Psychic Scream is a big one too. The increase in rank only increase number of players feared, hence it is strictly better to use rank 1 if only fighting one guy.

shadow priests could also use rank 1 SW: Pain for stacking Shadow Weaving before starting proper rotation
This is a commonly used strat for Shadow Priest DPS in raids. Since their main function is to buff warlock dps, getting 5 stacks of shadow weaving up as soon as possible is more important than using an optimal dps rotation from the start. Getting shadow weaving maxed in 5 globals is huge, and since rank 1 SW:Pain really won't generate any agro, you can do it while your tank is building initial threat.

@@SparksofHell i think hes using BenikUI it has the option to separate the Character portrait from the unit frame but im currently playing on a private server so im pretty sure i wont be able to use it until classic comes out because it said it runs on 8.2 patch
LordHisoka it’s been 4-5 yrs since I played and used ElvUi, and I don’t recall all the features. You could move and customize just about anything. If it is a different one, they look very similar. On that note, I do recall using one way back in TBC days called Magi I think that looked similar as well.
I am looking forward to classic. I just recently found out about it and subbed back for a month, absolutely hated it and left again until classic actually launches. I was told about lights hope and have been playing on that for the last week and will probably do so until they shut down.
This tactic is especially important in early dungeon running as a healer. Current level ranks in your teens and 20s cause you to go oom almost immediately. Right now at level 26 I keep 2 ranks of lesser heal, 2 ranks of flash heal, and 2 ranks of heal, 2 ranks of renew on my hot bars. Anyway good video man.

Doesn't the +healing multiplier change for spells learned after lvl20? I think you want to downrank to the first post-20 rank to maximize the healing coefficient. Love the videos man keep it going.
You forgot to talk about mage's clearcasting. You can use lower level spells that are more efficient to cause a clearcast. When you clearcast, you cast max ranks (for free). Super effective method for improving damage/mana when kiting, aoe etc.

Ya I used to use rank 1 Frost bolts for pulls off tank to kite mobs in raids. Just do the rank 1 Frost bolt then spam regular bolts and I'd solo the mob while the raid killed whatever else
I think I was aware of this as a druid back in the day. Healing touch cost a lot of mana so I'm pretty sure I kept different levels of it and the big resplenish or whatever--not the basic rejuv HoT.
Punkrat, what are your favorite Classic minor specs? As in (Prot pally, Boomkin, Tanking Enhancement Shaman, etc.)

For down ranking on my spriest in vanilla i kept r1 sw pain to get 5 stacks of shadow vulnerability. Id do 4x swp and high rank sw pain plus damage. Rank 1 was good when getting close to oom duelin a rogue and keeping a dot on em.
I only needed rank 1 and max rank of Flash of light in BWL gear, just have pots ready to use, get dark runes and pop them on your bubble in need be
For Disc/Holy Priests, *_Rank 4 Heal_* is pretty much the sweet spot between HPS & mana efficiency.
Eventho it's technically max rank, it pretty much a down-ranked version of Greater Heal.
Max rank Flash Heal should be reserved as your "oh shit" button...
...or to max-out your HPS to counter high boss DPS (for example, the 3rd boss of BWL).

^^^That's a spec that will increase your mana by 10%, reduce the casting time of Heal by a half-second as well as reduce its mana cost by 15%...
...and as a bonus, it'll only reduce the mana cost of your instant cast spells by 10%... But like i said: The bread of butter is *_Heal rank 4._*
One idea I got on my mind since I was 12 years old (when I started playing WoW) - what if you give all classes the ability to train other classes abilities from their class trainers? This will be awesome if vanila got PTR server where blizz try such crazy shit. It will be so much fun to see how it work with actual vanila systems.
In all that speech the main thing that you forgot to mention about paladin flash heal is that it is THE ONLY heal in the game which +healing destribution does not affected by lvl of the spell. All other healers can't use rank 1 of their spells bacause there is almost none +healing affecting them.

Actually in full nax gear and proper mana management, you can spam rank 6 FoL and mana won't drop

Part about shaman lesser healing wave and flash heal is wrong. You can't downrank it as hard as pally with rank 1 because of the mechanics that i described above. Some mid ranks are usefull but not that radical as for paladin.
Any spell (perhaps with the exception of Flash of Light) that you gain below level 20 receives a penalty to its +healing/+damage scaling.

Downranking only comes into play when you get loads of plus healing or the spells are about mana neutral

You forgot about Tranquility as a Druid AOE heal. And that was often downranked too. Raided into Naz on classic and as a Druid I used to have 3-4 variants of each healing spell on my toolbars.
I'd add using rank1 WoP for staking shadow damage vulnerability from Shadow Weaving. Like 3 times rank 1 WoP, max Mind Blast and max WoP

Blizzard removed spell ranks because of duel spec. New players would contantly forget to upgrade their spells on their hotbar. Because they quest while in DPS spec and do dungeons while they are in healing spec. They would end up level 50 spamming their original level 1 spells. People complained it was too confusing so they removed.
Is there an addon that detects when a warlock or shadow priest cast rank 1 corruption/shadow word pain? They do this to bait dispels without wasting their mana. A shadow priest can cast swpain rank 1 over and over to build up the shadow debuff to 5 faster while conserving mana say vs a warlock who is using the felhunter to devour shaodow word pain.
Thank you for this video! I'm genuinely worried to play classic now. I didn't realize that spell rankings were such a big deal. If you see this, I'm hoping you can answer my question. I was planning on maining the second worst class spec in vanilla: balance. I've played balance from wotlk to bfa. It's my favorite spec, so I can't bring myself to play any other spec to 60 before it. Anyway, to my question... when to comes to dpsing; whether it be solo questing, dungeons, raids, etc; do you generally use your highest rank damage spells? I'm aware rhat starfire is basically all I will be casting, but when it comes to spells like moonfire and hurricane, do my ranks come into question or is it almost always a top rank cast? Any answer is appreciated. Your videos are a blessing. Can't wait for classic!
Dont worry about this. As balance you wont get in any groups anyway so it wont be a problem.
So what I didn't understand clearly is whether R1 Heal gets the same heal bonus from gear as RMax Heal?
Down ranking saved my BFD group the other day. I had ranks 1, 2, and 4 (I think) of Healing Touch bound, and naturally the mage was spamming AoE before the tank could get aggro. To his credit the tank did get a lot of the mobs on him after a while, but the mage still had a few turtles and Naga trying to eat him. So I had to heal two people at the same time at roughly the same rate, but each had vastly different HP pools.
Rank 1 was good enough for the mage, sometimes a 2. Likewise, 2 was good for the tank with the occasional 4. But soon enough, I was OOM. So what happened then was I had to wait for MP5 to kick in and allow another cast of Rank 2, which happened to coincide with saving their asses at the brink of death.
Nobody else in the group was capable of ressing, and I only had two seeds on me to cast mine with, so you can bet I was paranoid about keeping everyone alive. Thanks to down ranking, I was able to make it happen.
The more info about down ranking out there, the better.
And hey, I even learned a bit about offensive uses as well! Not an aspect that I had seen covered before. Good show!

Holy pally/Holy priest were majority the raid healer over the druid healer in Vanilla before TBC for alliance/ horde vice versa shaman/ priest druid still tank healer. Until wrath if I remember correctly. The your devotion healer was also a tank healer. But it did help with shields on deeps when low health.

Must be nice to have your new skills and abilities level with you.. I stopped playing in cata but we still had warr stances and talent trees. Panda bears was too much and i was growing bored.

Do mages typically kill mobs/lvl with the higher tier frost bolt and save the rank 1 for pvp?
rank 1 frost bolt is just for a quick slow for kiting. Useful in pve and pvp

@@jango1685 totally worth ir if you are going for a single target build, but if you are aiming for an aoe build, probably not
I already do this on my 31 warlock with Drain Soul. I use rank 1 via macro, it causes my pet to stop attack, cast rank 1 which does half the damage but only costs a third of mana. In addition I have macros preventing me of recasting while it is already being channeled so I dont waste mana, creates a souls shard, it deletes the last slot in my soul bag so it never overflows into my other bags, and triggers my talent tree when my target dies while being soul drained to gain 100% mana regen for 10 seconds.

Them removing this was huuuuuge! I logged into my 39 twinks from 12 years ago to get rdy for classic. As a holy pally I could NOT go oom. I tried! It took 8 mins straight casting to go oom. Unreal. Looking fwd to this meta! Ty pr!
I was in full t2 with some nax gear, I could spam rank 3 flash all day with rank 6 as my oh shit heal for tanks and spike dmg

Can you talk about the issue that blizz doesnt want to implement language specific servers (i.e. in Germany and France where it would have enough players for local servers for sure)? It kinda destroys the vanilla experience for many of us european players and it is an issue that needs to get blizzards attention. Maybe as a video about what you need in mmos to improve immersion. I think it was a mistake to remove it after they made the mistake of adding it in the first place, not that it was a mitake, it's just blizzard detecting some good old fun.
I can confirm that pali endless spam FOL is attainable with decent gear. No breaks, no OOM.

When I was playing on the stress test the higher rank overtook the lower rank so how can you bypass that?

Why did the Ogres reset after constantly getting hit by Holy Nova while running away? Don't the Nova hits keep them in combat?
It doesn’t cause any aggro, the only reason why the mob is attacking is because of proximity or initial aggro from the pull.
It's little things like this that make Classic superior.
Life tap of warlock is a obvious example. First, u don't want to overdrian urself, but on top of that, start from rank3 LT get more mana with +shadow damage which make rank3 LT the most efficiency life to mana ratio.
Holy Nova bonus healing on priest scales differently on beta then Pservers. Also, fun tip about holy nova, it does NOT cause dps agro, only healing agro.

oh and you bet your ass that blizzard had made mistakes. I pretty much quit after talent tree revamp & ranks disappeared out of lack of interest in the lazy, less interesting game it had become

in raids you should always use rank 6, just buy consumables and you wont go oom in any fight. in naxx gear they go oom even slower, so if you have mana pots you cant go oom.

I wish spell ranks was a thing, not just learning the spell once and passively increasing its damage when I leveling up. And learning spells at the class trainer ffs not when I cross the road and ding from exploration xp. I'm not a fan od downranking tho, even though it won't bother me since I will choose a hunter for classic.

I was expecting you to explain the formula used for healing power into the downranked spells... Too bad, this is way too basic. Still good for the new players.
whenever i watch a video like that, i fall asleep. Thats better to be kept within wikis / forum posts. I dont make my videos school-like power point projects. You can check out the melderon video which went into that. Its also kind of not even relevant, you can figure it all out through feel rather than math in game.

Using down ranking the way you are describing it is not playing optimally as too low rank spells get a level punishment to its mana efficiency. But healing like you are describing (healing players that does not really need healing) will make you top meters.
Topping the healing charts doesn’t matter if you’re overhealing
They have all the level spells just go to spell book and check the box that says show ann rank spells
Basically if you aren't downranking (especially healing if you're a druid or shaman) then you aren't playing efficiently.
Is it me or when you calculate the ratio Heal amount/Cost of Mana you always better use the upper level spell ?
that's only before the healing power coefficient is added in. Overheals are wasted mana.

You realy should have mentioned Rank 1 Heal vs Rank 1 Greater Heal in case of Priest. I'm at 500+ healing with my priest and for 130 mana I can Rank 1 heal for ~700+ and Rank 1 Greater heal for ~1400+ but for 330+ mana. so only double healing output for almost tripple manacost. Rank 1 Heal spamming is the most efficient healing after low rank Renew with talent, but that's a hot, so you need to supplement it with hardcast heals.
I think you did a good job and obviously you cant mention every downranked ability in the game..
But as a tip to mages reading this, use Rank 1 Frost Nova
It's only 25 or 50 mana compared to like 150~ at max rank. The damage difference is like 100~125 damage, but who's casting frost nova for the damage?
The snare length is the exact same, and you will ALWAYS have the mana for rank 1 frost nova.
In fact, I wouldn't even level any rank past rank 1 for this ability.

As a holy paladin, I never heard about downranking spells until TBC, and it wasn't required by then because Blizzard added +crit to more gear.
I don't understand the benefit to this when you need to wait 5 seconds after a cast before mana regen starts. When I heal on my priest I just cast greater heal when the tank drops to 50% and let my mana regen in between heals which gives me infinite casts.
6Twisted it’s not about the regen, it’s about lowering the cost of mana you use to avoid overheating.
Think about a sprint vs a marathon, in both you don’t regenerate energy particularly fast, but you will go further in a marathon than a sprint by conservation.
