    You made a very good point Freddie - owning a dream bike is not just riding it - it's also the feeling of happiness when you just think about it parked up in the garage. Might sound strange for other people but that's how it is for us. Great upload 😀

      I remember when I bought my 1980 Jeep Cherokee Chief (in 1992). All through work, I would think about it parked in the lot. A couple of times a night (I worked overnights at a hospital), I’d go down for a smoke break & I’d just look at it for 5 or 10 minutes, so I know that feeling quite well.

    I just rode my 2023 Obese Robert about 350 miles in two days and it was phenomenal. For long trips I throw on a 19” windshield, some Thrashin supply saddle bags, and a waterproof duffel. About to put on some 3” risers to add some comfort. The bike is light and keeps up with Street and Road Glides all day long. After a long trip I strip it back down to its street brawler looks for the daily commute and local rides.

      Last July found a bottle of Powers Irish whiskey for my cousin's 89 year old Irish neighbor. I was in the East Bay Area, my cousin was in the suburbs of Vancouver, BC. Ergonomically the only changes was 3 inches of rise in the bars, motobars, Memphis shades fairing with their lowest screen (the others cause my head to bob around too much) and a Mustang seat. Left at 12:30 on the Friday got there 6:30pm (920 miles) the Saturday. It was an AWESOME ride. I am so happy with my Fatbob. I have other bikes but it's the one I always seem to swing a leg over. Can't recommend it highly enough (or I-5 in the Northern end of California with its lovely sweepers). Great fun. I so want to do it again

    With basically no motorcycle riding experience (except for owning a Yamaha Xmax Scooter) I rented this beast last year in California and did 2.600 miles in two weeks. Took me through the hurricane when it lightly hit Yellowstone, to Vegas the Grand Canyon and many more incredibly beautiful places. Had the best time and we grew into one during that trip. The power of the engine was such a visceral experience. Yes, sometimes a windshield would have been nice and if my buddy didn't have panniers on his Harley, it would have been a real problem. After that trip I had to get a real motorcycle but the Fat Bob wasn't ment for my commute trough city traffic. I finally landed on a Moto Guzzi V7 850 Special - of all the bikes I tested, the sound and rumble reminded me of the Fat Bob most. Very happy with my purchase so far. Ride on!

    American here, have a '17 Dyna Fat Bob, and to be honest it (and the Softail version) seem to be far more popular in Europe then they have been in the US since it's inception; it's a bike that doesn't seem to have a place in HD's line up, especially with the Low Rider S taking the performance mantle... I'm surprised it has taken them this long to cancel it.... having said that, living 5 miles up a dead end dirt road, coming from a dual sport/adv bike background here in Vermont, I love mine. Then again, I'm not a "Harley" guy. Thanks for the video.

      Low Rider S is only "better" peformance wise by having a skinnier front tire. Both have the same exact same frame, engine, USD forks, brakes and such. The Fat Bob has adjustable rear suspension that the Low Rider S does not have.

    Great video Freddie. I took one out for a test ride and kinda liked it, but I'd just stepped off my Multistrada on the journey to the garage - and losing pretty much all of the luxuries of the multi was too much of a juxtaposition. I've since bought a Sportster Forty Eight and get the same feeling you do about Obese Robert. The engine, the torque, the sound, the way it makes you feel. No other motorcycle brand does it as well as Harley.

  • @sergentcolon1
    @sergentcolon1 Před měsícem +3

    Personally, I think Harley’s days are numbered. They’re mostly bought by affluent older bikers over 60 who started riding in the 70’s and 80’s. The numbers of these is diminishing and fewer younger people are into biking and if they are they are less affluent. I personally think Harley made a huge mistake in dropping the Street 750 from their line up as a reasonably priced entry into Harley bikes. Harley dealerships are closing due to lack of sales already while the likes of Triumph, BMW, KTM a lot of Chinese manufacturers are making smaller capacity, much much cheaper bikes, the master being Royal Enfield who make good quality machines at fantastic value for money.

    The main problem with harley is that they are pricing themselves out of the market of what most riders can/are willing to spend. Theyre becoming a brand like Porsche or jaguar. Which is a shame because Harley's are great iconic motorcycles but they became too expensive. Especially with the sportster line up that got removed. And dont get me started on the new sportsters, theyre hideous and expensive and resemble nothing of a real harley.

Yes, I've owned many other bikes from Triumph, Royal Enfield and the Japanese big 3 but they can never put the smile on my face as my Harley's. As a matter of fact, I still have all 4 of my Harley's dated all the way back to the EVO's and recently with the M8 motor and the newest platform the Sportster S and Nightster which are a blast just by themselves. But if you like the traditional potato sound then the M8 is the way to go... my EVO just turned 144K and it still runs like a top.

While the "bobbed" rear fender may look good it's trash for group riding as many harley riders do. It spits gravel straight back into the rider behind rather than down. Personally not a fan of the fat front tire, just added rotational mass.

    You make a good point Freddie about how what I call forced modern looks age badly and can even fail when new in my opinion. Take the humble MG Metro from the early 80's. It sold very well with its traditional badging, honouring the integrity of the MG brand. The simple octagon badge on the grill and sides worked. During the late 80's they decided to 'pop art' the badging, with half octagon MG badges printed seemingly at random across the sides of the car. The integrity of the brand was lost and the MG brand was dropped from the Metro range. Royal Enfield have done the same thing with the Hunter 350, using 'pop art' with their Royal Enfield name on the bike's tank. A bad move in my opinion but at least it is only with the one model but it is 'talking down' to your buyer. Will these companies ever learn...

    I enjoyed your description of the emotional appeal of a bike such as the Fat Bob. I sold my 2021 Heritage Softail (With the 107 inch Milwaukee Eight motor) which I'd owned for a couple of years because I'd simply done what I wanted to with it. Every ride is an occasion on a bike such as that but I figured that I could get the same visceral appeal and sensation from other, less expensive machines. Plus I don't like the fact that H-D seems to be spiralling downwards into becoming a boutique brand with a severely limited appeal.

    A great description of the Harley Fat Bob. That engine must be quite high compression, as the starter seems to take quite a bit of strain before the engine comes to life. I would guess the choice of bike obviously comes down to what the end user expects and what they are going to use it for.

    I test rode one of these a week or so ago. My only complaint, which is easily remedied, is the super quiet exhaust. I loved everything about it.
    Then I got back on my paid off, well modified 2021 Sportster Forty-Eight… Full Stage One, Legend Revo rear shocks, weighing in at about 550 pounds.
    I really wanted to want the Fat Bob 114 enough to trade my Forty-Eight for it, but I just couldn’t do it…
    All that said, Harley screwed up badly discontinuing this bike in the US. IMO, it’s an awesome bike!

  • @dhc8guru
    @dhc8guru Před měsícem +1

    I’ll throw in my 2 cents on Harley’s current lineup.
    The bigger touring bikes attracted the riders who put 50k in 4-5 years in their bikes and then traded in for another. Now, those guys just aren’t doing those miles anymore and are hanging on to the bikes and not buying new. That was their bread and butter sales. Fat bob, Dyna’s and Sportsters just aren’t attracting the younger riders. Likely due to price, competition and changing tastes. Don’t get me wrong, they are all great bikes. I considered another Harley before buying my Speedmaster. Harley just didn’t provide enough value for the money and several dealers just turned me off with their sales tactics.

    I’d take the Rocket III all day over any of the other Harleys you talked about in your video.
    I test rode a Rocket and didn’t experience any of the complications you complained about with the Rocket III. The brick wall you’re going to hit with a Harley: No top end. No such limitations with the Rocket.
    With the Rocket you have a choice between cruising or burning up the road in milliseconds. With a Fat Bob you only have one choice. Cruise with a couple seconds worth of top end before you hit a brick wall. Beyond that everything with Harley permeates around branding.

  • @jimzenglish1
    @jimzenglish1 Před 21 dnem

    I ridden a few late model Fat Bobs and they are the best handling motorcycle in the HD range. Great lean angle and the 114ci is smooth with tons of torque. Two negatives are the all-terrain tyres are horrible and they should have gone for twin Led headlights like the Rocket which would have been similar to previous models.

    I'm a Brit based in the US and I love my Obese Robert, but I think you're making some reasonable observations. It's hard for a major subset of Harley owners (apparently not me) to potentially relate to this bike (and that's perfectly valid for them to feel that way - we all value different stuff). That said, I have made changes like PM wheels which changed the look of the beast. Interestingly the Sport Glide was eliminated from the Harley US range from 2022 onwards too (so the Fat Bob outlived it) despite (like the FatBob) being available in foreign markets even to the present (for anyone in the far future, or time travelers with broken watches, this comment is being made in 2024).
    Looking at the guys that worked at the dealership where I bought it, that really got into the Fat Bob (HD Oakland (great store by the way!)), I got the sense that many of them were coming off of Japanese sports bikes, loved the M8 114 engine's character and torque (I really love the engine), and this was the layout that made sense for them. The FatBob felt a little more planted to me in corners than the Low Rider S, but given my change of wheels (albeit with potentially better rubber) that clearly wasn't a big differentiator, but I appreciated the better ergos out of the box (the slightly lower seat and mid pegs on the low rider would definitely be uncomfortable after an hour) and the back end looked far more tidy (once you got rid of the side mounted license plate or in the UK that thing that sticks out past the rear wheel).
    Your points are likely on point. We'll see if it survives. Like the show "Firefly" - it died in one season because many people couldn’t figure out a mix of genres (in this case Sci Fi and Westerns), in this case Harley Air Cooled V-Twin + Unconventional Styling + Push on the Sports Bike Crowd. This will also likely impact the resale, which will suck for many folks. For me? It's just too fun, I like the looks (with the different wheels (the California DMV let me have the license plate "BIG GROM" but with changing the wheels it made no sense)) and by the time I sell it, petrol/gasoline will have been banned anyway lol
    All bikes are fun and have their own charms. I look forward to seeing more FatBobs on the road, but if you’re riding anything from a Honda Express to a Triumph Rocket III, as long as it’s putting a smile on your face, it’s doing exactly what it was supposed to do! - Great video. Thank you.

    • @jtjt210
      @jtjt210 Před 3 hodinami

      I'm so embarrassed but I'm going to do a "and another thing" comment, lol. The first FatBob was great because it opened up a whole new direction for Harley. It's a really good bike and many reviewers felt it was the best riding of many of the Dynas (other than perhaps the low rider S). I think a key difference here is that this design feels like a clear product decision and investment rather than a "what can we do with the Dyna" (or for this generation - Softail). I'm wondering if we'll see a situation where like the Honda NT650 Hawk (another favorite of mine, and cult bike in the US) it was a little unloved/misunderstood at the time and eventually held or rose in value once people "got it". The early V-Rods always looked a little odd. The last V-Rod Muscle to my eye looked great but the ergonomics were horrible unless you were a famous French bell-ringer (of the hunchback variety).
      The fatty wheels and (if you've seen one of these with conventional wheels) to a lesser extent the headlight may be a challenge for resale unless you think they look cool, but it has such charm when you're riding it, that like the NT650, we may end up with a cult following that keeps the prices up. Time...will...tell... (and I'm not betting one way or the other!)

  • @TheChromeRonin
    @TheChromeRonin Před měsícem

    Yeah, the price. Eye wateringly expensive here in NZ, but as you say, the resale hasn’t kept as high as others. But then like the vrod, nightrod, fatbob actually make more sense to buy second hand.
    But really, as you also say, the sportglide is just more practical. So if I only had one bike, it would be the sportglide. If I won the lottery, I’d have the fatbob too 8) right alongside my Indian scout 101 in the imaginary garage.

    I'll tellya why: There's no passenger pillion to speak of, the headlight looks like Bender's eye. it weighs almost 700lbs, and only has 93 hp for a bike with a 1900cc displacement. The front tyre is yooge! I've heard it described as "the bike with two back tyres". At $17,000us it's not really priced to sell, especially with so much competition out there. It's definitely a niche bike for one-up riding.

    Great series on the Fat Bob, I agree it won't age well, nor will the Sportster S. I took the Fat Bob for a test ride, loved it, but I needed to give it a more retro feel, so I specified short shot exhausts and a number plate relocation. The price was very tempting and the part exchange offer on my air cooled Sportster was good, but my wife said it will never be a classic Harley in the way that a Sportster is. Hello Freddie,
    I like your well-staged videos with the beautiful landscapes of the English countryside and your arguments always well explained, especially like in this one where you talk about the Fat Bob, you found the exact terms to define the sensations that this machine can get, I ride a 114 Low Rider S and I experience exactly the same things. I thought for a while about taking this model which I like for its atypical look, but ultimately I chose the Low Rider S which I really like and which equipped with a fairing and saddlebags corresponds better to my use , maybe I'll take an ST soon for its even more touring-oriented equipment, but this engine and chassis are definitely excellent.
    I think Harley USA discontinued this model and the Sport Glide as well because they do not meet the standards that Americans prefer.
    Greetings from France.
