forever be a staple of the motorcycle world.
One thing is certain - the Fat Boy is and forever will be a special piece in the gallery of Willie G's creations, and I know he'll hold that trophy proudly until the day he dies.

@@user-tm9cq1zf2w I feel like it's splitting hairs; the Air Force division of the Army existed since the early 1900's as the US Army Air Force (USAAF). The only thing that changed in 1947 was that division being distinguished as its own branch of the military instead of being part of the Army. I use the USAAF and USAF interchangeably in this context because the purpose of its existence and its function didn't change in 1947. Whether it was the USAAF that existed in 1945 or the USAF, it was still members of the United State's Air Force that completed the mission.

Bike week, Daytona 1991 the Motor Company gave Peter Fonda the use of a 91 Black Fatboy to ride and participate in the bike parade in which Peter put 200 miles on the bike. Tampa Harley sold the bike as a demo that had 200 miles on it. The new owner purchased the bike, tore it down and dumped alot of money to set it up for show. He sold it to an older guy who kept it in his living room and occasionally rode it. I purchased the bike in 2002 with only 19000 miles on it and still own it. A year after I bought it John Sachs , my riding buddy and mechanic set up the current S&S 124 INCH motor with big valves and head work putting out 151 ft pounds of torque winning several horse power shootouts in South Florida in 2003. Yeap, they did NOT know what they were doing, real glad the Harley family bought them back. I remember when the "Fat Bob" and " Low Rider" came out in the mid to late 70's, you almost could not tell the difference other than having the names on the gas tanks, a couple of friends bought both and they rode well, don't know what happened to the guys or their Harley's.

@gemini232003 Check your history. You're only partly right. Yes, AMF had bad management but they also had a lot of money that they pumped into R&D and came up the the EVO engine which saved H-D from bankruptcy, particularly in the Sportster. If there had been no AMF involvement, you wouldn't even be watching this video because the Motor Company would only exist in the history books.

I bought my '97 FatBoy new. I loved the fact that back then they were so hard to find that I flew to LA from the Bay Area to buy one and then bring it back. It was and still is a head turner. I've tried to keep it pretty much stock other than the typical HD chrome add ons thinking back then I was customizing it. Laughing at myself for that thought now

I owned the prototype FATBOY. It was built in El Paso, Texas by Sherman Barnett at Barnett Harley Davidson Dealership. It was a 1989 Heritage Softaial and it was customized in 1988 It was seen by Willie G. Davidson at the 7th Annual Laughlin River Run when Sherman introduced me to Willie G. Davidson. I had over $20,000 dollars invested in the bike by the time it was completed. A new Heritage Softail only costed about $11,000 in 1989. It had .Center Line Wheels. They were $600 each. It had 26 coats of metallic silver paint, Avon racing tires. It had a Canadian front fender. It had 4 valve Branch Heads, Screamin Eagle electronic ignition, all of the lines were braided stainless steel. and a lot of custom chrome. I still have a few pictures but I do not know how to post them here!

For 2016 and 2017 there was also a Fat Boy S. Slightly lower from the factory, came in your choice of two kinds of black (gloss or denim). Came with the CVO/Screamin' Eagle 110" engine, hydraulic clutch, throttle by wire, cruise control (thanks to the throttle by wire), and ABS standard.
It wasn't quite as awesome as the Low Rider S that had all of that plus upgraded brakes, but they're pretty awesome. There was a Softail Slim S as well.

And although, I'll always have a special place in my heart for the Shovelheads. The first 91 Fatboy I bought (used) Was like a dream! Now on my second Fatboy I just bought (used cause I still cant afford new) LOL A 2006 CVO. I'm enjoying it very much! The Fatboy and the Heritage -Deluxe Are my favorites! But, If I was taller than 5' nothing? I think the Breakouts are the nicest looking Harley's today!

I love the seat high around 24 in high it does give it low slung feel to it...

Outstanding video. When I purchase expensive cars or motorcycles, I read about the history. I am not like someone down the street that bought a BMW and thought it was from Japan. Obviously she is not an enthusiast but buying for the look at me, The Joneses. I have never owned a Harley as I love Sexy European bikes but with this unique history, that would make me consider that bike. I own a 2015 Ducati Monster 1200 and a 2018 Super Duke 1290r. Just before I bought the SD, Harley did catch my eye with there new Fat Bob, FXDR, and Fatboy but at 700 pounds, all too heavy. I do not mind the cruiser less horsepower thing but getting too old to push around that much weight in the garage. Keep the great history videos coming. Harley making great looking bikes. Waiting for there new modular engines as I am sure the Euro 5 regulations in 2020 will make it increasingly difficult for air cooled motors.

God Bless America
