So true
Lots of people see Dark Souls as a game of rage and despair. The best part is that it is, and it is also a game of quiet calm and beauty. Every boss a monumental challenge, and every bonfire afterwards a relaxing place of peace.
My Good Self but the best part of all, the unique stories of all the npcs and how they soon come face to face with their fate in the end
Both of your comments beautifully said

I play soulsbourne games to relax at this point 😂 but I've played them all at this point so yea
Plus the beauty of the world and lore, like even the smallest NPC’s lore/gameplay wise, have backstory and so much content to them! What I would give to experience Dark Souls 1 for the first time again!
I can't even speak of how beautiful this game is to me.
It really just hits differently once you've gone through it, huh?

I'll always see this theme as the quintessential medieval RPG theme. For people who went into this game being completely oblivious, I imagine it felt like a bait and switch, lulling you into a false sense of security that you'll be having a fun and relatively carefree adventure, only to later realise it was actually the calm before the seemingly never ending storm.

Since a lot of people are writing a lot of comments talking about the rage they felt playing this game, I want to say my thoughts.
This game represents not giving up. It represents the will to fight. Sometimes against an unending tide of darkness that seems to consume everything. You are a lone warrior with a goal that is too grand for you to even comprehend. The forces that you fight are so above you that they do not even care about you. Everything you do, every fight you get into, every time you "win", it is meaningless. The darkness is coming. You are a flawed character, fighting for those who don't want to be saved and have given up hope. It is the will against certain darkness to fight, because there is something beautiful about life that is worth fighting for. Surely, we are all going to die, most without reason nor worth remembering. Yet there is a deep respect of beauty that is hidden in the deepest parts of the soul. It is not put into words, as speaking of it makes it vanish it into the wind. It is a thought not meant to be said, but to be felt. It is quiet and fragile, yet as long as one person is fighting for it, it still has a chance. It is always worth the sacrifice.
You completely misunderstand the lore. We are being manipulated by the Gods of Anor Londo who despise humans, to link the first flame and further extending the age of fire that should have ended long ago. To actually save humankind, you must bring about the age of men, the age of dark. Afterwards, the cycles can continue just as normal.
And mind you, there is nothing bad about the age of dark at all. It's only the Gods who would have you believe that, as they are afraid of the inevitability of losing their power. The age of Fire was the time for the Gods to prosper, but in the age of dark, it is humankind who will grow powerful.
@@kaspersaldell but these gods and deities, they don’t actually give two damp shits about you, that’s what he’s trying to say. That damn serpent lied to you from the start.
And his main point is what this game represents, ultimately- not giving up. Which is completely true. You kinda seem to have misunderstood the main point of his comment, but alas. To each their own
Beautiful way to describe it.

Always have a spare controller at home
This song has grown to be a catalyst for all the memories I have of the time I spent playing dark souls to come rushing back. not just playing it, but my life all during that time.
In some sense, dark souls has come to be a metaphor for my struggles throughout my life.
it feels absurd to actually say, but I feel like I see life differently after playing dark souls. it taught me to strive again, and again, and AGAIN. It taught me tenacity. Because it doesn't matter how many times you fail, if you can succeed in the end.
and what do we learn through the lore? your struggle has meant nothing. your grand mission as the "chosen undead" has been to preserve a little longer the wisps of life still lingering in a dead world. You've been manipulated from the beginning by forces greater than yourself.
and yet. does this make the personal journey any less meaningful? in a world where nothing we do can have any real lasting impact, does that mean we should choose to do nothing?
You already know the answer to this question.
Beautifully stated! You put my feelings about this game and my life into words that I've been failing to articulate to myself since the game came out :)

When I first played through Dark Souls, (played through the game 4 or 5 times with different builds before touching another game), I was going through a difficult time in my life. At night I would sometimes lay in bed and pull up the loading screen on the main menu and just let it loop endlessly while I drifted to sleep. That was years ago but this track always takes me back to that place in life and I am glad to have had good music like this to keep me calm during difficult times. Blessings for the upload!
It's so pleasing to hear that some of my favorite songs have helped people through some difficult times in their lives. Thank you for sharing, and the blessings (may you also be blessed)!
I know I’m replying to a year old message but your story made me think of where I was at when I first played this game. I first started playing dark souls in February of 2012. I was in the marine Corp on paternity leave. My wife had just had my first daughter. My wife had a difficult c-section so I had to take care of my daughter on my own for the first week or so. My daughter would sleep during the day and stay up all night. I would let this game run in the menu screen while I would try and put her to sleep. Once I would get her to fall asleep I would continue playing. She would sleep in hour increments so I would just stay up and wait for her to wake up. This game in a weird way will always remind me of my daughter especially this music, which is ironic because dark souls seems like hopelessness and despair. But this music makes me feel happy and hopeful.
Praise the Sun!

This song makes me remember just how much of the fantastical atmosphere that Dark Souls 1 had every single other game in the series missed the mark on. Even now there's something that screams "magic" from that game that the others simply don't have. Maybe it's the bright color palette, or the lighting effects that were chosen, but there is something so bright about Dark Souls that always gave me a sense of artistry the others didn't give me. The music and world of DS1 is much more "fantasy" than any of the other games ever were to me.
Imo Bloodborne nailed the atmosphere, music and tone it was going for - Lovecraftian horror in Victorian London.
Dark Souls 2 had the best atmosphere imho
I think they all played their roles how they were supposed to, though I can't deny there is a special magic about Ds1. Specifically for Ds3, the world feels grey, lacking, dying, and miserable, but frankly it is; the world you are left in in Ds3 is on the verge of collapse and people are almost entirely hollow. It may feel dull, but it works for its own reasons.

Dark Souls is my favorite game ever. I can't even explain why, and I wouldn't say it is objectively the best game I've ever played; there's just something mythical about the entire experience, the countless deaths, the jolly cooperation, and the obtuse lore which have cemented it in my mind. Be safe, friends. Don't you dare go hollow.

Rest in peace kentaro miura
I really have never played anything like Dark Souls. I absolutely love the atmosphere of the game. Mysterious, somber, dark, yet beautiful. Lordran is in ruins, a shell of it's former glory, yet it's still gorgeous.
I get the image of exploring a bright green forest and stumbling upon the remains of an old stone House from this song. It's overgrown and falling apart, but you still can find signs of previous occupants. Abandoned ruined furniture, utensils, possessions. It makes you wonder what happened, who they were, why did they leave thier home, and how you'll never learn the answer.
It's haunting. At least to me.
This game save me from my family issues, money issues, school issues and loneliness. Thank you miyazaki for this masterpiece.
This theme for me is what getting embraced by your mother feels like. It's warm, comforting and safe
I love the way the black knight offers the sword to the player. It's as if to say, you can attempt this journey however, it will be perilous but rewarding.
Dark Souls is such a depressing game when you think about it. I’ve never had a game make me think “my god, what have I done?” After shooting the Gywnevere illusion or having to kill Solair after he was possessed by the Sun Maggot. Truly a master piece of a game and one that everyone should finish in their lifetime.

The best feeling was hearing this for the first time, and taking extra long to make your character
This game carried me through some pretty rough parts in my life. It is such a beautiful orchestra of frustration and happiness. There's nothing else like it.
That track can be emotionally brutal. It's why Dark Souls is so amazing. You don't even realize the connections you are making and the the lore you are grasping. Continuous subtle injections that culminate in to unbelievably memorable moments or understandings.
These comments are like tiny flames in the distance, lightening the load of ever-encroaching darkness
If all flames fade, comrades, then let us burn. Let us burn today, brightly, valliantly, fearlessly. Let us go into ashes without fear, and more importantly, with no regrets. You all have fiery chaos in your innards, and the deepest dark too. You have a heart of gold... do not let them take that from you.
This song is beautiful, and beyond that, it reminds me of the last time my former friend group genuinely had fun together before the falling out. The entire time we were friends there had been red flags that were overlooked, and I’m glad that the friendship is over now because it was genuinely a bad relationship, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t have fun together too, we had the most fun I had ever had together which is why it took me so long to really recognize the issues. Our Dark Souls playthrough was the last time I can remember when we were hanging out without any tension, just 3 guys playing a fun game together.
Wish I could experience anything like that. I've never had many irl friends into gaming, & the ones that were just liked the typical popular multiplayer games like Halo or Cod.

This single track right here is so good, it sounds weird but it made me fall in love with the game before I even played it. Now everytime I listen to it, all the good memories come flooding back in. I'll never forget my time playing this game. The hardships, the wonder, the excitement, the first time I saw anor Londo and ash lake, Solaire and seigmeyers quests, PvP in the forest, it was all wonderful.
DARK SOULS 1 REMASTER!!!
What I would give to play this game again for the first time. That feeling can't be mimicked.
Whenever I hear this, I think of that time, First souls game, first time playing a 3rd person ARPG, on a PC , with keyboard and mouse .. browsing through the classes for 10 minutes and finally deciding on knight, the tune has me recall this so vividly but honestly everything else about my first many playthroughs is just a haze.
This track is just legendary and way too iconic, I think I will never forget
One of the most incredible things about Dark Souls is how it makes you grow in love with it slowly. As you discover more of the history of the world and characters, you can't help but to care for them. The most amazing thing about this is that you even fall in love with your enemies. You understand that they are tortured souls that have a purpose just like you. Your circumstances pit you against each other and no solution other than a fight to the death can resolve it. You thank them for the lesson and strength gained from them. I don't know how many times I've started up the game and never made it to game play bc this song was too good to stop listening to
even though characters in the game keep telling you to give up and forget about it, you didn't give up and thats what matters
when I first heard this piece while creating my character, I knew this game would be something special. this is one of the greatest menu/intro themes in video game history, on par with final fantasy's prelude and zelda's fairy fountain theme. what a treat.
I started this journey with Dark souls in 2012 and I keep coming back to this song. After thousands of hours in Dark Souls 1 I wish I could explain in words how this song makes me feel. I can't and I never could. It transcends text or language.
This game and the series means so much to me I can’t even explain
This reminds me so much of the tune that plays on the menus of Zelda games - usually when selecting a save-slot. Just love it.
Oh how beloved it is to get immersed in something you enjoy!
This theme really speaks to how lonely the game feels. Your interactions with other people are welcome but fleeting, and there's always that empty lull after an epic boss theme has faded away, not to mention those quiet spots where you can look out over the endless horizon to mountains and clouds that stretch on forever.
Dark Souls 1 and 2 both managed to capture that melancholy so tangibly.
everytime I hear this song I just get gutpunched with emotion
Always listen to this masterpiece while reading Berserk giving me ghoosbombs every time
Sometimes I’ll just open up the menu and let this song play on repeat for a couple hours while I read or do chores around the house. It’s amazing.
Makes me think of the serenity of nature, and how it persists for millenia regardless of the bloody wars of men. Crystal caves, gloomy woodlands, moonlit lakes.
It's tracks like this, from Dark Souls, that rekindle the flame in my soul and keep me from going hollow.
10 years ago, this masterpiece was released~
The concept of fire is so genius. The song resemble the nature of fire. It describes the flame perfectly. The flame, flickering through time, while fading, while growing, but always needs resources. A flame once lighten is destined to be faded. Whatever it may do, it sure have been given the opportunity.
Those little chimes that can be heard throughout the song are so beautiful. Really ties this track as something so nostalgic and beautiful
Happy 10 year anniversary Dark Souls
It’s weird to think that I only found the souls series because I got bloodborne for free. If I hadn’t seen the free sign next to it I would have never discovered this series I love so much.

Even though the game is the same, somehow it feels like it gets deeper and deeper. After each playthrough I look at Dark Souls just a little differently. I remember when I first tried this game. I thought it was just some really hard half-assed rpg that people only beat as a challenge. How wrong I was. This next statement will be somewhat contradictory, but this game with all of its flaws is still a Masterpiece. Newbies probably won't understand what I mean by this comment, but once you play to NG7 you might be enlightened. Just understand that myself and probably others don't love this game because it is difficult. This game is so much more. Okay, I have been up way too long. Didn't mean to get so deep...
I think you're totally right. My first playthrough, the game was pretty fun but mostly just felt like a challenge to get past. It wasn't until my second character that I really started appreciating every intricacy of the game, especially all the different ways to play the game.
Fuck demon ruins and izalith though, hate that place mechanically and aesthetically.

I can't put into words how much the soulsborne series means to me. Thank you, Fromsoftware
