It is insane how I never noticed that Clarence had a stepdad and Jeff had two mothers because of how well they were portrayed... You know, as normal folk. That's something a lot of media, not even cartoons specifically, can learn from
shut up
That's how representation should be but most horribly fail
That's because irl a lot of lgbtq people act out and are weird to be different
@@danielthecake8617
The LGB community has been more conservative about how they're represented because they know that the people who are representing them in the worst mascot-tier way possible are virtue signalling sellouts just trying make money on the identity of ordinary people
However, if you're referring to the other community (TQIA+), then you hit the nail right on the head

Can we talk about how good of a father figure his Mom’s Boyfriend was? He played with him, taught him lessons, and went through a massive storm just to find him. Man is a homie.
I love Chad so much! Such a fun character
Not very responsible but he obviously cared for them
His name is Chad aswell
He seems like a fun character, but having a parental figure with the same overall maturity as a child is going to be a problem when that child outgrows the parental figure.
I never even knew he was his stepdad. They made it all so normal and fun
Clarence definitely portrayed certain aspects of childhood that I related to deeply. And I do admire how it doesn’t shy away from the gross aspects as well. It wasn’t too stylized and polished - and I love it for how grounded it was in reality.
Sumo's dad is severely underrated, he deserves the appreciation for handling a whole family

Dumb.
@@tigerlily7889 Kids are both.

It’s like Phineas and Ferb, but realistic.
The most realistic part of this show is that the boys only find out each other's full names only 15 episodes later (At least a month in the show's timeline) by complete accident.
I am 41 and I absolutely adored Clarence. Such a sweet and hilarious cartoon. Reminds me of my first school I ever attended. Everyone was friends. I had a sleepover in the 4th grade with 17 girls! When I changed schools I barely had any friends. It was nice to watch Clarence and reminisce.💚💚💚

Sumo just casually bolting into a party uninvited and having unspoken rizz is the most classic Sumo moment ever

they literally filled every pothole that they introduced and kept a running story with multiple storylines. This show was amazing.
Do you mean Plot hole?

You know they just plan that stuff out before making the episodes, right? Write out the storyline for each character, decide where they overlap, and animate. It's good work but it's not mind blowing.

man this show got overshadowed by others that were dominating at the time but i loved it. As someone that grew up poor with a single mother and a small amount of friends this show hit unnecessarily hard sometimes
I didn’t necessarily grow up poor but not rich but I do relate to only having a couple friends but I’m actually happy for that since I found my self becoming way closer with them

For such a charming show, Clarence had a very dark overarching subplot that I don’t see many people taking about. The subplot in question is one involving Josh (the curly-haired, hook-armed, bad-tempered teen boy).
After he loses his job in “Lost in the Supermarket” all thanks to Sumo and Clarence, the next time we see him, he has a new job as a park ranger in “Nature Clarence”, then next time he has a new job somewhere else and so on. Each time Sumo and Clarence encounter Josh, he loses a body part after a series of antics (losing a chunk of his hair, his ear getting chewed off by a goat, losing his right eye) and each time we see him, he has gained weight. He gains so much weight and grows his hair out, even getting a mustache, that he becomes completely unrecognizable when compared to the first time we ever saw him back in season 1. My theory here is that Josh is slowly losing a battle with depression, and no one realises it.
In that one episode about that dog Chimney, I seem to recall him being high off shrooms or something, and I think that was his way of fighting that depression, idk.
This is where it gets weird: There’s another episode where Clarence and the gang wind up at a teen house party, and at some point during this episode, I remember them running through the woods or something like that. In the background, we can see Josh and a group of other unidentified young people in a circle, sporting these long robes/cloaks. They seemed to be in the middle of performing some sort of occult ritual or something. My theory is that Josh got so depressed that a cult preyed on his vulnerability and indoctrinated him into their fold. Either that or HE started that cult, relying on supernatural means to deliver him from his aguish. Or maybe he grew resentful towards the world because it was never kind to him, and this cult is a form of retaliation or something, a way to reclaim his power.
The scene is so fast, barely a frame, that if you blink you’ll miss it, but I think the stark juxtaposition of the popular kids at the house party and the ‘loser’ weirdos in a cult in the woods at night was the writers’ way of solidifying Josh’s downfall for us. Or maybe, because this is a slice of life show and everyone constantly has their own thing going on, that’s just what Josh has going on in his life. He started a cult and there’s no further explanation needed lol.
I’ve looked high and low and even combed through the wiki but I can’t find any references by anyone to that half-scene or this entire subplot. Which has led me to believe that maybe I’m reading too much into it haha.
My memory is a bit iffy so i may have gotten a few things wrong here, but if ANYONE knows what I’m talking about, please reveal yourself to me because this has been driving me crazy for the past six years now. I need someone, anyone, to scratch this itch.

Clarence was like one of those shows that had an awkward vibe to it but you still loved it anyways. It was awkward bc it was realistic, as a kid I never really realized that Jeff had two moms or that Chad wasn’t Clarence’s biodad, bc they were portrayed in a realistic way. It portrayed kids just being kids and just going around messing with things and having fun, it was realistic on how kids are, stupid, imaginative, and they know how to have fun, great show really sad it ended
Could have done without the freak moms. No homo crap in kids shows! But the rest I agree with. It was a awkward show, but in a good way.

The critic back in the day judged this show pretty harsh. Every opinion on Clarence was that it was a terrible cartoon and too goofy. Everybody that watched it had some social pressure to say that it was a bad show when asked. But in the end, it doesn't even matters...We grew up and realized it was a masterpiece. Rest in piece 2010's Cartoon Network. The piece of art that defined my childhood, and many others.
I never understood the vitriol directed towards Clarence. They were never really clear about why they hated it even. I appreciated how creative but down-to-earth it was.
If I had to guess, it’s because it’s not suited to binging in the way shows like Adventure Time or Regular Show are where the episodes are completely whacky and high-concept. A critic is going to binge a show, so I guess I understand why they might not like it, but it’s their job to separate their own personal experiences from the quality of the show.

The first time that I saw the episode where Clarence played with Amy, I straight up cried when she talked about how she doesn't know which parent she's going to be living with. Some added lore is that Belson mainly lives with his mother, because his father is a rich business man. Clarence ended up going into Belson's dad's office and is mistaken to be Belson, which shows how detached his father is from his family.
Yeah it’s kinda sad to think about that
This was my favorite childhood show because it presented a reality where the “weird” kid wasn’t a social outcast. Like Clarence, I was also a “weird” kid. In the real world, most of the time, the “weird” kid is at the bottom of the ranks; which is what happened to me. I knew people, but no one ever hung out with me because of my “weird” kid status.

I am 32 years old, I was also that kid who would hang out in the back hall. Everyone at school called us "The Misfits", and despite "Social Ranks" I will say that on the other side of all of that I look back and am glad I wasn't a "Normie". That I had friends who challenged that norm and did not mind trolling the NPCs with me in a time where literally everyone was struggling to find their own identity. Just so happened we didn't really care being the scapegoats that the confused individuals would project onto, and honestly Clarence is a perfect representation of that. Still just being Clarence, and still just jamming out with his friends.
If that's the experience you were able to find also then there is absolutely no reason to be ashamed of being the weird kid. If anything I realized as I got older some the ones who gave me flak secretly wished they were able to be as weird without having strict parental guidance every step of the way. Could maybe, potentially be a reason why you see people who are completely and seemingly "Normal" go completely crazy on paper as adults out of nowhere maybe? (Because they weren't allowed to be "Weird" in the environments they grew up in?) 😅
Clarence runs a lot more deeper than people realize.

Man, Clarence is such a good show. It reflects childhood friendships, playfulness and innocence so well. All the characters are extremely relatable in different ways. Growing up I could relate to Jeff because I have pretty bad OCD, Clarence because I was hyperactive, and Sumo because I also had a big family and didn’t feel very seen by my parents. Chad is honestly my favorite character in the show. I grew up without seeing my dad much because my parents got divorced when I was very young, so I have a stepdad. Chad clearly tries his hardest to be a good father figure for Clarence and if you have a stepdad or step parent, that’s really all you could ask for. Just someone who you may not be blood related to you, but still loves you unconditionally and tries to fill a vacancy no matter what situation you’re in.
This is one of those shows you watched growing up and it's still good now that you're older but good in a different way
When you mentioned the Rough Riders Chicken episode, I started to grin because I remembered all the ytps I watched when I was younger that used that specific episode
Clarence is a great show. It was from a time where you kinda had to give something for all ages in a show and Clarence does it right. It's a silly relatable show to watch and give ideas on what to do to kids when I was little, and looking back on it now that I'm older, is a treat to nostalgia, helps bring back the child in you, and like lots of cartoons around this golden age, has some really heartfelt and sometimes down right dark and "wow" moments, such as in the erratic rock episode with Amy down right says her family is dealing with a divorce.
Or when the mayor literally dies in a helicopter crash.

I agree, it didn't get enough love. I'm surprised there even was a video about it recently, Clarence held such a place in my heart!!! I loved it because it was realistic (a bit exaggerated maybe lol) it wasn't too serious or too fictional. it was just a regular kids life with their friends

You forgot to mention a very famous theory that is more than likely 100% real. In the star episode, at 5:27 you can clearly see Jeff pushing Gilben to the floor and him landing on a very specific way. Before that episode he behaved normally but after that he barely changed from the position he fell to the floor in, which means that the fall caused by Jeff probably paralyzed Gilben from then on
It could very well be true, to support this theory Gilben fell on his back which could have shattered his spine. Your spine being one of the most fragile bones in your body it can easily get a fracture and damage the nerve around it, giving you partial or full paralysis depending on the place where it shattered.

This is my fav when I watch on a sleepover😂
For some reason, every episode I see in this video it's like a memory just washed over me and I now remember everything. I truly don't remember any of these episodes until they're brought up.
the reason it's underrated is because it's one of the first shows that transitioned from cartoons being about a show that was enjoyable with a story, to goofy stupidness with no thought put into it. It just wasn't that generations cup of tea, to put it simply
Cartoon Network didn't advertise it much after the first few episodes due to Skylar Page having a mental breakdown and not being involved with the show from then on.
When his mom's busted out with food stamps it showed me it was more or less realistic
@Tk--cp9xw realistic? Sure. Stupid nonsense? Also true. They're not mutually exclusive, it's just that the issue is this one is entirely based on like a 4 year old. No attention span. Adventure time has way more story. And now most cartoons are like this
@@got_beef8029The show connected to me in a way adventure time couldnt as i lived through the struggles in clarence life but lived it how he did and was mostly blind to it Now that reality hit me im just that quiet kid everyone dosent understand all that well and i am now seeing the flaws in my family from drugs to control and the economy effecting my mother in a hard way as we can barely buy food. I saw myself in clarence somewhat i cannot ever what the two titans of cartoon network regularshow and Adventure time and see myself in the character I Just watched them casue the story was cool. Except for regular show actually.
While I do love a good plot with fleshed out characters its nice to have shows that u can pop into any time an not really have to worry about missing out on dozens of hours of storyline. I'd say Clarence is comparable to shows like gumball because of that relative lack of complex plot prior. Where gumball soared due to a variety of its factors like its much more creative art style, clarence fell short because of the advertising problems among other things like the Skylar Page situation plus its much shorter running time. Both types of cartoons (complex plot & one off) are enjoyable in their own right
I like how this touched on some fairly wholesome episodes and then jumped into the wonderfully terrifying story of Papa Mariano
Thank you for making this i remember every episode i miss this show im gonna be 18 soon it makes me think where the time go
being real here, the clarence dollars episode solely taught me what supply and demand are, and whenever i learn somethng new regarding economy i think back to this show. it's amazing how amidst the chaos they could use a subject as "adult" as flooding a market and yet i understood it all as a kid.
Clarence showed unconventual family types. Something that isn’t shown on tv in possible light. I’m happy they hit almost all the marks with the main threes family. Gay parents, trailer park parents, and non married step dad with mom. I loved it as a kid and I appreciate it now.
Just watched all of this, absolutely beautiful 10/10

The best part is that it can show kids how to be a generally accepting and loving person to everyone. But at the same it’s funny, and doesn’t feel like they’re trying to push a narrative. 10/10 on this show.
Underrated show , this show was really relatable every time I watched the show as a little kid it felt like I was watching something that would probably happened to me, made it feel like I was in the world. As a adult now the show is still very fun and relatable
I know this show isn't that old but its been long enough since I watched it that seeing each scene hit me with a huge wave a nostalgia. This might be the only 2010s show I actually watched the entirety of.
You really missed out at the time then, a lot of power houses in Cartoon Network 2010’s lineup
23:04 Those guys definitely are getting baked later while thinking of that
It was one of the last cartoons I watched back when I had cable as a kid. Its a fun down to earth show
I only really watched the first season of Clarence, but I’ll say that as a college student, me and my friends are having a blast watching it now. It’s ridiculous, silly, but always so endearing. It’s messages are so real and it’s events feel nostalgic for how they closely line up with my childhood. Really a diamond buried in the dirt
Clarence always hit different when I watched it forever ago. It felt so real compared to other cartoons. Each kid is the type of kid you knew growing up
Can we acknowledge how banger the show's intro is?
FOR REAL
Love the Killdozer at the end
